SINCE its launch in 2010, the VW Polohatch has consistently been thesecond bestselling passenger car in

South Africa. The new Polo has been enhanced both

visually and technically. The driverassistance and infotainment systems aswell as the new TSI engines and the awardwinning DSG gearbox, have taken the newPolo to another level.

Thanks to these TSI engines, the newPolo’s fuel economy has been improved byas much as 20%.

Visually, the new Polo can be identifiedby a sharper front and rear design. Inaddition, the new model introduces freshcolours, new interior materials and newspecifications.

The new Polo now comes in threeequipment levels: Trendline, Comfortlineand Highline. Customers who want a Polowith rugged but sporty looks can opt forthe CrossPolo.

Assistance systems that are traditionally associated with cars found in uppersegments have found their way into thenew Polo. For example, the Polo is the firstvehicle in its class to include an automaticpostcollision braking system, whichautomatically initiates braking once it hasbeen in an accident, in order to prevent asubsequent collision.

The radio has been upgraded to a

modular infotainment system. Dependingon the equipment level, this includefunctions such as bluetooth connectivityand a proximity sensor.

This sophisticated design of the Polohas now been made even more precise, andthenewlydesignedheadlightsandtaillights have their very own charisma.

The new Polo has been launched with

fuelefficient TSI engines. Initially only thefourcylinder 1.2 TSI engines are available, with power outputs of 66kW and 81kW.

The entrylevel derivative’s TSI enginedelivers an output of 66kW at 4 800rpm.The claimed combined fuel consumptionof this engine is as low as 4.9l/100km.

This engine is mated to a fivespeedmanual transmission, and is available with

the Trendline and Comfortline derivatives. The higher specification model is the 1.2

TSI, which delivers an output of 81kW at5 000rpm, and attains a fuel consumptionvalue of 5.1 l/100km. The 81kW engine isavailable in the Highline derivatives as wellas the CrossPolo.

An extra safety feature, known as theDriver

Alert system, is standard in Highline derivatives. It detects when a driver’s concentration begins to wane, and emits anacoustic sound, while a message appearsin the instrument cluster recommending abreak from driving.

The new Polo comes standard with a3 year/45 000km Service Plan, 3 year/120000km warranty and a 12 year anticorrosion warranty.

Service interval is 15 000km.

The new VW polo boasts sharperlines and greater sophistication.

THABO DLADLA

A problem of identityIT is now history that Spain wasknocked out of the 2014World Cup ingroup stages. Does this make theirphilosophy less relevant or outdated? It would be naïve to think along theselines. In fact it is a sign of ignorance.

All the great football nations havephilosophies that form the foundationof their football. It is not possible to beanother person.

Presently, South African footballhas a problem of identity. We havefailedto recognizethatwearediffer-ent to other nations in many ways.Presently, all thenationsinthistourna-ment play differently, mainly becausethey are different people.

I am sure theway they dance, pray, celebrate, the food they eat, customsand culture etc. is different.

We are probably one of the few na-tions that have tried every other na-

tion’s philosophies. It is easy inSouthAfrica for foreign-

ers to impose their ideas. In fact, thepowers thatbewill giveyouall thesup-port as long as you come fromabroad. We still have a long way to go beforeovercoming the effects of colonialism.

The challenge is to outgrow thestage of information and knowledgeconsumption. We need to begin devel-opingfootballcoachingmaterialbasedon thequalities, culture, strengthsandmentality of SouthAfrican footballers. This requires research, observationand lots of experimenting.

Theyear2014was theendofanerafor the Xavi group in the Spanish na-tional team.

This is a group of players that havewon almost everything in football his-tory. Spanish football remains power-ful because of the foundation laid overthe past 20 years. SouthAfricans needto focus on their challenges and startdoing the right and correct things.

There are no short cuts in life.Unzima Lomthwalo!

A week of qualitycricket

>> The goal is to be selected for the Sunfoil development team

A GROUP of 300 gifted youngcricketers from KZN, Gauteng,Border, Griqualand West and

Western Province have taken to thefields of Hilton College for the 2014Sunfoil Township Tournament, now in its seventh year.

The tournament is akey elementof a successful development pro-gramme run by the Kwazulu-NatalCricketUnion (KZNCU) andWillowtonGroup, manufacturersofSunfoil cook-ingoil,togive disadvantagedyoung-sters the opportunity to competeagainst other quality players in matchconditionstoboost theirskillsandcon-fidence.

The ultimate goal of all players is tobe selected for the elite Sunfoil devel-opment teamwhichwillbeannouncedat the end of the tournament.

“Thisyear’stournamentpromisesahigher standard of play than ever be-fore,” said Linda Zondi, the KZNCU’sTownship Development Manager.

The format remains the same.Twenty-four teams made up of 12

Under-19 and 12Under-15 sides willplay 49 matches, with 20 overs permatch.

“We have introduced some chang-

es.Wewill beplayingon two fields thisyear insteadofone.Wehavealso invit-ed a fourth province fromoutsideKZNtoparticipate.GriqualandWestwill bejoining Gauteng, Border and WesternProvinceinbringingoneUnder-15andoneUnder-19 teameachto the tourna-ment,” said Zondi.

ShoaibMoosa,SalesandMarketingDirector of Willowton Group said thatThe Sunfoil Township Cricket pro-gramme is inspiring young cricketersto develop a love for the sport.

“There is no doubt that we are see-ing an increasing general awarenessof the sport in the townships, alongwith an ever-growing enthusiasm forthe game amongst disadvantagedyoungsters as a result of our develop-ment partnership with the KZNCU,”Moosa said.

Moosa and Zondi believe that theannualSunfoil TownshipTournamenthas been a major factor in thesuccessof the55 township teamsplay-ing in the Durban and District CricketUnion league in the 2013/14 season.

“Weweredelighted tosee fiveof theteams win their league.

Ourkidsarescoringrunsandtakingwickets. Now, when they play league

games, they play to win. Before, theywent out to play with the attitude thatthey would be beaten,” said Zondi.

Two of the township players havealso been accepted into the SuncoastCricket Academywhich is the trainingground for the Dolphins B team.

Therearesixtownshipboysattend-ingGlenwoodPreponSchool financialassistanceandanothertenwhoarebe-ing educated at other respectedschools with KZN, the assistance ofsponsors like Super Sport and otherfamilies within these schools haveplayed a major role in this regard.

“It is also rewarding to see that fourtownship girls were chosen to repre-sent KZN Provincial Under-19 teamlast year,” Zondi said.

Apart from the 300 players takingpart in the Sunfoil Township Tourna-ment, there is a working committee ofalmost 150 people who score andcoach, selectors, umpires all of whomwillbestayingatHiltonCollege’sworldclass facilities this week.

The tournament is an excellent op-portunity for players to gain matchawareness and enhance their per-formance but it also gives coaches theopportunity to improve their skills,Zondi believes.

IT’S official. Maritzburg United ishere to stay.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlelasaidthatthelocalfootballclubwillnotleave the Harry Gwala Stadium andthe city for Port Elizabeth as its homebase.

Although he did not have the fig-ures onhim,Ndlela said that the dealisbetter than the three-yearsponsor-ship of R36 million which had beenputonthe tableby theNelsonMande-la Bay Municipality.

Ndlela said that there are anumber of stakeholders involved inthe new deal.

He also added that MaritzburgUnited’s presence in the city is goodfor local football enthusiasts whowant topursueacareer in the footballworld.

Ndlela said that theMsunduziMu-nicipality will be the guarantor forMaritzburgUnited’s annual sponsor-ship, and said that they are aiming toget the sponsorship from various

stakeholders“Maritzburg United’s presence is

good for Pietermaritzburg. Theyoungsters begin to aspire to be pro-

fessional football players becausetheywatchprofessionalfootballweekin andweek out. Also, sport fans taketimetowatchfootball.Theofferisbet-

ter thanwhatwasbeingoffered intheEastern Cape. But obviouslywe haveput other conditions which will seethecityandthepeopleof theprovince

as well as the people of the district ofuMgungundlovuderivingsomebene-fits out of it,” said Ndlela.

The sponsorship is reportedlyworth R12 million a year.

“Coming in as a guarantor, we aremindful that if we don’t succeed inraisingwhatwehaveguaranteed, wewill foot thebill as the council. Butwebelieve it isworthdoing that in the in-terestof thecitizensof thecity.Wearehoping thatwewill get the guaranteewe have made to them from the pri-vatesector. Ifwedon’t, fullcouncilen-dorsed that we serve as the guaran-tor,” said Ndlela.

Maritzburg United’s marketingand communicationsmanager BrianZuma also released a media state-ment confirming the news.

“The chairman and the boardwere appreciative of the gesture bythe Nelson Mandela Bay Metropoli-tan Municipality for a very good andtempting offer they had made to theclub, but believed that remaining inPietermaritzburg was the more rea-sonable option in the long run,” hestated.

New players forMaritzburg UnitedJERRY BARNES

MARITZBURG United is likely to be dominated bynew faces after exodus of players. An encouragingthought however is that the Team of Choice management and its technical bench is working hardto form an all round balance in the side.

At the end of last season contracts of ageingDelron Buckley, Pieter Petersen, Dillon Sheppardand Robyn Johannes were offloaded. While theformer Orlando Pirates star left back Ruben Cloetefollowed his former coach Ernst Middendorp at Bloemfontein Celtic. Hard working midfield anchorand former Bidvest Michael Morton returned toGauteng when he joined SuperSport United andmidfielder and Soweto born Bongolethu Jayiyawent back to Wits after a loan spell in Pietermaritzburg. The latest crew to exit to Gauteng is United’sdefence backbone Rheece Evans and MarioBooysen who joined the tycoons of South Africansoccer Mamelodi Sundowns.

The departure of so many players may look crazy or impossible for United’s head coach SteveKomphela to start his campaign on the positivenote, but the situation is under control and somechanges were overdue. Financial challenges andlack of major sponsor were some of the reasonsthat change was needed.

TheTeamofChoicemanagementcannotaffordunreasonable high paid players or players thatspend the majority of their season in the sick bay.

ThegoodnewsisthatAbelMabaso(rightback),Rodney Ramagalela (striker) and Kwanda Mngonyana (centre back) are expected to come on boardfrom Sundowns.

Zulu general manager Peter O’Connor says the clubare still on the lookout for players in two positionsas they prepare to step up their preseason trainingthis week, their second one back following the offseason. Usuthu made a lowkey return to their People’s Park training base last week with some of theirnew signings like Sadate OuroAkoriko, who signed

“There is talks between the two teams,“said Kadodia. The local team is also reported to be looking at other options in the market.
