Program

Rotary Moment

Blake highlighted our Rotary Foundation as being, if not number 1 in all Charity rating organizations, the Foundation is in the top 3 of all such organizations. Charity Watch reports that TRF’s Program Percentage is 92%, which means that Administrative costs are only 8%. They report that it costs the Foundation only $6 to raise each $100 donation. Charity Navigator another charity evaluator gives TRF an overall score of 97.87% Rating with a 100% rating for Accountability and Transparency. Blake’s message was that there is no better place to place your charity dollars than the Rotary Foundation

Both Gary and Petra have extensive paramedic experience. Gary has 35 years of extensive paramedic experience in Alberta including being Acting Superintendent of Staffing, Operations, and Communications for the province. Petra worked for 5 years as a paramedic in the City of Calgary before accepting a position as the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Emergency Services. So both came to us this morning very well qualified to talk to us about Cardiac function and emergency intervention strategies.

Announcements

We need to be familiar with the symptoms associated with cardiac malfunction and to have taken some training associated with intervention, namely administering CPR and being familiar with the use of a defibulator. Gary and Petra offer classes. Check out the Island Safety Training website www.islandsafetytraining.com for available classes. Also it would be prudent if we investigated installing/locating a Defibulator here at Rotary House.

Since 1985 Rotary International and Rotarians have been dedicated to, and have been contributing dollars toward the eradication of Polio worldwide. The disease is tenacious and as well there are cultural issues that have had to be addressed but now only 3 countries remain endemic; we are very close to achieving our goal. We thank our Speakers by contributing to PolioPlus, our donation will immunized 30 children against the ravages of this crippling disease.

Thank You Gary and Petra

President Stuart displayed a Christmas card prepared by children from BLT, a thank you for the things we do to support BLT.

Welcome Back Shurl!

Still hobbling a bit but nonetheless it was good to see Shurl back this morning. President Stuart acknowledged the 10 years of service Steve and Shurl have provided our club. It was December 2006 when they served up their first breakfast to Sunrise Rotarians. Jim Lynch was our President and it was Jim who did the work to convince Shurl that the Rotary Club of QB Sunrise was a pretty good place to be early every Tuesday morning.

“I went to the doctor and he said I had acute appendicitis, and I said, compared to who? - Jay London
