Vincentia Vibe - The voice of our school Term 3 Wk 7A 28/08/2014
Bundanon Transmit 2014
Last Friday, 12 students from the Dance & Didge Troupe took part in ‘Transmit 2014 ‘- a multi-layered performance at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre co-ordinated by the Bundanon Trust.
The performance was a collaboration with other high schools in the region and included contemporary dance, spoken word poetry, rap, song and a didgeridoo and clapstick item. Teenage Aboriginal identity, belonging and connection to country are some of the themes that were explored. A particular highlight was Shakeela Williams singing 'Walawaani' - a song she composed with world renowned musician William Barton that was entirely in the Dhurga language.
The students were fortunate to work with acclaimed artists throughout the rehearsal and performance process. They performed the show twice on Friday evening and each show was booked out. The audience gained valuable insight to the concerns of our youth and were lucky to be part of a celebration of culture and boundless creativity. Jonathan Hill - Dance & Didge Coordinator
The Support Unit Receives a $2,000 Grant
Vincentia High School Support Unit was awarded a $2,000 grant to continue the development of the newly formed FarmABILITY Project. The successful funding application to the Teachers Mutual Bank was one of only 20 winning submissions out of over 120 entries state wide. The FarmABILITY project aims for students with disabilities to achieve educational outcomes whilst learning skills that are lifelong, practical and transferable to life outside school. In addition, the ability to utilise the produce in their cooking program will help ensure students appreciate the food cycle and be inspired to cook and eat healthy food.

Unit ‘Environmental Eagles’
Support Unit students were invited to a special lunch this week to celebrate the achievements of the ‘Environmental Eagles’ and the presentation of their new high visibility work shirts. As a part of their ‘Sustainability’ focus in Science this year, IO class teacher Ms Kellie Fuller said the students have been cleaning up the school yard twice a week and learning about the importance of recycling. Last term the class purchased recycling bins and long handled grabbers for picking up the rubbish. The students compost food scraps and know what rubbish can go into the red, green or yellow bins.
Tasman Harvey presented a slide show to the students about: ‘What we can do to prevent rubbish entering our oceans!’ The Environmental Eagles were presented their new T/Shirts and all enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Ms Kylieanne Cody and her class.
Next term the Environmental Eagles will be going out into our community and cleaning up along the Collingwood Beach cycle way to help prevent rubbish entering the ocean.

Dealing with cyber bullying
Like other forms of bullying such as verbal abuse, social exclusion and physical aggression, cyber bullying may result in the targeted person developing social, psychological and educational issues. While cyber bullying is similar to 'real life' bullying it also differs in some ways:
it can occur 24/7 and a child can be targeted at home it can involve harmful material being widely and rapidly sent to a large audience, for
example, rumours and images can be posted on public forums it can provide the bully with a sense of relative anonymity and distance from the target,
so there is a lack of immediate feedback or consequences.
Here are some basic steps to help deal with cyber bullying
Ignore it - don't respond to the bully. If they don't get a response they may get bored and go away.
Block - the person. This will stop you seeing messages or texts from a particular ` person.
Tell someone - tell an adult you can trust. You may want to talk to your mum, dad or a brother or sister. You can contact the Cybersmart Online Helpline service, call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, visit the Kids Helpline website or the Headspace centre.
Keep the evidence - this can be useful in tracking the bully down. Save texts, emails, online conversations or voicemails as evidence.
Report it to: your school - they should have policies in place about bullying and cyberbullying. your ISP and/or phone provider, or the website administrator - there are actions they can take to help. the police - if there is a threat to your safety the police will help. Call Triple Zero (000) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Further information about cyber bullying is available at the Cybersmart website
