Jeremy Provence Head Coach Jeremy Provence returned to his alma mater for the 2014 season to serve as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach after a record-setting career as a student-athlete. Provence was also named the head coach of Ozarks’ newest sport - men’s and women’s indoor and out-door distance track - a position he took in December of 2014.

Provence begins his second season as head coachin2015-2016afterpostingasolidfirstyear.Provence quickly injected energy into the program with enthusiasm and high expectations. With an out-standing recruiting class under his belt, the 2015-2016 season promises to be even more competitive. Sev-eral new runners ran at an elite high school level and look to provide an instant boost to both the men’s and women’s program in 2015. Provence, a native of Bidville, Ark., ran four years at Ozarks, and owns the second-fastest 8K time (25:54) in school history. He is the only runner in men’s program history to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors and one of only two runners to be a member of the US Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Provence participated in four NCAA III Regional races during his career at Ozarks. He was named to the USTF-CCCA All-Region Team and All-Conference Team in 2011 and was a member of the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team three times. Following his standout running career, Provence served as a volunteer assistant for the men’s and women’s cross country program at NCAA II Univer-sity of West Florida in 2012 and then was a graduate assistant during the 2013 season at UWF. Provence holdsaUSATrackandFieldLevelOnecertification. Provence received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ozarks in 2012. He received his master’s degree in health, leisure, and exercise science with an emphasis in exercise science from UWF in 2014. In addition to coaching, Provence is an adjunct instructor for the health science program at Ozarks.

Jackie BaconAssistant Coach Jackie Bacon was named the assistant men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor distance track coach in August of 2015. Bacon, a native of Ozark, Mis-souri, will serve as the program’s Social Media Director and lead fundraiser. Bacon comes to Ozarks

after a multiple-sport collegiate career. Bacon played basketball at Harding University for two sea-sons, helping the program to a pair of Great Ameri-can Conference regular season championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to Hard-ing, Bacon played two seasons at Avila University, leading the team to the NAIA National Tournament. She also played one season of softball at Avila. She is an active member of the Arkansas Road RunnersClubofAmericaandcompletedherfirsthalfmarathoninApril, finishingfourthinheragegroup and was the tenth female overall with a time of 1:37:32. Talented incoming Class Gives Program Boost The U of O men’s and women’s cross country teams will receive a lift from a strong recruiting class for the upcoming 2015 running season. Head Coach Jeremy Provence enters his second year with the program and is expecting his newest crop of freshmen to provide valuable talent. “Several new faces will join the program this fall and I believe each has the potential to make an immediate impact,” he said. “I can sense the excite-ment building within our program.”

On the women’s side, Provence returns four runners from last season, including sophomores Stephanie Alderson, Madison Sherrer and Erika Henderson. Nena Evans isalsobackforherfinalyear. “Stephanie, Madison and Nena were running up in the front of the pack last year,” he said. “Nenacameinreallyfitand I think she will have a good year. Madison is an athlete and a workhorse. She is running well, too. Stephanie is very consis-tent and I know what I will get out of her.” Provence’s goal for the women’s team is to

compete in the NCAA III regional at the end of the season. “I want to take the entire team to the NCAA III regional,”hesaid.“ButItoldthemtheyhavetofinishamong the top three in the conference to go. I don’t know if we are there right now, but if they continue to work hard and improve, and if they believe they can make it, then I fully expect us to be going.” With the addition of his talented newcomers, Provence is happy with the direction of the program. “We have more of a team atmosphere,” he said. “There is a good vibe. They are starting to see the direction we are headed and are excited about it.” On the men’s team, seven seniors graduated from the program last year, but returners Samuel Binns and Cade Edwards will provide valuable experience to what will be a roster full of new faces. “Cade led us last year in a couple of races,” he

said. “The mileage he has put in will pay off. I think he will have a really good season. Samuel is another experienced runner that keeps improving.” Newcomers include Stephen Babb and Dylan Holman. “There are guys up front running together and pushing each oth-er,” he said. “I don’t know if we are there as a team to go to regionals, but I would love to take individu-als. I can see some of them running well enough to go. They are working hard.” Ozarks will open the season in the Ouachita Baptist Bob Gravett Invitational Septem-ber 5 in Arkadelphia. Ozarks will then travel to Memphis, Tenn., to compete in the Rhodes College Invita-tional September 26. The Ozarks Invitational will be held October 10 in Clarksville.“IlikehavingameetthefirstweekendinSeptem-ber,” he said. “This gives the runners a little taste of competition early and builds excitement for the rest of the season. And, moving the Ozarks Invitational back a few weeks will allow for a much more com-petitive race. Several teams have expressed they will be attending and it looks to be one of the largest home meets we have hosted.”

ATHLETICS

The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven Univer-sity, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Bap-tist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisi-ana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
