From Your
Hello E-2
As we are planning trips for the warmer
months, I am reminded that not all states have the same rules
governing motorcyclist helmet usage. If a ride crosses into a
different state, then obviously that state’s laws apply. At this
point, let’s be clear. GWRRA recommends the use of a DOT
approved helmet for all riders/co-riders when riding a
motorcycle. Every ride, every time.
In Ohio, riders under the age of 18 years with a learner's permit
or with less than one year of experience after obtaining their
motorcycle endorsement (novice) are required to wear a
DOTapproved helmet.
In Indiana, all riders under the age of 18 years are required to
wear a DOT approved helmet.
In Kentucky and Pennsylvania, all riders under the age of 21
years are required to wear a helmet.
In West Virginia and Tennessee, all riders (of all ages!) are
required to wear helmets.

Promoting Safe Riding
Your visibility to other drivers. As we are now starting the riding season so to speak. How visible are you to other drivers? Are all your lights working on your bike ? Do you use your high beam during the day to give better visibility ? Are you wearing reflective clothing or at least have reflective stripes ? Make the other driver alert to your intentions, such as always using your turn signals. Make sure the people around you know what you are doing. This also includes other riders in your group. Don’t be afraid to use your horn to alert drivers to your location or to wake them up. Drivers today maybe using a cell phone and are not giving the road ahead 100 % of their attention. Think about where you are positioning yourself on the rode. Are you using the entire part of your lane to be better seen ? If you are following to close to a truck ahead of you, the truck driver may not see you. A driver on a side street waiting to make a turn as the truck you are following passes, may also not see you. Remember being seen is your job, don’t expect other drivers to be looking for motorcycles. Remember the Goldwing is a quiet bike, not like a Harley. So you being visible is the name of the game. Ride Safe and Ride Often
