A Taste Of Things

To Come!

Last week, over 80 Years 4 & 5 students from

Vincentia, Sussex Inlet, Jervis Bay, Huskisson, St

Georges Basin, Tomerong and Sanctuary Point

public schools attended a ‘Taste of High School’ day at our school. The students were divided into

groups and were given a taste of some of the subjects that they will be studying next year, including

Food Technology, Visual Arts, Music and Physical Education.

Throughout the day the enthusiastic students cooked a yummy ham and cheese pastry, channelled

their creative side by designing an individual photograph, received a master class on the different

types of musical instruments and undertook some physical activity in the school hall.

By the end of the day the primary school students had made some new friends and had a better

understanding of what great things await them in Year 7.

Thanks to Ms Morris, Ms Roxby, Mr Newton, Mr

Ryan, Ms Codey, Mr Donohue and the Vincentia

High School students who made this day such a

success.

ACT Schools Mountain Bike

Championships As the rain cleared 42 eager students dried their bikes and

packed wet weather gear for Canberra. After a very long bus

trip we arrived at Mount Stromlo to find clear weather and yes,

sunshine! Students had lots of fun taking on tracks which were not available in the race the next day - riding to the

top of Mount Stromlo was the highlight for many of our juniors.

That evening we farewelled Year 12 – Wade Garin, Danyon Grainger & Brock Nichols for their contribution to sport

since Year 7. A big thankyou to the parents who supported the students, Phil Kennedy, Jason Andre, Tamika

Purnell, Darryl Head & Ian Campbell.

Mr Volpatti, Mr Nelmes, Mr Foerster & Ms Boyce congratulate our

students on their friendship and positive encouragement with team

mates and other schools on the track.

Congratulations to the Junior Girls, Courtney Edwards, Nellie Gray,

Ruby Young & Tilhaney Grainger for coming in first place and to the

Intermediate girls, Rhianna Brown, Elyse Marr & Terri Milani for the

success of second place.

Wow! What an adventure we had at Canberra -

riding, pushing our limit and enjoying each

other’s company. Many adventures were had on

the trip away. The adventure started for Troy

even before he arrived at school! Due to the

heavy rain, Troy’s property was flooded; he escaped in a tractor and was taken to safe place where he could be

picked up in a 4WD. Troy made it to school without even getting his shoes wet and we set off in the buses for the

ultimate journey.

After a 4 hour trip in the bus we finally made it to Stromlo; the mountains we would be riding over for the next 2

days. We unloaded the bikes and got ready to hit the trail. On entry to the track we discovered that Canberra

hadn’t missed out on the rain; the track was slippery and muddy. Despite the conditions, the mountain bike team

continued on like it was a perfect day. The mud subsided as the mountain got higher; the riders who tackled the

altitude were rewarded with a beautiful view of Canberra and a long fast downhill track. Once our day of riding was

over it was time for a hot shower and a hearty meal. We were very tired and covered in mud!

Day 2 started early; eager to race we quickly got ourselves sorted and onto the buses. We arrived back at Stromlo

just in time to get a spot to camp down for the day. Nerves were high in preparation for the race but it didn’t

dampen the mood or the smiles on our faces.

The first riders lined up - 3,2,1 and they’re off! The riders flew past as fast as they could along the tarmac. The

cheers of the crowd were heard until the riders were engulfed by trees. The track was packed with riders all flying

through the single track trying to overtake each other and finish as quickly as they could.

All day, riders endured the long switchbacks and flew down the hill. Lap after lap was completed and the smiles

continued throughout the whole day. It was a race to remember!! With mud on our tyres and tired muscles the

day ended with spirits still high.

overall performers in a recent rugby

league carnival having demonstrated

characteristics such as determination to run the ball, ball skills and teamwork.

Congratulations to Lily Wheeler who is the Regional

Under 12 Girls Age Champion. What a fantastic

achievement! Lily went on to represent Vincentia

High School at the State Athletics Carnival, taking 5th

place in the 100m and 6th place in the Long Jump.

Well done Lily!

R U OK?

Day In Week 9 our school celebrated R U OK? Day.

The R U OK? Foundation is a not-for-profit

organisation dedicated to encouraging all people to

regularly and meaningfully ask friends, family and

colleagues “Are you ok?“. Staff and students

supported this great day by wearing yellow t-shirts

and face paint. $100 worth of R U OK? wristbands

were sold at recess and lunch with all funds going

back to the R U OK? Foundation.

Host Family required for a

Spanish Exchange Student

for 8 weeks We have in our school a Spanish Exchange Student who is studying in Year 10. The student is a

valuable member of the school community, she loves our school and has many friends here who

she would love to remain with.

Hosting is voluntary and is a rewarding experience, enabling your family to make friends

overseas and see the world differently. We hope as a community we can offer this student a

chance to continue her education here with us.

My name is Bryan Pike, I am accredited Drama Teacher (Grad Dip of Education, UOW), Theatre Nepean graduate and award winning filmmaker.

I am offering After School Drama Classes in Term 4 from 8th October to 3

rdDecember, Thursday

afternoons from 5 – 7pm at the Nth Nowra Community Centre. There will be a Junior Class (Ages 8 – 12) from 5pm – 6pm and

a Senior Class (Ages 12 – 18) from 6pm – 7pm. End of term showcases will occur on the 10

th December for parents and guests.

I am planning to do Units of Clowning with the Junior Classes and Mask with the Senior Classes.

I am also offering private lessons in vocal warm-ups, articulation exercises, learning accents and acting for the screen.
