March 2014 The ECHO 1

A big hello to you all,

As Rio's Carnival, the greatest show on earth,

comes to an end and you are packing away your

feathers, don't despair! You may need a rest but

the fun is not over! Summer is still in full bloom

and we have a full calendar of events to brighten

your spirits!

THIS MONTH

The always bubbly Vanete Barr is opening her

new home for our Zona Sul Cafezinho, on Friday,

the 14 of March.

Jackie Stern will be escorting Art and Architecture

buffs to the new MAR museum downtown on Fri-

day, the 21st of March.

Our very talented Marla Rathbun, who is a profes-

sional violinist will, for the first time, be playing

for the InC. The recital and Happy Hour cocktails

will be at Marsia Seydow's lovely home

in Ipanema on Friday, the 28th.

An Angra day trip on Saturday, the 22nd of

March will introduce you to the best place to snor-

kel and picnic and a totally deserted beach para-

dise but on the way we will pass the number one

spot where the South American jet set meets

at Praia do Dentista. We have a new restaurant

that has gladly joined the InC in giving us a great

discount and a donation to our funds.

Our General Meeting will be in Barra this month at

the fabulous home of Petra Verhouven. We will be

announcing ourspeaker shortly, and we hope to

see you there.

IN CLOSING FEBRUARY.....

A special thanks to Christine de Freitas for hosting

a super General Meeting and to our guest speak-

er, Ian “McRobbo” Robertson. The weather was

perfect, the view stunning and Ian answered all

the scary questions about the progress of the

World Cup with great humor. Our new spon-

sor Edward Laan provided some excellent food

and we had lots of new members attending.

Check the photos on our Facebook page. Once

again Victor Harrison did a beautiful job of captur-

ing the fun moments.

Charming and gracious Marina Torchio and our

"Guardian Angel" Dra. Monica Wolff provided an

unforgettable Cafezinho. Nutrition was the subject

of the day and Monica put many a mind at ease

by explaining everything we needed to know

about food and water safety in the tropics. Many

thanks! (See pictures)

We sadly had to say goodbye to Helen and Bill

Robertson but we did it in great style at

both Susan Loveland's and Jane Wood's homes,

as they hosted a royal send off.

Tina Wagner has left the board as our Treasurer

and Ed Laan will temporarily be taking over that

position. Our dedicated volunteers are the ones

who have kept the InC running since 1965 and I

would like to take a moment to say thank you

to Tina for so graciously giving her time this past

year and to Ed for stepping up.

Liliana Perilha Rojas will be leaving us within a

few month to return to Florida. I would like to

thank her, in the name of the InC, for the time

and effort she put in and wish her all the luck in

the world. The position of membership director is

open. If this interests you, plz let me know. It is a

very important job on the Board and needs to be

filled.

Thanks to Robyn Thompson for hosting a Speak-

easy English session for members who so gener-

ously give their time by teaching English to the

underprivileged in the Brazilian community. Spe-

cial thanks to Marian DiNardo, Anna Barbara and

Siobahn Mcquillan for presenting helpful teaching

tips and techniques.

I encourage all of you to join in our activities and

send much gratitude to all our sponsors who have

donated raffle prizes and who have donated part

of their earnings to the InC. Check our treasury

report to see who they are. Should you have a

service that would help our expats, please con-

tact Adiane Mitidiero, our VP who will gladly ex-

plain how you too, can contribute.

It is this spirit of community that brings us to-

gether and makes the

expat experience and

provides all of us with a

better, kinder world.

My best to you all,

Bonnie

We try to finalize the month’s upcoming events for the calendar in the Echo so that you can plan ahead to attend events you are interested in. However, since many of us decide at the last minute, the InC also sends out a flyer a day or two before every event asking for an RSVP. In the case of an event at a private home, this should trigger a response email with the address of the location of the hostess. For an excursion or happy hour at a public place, you won’t necessarily hear back, but an RSVP will give us a heads up on who and how many to expect. If you ever have any doubts, please do not hesitate to call or email someone on the Board. Sometimes it takes some courage to show up for an event where you don’t know anyone, but we promise you will be welcomed: give it a try!

Angra,Angra, A wonderful day trip to Paradise A wonderful day trip to Paradise

Carnival has come and gone, our guests from abroad are

on their way home, time to put your feet up, relax and

get back into a slower, more enjoyable Carioca pace.

Not only has Rio calmed down but also the Costa Verde

of Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande. I think it is fair to say

that paradise is back to normal. The temperature is

cooler, beaches are finally deserted again and the crystal

clear waters of Angra have been returned to the starfish,

the turtles, dolphins and those of us who are passionate

about Ilha Grande, the hundreds of islands and

thousands of white, sandy beaches.

This month our Angra day trip we will take us to:

Ilhas Bottinas. This is the post card picture of Angra and a great place to relax, chat, take lots

of photos and feed the Sargent fish. We will stop there for an hour or two so you can enjoy some

snacks and snorkel to your heart's content.

After having a chance to unwind, we will be heading to Praia do Dentista where the jet setters

play. Gorgeous yachts and beautiful people. Something for everyone.

Then on to a delightfully, deserted beach called Praia do Amendoeira where we will go for a

swim and enjoy a leisurely walk along the beach.

By now you will be ready for a late lunch at the traditional BAR do NENECO on Ilha do

Caieira and a chance to see some of the most colourful

native birds in their natural habitat. Neneco also has a

natural aquarium of exotic fish. The food is excellent and

reasonably priced. They are known for their caipirinhas.

Neneco, the owner has agreed to become an InC sponsor

giving us a 10% discount and a 10% donation to the InC

fund.

We leave Recreio on Saturday morning, the 22nd of March at 8

am and drive to the Verolme Marina where we arrive at 9:45.

That is where we board the speedboat that will take you around

the islands. We will be returning at 5pm.

The price of the trip is R$1500 and will be divided amongst the

number of people signing up. Full capacity is 10 persons.Fully

booked the price per person is R$150.

Transportation to and from the Marina not included. Parking at

the Marina is included. If you would like to share a ride, let me

know. Food and drinks not included.

All donations from sponsors will go to the InC fund.

Speakeasy English Teaching Program Marian Dinardo - Charity Director

The Speakeasy English Program is a major part of the InC

work undertaken with our supported charities. Currently,

there are volunteers from InC supporting projects in various

communities across the city including Cidade de Deus,

Rocinha, and Pavao / Pavaozinho. The program supports the

teaching of English to teenagers and preschoolers and is de-

livered by many volunteers from InC.

On Wednesday 19th February, InC held a teachers workshop

for all the volunteers who taught in the program in 2013.

This workshop was organized by Robyn Thompson. The day

was a tremendous success and volunteers in the program

are now planning follow up discussions and meetings.

Although we have a good number of volunteers currently supporting the Speakeasy

program, due to various circumstances we are very short of people for the Rocinha

classes especially during the month of March. If you have some time and can help

out either in the short or longer term, please get in touch with Robyn. The classes

undertaken by volunteers will recommence in the middle of March.

The members of the Charity Committee are meeting early in April to review the ap-

plications we have received and to decide on the allocation of funds. Currently we

have received applications for funding from most of the organization we supported in

2013 and we have an additional application from a new body. All applications must

be supported by an InC member.

Museu de Arte do Rio - MAR

March 2014 The ECHO 6

The Museu de Arte do Rio (aka MAR) is Rio’s newest art museum. MAR’s dazzling

mix of architectural design styles means that there is plenty to look at before you’ve

even gotten through the doors.

One half of the museum is a modern building featuring white pillars, frosted green

glass and clean lines. The other half is the Palacete Dom João VI, built in 1916 with a

more classic, traditional style. These two main buildings are linked by the wave-like

concrete canopy that is supported by more white pillars.

Meeting 10:30 am at the entrance of the museum

From Jane Austen's time people have attended house concerts to

listen to what was being composed by their peers. Often, music of

Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, to name only three, were not

understood in their own time. In our current environment of

electronic over-stimulation, decibel overload, and visual onslaught,

how does one sort through the classical music being written today and

make sense of it? To discern what might become historically

successful music is a process based upon exposure and guidance from

musicians who spend time studying and performing these pieces. A

"hook" into each work is needed to snare the essence of what can seem

nonsensical. I like to engage the audience in a discussion of how

the pieces are put together and what I believe makes them not only

meaningful but beautiful and fascinating.

Join me for a house concert evening of Brazilian and American

contemporary solo violin music.

Why I like it?

The Pousada Santa Clara was the first pousada I ever knowingly stayed in and I loved it from the moment I saw it. This is not luxury in its normal sense. The 12 suites are comfortable and charming but many don't have air condi-tioning, showers are electric and there are no amenities other than soap. Where the luxury comes is in the loca-tion, 2 minutes from the beach and beachbars, in the silence and tranquility, in the tropical gardens that surround the accommodation, in the amazing restaurant and in the interesting people you meet there. Owned and run by 2 New Yorker brothers, Charles on the management side and Mark as chef, this is the ideal place to chill out and leave the world behind. A real hidden paradise.

Where is it?

Boipeba island lies around a 5 hour journey south of Salvador. The easiest way to get there is by ferry to Itaparica island, bus (2 hours) to Valença, taxi to the port and speedboat (lancha rapida) over to Boipeba. There are no vehi-cles on the island apart from tractors but on arrival you'll be met by boys with wheelbarrows to carry your bags along the sandy tracks. Well worth the money whether you are going to one of the pousadas in Velha Boipeba or going over to Monte Alegre or Moreré by tractor.

When to go?

Bahia is good year round, but June is the rainy season and many pousadas close for refurbishment and annual holidays at that time. I myself also avoid holiday periods like carnival when you get a very different crowd of people. Much better to go low season when prices drop and everything is slower paced.
