Most of you know that I am very big on quoting our Found-
ing Fathers Think on these words written long ago by
Thomas Paine Had it not been for America there had been
no such thing as Freedom left throughout the whole universe
That is a very profound statement
The purpose for my message is strictly as a reminder to you
of just who you are and what is your commitment to the secu-
rity of this free nation
From time to time I think we must be reminded what the title ldquoMarinerdquo really means
It is not something that you put on and take off When we took the oath we were vol-
unteers the only branch of Armed Forces first to fight for right and freedom In the
Marinesrsquo Hymn it says ldquoWe are proud to claim the title of United States Marinesrdquo
I read in the book about Chesty Puller when they were walking out of the Chosin he
shouted encouragement to his men ldquoDonrsquot forget that yoursquore First Marines Not all the
Communist in hell can overrun yourdquo
There is great pride in who we are but there is also requirements and standards we are
held by Our promise was ldquoleave no man behindrdquo
Recently the Marine Foundation went to great expense to hold a PTSD clinic at the
Marine Barracks Indy It did not cost anyone to attend this clinic But very few Marine
Corps League members even signed up for it
In our past wars there were many who were ldquoleft behindrdquo Day in and day out they
still live in that trauma that does not leave them Their wounds are not seen They are
actually crying for our help
If you are a veteran and any of your fellow veterans need help it is what is expected
of us to come to their aid
Marine is for life Your commitment to serve was sealed when you took the oath Yes
it is totally volunteer but there are many who need you Maybe they do not say it in
words but I see them every day I am asking any who read this letter would you please
consider learning all that is available to help a fellow veteran Make a commitment to
come to any future clinic If we can save one life our efforts are worth it
Most Respectfully Semper Fidelis

Formation of the Confederate Marinesndash 16 March 1861
On the opposite side of the lines the Congress of the Confederate States authorized the creation of the Confederate States Marine Corps on 16 March 1861Initially authorized at 45 officers and 944 enlisted men the CSMC was increased to 1026 enlisted men on 24 Septem-ber 1862 but actual manpower never approached that number maxing below 550 total Its first and only Commandant Colonel Lloyd J Beall stood the corps up in Richmond and
headquartered it at Fort Darling
The Confederate Marines much like its progenitor played small roles through the Civil War Much of its service in the war was shipbound such as the CSS Virginias famous duel with the USS Monitor at Battle of Hampton Roads Detachments on land guarded several naval bases including the defense of the CSMCs headquarters at the Battle of Drewrys Bluff One of the few notable operations included an assault on a Union prisoner of war camp at Point Lookout Toward the end of the war Marines were pressed for the defense of Rich-
mond such as the Battle of Saylers Creek
