Year 10-12 students impressed with Variety of Universities
It has been a very exciting and eventful first half of the year in the careers department. The University of Canberra sent two student representatives to tell us all about the courses on offer at UC and provide us with some information about life in the nation’s capital. We were all lucky enough to receive University branded stress balls to help us deal with the pressures of senior life!
The University of Wollongong conducted a number of presentations for year 10, 11 and 12 students. We learnt about degree options at both Wollongong and Shoalhaven campus, the selective entry process and bonus ATAR points. Vincentia High School students were also impressed by the wide variety of social clubs and activities run by the University of Wollongong to make student life more enjoyable.
Recently Charles Sturt University called in to promote the tertiary opportunities available at their campuses. Vincentia High School students were surprised to learn about the number of scholarships available to help support students in their university studies. We also found out how important it is to apply for these benefits, as many scholarships do not get awarded each year. Students in year 12 can generally start applying for scholarships for the university of their choice from about September.
Fantastic Stories from Captain Wilson
Last month Vincentia High School received a visit from Captain Kim Wilson of Defence Force Recruiting. Captain Wilson shared some fantastic stories of her expe-rience in the ADF with a group of students interested in learning more about Defence Force careers. There was a lot to take in during Captain Wilson’s presenta-tion. We learnt about the recruitment process in the ADF, trade career opportunities and officer selection. Captain Wilson received many questions during the presentation and was happy to give her honest opinion to the group.
Yr 10 Work Experience Learning About the World of Work
Year 10 have been preparing for their work experience, which will be held in week 6 of this term (20th-24th August). Students are reminded to be on their best be-haviour while they are out on work experience and enjoy their time learning about the world of work.
Best Time of the Year for Year 12 Students
We are approaching the busiest time of the year for our year 12 students. With the trial HSC exams in full swing now is the time to be thinking about the future and planning some options for the end of school. Students interested in pursuing a university education should have received their UAC PIN in the mail. A UAC PIN allows senior students to create a UAC account and select university preferences online. Vincentia High School will hold an information session about this process in the coming weeks, so keep your eye out for more information.

Making A Difference
We live in an unequal society with the odds stacked against students from disadvantaged backgrounds. A report published this week; “Making a Difference” records the views of 11 to 17 year old students on growing up poor. The children reported that they deny their own needs in order to protect their parents; they learn not to ask, want or expect. At school this means, unfortunately, not participating in excursions, school activities and in the worst case, school in general. Higher income students earn a university entry score of 81.2 compared with 68.8 for low income students.
We are a Priority School and have been a National Partnerships school, with extra resources provided to address this performance gap. We have funds to support students’ involvement in school activities and in extra-curricular activities. As a school we provide a wide range of activities to draw students into en-gaging in school at little to no cost. We need your help. Please support and encourage you children to engage in the activities available at school. Raise their expectations of what education can offer as it is through engagement that we can reduce the gap in educational outcome.
Parents Don't Despair You Are Not Alone When it Comes to the HSC Year 12 approach their next to last hurdle this week with the Trial HSC. There are a lot of jangled nerves, stressed students and dummies being spat across the Bay & Basin. But it is not the time to give up after coming so far. Parents don’t despair; you are not alone in your struggle with the HSC and the impending independence of your child. The Charles Sturt University has a parents page which offers advice to parents on surviving the HSC. They report Richard Cracknell, Counsellor and District Guidance Officer, as saying "The most obvious forms of support parents can offer are the practical, physical things: Provide a good place to study, balanced meals, encourage sensible levels of sleep, some form of regular exercise and encourage moderation in late night parties and alcohol consumption. Many students during this time are going through torment. There may be high stress levels, the fear of letting down their family, fear of failing as well as worrying about leaving home, leaving lifelong friends and the prospect of having to live in an alien city environment. How can we approach this as parents: be supportive and encouraging, highlight their strengths and successes, roll with the explosive outbursts (it is nor-mal), avoid confrontations over minor matters. Encourage your child to seek help from the school (we are all onboard on this roller coaster journey); Take an interest in what they are doing. Remember the occasional hug and "I love you" do not go astray, even when they are 18 years old. This is a time of growing independence so let them have as much as you can stand. The more independent they can be dealing with Year 12, the better the preparation for life after school. Remember that you are not alone and we can’t get it right all the time. Year 12 is a difficult time for students as well as parents and teachers.
Fancy footwork at Futsal
Mr Ryan travelled with our Vincen a High boys to Penrith Sports stadium on Thursday 9th Sept to compete in the NSW State
Futsal Championships.
Team members Michael Hampton, Blake McGinn, Connor McQueen, Jake Moffat, Owen Browne, Rivar Roberts and Kenny
Dann played some great football. Their pool found them up against some tough teams. Glenwood, Springwood and Bossley
Park.
The team par cipated with outstanding sportsmanship and effort, despite being unable to post the wins necessary to pro‐
gress to the finals, all in all it was a great experience for all involved.

Ambassador for Australia
Girl Guides chose Vincentia High student to be their only representative.
Earlier this year after lodging an application and being interviewed Laura Taylor of Yr 10 at Vincentia High School was selected as the only Australian to represent Girl Guides Australia at a Girl Guide Camp in Singapore.
With a chaperone, Laura spent a n exhilarating week travelling Malaysia before the camp. She rode elephants, went caving, and was climbed all over by monkeys, having one even steal her ice cream! She visited firefly caverns, walked through temples and even went up the tallest twin towers in the world. Laurens experiences were unique including having the dead skin nibbled off her feet by fish.
The second week was spent in camp in Singapore. Girl Guides from all around the world gathered together for a week of fun and fellowship. The camp theme was “girls worldwide say : together we can save the planet”. Many of the activities had a recycling theme. Laura learnt how to weave a basket using rolled up newspapers. Guides were also personally challenged physically with obstacle courses which involved a lot of mud. Another highlight was a visit to Universal Studios were she went on her first roller coaster ride – very exciting!!!
Laura had an amazing experience and has made many new friendships from around the world and has also discovered her love of traveling and hopes to do lots more.
