Though the Eastern Michigan Uni-versitys mens cross country roster lies heavy with incoming recruits, every returning member of the Green and White knows what it is like to be a part of a championship team. In fact, they all know nothing diff erent as the Eagles are riding a four-year Mid-American Conference Championship winning streak, and are looking for a fi fth title to send two seniors out as indisputable champions. The Green and White will open the 2014 campaign on the home turf of a MAC foe, lifting the lid on the season with the Toledo Home Opener at Pearson Metropark in Oregon, Ohio.

The Toledo Home Opener will start at 5:45 p.m. with the mens race, and will serve as a triangular meet be-tween EMU, the University of Toledo, and Bowling Green State University. The Eagles will remain in-state on Fri-day, Sept. 12, when they head to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in Big Ten member Michigan States Spartan Invitational. The Green and White will then take nearly a month off in preparation before they head to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. After a two-week break, the Eagles will return to the Hoosier State to run

the course at Indiana State, the site of the 2014 NCAA Championship, for the Pre-NCAA Invitational Saturday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m.

After two months of competition on the road, the Eagles will host the fi nal meet of the regular season with the annual EMU Fall Classic. The Green and White will use the Hudson Mills Metro Park in Dexter, Mich. as its home course Friday, Oct. 24, with the fi rst race beginning at 4 p.m. From there, the team will take head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for the 2014 MAC Championship in an eff ort to win its fi fth consecutive and 19th program title in history on Nov. 1. After the conference meet, the Green and White will head to Madi-son, Wis. for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Friday, Nov. 14. Should any members of the team qualify for national competition, they will run one week later at the NCAA National Championship Saturday, Nov. 22, in Terre Haute, Ind.

Head Coach John Goodridge is entering his 14th year at the head of the EMU program, and has nine MAC Championships to his name along with nine MAC Coach of the Year titles, tying legendary EMU head coach Bob Parks for the most cham-

pionships won in conference history. A win this year would tie the EMU record for consecutive MAC Cham-pionships, as the Eagles dominated the conference from 1990-94. Coach Goodridge has planned out his 2014 schedule to prime his athletes for conference and national competi-tion, explaining, Our schedule will get progressively more challeng-ing throughout the season as we prepare for the MAC Championship and NCAA Regionals. Included in the more challenging matchups is the pair of meets in Indiana, as the Notre Dame Invitational and the Pre-NCAA Invitational are perenially competitive and heavily fielded events with some of the best harriers in the nation.

The Green and White lost three of its scorers from the MAC Championship and NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Harry Dixon, Grzegorz Kalinows-ki, and Daryl Smith, but return four runners who competed in both meets for the team. Leading the pack will be Willy Fink and Warren Witchell, who were both All-MAC Second Team performers last season and will provide us with the talent and experience to lead this team, explained Goodridge. Witchell took eighth at the conference meet and

went on to pace the Eagles in the regional meet, taking 29th overall. Fink is expected to lead not only on the course, but was also named the team captain for the 2014 campaign. The junior took 11th at the 2014 MAC Championship before taking 86th in the region. The Eagles will also have a pair of sophomores who competed well for the team at the end of the season. Nick Raymond

just missed out on a scoring posi-tion at the 2013 MAC Championship, taking 16th one spot behind Smith. The next Eagle to cross the line was John Knox, who joined Raymond as a representative of EMU at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

Goodridge is also expecting fresh-man Lahsene Bouchikhi to be an integral part of the Green and Whites core runners. Bouchikhi came to Eastern in the winter of 2013, missing out on the cross coun-try season, but became an impact member of the indoor and outdoor track and fi eld teams. The Belgian harrier is joined by a deep incom-ing class, including two transfers in Steve Hammond and Hlynur Andresson Hammond is using his fi nal year of athletic eligbility to don the Green and White after graduat-ing from Wingate University, where he was a three-time South Atlantic Conference First Team honoree and 2012 Runner of the Year. Andresson spent a year in the American high

school system, breaking school re-cords in the 1600m, 3200m, 1600m relay, and 3200m relay in his short time at Mountain Ridge High School in Maryland before going on to red-shirt the 2013-14 season at Alderson Broaddus University.

The team will also have an abun-dance of true freshmen upon which it can rely for the upcoming season. Im excited about the potential of our incoming freshmen and trans-fers, and look forward to seeing their development, exclaimed Goo-dridge about his vastly deep roster. The Eagles have relied on a mixture of experienced runners and new talent to stay at the top of the con-ference in years past, and the 2014 campaign will surely be no diff erent with the balance of nine returning team members to go along with 10 newcomers. With ample talent pres-ent to continue its tradition of excel-lence, the Eagles will once again be a team to watch in the MAC for the upcoming season.

Head CoachJohn GoodridgeLong Island, 72, Michigan 74 14th Season

The 2014 campaign marks the 14th season for John Goo-dridge as the head cross country coach at Eastern Michigan Uni-versity, and the veteran coach has certainly enjoyed an out-standing coaching career. With EMUs Mid-American Conference championships in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, Goodridge has also coached conference cross country cham-pionship teams in the MAC, Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference. Since arriving at EMU 14 seasons ago, he has coached two NCAA National Championship top-three individuals, including 2001 National Champion Boaz Cheboiywo, six cross country All-Americans, four NCAA Great Lakes Regional Individual Champions, eight Mid-American Conference Individual Champions and 46 All-MAC harriers. Goodridge was privileged enough to celebrate his birthday with a 2013 MAC Championship and the honor of MAC Coach of the Year, which putsEMUs head man in a tie with legendary head coach Bob Parks with nine distinctions. The Eagles earned their fourth straight and 18th overall title in school history with 42 points, led by seniors Grzegorz Kalinowski and Harry Dixon in third and fi fth, respectively, for All-MAC First Team honors. Willy Fink and War-ren Witchell garnered Second Team accolades. The Eagles went on to place 10th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with 295 points. The 2012 Eagles claimed the programs third straight confer-ence championship, the 17th overall in school history. Goodridge earned his eighth MAC Coach of the Year award. Terefe Ejigu and Daryl Smith claimed the top two spots at the MAC Championships with Ejigu crossing the fi nish line fi rst. Both Eagles were named First Team All-MAC while Dixon picked up Second Team All-MAC accolades. The 2011 season marked the seventh time in Goodridges storied career that he would garner the MAC Coach of the Year award. Under Goodridge, the Eagles claimed their second consecu-tive MAC title, and sixth in the past seven years. , as the Eagles were paced by All-MAC fi rst teamer Ejigu, and second teamer Smith.

In 2002, after fi nishing second at the MAC Championship, the Eagles redeemed them-selves by fi nishing third at the NCAA Champi-onship, the highest place ever in school history. In his fi rst season at the helm of the East-ern Michigan mens cross country program, Goo-drige directed the Eagles to a fi rst-place show-ing at the MAC Championship. Additionally, Cheboiywo won the individual title at the NCAA Championship, the fi rst ever by an Eastern harrier. Prior to coming to EMU, Goodridge was the head mens track and fi eld and cross country coach at Wake Forest University from 1984-99 where he led the Demon Deacons to unparalleled success in the schools cross country and track and fi eld his-tory. He spent three years, 1979-82, as the head womens cross country coach and assistant track coach at Michigan State University. He also served as the head United States national coach at the

In 2010, Goodridges talented squad made its return atop the Mid-American Conference Cross Coun-try Championship podium after the Eagles combined for the fi eld-best 66 points. Sophomore All-MAC and All-Region selection Ejigu became just the 14th runner in EMU cross country history to take home the indi-vidual MAC championship. True freshman Dixon also garnered All-MAC honors, while teammates Ejigu, Matt Hammersmith, Austin Hendrix, and Andrew Pfeiff er were named to the Academic All-MAC Squad. Despite going into the 2009 season with four straight MAC titles, the Eagles went into the year without a clear No. 1 runner. However, Goodridges solid recruiting class and veterans such as Curtis Voll-mar and Hammersmith allowed the Eagles to fi nish second overall at the MAC Championship in Athens, Ohio, where three runners earned all-league acco-lades. Goodridge also had two runners pick up All-Region honors in Vollmar and then-freshman Ejigu. In 2008, Goodridge captured his fi fth MAC title and EMUs fourth league championship in-a-row. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the fi fth time in his career and led the Eagles to a seventh place fi nish at the NCAA Regional for the second straight season. In 2007, Goodridges Eagles had another outstanding season, claiming their third straight MAC Championship title, the schools 13th over-all. Additionally, Josh Perrin won the individual MAC title in a time of 24:33. Five of Goodridges ath-letes were selected to All-MAC teams (Perrin, Josh Karanja, David Brent, Vollmar and Kyle Mena), while three were selected Academic All-MAC (Brent, Karanja and Wade Wines). Karanja earned a spot at the NCAA Championship meet after fi nishing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Champi-onship, the best performance by any MAC runner. The 2006 season was a banner year for Goo-dridge and his harriers. They repeated as MAC Cham-pions and had the lowest point total ever by an Eagle team at the MAC meet. Six Eagles claimed All-MAC honors while senior Corey Nowitzke was the top fi nisher at both the MAC Championship and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. He fi nished 30th over-all at the NCAA National Championships and was named an All-American and Academic All- American. In 2005, EMU captured its 11th MAC Champi-onship title. Nowitzke and Neal Naughton fi nished second and fi fth, respectively. The Eagles went on to place fi fth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Champi-onship to qualify for the NCAA Championship, where they fi nished 24th, with Nowitzke as the top runner.

2012 marked the eighth time in 12 years at EMU the John Goodridge has been named

1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, and in 1986 as the head United States coach at the World University Cross Country Championship in Graz, Austria. At Wake Forest, Goodridge coached the second-most Atlantic Coast Conference cham-pionships of all sports in their history, and he coached the fi rst ACC cross country team cham-pionship in school history as well as the fi rst individual cross country champion. His 1989 Wake Forest cross country squad achieved the highest fi nish in that sports school history-it was third in the NCAA Championships, an ACC record. His Wake Forest cross country team fi n-ished fi rst or second in the ACC for 10 consecu-tive years, winning four league titles, making seven NCAA appearances, and producing 35 All-ACC performers and four cross country All-Americans. In track, his team turned in the high-est fi nish ever for Wake Forest in the ACC with a runner-up spot and eighth-place NCAA fi nish. Goodridge has coached the best cross country teams in school history at Michigan State (women-fourth place NCAA National Championships), Wake Forest University (men-third place NCAAs and fi rst ever ACC Champion-ship) and now EMU (third place NCAA National Championships). He is one of a small group of active coaches who have coached more than two top-three NCAA team national fi nishes. A native of New York City, Goodridge graduated from Long Island University in 1972 and earned his masters degree from the Univer-sity of Michigan in 1975. During his many years of involvement in coaching cross country, he has been an offi cer of national organizations, includ-ing serving as the vice president of the U.S. Mens Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association and a founder of the American Distance Club.

When I got to EMU in Jan. 1967, the team was wearing dark green singlets and dark green shorts. In that season, we ran a meet at Western Michigan University, and the fi nish line was beneath the balcony which was very dark. In the hurdle fi nal, there were six men, three from Michigan State and three from EMU. MSUs uniforms were almost identical to ours. When the fi nish positions were announced, we got the short end of the stick. You could hardly see the runners under the dark balcony area, and they got the fi nish wrong. At that point, I decided to get uniforms that showed up better. Back then, Kansas was a big name in collegiate track, and they wore pink shorts and pow-der blue singlets with pink lettering. Everyone thought they were great. I decided to copy them and ordered orange shorts and green singlets with white lettering trimmed in or-ange. We wore them for about four years, but the Regents decided that all of our teams should be wearing green and white. When they made us get rid of the orange and green, I ordered green and gold, colors I had always liked. At fi rst, they werent going to let us use them, but I pointed out that our football team was wearing green and gold. Our adminis-tration could hardly argue with me, since our gridders were wearing it too. We have worn it ever since, and it is known from coast to coast, as our men have done traditionally well nationally. It also diff erentiates us from MSU and Ohio Universitys color schemes. The green and gold does show up well at the fi nish line, but nowadays they use computer cameras, so it is less of a problem as it was in the 60s and 70s.

The EMU Eagles colors are green and white, but the track and cross country teams both feature yellow on their uniforms. There is a reason these teams stand out, and the history behind it goes back to 1967. EMU great Bob Parks off ered some insight to the story behind how the yellow came about.

    Green, White... And Yellow?

Eastern Michigan Universitys mens cross country team kept up with its tradition of winning ways in the 2013 campaign. Highlighted by a fourth-straight 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship title, the Eagles landed four harriers on the All-MAC teams.

The Green and White must bid adieu to two seniors at the close of the season, each with prolifi c careers. Harry Dixon and Grzegorz Kalinowski will both continue on to compete in the 2013-14 track and fi eld season, but their years as cross country athletes have come to a halt. The pair of runners garnered All-MAC First Team honors, as Kalinowski fi nished third in the 2013 MAC Cham-pionship race while Dixon followed shortly after with a fi fth-place fi nish.

Kalinowski is an athlete that has been plagued by injury during his time at EMU and only ran a total of eight races throughout his career, but Head Coach John Goodridge has nothing but praise for the Torun, Poland native. Greg is a talented athlete who came to us as a middle distance athlete who may even have been more comfortable in the 800-meter rather than the 1500-meter, but from day one I always believed that the longer distances were where his best potential was, said Goodridge. It has taken some time for this to be embraced but at the same time Greg had stress fractures two diff erent years, which eliminated a lot of valuable train-ing time. This past summer he prepared for a serious cross country eff ort and has made very pleasing training prog-ress throughout the fall. Based on his limited cross country racing experience I think he did a really nice job for us.

Dixon was perennially an integral part of the foundation that supported the Eagles in their quest for MAC Champi-onship titles, as he placed in the top-20 in each of the four conference races that he ran, earning All-MAC Second Team honors twice before being named to the fi rst team in the 2013 campaign. He was also recognized for his work off the course, as he was named to the Academic All-MAC team. Coach Goo-dridge also commended the Nelson, New Zealand native for his contribu-

tions to the team, saying, Harry has been somewhat snake bitten through-out his career with a few leg injuries and untimely illnesses, but he has de-livered in every MAC Championship. He has always been the glue that has kept the team together and successful.

The squad opened up the 2013 cam-paign by hosting the EMU Triangular, which included MAC foes Bowling Green State University and the Univer-sity of Toledo, Aug. 30. EMU won with a commanding 21 points in the eff ort, highlighted by the 1-2-3 fi nish by red-shirt-junior Ian Hancke, junior Cam-eron Trinh, and sophomore Austin Lane. The trio fi nished within a second of each other as Hancke crossed the line at 15:56.20, while Lane swooped in to close out the top three in 15:57.20.

Following a two-week break, the Green and White headed down to Bowling Green, Ohio, to race in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener, Sept. 13. Once again, Hancke paced the Eagles, fi n-ishing third in the 8,000-meter race with a 25:28.33 mark. Lane and Trinh also landed in the top-10, coming in at 25:48.16 and 25:51.93, respectively.

October opened up with some staunch competition for the harriers as they traveled to South Bend, Ind. to com-pete in the Notre Dame Invitational. The race, held on Oct. 4, ended with the Eagles claiming an 18th-place fi n-ish with 461 points in the seeded Mens Blue Race. Dixon was the only top-50 fi nisher in the fi eld that contained nine of the top-40 teams in the na-tion, as his time of 25:11.2 earned him a 43rd-place fi nish for the afternoon.

A pair of rookies also donned the Green and White for the fi rst times in their EMU careers, as Nick Raymond pulled in a time of 27:09.9 in the Blue Race while John Knox placed fi fth in the Open Race with a time of 26:00.2. John and Nick are going to have fi ne careers at EMU, which has already started with them as freshmen standing on the victory po-dium as MAC team champions. Serious thought was given to redshirting them, but I decided that giving them a col-legiate racing experience as freshmen

was best for their development, said Coach Goodridge about the young duo.

Likewise, regarding training freshmen, you can either take an aggressive or nonaggressive approach and either way you can often have inconsistent race re-sults. So whereas I chose an aggressive racing approach, I have taken a very low-key nonaggressive approach with their training and fully expect to see solid development with them by next year, explained Goodridge. Although last fall Nick was a high school national cross country fi nalist, his training back-ground was very atypical. He ran very low mileage with little intensity and for four years he swam each winter as op-posed to distance running training. I felt that he needed a gradual transition into becoming a full-time distance runner in terms of adjusting to increased volume, intensity, and regularity for the de-mands of collegiate competition. Like-wise, John needs time, but he is adjust-ing very well. Both are brave racers and when prepared properly will do quite well. Like the rest of the team they were ill and achy at the championship races, and their results there were not indica-tive of what we will see in the future.

The next week provided some relief in competition, as the squad cruised to a fi rst-place fi nish at the Michi-gan Intercollegiate Championships, Oct. 11 in Hillsdale, Mich. The Eagles

won with 32 points, followed by Big Ten member Michigan State with 75 points to their eff ort. Knox set the pace for the 8,000-meter run, clocking in at 25:50.54. Hancke, Trinh, Lane, and Raymond followed in at fi fth, seventh, ninth, and 10th, respectively. Their performances, along with that of sophomore William Trice, earned them spots on the All-Michigan team.

Continuing on with its third race in as many weeks, EMU traveled to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 19. The seeded Mens Blue Race contained nine top-30 teams, including three in the top-fi ve. The Green and White placed ahead of MAC opponents Miami University, the University of Akron, and Central Michigan University with its 40th-place fi nish. Redshirt junior Warren Witchell was the sole Eagle to land in the top-100, as his time of 24:29.99 was good for 85th in the competitive fi eld. Later in the afternoon, Raymond was the sixth fi nisher in the Mens Open Race and the only Eagle in the top-10 of the 100+ athlete race.

Regarding Witchell, Coach Goodridge has high expectations for his athlete during his fi nal season next year. Its been fun watching Warren develop. He was a soccer player in high school so this is real-ly only his third year of cross country. He was fairly sick the week of the MAC Championship and hadnt re-ally recovered until the day of regionals. I am confi dent that we will see continuing development in him.

In the week leading up to the MAC Championship, the Eagles hosted one fi nal meet on Oct. 25, as they came out dom-inant in the annual EMU Classic. Though the event was not scored, the Eagles were the clear leaders as Kalinowski, Dix-on, sophomore Willy Fink, and Witchell grabbed a 1-2-3-4 fi nish. The meet, according to Goodridge, was used as a controlled training eff ort for most of our MAC squad to fi nish off a good week of training. Kalinowskis time of 15:13.8 additionally earned him the distinction of being named MAC Runner of the Week for the period ending Oct. 29.

The pinnacle of the 2013 season was surely the 2013 MAC Championship on Nov. 2 as the team returned to a familiar course at BGSU. The pack of EMU runners was neck-and-neck with Akrons athletes throughout the majority of the 8,000-meter race, but the Eagles managed to get their scoring runners across the fi nish line ahead of the Zips, taking a fourth-consecu-tive MAC Championship title with 42 points. Kalinowski and Dixon placed third and fi fth, which would earn them All-MAC First Team honors, while Witchell and Fink were named to the second team after fi nishing eighth and 11th. All fi ve of the scoring runners fi nished in the top-20, as senior Daryl Smith sprinted in for a 15th-place turnout in the event. With the victory, Goodridge tied legendary EMU Head Coach Bob Parks for most MAC titles with nine championship teams. Addi-tionally, Goodridge, who was coincidentally celebrating his birthday, was awarded the 2013 MAC Coach of the Year award.

Every championship is certainly rewarding and special, but to win one on your birthday and to have your team surprise you in song to celebrate is very special, said Coach Goodridge. To add another title to the great EMU tradition is and always will be very rewarding. A championship experience is a lot of fun and seeing the pride on the guys faces is very satisfying.

Competition concluded on Nov. 15, when the harriers traveled to Madison, Wisc. for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet. The Eagles went up against regional competition that included No. 11-ranked Indiana University and host school the University of Wisconsin, which had won the previous 11 regional titles. The team fi nished with a 10th-place showing, led by Witchells 29th-place time of 31:18 in the 10,000-meter race. Smith, Dixon, Kalinowski, Fink, Knox, and Raymond also participated in the season-capping meet.

Though the regional meet meant the end of the season, Coach Goodridge was overall pleased with the eff ort of his team, commenting, We havent really been at full strength for the past few weeks as every one of our top sev-en has been bothered by either lingering illness or slight annoying aches, all of which have eff ected their train-ing and racing. We are actually quite fortunate to have been able to win the conference and run solidly at the regional.
