“Bedazzle - A Bra Competition”

Textile & Design teacher Ms Carrie McIntyre encouraged 33 Vincentia High students from years 8 to 12 to enter the Shoalhaven Breast Cancer Support Group “Bedazzle a Bra Competition”. The bra decorating competition was launched to celebrate the groups 20th Anniversary and to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. Students from all of the High Schools in the Shoalhaven were invited to enter.

Students designed and decorated bras in a vast variety of styles ranging from Disney themes to elaborate styles dripping with jewels, and even bras made of metal. The entries were displayed on the 17th May at the Nowra Golf Club for the Anniversary Luncheon.

The judges were blown away with the high standard of amazing entries from Vincentia High School students. Eileen Davis from Year 10 took out 2nd prize for her bra titled ‘Beauty & the Beast’. Lara Norton from the Year 11 Textiles & Design class won 3rd prize for her ‘Monsters Inc’ themed bra and another 3rd place went to Sharnee Phillis from year 11 for her beautifully decorated bra. 3rd prize was awarded to Wade Garin, Daniel Neall, Jordan De Fries & Jason Laing from the Year 11 Metals & Engineering class for their Bra made of metal. Ann Sudmalis, our Federal Member for Parliament, purchased the metal bra for $500 and is having it welded to the front of her office in Nowra.

Year 10 Husky Big Day Out On Friday, 30th May year 10 embarked on a great journey trekking through the wilds of Vincentia and Huskisson in search of some fun filled outdoor entertainment. Fuelled by a powerful sugar high, (lollies and giant marshmallows, courtesy of Mr Von) onwards we marched towards our highly renown destination - The Huskisson Bowling Club for a game of barefoot bowls and mini-golf. The sky threatened rain, but with concentrated effort and focus we drove the clouds away.

Momentarily we rested and enjoyed the view, the Huskisson Caravan Park climbing spider provided an excellent vantage point to observe all that our beautiful part of the world has on offer. We walked on, through the Huskisson township and towards our final destination, posing for pictures with famed locals, the whale and dolphin statues, as we went. As we drew near the Huskisson Bowling Club a burst of sunshine poked through the clouds and we knew the weather Gods had looked after us. Mr Worthy met us at the bowling green and we launched into a game of bowls. A special thanks goes out to all the community members/volunteers that gave up

their time to assist us learn the game and hone in our skills. Bowls was followed by an exciting game of mini-golf. We shared many laughs, tantrums and moments of pure joy as we moved around the course. We joined year 8 for lunch on the Huskisson soccer field and feasted on sausage sandwiches, more lollies and the odd chocolate bar before returning to school. A big thank you goes to Huskisson and Vincentia Soccer Club for opening their canteen and supporting our welfare day. The behaviour of students could not be faulted during the day. Collectively, year 10 represented everything it is to be a student at Vincentia High School and demonstrated respect, responsibility and personal best. We certainly hit the jackpot as year advisers, and look forward to working with you during your final years at school. Well done year 10! Mr Von and Miss Pastor

Any student who would like to run for the SRC for 2014/2015 please see Ms McIntyre for a nomination form.

The Induction Ceremony for the new SRC will be held in Week 2 of Term 3.

The Lion King The year 8 through to year 12 Textiles & Design classes went to Sydney to see the Lion King Musi-cal to get inspiration for their Costume study. The students were accompanied by Mr Gibson and Ms McIntyre who said that it was a really positive day and the students were buzzing afterwards. Ms McIntyre is looking forward to seeing the students designs!

As Term 2 progresses, the range of learning opportunities available to students in the Support Unit continues to be a source of great interest and pride. The long standing relationships that are well established within the school community are continuing to benefit the students in a variety of settings. Teachers, students and carers are working together to maximise student potential and access to a wide range of curriculum outcomes. An exciting example of the opportunities offered to students was emphasised this week when the Support Unit received a cheque for $2,000 from the Teachers Mutual Bank to continue the development of the newly formed FarmAbility Project. This funding application was capably submitted by Support Unit teachers Ms Fuller & Mr Worthy and was one of only 20 winning applications from a field of over 120 entries statewide. The presentation of a framed certificate and cheque to the Principal and staff at a recent staff meeting was the culmination of many weeks of hard work. This funding will allow for the completion of the project that has far reaching benefits for all the students involved. In addition to the Sustainable Living education being delivered by the FarmAbility Project, students in Ms Fuller’s class have embraced the concept of becoming ‘Environmental Eagles’. This group of students are setting a wonderful example to the rest of the school in the field of environmental education, recycling, sustainable living & vocational outcomes. Currently the ‘Environmental Eagles’ are focussing their attention on Vincentia High School, however, there are plans to extend and ‘spread their wings’ to include the local community. Look out for them in your local neighbourhood soon! Throughout this week we have conducted the very important Year 12 ADHC Post-school Options assessment meetings for all students who will be transitioning from school at the end of the year. These meetings coincide with the ‘Transition To Work’ taster days that have been offered by the range of service providers - Greenacres, Essential Personnel, House With No Steps, Life Without Barriers and Flagstaff. Parents and Carers will also be invited to attend the annual Expo of Post – school Options Providers in September. Another new and exciting opportunity for students in the Support Unit is the chance to participate in the Illawarra Southern Stars performance in August. A number of students from the Support Unit have nominated themselves for this outstanding event and in the weeks leading up to the performance night, students will be proudly practicing and working hard to raise funds to support this Term 3 highlight. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the combined efforts of teachers, SLSO’s, students, parents and carers who work together to enhance the learning outcomes for students on a daily basis. Whether it be in academic pursuits, sporting prowess, vocational success or personal triumph, to witness the growth in student outcomes through collaborative efforts is a truly rewarding experience - thank you! Yours in education Mrs Sandy Clark Head Teacher Support

Dealing with cyber bullying

Like other forms of bullying such as verbal abuse, social exclusion and physical aggression, cyber bullying may result in the targeted person developing social, psychological and educational issues. While cyber bullying is similar to 'real life' bullying it also differs in some ways:

it can occur 24/7 and a child can be targeted at home it can involve harmful material being widely and rapidly sent to a large audience, for

example, rumours and images can be posted on public forums it can provide the bully with a sense of relative anonymity and distance from the

target, so there is a lack of immediate feedback or consequences.

Here are some basic steps to help deal with cyber bullying

Ignore it - don't respond to the bully. If they don't get a response they may get bored and go away.

Block - the person. This will stop you seeing messages or texts from a particular ` person.

Tell someone - tell an adult you can trust. You may want to talk to your mum, dad or a brother or sister. You can contact the Cybersmart Online Helpline service, call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, visit the Kids Helpline website or the Headspace centre.

Keep the evidence - this can be useful in tracking the bully down. Save texts, emails, online conversations or voicemails as evidence.

Report it to: your school - they should have policies in place about bullying and cyberbullying. your ISP and/or phone provider, or the website administrator - there are actions they can take to help. the police - if there is a threat to your safety the police will help. Call Triple Zero (000) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Further information about cyber bullying is available at the Cybersmart website

WEP Student Exchange A Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity!

World Education Program (WEP) Australia is now accepting applications from students who wish to participate in 2014 summer or 2015 semester and year exchange programs. Students can choose to study and live life with a carefully selected host family in more than 25 countries.

Exchange students return to Australia with maturity, confidence, and in many cases, proficiency in another language. If learning another language is not for your child, excellent programs to the USA, Canada and Ireland are also available.

I have no doubt that I will remember so many things fondly from this year and as it comes to a close I realise more and more that I don't want it to end. Since going back to school after the summer holidays I have noticed a change in my life here in France, not only is it much easier to follow the lessons and work in school but I had also grown closer to my friends over the summer holidays and it truly feels as if I have known them for years. If I had to redo my exchange, I would not change a single thing.
