Presidents Corner

Hello Gambier Bay Family!

What a great time we had in Norfolk at our USS Gambier Bay/USS Kitkun Bay reunion. If you were at the 2015 reunion you may remember our guest speaker at our memorial service, Jim Zobel, from the MacArthur Memorial Museum/Norfolk. We were able to see Jim when we visited the MacArthur Memorial Museum. One of the highlights of the tour at the museum was Leyte Gulf exhibit. We also toured the Norfolk Naval Station and enjoyed a motor coach guided tour through the maritime seaport’s historical district. Our second day tour was another motor coach guided tour through Virginia Beach and a stop at the Military Aviation Museum. The museum is home to one of the largest private collections of WWII and Korean War era fighters and bombers. Our last stop was to visit the historic Cape Henry Lighthouse.

Don’t forget to support the Association by shopping our ship store! We have some great items, mousepads, ladies BLING shirts, polo shirts, personalize granite etched tiles, our Men of the Gambier Bay book, and may other items. Also, remember we have the following DVDs available ($15.00/see enclosed order form for the DVDs and the ship store).

• Just released – we have on DVDs the survivor oral stories with bonus material that was made by the twelve First Class Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy who attended our 2014 Taffy III reunion in San Diego.

• Also have available our memorial service DVD from our 2014 Taffy III reunion in San Diego, which was held on the USS Midway. If you were unable to attend that memorable reunion this is a great way to see how we honor, remember, and recognize our survivors.

• Plus our Life of Duty DVD, which was produced by the NRA, and it features Norm St Germain and Fred Grabos, USS Gambier Bay survivors.

• If you have any questions, you can contact me at [email protected]

Marlene, thanks for all the work you and Paula are doing for the Gambier Bay Association. Really enjoyed the Scuttlebutt newsletter with all its news. Thought you would like to know that the midshipmen who attended the 70th anniversary were commissioned and graduated on May 22nd including our grandson, Justin Loomis—great-grandson of R.W. Roby, a Gambier Bay pilot. I’ve attached a couple of pictures of some of the ones that were there in Oct. They all have fond memories of the veterans they met and the stories they heard. It was an experience that they will treasure as they accrue their own experiences with the fleet or the Marines.Regards, (Thank you for sharing these pictures-and it looks like Justin cut his hair under his cap. Those of us whoJan Loomis attended last years reunion will not forget the midshipmen)
