SOLAR IMPULSE PROJECT • Initiated on 2001 by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg. OBJECTIVE:• To develop a manned solar powered aircraft which can fly around the world with solar power only.• Feasibility Study 2002-2003 APPROACH:• Develop a “Demonstrator” aircraft to show a 24hr energy neutral day and night.• Cycle-> HB-SIA• Develop the “Record” aircraft, capable of crossing Atlantic, Pacific in 4 to 5 day’s.

FAQs1. How long is one pilot in the air? Five days. This is how long the plane will take to cross the Atlantic.

2. How were pilots trained? Both pilots went through intensive training, including in yoga and self-

hypnosis.

3.How do the pilots live in the cockpit, go to the toilet? They eat, sleep, drink and even go to the toilet. Short naps are also

possible.

4. Can the pilots sleep? Only short naps when the plane is stable. In emergencies, seat starts

vibrating.

5.Can the aircraft fly on autopilot? It has an electronic co-pilot, which can help the aircraft hold course. It

can be used inshort spells when a pilot is resting.

6. Where's the mission control? The mission control is located in Monaco . 65

ground staff travel with the pilots.7. What happens if something goes wrong while

crossing the ocean? The pilot would bail out and use ocean survival

gear to stay alive until rescue arrives.
