Cleaning up PMBNICOLE JOHN

ACLEANUPoperationtorid thecityof its filthhasbeentaken up by many businesses, organizations andindividuals in Pietermaritzburg and will be their

commitment on Friday, 18 July as their 67 minutes forMandela Day.

The cleanupwas initiated by theMsunduziMunicipalityas their effort to help clean the streets in Pietermaritzburgand remain committed toMayor ChrisNdlela’s ‘State of theCity Address’ held recently.

Atarecentbusinessbreakfasthostedbythemunicipality, deputy director general of the department ofenvironmental affairs, Mark Gordon, said that

Pietermaritzburghadbeendeclaredoneof thedirtiest cities by Cabinet a few weeks ago.

Gordon said that as a part of an initiative toclean up the country as a whole, thedepartmenthave targeted cities in the countryto clean it up.

“It [Pietermaritzburg] is certainly dirtierthan some other cities. The face ofPietermaritzburg has deteriorated over theyears. What was once a beautiful, clean city isnow riddledwith filth at almost every corner,”he said.

Hesaidthat thedepartment isworkingwithPietermaritzburg on several interventions, including finalizing their Integrated WasteManagement Plan and some recyclinginitiatives in the district.

Gordon said that the department waspromotingacleanupacrossthecountryaspartof the 67 minutes campaign.

“Wewant toaddress the issuesofwasteandweare calling on all leaders to take up the taskat hand and help get their cities clean.”

While the Mandela Day cleanup that manybusinesses have latched on to is a step in theright direction, Gordon said that a moresustainable plan needs to be put in place inevery city.

Ndlela emphasized that the people of thecity need to take ownership of the space thatthey occupy, whether it is the area in front ofyour driveway at home or your businessbackyard.

He further urged people to work togetherwith the municipality to keep the city clean.

“We know that the 67minutes campaign isnot enough, but it is a start,” he said.

Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Businessdirector,MelanieVeness, saidthatshebelievesthat it is time forpeople to invest in thecityandwork together.

“We [PCB] are determined to work inpartnershipwiththemunicipalitytogetPieter-maritzburgtothestatethatacapitalcityshouldbe in.We don’t want to be on the sidelines, wewant to make a difference,” said Veness.

Gordon said that if residents want tocontribute to keeping the city clean, theyshould get involved in a local initiative in theirward, school, community, business or mall.“Businesses must be proactive and moreresponsible. We have asked the city to bevigilant with enforcement and compliancemonitoring, there appears to be someapathy and complacency from variousstakeholders.”

SEEING how people living with hearingdisabilities were treated, especiallyamongstblackcommunities, encouraged

theKwaMaphumulo born 33-year-old to enrolin a Bachelor of Communications in pathologydegree, specializing in audiology and speechtherapy.

Herdailyduties includeconductinghearingtests, fitting hearing aids and cleaning wax.

“The ear has a vital function, yet it is oftenthemost neglected organof the body. Our busylifestylesexposeustoalotofnoisewhichmakesus vulnerable to hearing problems.

“In every family, there is at least one personwith a hearing problem, and that is whyeveryoneshouldgo foracheck-upat least onceayear,asageandhereditarycanbecontributo-ry. As a result of this, I believe it is importantfor everyone to learn the basics of signlanguage,” she said.

Mkhize added that she would encouragecompanies to send those employees who areexposed to loud noises for tests every sixmonths.

“Theproblem is still common, mostly in ourblack communities, where someprofessionals

do not understand what audiology is about. There are cases where deafness could havebeen avoided if it was detected earlier, butbecause we are not exposed to such informa-tion we delay it until later.

“Early identification allows earlyintervention.”

Currently,Mkhize isworkingwith localdeaforganizations and special schools inconducting hearing tests.

“In some cases, you find that a child iscontinuously failing and is treated as a specialcase, when the only problem is their hearingability. Thereare somany risk factors that leadto the loss of hearing. I would encouragemorechildren to consider the field and I am evenprepared to mentor them,” she said.

Her biggest dream is to see those inrural areas accessing such services as equallyas their urban counterparts. In the next fiveyears, Mkhize hopes to have impacted on thewhole country throughpublic awareness cam-paigns.

AUDIO book players known as Victor Readersweredistributedto29visually impairedpeoplein Pietermaritzburg to help thembetter accessinformation.

The move is part of ongoing efforts by theKwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts andCulture toassist theprovince’sblindcommuni-ty.

There has been R1 million set aside for themini-librariesprojectwhichaims topromoteacultureofreadingamongthevisuallyimpaired.

Content is preloaded for the users andlibrarians monitor them every three months. The devices are portable and work like acellphone, using headphones to feedback theaudio. The information has been collected andconverted by tertiary students assisting theprogramme.

Beneficiaries of the project are selectedthrough research conducted by The NationalBlind Society and district municipalities, inconjunction with the provincial department.

Officials will continue conducting visits tocommunities across the province to add more

Important info Those taking TB treatment, HIV/AIDStreatment and chronic medication are at riskof losing their sense of hearing and should regularly go for checkups. Those who are exposed to loud noise on adaily basis are also at risk.Achildwithimpairedspeechattwoyearsoldshould go for testing. Those with a family history of hearing lossshould go for testing. It is safer to clean the interior of an ear usinga towel instead of an ear bud. When you have an ear infection, do not riskusing over the counter medication.

Happyaccidents andGod’s grace

TOkick offMandelaWeek, Ithought Ishouldgiveajoyfulaccount of why you andeveryoneyouknow (and therest of the cosmos) shouldnot exist.

Hopefully by the end ofthis column, you will havedecided if you exist by thegrace of God or if you arenothing but a happyaccident.

We gather ourperception of the universefrom ‘The standard model’,which predicted somethingcalled the Higgs Boson, infamously known as the“God Particle”.

Hints of theparticlewerefoundbyscientistsusing theLarge Hadron Collider(LHC), in Geneva in July2012.

The LHC is currently thelargest scientific instrumentin the world, having acircumference of 27kilometres and spanningthreecountries(theSKAwilldethronetheLHCwith2000satellitedishes inAfricaandanother 1000 in Australiawhen it is completed in2024).

The existence of thisparticle means there is a“Higgs field”, which is

thoughttogivemasstootherparticles, if the standardmodel holds true.

In March this year, this publication reported onthe BICEP2 results from atelescope placed in theSouth Pole which claimedthat they had indirectlydetected gravitationalwaves, which are theripples in space consistentwith the idea that theuniverse expanded rapidlyvery shortly after the BigBang.

Together these twodiscoveries seem to suggestthat the universe should notexist; that the cosmosshould have collapsed onitself almost immediatelyafter the Big Bang.

This obviously isn’t true,or Iwouldnotbesittingherewatching television whiletrying to type.

It must be said, however, that the scientists whoconducted the BICEP2experiment admit that theymay not have in factdetected gravitationalwaves - the ripples from thecosmic inflation - insteadthey may have detectedspace dust from our owngalaxy, the Milky Way.

Stuff happens, that’sscience for you.

So,somethingisnotrighthere. Obviously there isother physics we are yet tounderstand at play.

Maybe it has somethingto do with dark matter, maybe not.

At this point we can onlyspeculate and avoid what Ijust did, using darkmatter -a force we barely under-stand - to try to account fora result that should not be.

This iswhat science is allabout, what excites mostscientists - and sciencejournalistsalike - theadventof what is to be known andwhat new mystery could bebornout of newdiscoveries.

Paraphrasing NelsonMandela, whenonereachesthe top of a hill, one findsthat there aremanymore tobe climbed.

That is basically the pathof scientific discovery.

Also, when one reachesthat crest of discovery, onemay find that when lookingback, there are potholesleft behind, gaps in theknowledge of what wealready know.

Happy knowledge hunt-ing.

iThembalethu Academyperform in Harare

NQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

TODAY, a group from iThembalethu Academy forthe Performing Arts will be performing theirthird and last stage play, SoundGaze: Moving

Images of Marie in Woyzeck, in Zimbabwe, Harare. The group will then be heading back to South

Africa on Friday morning.Last week, the group had performed at the multi

media theatre production at the National ArtsFestival in Grahamstown. The play is adapted fromGeorg Buchner’s stage play Woyzeck. It is based onthe true story of a soldier who murdered his lover overinfidelity.

The play features Zimbabwean actors MichaelKudakwashe and Edgar Langeveldt. The play isdirected by iThembalethu’s communications manager Juanita Chitepo.

Chitepo said that she discovered the play in 2008

and became obsessed from her first reading.“We applied to perform in Grahamstown and I am

happy that we succeeded. Most of the students whocome to our academy have never played any musicalinstrument. After just two weeks of practice, they allstart playing in public, which is amazing,” saidChitepo.

The group performed five shows in Grahamstown.Speaking to Echo before the Harare trip, Chitepo

said that Harare is the theatre city and she lookedforward to performing in front of people who arepassionate about theatre.

She said that she is ecstatic that the play whichthe group performed is now being studied by auniversity doctoral student.

“She is studying the play for the reason thatit incorporates multimedia technology, becausethe debates in theatrical circles is that theatreis a dying entity due to strides in technology,” shesaid.

THE new MercedesBenz VClass received the RedDot Award: Product Design in one of the world’slargest product competitions for design quality.

The MPV impressed the jury primarily with itselegance and sportiness. Thanks to its designelements, the new VClass is unmistakably a memberof the MercedesBenz passenger car family, and exudes an air of modern luxury. The powerful front ischaracterised by an upright radiator grille with acentrallypositioned threedimensional star.

In the interior, the VClass continues to demonstrate the clear design philosophy.

The cockpit design, with its circular instruments, freestanding central display and intelligent use ofspace appealed to the jury. “Dynamic contours andintelligently showcased hitech features make the V

Class an automotive icon. The new VClass is a statement of modern luxury,” commented Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG.

The independent expert jury was impressed by thedesign quality of the VClass. “Its elegant yet sportydesign makes the VClass a modern MPV offeringplenty of space,” said the jury in its reasoningstatement in the Red Dot Design yearbook.

In addition to the VClass, three other passengercar models from MercedesBenz received prizes aspart of the Red Dot Award: Product Design. The RedDot for high design quality went to the MercedesBenz CClass as well as the MercedesBenz GLA. TheSClass Coupé was honoured with the “HonourableMention” award for particularly wellimplementeddetailed solutions.

23Maximising the use ofqualities in playersTHE 2014 World Cup hasclearly demonstrated theimportance of a good balancebetween individual brillianceand collective play.

A team can no longerdependononeor twocreativeplayers. In fact, every playershould be capable to initiate, participate and finish the ac-tions.

Probablythebiggest lessonis that to win at this level, oneneeds to maximise use ofqualities.

South American teamswith lots of European basedplayers have suffered in thistournament. Brazil with alarge group os England based(Chelsea) players were theworst team. It is clear thattheir work environment hasdestroyed all their creativeskills.Whathasbeenhappen-ing to the English teams in in-ternational competitions overthe past thirty years?

Do South Africans knowwho they are? Are footballleaders awareof thequalities,

characteristics, and mentali-ties of local footballers?

It will be impossible to getthe best out of our footballerswithout full understanding ofthese basic elements.

This is one reasonwe havea problem with both politicaland sports leadership in thiscountry. We are trying toohard to be Europeans.

Presently, inKwa-ZuluNa-tal,youhaveasituationwherePortuguese football techni-

cians tell our kids that theyhave to be big to play football. The scorer of the Germanteam in the 2014 World Cup,Gotze, is a small man. Messi,Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero,Xaviaresomeofthedominantfootballers in world football. Are we not surprised thatPortugal has struggled ininternational competitions inthe last 20 years?

Size is not everything infootball.Thegreatest football-ers of all time like Pele andMaradona were not giants. Itis irritating therefore to seeleaders allowing foreignersdestroying our football.

This is happening at a timewhen the world is embracingthe qualities of the small play-ers.

Football is a game for allsizes and ages. It is a game fordifferent philosophies, men-talities, styles and cultures.South Africa will best be ad-vised to find themselves. Cop-ies have never been valid.

An estimated 400 000 people packed the“fan mile” in front of the Berlin landmark towelcome home coach Joachim Loew’s teamandthetrophy-whichreturnedtoGermanyforthe first time in 24 years. It crowned years ofwork by Loew to modernise the team, andfollowed a string of near misses at recenttournaments.

“We’re allworld champions!” Loew told thecrowd.

“Of course, itwas a longway to the title, andan incredibly tough one in the end. But we’reincrediblyhappy tobeherewith the fansnow.”

Mario Götze, the scorer in the 1-0 win overArgentina in the final on Sunday, was greetedwithdeafeningcheersbytheseaof fanswavingblack, red and gold Germany flags.

Midfielder Toni Kroos led the crowd in achant of “Miro Klose” - a tribute to veteranstriker Miroslav Klose, whose two goals tookhis World Cup tally to 16 and made him thetournament’s all-time leading scorer.

The team plane landed at Tegel Airport inmidmorningafter flyinglowoverthe“fanmile”-whichbythenhadbeenpackedforhours,withsome waiting overnight to get places at thefront.

Captain Philipp Lahm led the team off theaircraft holding the trophy aloft, to cheers anda chorus of “Football’s Coming Home” fromfans on the airport’s viewing terrace.

He was followed by midfielder BastianSchweinsteiger, draped in a German flag andsporting a bandage under his right eye, theresult of a cut in the final.

From the airport, the team set off on a two-hour trip to downtown Berlin in a bus paintedwith the years of Germany’s World Cupvictories: thepreviousoccasionswere in1954,1974 and 1990.

The team donned matching black T-shirtswith “1” on the front and climbed aboard anopen-top truck for the last part of the trip to theBrandenburg Gate, crawling through thecrowds.

THETalbotTrailRunSerieshosteditsfinal event thispastweekend, incrispconditions that necessitated an earlymorning bonfire to keep the runnerswarm before they headed into theUmgeni Valley.

Shockingly, the long courseinclude two ice cold river cross-ings that created chatteramongst the runners

huddled in the 5°C temperature.Fortunately, the run was difficult

and on reaching the first rivercrossing, all therunnershadwarmedenough.

The cold water had a variety ofeffects, from soothing tired legs to

causing cramp.“It’s unusual to tacklebig river crossings in

the middle of winter and there arerunners who don’t do this eventbecause of it, but for others it’s veryexciting and creates a thrill that hasthemonahighfortherestoftheweek-end” said race organiser AndrewBooth from KZN Trail Running.

Solicitor Mandulja completed hissecondwinof theseriesafterwinningthe Table Mountain event. It was the

same story for second place, withAyandaMlotshwa claiming the samespothedidatthepreviouseventof theseries. Muzi Madikwa, winner ofmany previous Talbot Series events, had to settle for solid third place.

In the ladies it was Trish Bahlmanwho took the honours by more than10minutes,makingher first showingon the trail after a very successful

missed a turning andwent off coursefor awhile, resulting in her droppingout of a definite podium finish.

started well without players feeling underpressure. We were able to work our way up

nicely and saw ourselves qualifying for the final for the first time in history,” said Maseko.Maseko says he was not really surprised to see the

HARD work displayed by theofficials, coaches and the localDepartment of Sports and Recreation paid off

when two netball teams (U19 girls and boys open)performed well during the national U19 netballchampionships (men and women) in Durban lastweek.

The two teams that represented uMgungundlovuduring the week long Netball South Africa tournament surprised their opponents and netballfollowers, in Durban’s Hoy Park, who came out in theirnumbers.

The uMgungundlovu mens team started the earlygames on a high note, collecting valuable points tomake it all the way to the finals.

Local netball development officer, anduMgungundlovu coach based in Sobantu, ArthurMaseko told Echo that his team was happy to be seenas the underdogs and work from the back.

“We enjoyed our underdogs tag from day one. It
