Dear Parent(s)/Caregiver(s), The term has certainly flown by with it being at the end of week 9 already. We wish you a safe and happy Easter long week-end break and hope everybody comes back to school refreshed and ready to tackle the last 2 weeks of term. Remember it is an 11 week term. A reminder about the operation of school speed zones around the Easter holidays. School zones exist for the safety of our children and families; they will operate on Thursday 28th March, then resume on Tuesday 2nd April. Forty-kilometres-an-hour school speed zones operate across New South Wales at all school sites on gazetted school days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil-free days. As the cooler weather approaches please keep in mind the uniform policy. For a student to be out of school uniform they will require a note from home. CAPA News

The CAPA department welcomes Year 7 and lots of new enrolments this year! Our junior students are working hard in Art and in Music, some lovely sounds can be heard as students learn to play keyboard and guitar in music and staff are impressed with the quality of class work and homework being produced by Year 7,8. Keep up the great work. Elective classes and seniors are also hard at work and we welcome our first industrial tech ‘Ceramics’ class in Year 9, who have already produced some creative and technically proficient pieces. We look forward to seeing some lovely work in our VHS Art Exhibition ‘Places and Spaces’ in June at the Lady Denman – Vera Hatton Gallery. Have a great Holiday L Ryder HT CAPA.

CAPA TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL DAY 19TH March, 30 students from 6 local primary school's enjoyed exploring our fabulous Arts facilities on Tuesday.

Students who chose to join the Guitar group were thrilled to spend the day with Mr Barkwith, our very successful HSC student and soon to be recording star - Danielle Colligan and guitarist Lisa Young. With this expert tuition, the group learnt and performed a very sophisticated version of the Gunners "sweet child of mine".

Those who opted to join the visual arts workshop, worked with Ms Roxby and Lara Norton, Zoe de Munck, Jamie Ferguson, Rosemary Defries, Keira Allan, Natasha Cook and Selina Elmer from our Talented Year 10 class, to produce a beautiful pastel still life and a creative wire sculpture.

The students enjoyed not only working in CAPA for the day, but also the opportunity to meet new friends from other schools and sample lunch from our school canteen.

Every year, for the last four years, the Mathematics Faculty has organised excursions for female students in years 9 to 12, to the University of Technology Sydney’s Women in Engineering and IT Hands-on Day. This year, it falls on 5th April. This one day interactive seminar provides opportunities for our female students to find out more about what engineering is, meet university students and professionals and explore the possibilities of engineering and IT as study options and careers. In the past, students were introduced to artificial heart surgery through simple experiments with magnets, batter-ies and wires. They also learnt about building and flying simple model aircraft, gained hands-on experience in constructing a Formula 1 style race car, built a Lego structure to demonstrate the importance of communication in engineering and discovered how mobile robotics engineering was used in recent natural disasters like the New Zealand earthquake. Those are just a few examples and who know what exciting activities await us this year. If you are interested in attending this excursion, please collect your consent forms from Mrs Brewitt from the Mathematics Faculty. Places are limited so first come first served. Thank you

Careers News: In 2012 a fortnightly careers e-newsletter was developed to keep students and their parents up to date with current university, TAFE and workplace opportunities. In 2013 I would like to continue with this project to ensure everyone is aware of any important dates or activities that are coming up. If you would like to be added to this list please complete and return the end section of this form to the school. Please note if you registered your email address last year I will require you to resubmit as I am starting the list afresh in 2013. Looking forward to a positive and productive year in careers! Regards Holly Pastor

Healthy Minds

School Project

On Thursday the 7th March at VHS an interactive student dramatic performance was held. This event was sponsored fully by the St George Foundation and the Shoalhaven Suicide Awareness Network (SSPAN). The project is designed to increase young people’s awareness in decision making, allowing them to explore consequences both positive and negative. Through professional actors our students chose how scenes unfolded, navigating how the actors communicated with one another. Our young people gained a clearer understanding of the impact of life choices from this entertaining experience. Vincentia High would like to sincerely thank SSPAN for this initiative and for their ongoing efforts to support our local young people. Over 80 students were fully sponsored to attend. It was wonderful to see students perform musically at this event and to see the beautiful student artworks that captured the enjoyment of life. You can make a tax deductible donation online to the Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention and Awareness Network online at www.sspan.org.au or buy a south coast entertainment book and all proceeds will go to this worthy cause. The book will be launched later this month and details will be available on how to purchase in a subsequent newsletter. Michelle Hudman (CAPA teacher)
