Congratulations to all of our students who have been positively engaged in their learning and have produced some fantastic pieces of work as part of their assessment schedule. A special mention to our Stage 4 students who are responsible for some of our most exciting projects! Year 7 got frighteningly dark in their ‘Scary Things’ unit, producing a range of projects for our upcoming ‘Fright Fair’. Year 8 studied ‘The Hero’s Journey’ and completed their study with an exploration of film texts; creating stop-motion animations based on their own hero narrative. Well done to all! What’s been happening in English? We are pleased to report that many of our students are entering the writing competitions on offer and we are thrilled with the quality of student writing. If you enjoy writing and would like the opportunity to win some exciting prizes (including cash) for yourself and the school, see Mr Brindley for details of current comps! Early last term we sent a group of enthusiastic students to the South Coast debating camp in Burrill Lake. Students were coached by experienced coaches and adjudicators in techniques for success in debates. All reports were positive and we were incredibly impressed by the way our students represented themselves and Vincentia High School. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour in next years debating competitions. Big thanks to Miss Keogh for coordinating and to Mrs Tinkler for helping transport our students to and from the venue. Students in Years 7, 8 & 12 were fortunate to attend a workshop by Australian poet, Steven Herrick, who entertained our junior students. Our Year 12 students were given a workshop that related directly to their study of Herrick’s text, ‘The Simple Gift’, this was undoubtedly beneficial to their study and we feel very fortunate that we can provide such valuable learning experiences for all. Finally, as the HSC examinations approach for our 2013 cohort we would like to congratulate them on their efforts and send them positive thoughts for this period. We are proud of you! Vincentia High Adventure Race Team Vincentia High School entered two squads of students into the Noah’s Adventure race on the 7th September, 2013.

A glorious day of sunshine and little wind presented ideal conditions for our boys and girls squad to tackle an orienteering base course of 5 kms of mountain biking, 4 kms of running, 3kms of canoeing and another 10 kilometres of mountain biking.

Students were paired up and were required to find markers which were located on trees, telegraph poles and bridges. Flat tyres, blisters on feet and difficult markers to be found were all part of the day’s outings.

Congratulations to Tristan Ward and Liam Dooley for winning the event outright with Wade Garin and Mitchell Stalhult coming a strong third.

Vincentia High School won the youth schools division and congratulations to the following students for their excellent participation in the team event: Shannon O’Beirnie, Danyon Grainger, John Carroll, Shamus McGough, Jordan De Vries, Owen Browne, Brooke Crossland, Karla Thompson, Leah Davidson, Charlotte Brady, Beatrix Brady, Elyse Marr, Teah McNally, Rebecca Miles, Annie Kennedy and Samara Brown. They are to be all commended on their positive sportsmanship and school pride. A big thank you to the parents for assisting with transport to training venues. The adventure continues with Bike Week and Ride Around The Bay being celebrated this week.

Sailors with disABILITIES (SWD)

Sailors with disABILITIES is a Sydney based non-profit organisation that teaches sailing and yacht racing to children and adults the physical, intellectual, mental and financial disadvantages. SWD has taken part in 16 Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht races, winning its division in the tragic 1998 event. SWD founder David Pescud was at the helm then and in 2003 when the yacht Kayle set the world record for a non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation of Australia in 3 days 1 hour. Our Year 12 student Grace Kennedy is a participant with Sailors with disABILITIES (see photos below).

Stay tuned for the launch of Face Boat, an initiative to raise money for Grace Kennedy’s Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race campaign! Go to www.faceboat.org Upload a photo. Make a donation. Join Grace and the crew on an adventure of a lifetime

Attention all parents and carers of

Vincentia High Students past and present! Vincentia High School opened in 1993, so 2013 means it has been educating our youth for twenty years and we are into the twenty first year. So let’s celebrate - let us acknowledge the great work that has been done over these years!

The P&C is asking for contributions in the form of written memories from the school community that recall these great moments, programs and people. What do you recall that stands out during your association with Vincentia High?

Remind us of some of the achievements in education, the arts, sport, social humanitarian and the development of the school.

This history is the community’s history so let’s share it!

Please provide your story with plenty of detail via email to Jenny Moffat ([email protected]) or drop it in personally to the P&C twenty first celebration box located in the reception area of the school.

Look for articles that are already appearing in the South Coast Register and will continue to do so until we culminate with a special assembly in November.
