The students and teachers all deserve a rest for two weeks and prepare themselves for a frenetic 8 weeks for the last term of the 2012 school year!

Our Junior School department has expanded to the point that a new Year 1 class has to be started next term. Consequently, the classroom used by the Year 13 students, Room 18, as their common room has been turned back to a classroom. The teacher position has been advertised nation-wide and we are pleased to inform you that an excellent teacher has been found to teach the class. Mrs Debbie Smith is a very qualified and experienced teacher and has taught at Westminster Christian School. She has recently been in Samoa with her husband Dennis, helping with the tsunami recovery operation. Debbie has worked extensively with gifted children and is very involved with online and e-learning strategies and practices.

We have two trainee teachers arriving in our school next term. Mr Javan Shields (left) is an American currently undertaking a degree in teaching at the Indiana Wesleyan University specialising in Music. Javan will arrive in New Zealand towards the end of the holidays and will spend 7 weeks in our school. He will largely be working with our music specialist Mrs Sarah Rauch, teaching music to our Year 1 to year 10 students. We also welcome Miss Tracey Marshall (right) to our school for 7 weeks next term. Tracey is studying for her Bachelor of Education degree at Laidlaw College and is in her last year of study. She will be

working with Mrs Sellar in our Year 2 class. Tracey is an ex-Hebron student and is the daughter of our Board Chairman, Colin Marshall and Lorraine, our assistant School Secretary.

Hebron Happenings Working Bee

We had a small number of mums and dads come to our Working Bee last Saturday but those who did come accomplished great things. The ladies worked on the Rahiri House garden and it is now weed-free and looking very tidy and attractive. The men cut down all the shrubs and weedy trees that had grown up along the New North Rd and McLeans St perimeter fence. One chainsaw soon wore out and Mrs Aso went off and hired two more which were well utilised and quickly cleared the boundary. So “thanks” to all the families that came and special thanks to Mrs Welch for providing the morning tea. Shakeout on Wednesday This Wednesday, Hebron Christian College staff and students joined over 1 million other New Zealanders in the world’s first ShakeOut, an earthquake drill practised at the same time. Children, and teachers, at the sound of the earthquake bell, dropped to the ground, covered themselves under furniture or with hands, and held tight! We also used the opportunity to pray for victims of earthquakes around the world but especial for our own countrymen and women in Christchurch, many who are still suffering the effects of their earthquakes. Modern Gladiators – the battle is on! The Year 10’s are currently tackling a Level 1 NCEA Classics internal in Social Studies entitled Modern Gladiators. The challenge is to research and prepare a presentation on the similarities and differences between the Ancient Roman Coliseum and modern day Eden Park by comparing the: venues, activities pursued and spectator experiences.

On Wednesday Coach Pat Lam joined the class and spoke on being a modern gladiator. Something, as a former All Black and captain of Samoa with three World Cup appearances behind him, he is very qualified to do. He spoke eloquently on the disciplines an athlete from any period of time needed to employ to be successful and went on to highlight the incredible impact of the birth of the modern professional sportsperson. Many valuable insights and anecdotes were shared, including

the dedicated prayer activities of our senior Christian rugby players before they take to the field. Stressing the importance of mental discipline, confidence and team work he left the class with a memorable quote to take into life, “Information and Inspiration without Perspiration leaves you with Frustration”. This talk was a perfect introduction to our tour of Eden Park itself the next day. This was a marvellous opportunity to see for ourselves the functioning of this amazing stadium from the inside out. Our informative tour guide took us on a remarkable journey through the complex logistical labyrinth that is the Park describing how a former swamp was turned into world class stadium. Fascinating

facts and figures flowed from: the enviro-friendly design to the 1 000 caterers who operate in the second biggest kitchen in NZ during a Bledisloe Cup game to the mind blowing $500 000 charge for a corporate super suite for 11 games during the Rugby World Cup 2011. In the coaches box we could visualise the alternate hair pulling and jumps for joy while in the changing room we learnt about the idiosyncrasies and superstitions of current All Blacks. As experience piled upon experience the pupils’ comments flowed. “Loved it. So excited. Got to sit in Sonny Bill’s locker!” “Being on the field, awesome walking in players footsteps”. Dare we hope these twin enlightening events will produce a crop of Excellences?

The Esther – Star of Persia DVD has now been produced and orders are now being taken. Cost $15. Let the office know how many copies you want and how you will pay (cash or invoice) and the DVD will be distributed to you once the orders have been tallied. Operation Christmas Child Hebron Christian College will, once again, be participating in the annual Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” Shoebox appeal. A brochure has been given to every child in the school explaining the appeal and providing information on how to fill their shoe box, the money needed to help freight the boxes to Cambodia, etc. We plan to have the Operation Christmas Child “Handover” of shoe boxes on the first Friday back in school…19th October at lunchtime. If your child cannot obtain an empty shoebox for their gifts, kitset shoeboxes will be available at school in the first week of the term.

To Rent The school house is available for rent. It has 4 large bedrooms with built in wardrobes, a lounge, a kitchen/dining room and a bathroom/toilet/ laundry. It comes with a swimming pool, tennis court, spacious grounds and is very close to a top Christian school! Contact me for more information if interested. Dear Parents…with only 4 weeks to go we have a huge amount of work to achieve for the gala and a lot of it has to happen in the weeks before or we will have nothing to sell. We also need people who will take up task like advertising and purchasing from Gilmours and getting donations in. Please…if you have free time in the next 6 weeks we need you to put your hand up for these jobs and come to our Thursday night meetings in the school staffroom from 7:15 to 8:15 every week.
