The Scuttlebutt The Newsletter of the Korean War and Service Veterans of Lake County (FL), Inc., Chapter 169, Chartered 1998 www.cid169.kwva.org P.O. Box 491428, Leesburg, FL 34749-1428
Vol. 17. No 09 September 2014
W e were most honored to
have Congressman Dan
Webster visit the Chapter and
make a presentation at our Sep-
tember Member Meeting.
Congressman Webster shared an
update on the VA and the current
situation with ISIS. He also
brought us up to date on the status
of VA Hospitals effort by Congress.
He also provided a status report on
H.R. 318 and H.R. 2794. The for-
mer needs a new sponsor while
2794 is proceeding through the
House. He stated he is a sponsor of
both.
Perhaps most importantly he
talked about his Constituent
Services wherein he offers his
assistance to constituents of
his 10th District on a wide
variety of needs, especially
with the Federal Government.
His Constituent Services Guide is
reproduced on Pages 5 and 6 here-
in. A group photo of most of those
in attendance with Congressman
Webster is below. Photos by Becker

I t always amazes me
that once July is
over, the rest of the
year just buzzes by.
Just think, we are al-
ready getting set for our
Christmas Luncheon at
the Mission Inn, La
Hacienda Restaurant,
FRIDAY, DECEMBER
19th, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Frank Keaser is collecting funds and issuing tickets.
Cost per person is $18.00.
I have been personally assured that we will not have
the snafu we experienced last year. Ken Vandernorth
will be our Disc Jockey. He has promised “sing along”
songs for all to enjoy.
There will be no Membership Meeting in December
due to the Christmas Party.
This leaves October 22nd and November 19th (to
avoid conflict with Thanksgiving) for Member Meet-
ings.
The November meeting will include election of Offic-
ers to serve in 2015-16.
The effort continues to find and attract younger Kore-
an Defense Veterans to join our Chapter 169. This is
why Art Iversen has set up a meeting in conjunction
with Harold Sievers and Art Canale to be held at 2:00
p.m., Saturday, October 18th in the Eisenhower Cen-
ter located in The Villages (see Art’s article next
page).
It is our sincere hope to find new and younger Village
member Veterans to join even if it means two mem-
ber meetings per month (one on the usual 4th
Wednesday at the Senior Center, the other at the Ei-
senhower Center each 3rd Saturday). We don’t know
the outcome, but thanks to Art for his effort.
No question about it, our September 24th meeting
was very interesting as Representative Daniel Web-
ster’s speech was very in tune with events in the Mid-
dle East. He also brought us up to date on the status
of VA Hospitals effort by Congress.
You can be proud of Chapter 169. To date we have
collected $16500 and donated $11,000 to schools,
“SOS”, and “honor Flights”. We have conducted 15
“Tell America” and 25 “Color Guard” events.
We held a successful “61st Armistice” Celebration and
participated in two baseball games between the South
Korean University Baseball Confederation and the
Florida Collegiate Summer League.
The above represents only examples of the many ac-
tivities and doesn’t mention the “Walkathon” or the
many days of successful “Fund Drives.” To be sure,
we have a very active group of people who volunteer
their time and effort.

President’s Column by Wally Jones
Call for Members to Serve as Officers and Directors:
T his is the first call for members to serve your chapter as an officer (elected) or director. The Nominating
Committee is seeking members to serve in all positions (see Officer and Director table on page 11). Elec-
tion will be at our November Member Meeting. Your Chapter needs you so give it a shot. Please let either
Don Van Beck* or Art Iversen* know if you are willing to serve. Returns on your efforts will be beyond
belief; I speak from personal experience. Tom Thiel. * also see Page 11 for their phone and email addresses.

W e need new members to sur-
vive as an organization. Ko-rean Service Veterans provide a ma-
jor hope for KWVA.
Here is something the Chapter is ini-
tiating to address this opportunity.
I invite you to come to the Eisenhow-
er Recreation Center, in The Villages
on October 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
This is the monthly meeting of Kore-
an Veterans started by Harold Siev-ers and Art Canale who are members
and former presidents of our Chap-ter.
They know that there are a lot of vet-erans who served in Korea living in
the Villages, and have been holding
these meetings just for the fellowship of Korean Veterans.. Most of them
are still working and cannot attend our meetings.
I have talked with Harold and Art, as well as officials in the Villages about
our members being able to meet at
the Eisenhower Center, and all agree that this could be a place where we
might pick up new and younger members.
The Chapter 169 Color Guard will present the Colors, and we will do a
MIA/POW presentation.
If this works we will continue to meet
every third Saturday of the month at
the Eisenhower Center. This would be in addition to our meeting on the
forth Wednesday at the Senior Cen-ter. We will try to get them to join
our chapter and help us with our var-ious projects and fund raising. We
will hold regular meetings just like
we do in Leesburg.
It would be great if we could get as
many of our regular members to be there in their Chapter Shirts at this
first meeting on Saturday, October 18.
The Eisenhower Center is located on Buena Vista Blvd, and just north of
44 (close to the Brownwood Shop-ping Center). You do not
need to reside in The Vil-
lages to attend.
The Center has a real at-
traction of Military arti-facts, and has been draw-
ing lots of visitors.
If you can, either come ear-
ly or stay after our meeting and look around, you will
be impressed.
Art Iversen
Ed Note: As we engage on
this most laudable new ef-fort, we need to always
keep in mind that our mis-sion statement says we are

ty!

former Chairman of The Leesburg Neighborhood Girl
Scouts; Co-Leader of Girl Scout Troop No. 15; Eustis
No.8087 V.F.W. Auxiliary and Past President of the

husband of 63 years, Theodore S. “Ted” Jansen,
Leesburg; daughter, Rita Clymer (Woody), Ocala;
son, Kurt T Jansen, Sanford; seven grandchildren,

Indiana to Roy and Imogene (Davis) Skeen. She was
preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents,
aunts and uncles, a brother, Michael Skeen (whom
she raised), and a granddaughter, Amber Brooke. She
married Jackie Dean Reynolds on November 26, 1953
at Bedford, IN. She is survived by her husband, Jackie
Dean Reynolds of Leesburg, FL; daughter, Jan Gless-
ner and husband Brad of Eustis, FL; son Jeffrey
Reynolds of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 3 grandchildren. She

W e were busy in Sep-
tember.
On Sept 11 (Remembrance
Day) Art Iversen placed our
Chapter Colors at Station 44
in The Villages.
On Sept 19, I posted our
Chapter Flag at The Village
Mem Park for POW/MIA.
Then on Sept 27, we held a
flag ceremony at the
Bayview Center in Eustis.
This is the fourth time we
have been there and the
crowd was great. We were
met by M/Sgt Young of the
Eustis High School ROTC
with about 25 of his cadets.
They had a yard sale and
entertainment and a petting
zoo. It was attended by Al
Schuetz, Frank Keaser, Gor-
don Talbot, Bill Shumaker,
Carol Becker and myself.
Gene Zender couldn't find
the place and went home
before he ran out of gas.
Carol Becker donated about
25 quilts and pillows to the
Vets who stay there. See the
three photos at right.
As you all know, we also had
two funerals that we attend-
ed.
So far, we have nothing for
the month of October, but
that could change.

Fall Council meeting was
held September 20 at Merit Is-land Veterans Memorial Park.
Art Iversen, Carol Becker, Joel
Briggs and President Wally Jones, represented us (see pho-

most interesting items:
The 2015 DoF Convention will
be May 16, 2015 (I believe it will be in Orange Park at the VFW
hall where Chapter 189 meets,
ED)
The number of DoF meet-
ings has been reduced to just two, and the Conven-
tion from two days to one
(the latter so moved by Car-ol Becker at the 2014 annual
member meeting).
The 2015 Fall Council meet-ing will be on October 25,
2015.
Chapters were asked to if they were bona fide 501C19
Veterans Non-Profit (Chapter 169 is so certified,
but it needs to be brought
up to date).
There was a roundtable dis-cussion of ways to attract
KDV veterans.
It was mentioned that Tom Thiel was missed due to his resignation as Secretary,
Webmaster, Editor, and
Historian.

Why you should wear your CID169 golf shirt!
I decided to stop at my local AT&T cell
phone store as I returned from the last
Member Meeting. A nice Hispanic man
greeted me warmly and we discussed the
phones he had available.
Mid-way in our session, he looked at my
shirt and asked if I was receiving their 15%
veterans discount on my monthly bill. I
wasn’t aware that AT&T offered a Veter-
ans Discount.
He next asked “Did you have a Veterans
Card?” I told him I didn’t have one.
“Never mind” he said, “I will take care of
it.” His only proof was the emblem on my
chapter shirt!
I just looked at my account online and in-
deed it now says I am receiving the 15%
discount! My annual savings will be more
than enough for me to get the new Sam-
sung Note 6 phablet when it is available
on October 17!
Any guess which sales person I will look
for then?

Minutes, September 24 2014 Member Meeting
Page 15
Vol. 17. No 09 September 2014 The Scuttlebutt
We got good coverage in the Daily Commercial prior to the events
leading to more than a dozen
phone and email contacts. Some
said they still worked and therefore could not come to daytime meet-
ings. However, the net result of all
this effort was zero, nada, no new
KSV members. We did however add Yong Kouh to the CID169
membership roster.
Art Iversen reported that he has
arranged for the chapter to extend itself to The Villages, more specifi-
cally to the Eisenhower Recreation
Center, October 18, 2014, at 2 p.m.
Chapter Members Harold Sievers and Art Canale have been hosting
monthly meetings at the Center,
and have agreed to Chapter 169
initiating a second monthly meet-ing in association with their meet-
ings. Our Chapter 169 Color Guard
will present the Colors, and we will
do a MIA/POW presentation. Siev-ers and Canale state that they knew
there were a lot of veterans who
served in Korea who live in the Vil-
lages. They just meet for the fel-lowship of Korean Veterans. Most
of them are still working and can-
not attend our meetings. This
could be a place where we might pick up members. If it works we
will meet every month there on
their meeting date (the
third Saturday) in addition to our current meeting on the forth
Wednesday and try to get them to
join our chapter and help us with
our various projects and fund rais-
ing. We will hold regular meetings
just like we do in Leesburg. It would be great if we could get
many of our members to be there
in their Chapter Shirts. The Eisen-
hower Center is located on Buena Vista Blvd, and just north of 44
(close to the Brownwood Shopping
Center). You do not need to be a
Villager to attend. The Center is a real attraction of Military artifacts
and has been drawing lots of visi-
tors. If you can, either come early
or stay after our meeting and look around, you will be impressed. In
doing this we need always to re-
member that our Charter is for all
of Lake County (and surrounding areas).
