‘We just love
SOUTHAFRICA’>> Two American students visited South Africa and wereimpressed with the beauty of the country and the waythe election process is held
SOUTHAFRICA isabeautiful and interest-ing country, with good people.
Life inSA,andespecially its politics,is unique and has a lot of history behind it.
TheseweretheviewsoftwoUSAhighschoolpupils, Grace Day and Skye Matula (both 16years old) who are currently on a pupil ex-change programme and scholarshipbetween their country and South Africa.
TheyarebothattendingschoolatWykehamCollegiate and are in Grade 11.
“Wecameover lastyearOctoberandween-joyed it from day one. We will be leaving inJune,” said both Day and Matula.
Day is fromOklahomawhileMatula is fromWisconsin.
Of the two,Dayseemstobeoutspoken,openminded and relaxed.
“I likepoliticsandaminterested instudyingjournalism after high school,” she said.
Skye looks naturally shy and hardly talks. Is she missing home already?
“No, not at all, I like it verymuch here. Thisis agreat countryandagood learningcurve forus,” she said.
They are also very quick to point out thatthey respect SA and did not expect to see lionsfreely walking on the streets.
“Whatwas said by some tourists before the2010WorldCupwasnoton.This country isnotjust civilised but also developing fast on otherlevels. It’s going far and you can imagine how
it will achieve in five years to come. I am im-pressed with everything around here,” saidDay.
They also both agreed that SA schools area bit different to theirs.
“Our whole high school education in gov-ernmentschoolsistotallyfree,buttheuniversi-ties are very expensive compares to SA’s,” theyboth concurred.
They also claim uniforms are strange tothembecauseintheircountry, theywearcasualclothes to school. There is also something newabout SA politics compared to the USA.
“Theway you guys campaign is totally outof thisworldandnewtous.Whenwecampaignin theUSA, it ismainly about public debates orpolitical parties phoning people to vote forthem. It was my first time seeing a politicalparty performing a door to door campaign,”said Day.
Theyalsoobserved that inSA, therearea lotofpoliticalparties comparedtotheUSAwherethere are only two main or popular ones - theRepublicans and Democrats.
Day and Matula also had a chance to visitthe local warehouse of the Gift of The Givers.
AccordingtoSallimSayed,GiftofTheGiverschief operations manager, the two pupils“wanted tounderstandabitmoreabout theor-ganisation and its charity work.”

Water cut-offsleave residentsdesperate>> Life is hard for the community of Hanniville as water cutoffs are the order of the day
NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]
HANIVILLE residents are experiencingwater and electricity cut-offs daily, andthey have described it as unbearable.
Speaking to Echo, Musa Sithole said watercut-offs have become the order of the day, leav-ing residentswithoutwater supply forhoursonend.
Sithole said thepeoplewhoare really affect-edare residents residingat the low-cost housesin the area. Copesville primary school in thearea is also feeling the pinch, as pupils have toleaveschool earlydue towater supply interrup-tions.
A source at the school confirmed that theyare affected by the fluctuating water supply, adding that they experience about ten watercut-offs a month.
“That causes a major inconvenience to the
school and the plans for the day. Pupils have toleave the school premises,” he said.
“There is a new water reservoir tank thathas been installed and we suspect that peoplemight be stealing water from it. When ithappens, pupils haveno choicebut to gohomeand come back when the water is available.
“We are sometimes forced to cut the timetable for the lessons so that we can try to havesomelessonsbeforeithappens. It isaworryingissue and we don’t know how long it will keepon happening,” said the source.
Sithole said they have raised the issuewiththeir ward councillor Thandi Ndlovu, butnothing has happened.
“Since last yearwe have been complainingabout the same thing. It has become a normalissuethatwelivewiththroughtheday, nowaterand sometimes no electricity.
“The water cut offs happen in the morningupuntiltheearlyhoursofthenextmorning. This
isnotthelifewedeserveasresidentsofthisarea.Could theward councillor intervene in themat-ter and offer help in any way possible?” saidSithole.
Obviouslyannoyed,Ndlovu told thereporterto ask the Msunduzi municipality what wascausing the cut-offs before hanging up thephone.

Change isneeded
THE more things change, the morethey remain the same. It is hard tounderstandthethinkingofSafalead-ership. There is nowhere in theworldwhereseniorclubsfightingforpromotion have to abide by agerestriction rules.
The under-21 rule in both thethird and second divisions is non-sense. These clubs are fighting forpromotion and also compete withPSL clubs in cup competitions.
We have spoken about this in thepast that senior football leaguesshould not be confused with youthleagues. PSL and first division clubsshould provide elite U17, U19 andU21 leagues. You cannotmix apples
and potatoes. Are we not learning from the
EuropeanandSouthAmerican foot-ball associations? How do clubs atlower levels achieve promotion iftheyareaskedtobefootballschools?Who will be reaping the benefits oftheir work and sacrifices?
I doubt if local football associa-tionsare inaposition toputupprop-er junior and youth structures.
Sometimesonehearspeopletalk-
ing about school football as a solu-tion. Unfortunately, there are noshortcuts in international sports.
Development ismore about trainingthan competition.
People that are naïve think thatcompetitions will produce players. The opposite is true. Where are thefootballersfromSasfacompetitions?I am sure our country is a leader interms of school football competi-tions.
The reality is that competitionsmay teach you cheating more thanpropertechnical-tacticalskills.Pres-ently, it isonlyprofessionalclubsanda few academies that can train andproduce intelligent footballers.
Thesoonerwestop thisnonsenseofconfusingyouthdevelopmentwithpromotional leagues, the better for
the futureof football. It is in the inter-estofprofessionalclubstotraintheiremployees i.e. footballers.
Lastly,IseethenationalU17teamis dominated by Kaizer Chiefs,Bidvest University and MamelodiSundowns players.
There is only one player fromKZN.WhereareAjaxCapeTownandSantos youth players?
This looks more like a Gautengunder-17 team.Unzima lomthwalo!
