D on't you

remember

when there were

28 to 31 days and

4 to 5 weeks in a

month? Seems

like those were

the good old days.

The days and weeks are getting shorter, oh well

that's what happens when we get older.

I attended my first Tell America presentation at

St Paul's Catholic School. I was impressed on

how attentive and interested the students were.

Our presenters were interesting and after hear-

ing what they said, I felt that I might have some-

thing to offer. I would invite everyone to come

and see if they also can add something for the

students.

We have had a good increase in our membership

numbers; I encourage the new members to get

active in our projects with Tell America, and the

fund raising efforts at the stores.

See Gene Zender about ordering the Chapter

shirts. His phone number is 352-748-0112, it on-

ly takes 2 weeks to have your own shirt.

Carol Becker has resigned as Chapter Photogra-

pher. We are looking for a replacement. The du-

ties are: Take and maintain a photographic rec-

ord of the Chapter's activities, and maintain a

pictorial roster of all members (see Tom Thiel).

Need a digital camera.

April 1st will find Tom Thiel conducting a com-

puter class at the Leesburg Senior Center 2:00 to

4:00 If you have concerns about your computer

and how to maintain files you should attend and

become an expert. Please contact Tom in ad-

vance about any items you would like to have

Tom discuss at the session.

The University of Central Florida’s Veterans His-

tory Project would like to interview all our mem-

bers about our experiences in Korea, during and

after the war. They will come here to do the in-

terviews in Leesburg and/or the Villages. Contact

Tom who is compiling a list of Chapter 169 mem-

bers willing to be interviewed ..

The annual Chapter Picnic is April 22nd 10:30 to

1:30, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and soft drinks will

be served at 11:00, we must clear the building by

2:00. Please bring a covered dish to share. The

location is Hickory Point Pavilion off SR 19 in

Tavares (See page 7 for directions)

Gene Zender said we will be conducting a Tell

America Fund Drive at Walmart on 466 by the

Villages High School on April 11th at both doors.

Joel Briggs is the Captain Please let him know if

you are available to work the shifts at 8:00 to

11:00, 11:00 to 2:00, 2:00 to 5:00; its like having

two teams so please step up. Call Joel at 352-233

-9320

The next Board Meeting will be April 8. From now on it will be in the same room as our Regu-lar meeting, but we will start at 1:30.

The growth in attendance has made this change necessary. I am proud that this had to happen. Thanks to all. But lets remember, when a person is speaking QUIT the side conversations.

I n March, our Tell America

team went to St Paul's

School in Leesburg. All grades

from the fifth grade through the

eighth grade attended.

Our presentation was in their

cafeteria so all students could

attend the one presentation

making it an easy day for us.

We were scheduled from 10AM

to 11AM and could have used

some more time.

Gloria Corbet did the introduc-

tion telling about the war and

then introducing each speaker

in turn in order of their service

in Korea. Tom Thiel, Jim Cor-

bet, and Al Schuetz talked about

their war experiences. Al also

talked about doing the Revisit

Korea Trip with his wife.

They were followed by Sue Ma-

son and Joel Briggs with stories

of their service time and Joel

summing up with how Korea

has improved itself over the last

60+ years.

Three chapter members, Francis

Furrie, Art Iversen, and Frank

Keaser came to watch the pro-

gram and were interested in

telling their stories at a later

date.

The students were given the op-

portunity to talk to the vets and

see the displays they had

brought.

There are seven members who

have been on the TA team but

did not participate this year.

We have one last presentation

scheduled on 15 Apr at Leesburg

High School. We have multiple

classes of the JROTC there from

7:30PM to 2:30PM.

In addition, Chief Dixon is retir-

ing at the end of this year. We

have four scheduled to come

and would like

more to come to

honor Chief Dix-

on.

If some of you

who haven't

been able to tell

your stories this

year would like

to come and

help out the pro-

gram as well honor Chief Dixon,

I would consider scheduling half

days for the presenters.

If you would like to attend to see

what the program is like, call

me.

Contact me at 352-483-0570 or

at [email protected] to let

me know what you would like to

do.

If anyone can help see The Capt. of the Drive you

can help. We need some new faces and all the help

we can get. 352-748-0112 These are Tell America Fund Drives because our mis-

sion is to Tell America about the Korean War. The

daisies we pass out have information, so do the TA

Trifold brochures. To the extent we can and it is ap-

propriate we should tell the shoppers about the Kore-

an War. It meets our mission, and improves contribu-

tions!

Theresa Ronnebaum, Identity Theft

Victim Specialist with the Florida Attorney Gen-

eral office spoke strongly about identity theft and

how to avoid it at our March 25 Regular Member

meeting at the Senior Center. She also provided

handout information about the services offered

by her office. Her card is below.

Color Guard activity for the

month of March was a little

slow, finally as we only had two

ceremonies.

On March the 14th,at Veterans

Memorial At Fountain Park,

Leesburg, we did a flag burning

with AMVETS Post 2006 under

the direction of Don Van Beck.

A. Iversen, B .Shumaker, F.

Keaser and G. Zender. Also in

attendance was our new Guard,

Frank Furrie.

On the 27th, we will be covering

the presentation of the Korean

Ambassador for Peace Medals at

The Armory. This will be

at 11:00 am I'm hoping every-

body shows up for this.

On the 28th, we will be at the

Rural King store in Leesburg on

Hyw 441-27at 11:00

So far, nothing for April, but it's

early.

May 25th (Memorial Day) we

will be at Ferran Park Eustis for

the placing of the Wreath and

ceremonies.

We really need more Color

Guard members, both through-

out Lake County, and at the Vil-

lages. I’d like to invite especially

our new members, to consider

serving with your Chapter’s Col-

or Guard.

UCF Veterans History Project is compiling the memories of

Central Florida Veterans for posterity, and for

history. And also for the Library of Congress.

My March 9 interview lasted for about two

hours. It was very casual and enjoyable.

Why am I championing the UCF VHP? Because I

believe you should be interviewed. I know there

are many stories to tell. Stories that the public

should be able to access. Something for future

historians across FL and the Nation to be able to

access. And also because UCF wants to interview

us. They will do the interviews in Leesburg or

The Villages. I am compiling a list of Chapter

169 members desiring/willing to be interviewed.

Please let me know that you would like to be in-

terviewed. Do this today, please. You will not be

sorry you did.

Convention will be May 16 at

VFW Post 3282, 5810 S Wil-

liamson Bvd, Port Orange, FL.

It will be a one-day business

meeting and culminates with

an evening banquet.

Because you are a KWVA 169

member you also are automat-

ically a member of DoF.

The Department wants all

KWVA members to attend,

and we also encourage you to

go to the Convention.

Contact Art Iversen if you are

Picnic April 22—Hickory Point—9 until 2

M embers and spouses, significant others,

survivors—please come to our Annual Pic-

nic from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hickory

Point Park Pavilion off SR19 south of Tavares

(for GPSers, the address IS NOT 21341 Ste Rd

19).

Burgers, hot dogs, buns, relishes, soft drinks,

etc., will be provided by the chapter; members

are asked to please bring a covered dish.

We will be joined by our friends from the Korean

Baptist Church in Ocala, who have so kindly in-

vited us to their church on two occasions now.

Note that this year we have changed the time for

the picnic to 9 to 2 with the picnic meal between

11 and 12 noon. We did this for health concerns,

especially diabetics.

And again, we

express much

appreciation to

Char and Jack Corscadden for donating the con-

diments.. [Big help]

Some reminders, especially for our new mem-

bers. Those coming from Leesburg and The Vil-

lages should consider taking US 27 south to CH

48 at Okahumpka (left) and thence to Howey-in-

the-Hills to SR19 (left) and cross the Harris Lake

Bridge to the park, also on the left. Finally,

THE PARK DOES NOT PERMIT DOGS.

If you plan to come and have not been counted

either at a Senior Center or Eisenhower Center

meeting, please email or call Bill Shumaker so

that we can better plan.

HooJung Jones Kennedy and

Don Kennedy, presented

sixteen Ambassador For

Peace Medals to recipients

from Chapter 169 and Flori-

da 24th Infantry Division

Association members who

had previously applied for

and been accepted by the

South Korean Consulate in

Atlanta.

The medals themselves came

from the South Korean Consu-

late in Canada, thanks to

HooJung and Don, who wanted

to extend South Korean appreci-

ation to American Servicemen

who helped keep a free Korea.

We want to thank Mayor Den-

nison for being there. And ex-

tend our appreciation to Senator

Nelson, and to Congressman

Webster for their recognition of

our medal recipients.

And, we need to direct our ap-

preciation to our friends in the

Armory too.

Carol took many photo-

graphs for which we likewise

appreciate; I have edited

them to bring out the rele-

vance of each photo.

Bob Peters and the crew

from LakeFrontTV’s Salute

were there to video record the

event, as were several local me-

dia outlets.

We extend our heart-felt appre-

ciation to HooJung and Don for

their thoughtfulness, and efforts

to make these medals available.

We should also thank all those

who have over the past several

years enabled the Chapter

to present medals to its

members. At the serious

risk of overlooking some-

one, the following names

come to mind: Joe Ryu,

Eddie Ko, the Kim Family,

and Dwight Brown—

thank you all!

For those new members coming

aboard who desire medals, the

Chapter plans to periodically

collect your applications, and

then submit these to the South

Korean Consulate in Atlanta.

I was very sad to miss the event

due to a respiratory condition

that I did not want to transmit

to anyone; but from what folks

tell me every thing was truly

beautiful.

We received a phone call today (4/1/15) from Don

and Gerry Good; they have relocated to Harrisburg,

PA to be near their children. They are living in an as-

sisted living facility; phone number is 717-903-9902.

They sent their best wishes to Chapter 169. I believe

they were sad to leave the Leesburg area. They asked if

there was a Chapter in the area; there is not.

1953. They moved to Sterling in

1958. Olavi was employed by

W e have had the “Skills

and Interest Question-

naire” for a at least five or so

years. It is page 3 of the New

Member Application form.

New applicants have mostly

filled out this form, and we have

collected them.

But we have not done very much

with these forms. Mainly my

fault as I had tried to wear too

many hats to do much with

them. So, they either just got

filed or even disappeared. This

even though many of you filled

them out and waited to be called

because you had checked one or

more of the blocks indicating an

interest.

Though not ideal, the form is a

way for members to indicate

where they might be able to con-

tribute to the Chapter.

We’d like to humbly apologize

for our negligence, and respect-

fully ask you to fill out the form

once more and get it to me one

way or another. I promise to get

them to BoD members.

It is on the back side of this

page. Thanks much.
