Fire safetytaughtin highriskcommunities
NQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]
IN order to contain fire disasters in highrisk areas the Msunduzi Municipality isplanning to form and implement community emergency response teams(Cert) where certain individuals withincommunities will receive basic firefighting training to deal with fire emergencies.
The municipality believes that be
cause individuals are the firstresponders in the event of a fire, propertraining is needed before the municipalfire department arrives.
Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi toldthe Executive Committee thatcommunity volunteers, who will be partof Cert, will undergo basic firefightingtraining.
“The approach was that we formthese community emergency response
teams by identifying volunteers in certainzones, and train them in basic fire fightingso that whenever there are fires, beforethe municipality can respond, at least thepeople within the locality can assist incontaining those fire disasters,” saidNkosi.
A report from the municipality’s fireand rescue unit states that fires in informal settlements, and other highriskareas, are out of control, resulting in the
high loss of life and property and affecting the most vulnerable citizens.
Through the formation of Cert, various lifesaving skills can be impartedto community members in fire fighting, first aid, safety and security and electricalsafety.
Each member, who is trained, will beissued with a 1,5kg fire extinguisher foruse within the community or risk area inwhich they live or have been deployed.

THE Sokhela family in Imbali’s Unit 15say that they have been rendered vul-nerable to criminals after a Msunduzi
Municipality refuse truckdestroyed theiryardwall.
To make matters worse said ThamiSokhela, a municipal official assigned to helpthem repair the damage is “unco-operativeand utterly rude”.
“ThishappenedonTuesdaywhenwewereat work. The neighbours phonedmywife andtold her that a refuse truck had smashed ourfront yardwall. They said later aman arrivedand took pictures and took down some notes, but no one contacted us until my wife went tothemunicipality to make a report. It was onlythen she discovered that the person who ishandling ourmatter is Mfuphi,” said Sokhela.
JosephMfuphi is theEdendalerefuseman-agement depot supervisor.
Sokhela said there was no feedback fromMfuphi until he contacted him on Friday to
find out about the progress on repairing thedamaged wall. He said Mfuphi was rude andrefused to co-operate.
“We want the wall to be repaired soon be-cause our house has become vulnerable tocriminals. I don’t want a repeat of what hap-pened recently,” he said.
Sokhela said that during the storms inJanuary, a portion of their wall was damagedandcriminalstooktheopportunityofsneakinginto their house and stealing a laptop, a radioand a cellphonewhile the familywas at work.
“If thecriminalsbreakintothehouseagain, who will pay for the items that might bestolen? They [municipality] must fix the fencesoon.”
Mfuphi disputed allegations of rudenessandbeingunco-operative toSokhela, saying itwas Sokhela who proved to be difficult as hewanted to dictate the pace at which thingsmust be done without following the correctroute.
“ThereisaprocesstobefollowedandIhavedone all that needs to be done from my side.He needs to take three quotations to the 8thfloor [ofASChettyBuilding] so wecanstart re-pairinghiswall immediately.Weare justwait-ing for the quotation,” said Mfuphi.

OUR front page story this week is all about ourhighly successful Spelling Bee competition, whichmembers of the publicwill be able to at-tend and watch in August.
SoeffectivehastheeventbeenthattheOfficeof the Premier has partneredwith us this yeartotakethecompetitionfromonearea(Zululand–wherethecompetitionoriginated)andextendit over the entire province.
We are immensely proud of our SpellingBee,whichwebelievehastheabilityandpowerto teach our local young people focus, disci-pline, determination and that fruit is bornefrom hard work.
However, theeventdoesnotonlybenefitpu-pils. It creates an opportunity for schools andteachers to pool their intellectual resources toteach their charges with added gusto and en-thusiasm.
Teachers and schools are rewarded for the
efforts of their spellers, as it takesmany hoursof tutoring to get pupils to the point of finalists.
This has been clearly seen at our previousZululand Spelling Bee, now in its fifth year, where teachers have put in countless hours oftheir own timeonweekends andafter hours totutorentrants. And italways, without fail, paysoff.
If you are a teacher at a disadvantagedschoolwhere pupils speakEnglish as a secondlanguage, we encourage you to enter your topspellers into the competition.
Let’s work together to build youth who arestronger, healthier and brighter thanwe couldimagine.

“TRUTH is dangerous. It topples and kills kings. It stirsgentle men into rage… wakes old grievances and openwounds. And yet there is one thing that is more dangerous than truth. Those who would silence truth’s voice aremore destructive by far.” — Frances Hardinge.
Speaking truth in South Africa can be dangerous, especially if it challenges longheld opinions and forces reexamination of fundamental beliefs.
Impactful truth is not always easy to tell and to hear.It challenges people, scares people and sometimes offends people. It forces reassessment and rethinking, itstimulates change and challenges the status quo. Hereis one truth in South African football — we remaintrappedinancientwaysadministrativelyandtechnically.
While the world is moving forward, we have decidedto stick to unproven methods. How do you explain agerestrictions in promotionrelegation leagues? Why doyou put age restriction in second division and not in thepremier league?
If Mamelodi Sundowns do not have 19 and 20yearolds ready for their first team, where is Sobantu ShootingStars going to get these players?
The football world understands the difference between youth and adult football. Successful nations likeSpain and German have youth leagues i.e. U15 to U21.
Clubs, football associations and the public do notchallenge these myopic decisions because of the fear ofbeing excluded from the main table. Adult and youthfootballers are suffering because of these cosmetic interventions.
The second truth is that South Africa remains a country that associates competency with race. The only Blackpeople in top and influential positions get there mainlythrough political pressure. Football is not different fromother public or private institutions. Talent knows no colour or race.
Lastly, South African football coaches whethergreen, yellow or pink need to start taking their professionseriously. The reality is that South African players are areflection of the work done by their coaches. Let us improve the quality of our skills and professional competency. Unzima lo mthwalo.

DUMISANI ZONDI>>[email protected]
AT LEAST 10 000 athletes from all overthe world are gearing up to run in thethird Mandela Day Marathon to be runfrom Imbali to Howick in August.
The race will be the first after thedeath of South Africa’s first democrati-cally elected president, Nelson Mandela(95) on 5 December 2013.
The marathon was inaugurated bythe uMgungundlovu District Municipali-ty in 2012 to honour the legacy ofthe icon affectionately known asMadiba.
The launch coincided with the com-memoration of the 50th anniversary ofthe Rivonia Trial when 10 activists, in-cluding Mandela, Walter Sisulu, DenisGoldberg, Govan Mbeki, Lionel “Rusty”Bernstein, Ahmed Kathrada, RaymondMhlaba, James Kantor, Elias Motsoale-di and Andrew Mlangeni werecharged and found guilty of variousstruggle- related activities that tookplace between 3 December 1963 and12 June, 1964.
Speaking at the launch at the Man-dela capture site in Howick, Co-opera-tive Governance and Traditional AffairsMEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said themarathon commemorates Mandela asone of the world’s greatest icons.
“The choice of the marathon to cel-ebrate the legacy of Madiba is a correctone. The marathon is widely regardedas one of the hardest sportingevents and, as such, is a fitting disci-pline in which the athlete is called uponto demonstrate his or her prowess andtriumph over his or her own fears offailure and physical limitations.”
According to Dube-Ncube, thissporting event aims to remind people ofthe struggle once fought to give SouthAfricans the freedom that at times, afew now take for granted.
“It celebrates the legacy of thetriumph of the human spirit and perse-
verance over intolerance and adversi-ty.” Amplifying the tribute to Madiba,Mgungudlovu District Municipalitymayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the race isheld to remind all people not to forgetMandela’s legacy and to understand thetrials and tribulations of a person whospent 27 years in prison.
Speaking on behalf of uMngeniMunicipality mayor as the host, councilspeaker Thandiwe Mchunu expressedtheir gratitute for the race saying theyfeel honoured that it is happening with-in their municipality.
She said the event started small, buthas now gone from strength to strengthbecause when it started in 2012only 1500 athletes participated, butthe number grew to 5 500 in 2013 andthis means an economic boost for thearea.
The economic activities and touristsare expected to boost the economy ofuMngeni Municipality in the days lead-ing up to the event and on the day, bymillions.
Prize money has grown fromR300 000 in 2012 to R1 million. Theoverall male and female winners of the42,2 km race will get R50 000 each.
Race director Johan van Stadensaid there will be other supportingraces on the day, adding that the entryfee for the main event is R150. Entriesclose on June 30.
It will start from Manaye hall in Im-bali at 7 am and finish at the Mandelacapture site at 1 pm and will be tele-vised live by SABC for the six hours.
The 2014 Comrades Marathonwinner, Bongumusa Mthembu, wasintroduced as one of the raceambassadors.
He told Echo that he will not be par-ticipating in the Mandela race but willbe advising those who need to fine-tunetheir techniques for the race.
“I will not put myself under pres-sure since this one happens too close toComrades,” he said.

Talbot Trail Runseries kicks offACOLDcrispmorninggreetedrunnersastheyarrived at Maweni Trail Centre on the TableMountain road just outside Pietermaritzburgfor the first event in theTalbotTrailRunSeriesrecently.
Thesponsorswereafraidthefrigidtemper-atures might keep runners at bay, but thecrowd swelled and the atmosphere warmedas runners’ sipped warm tea and coffee. Aslight delay in the start grew the anticipationof the trail to comeand soon the runnerswereoff, all 350 of them in onemass start, the coldmorning completely forgotten.
The trails at Maweni have been purposebuilt, offering flowingandbouncy single trackon both the shorter 7km and longer 14kmcourses.Often running seemseffortless as thetrack sucks you in and keeps you thinkingwhere to place your next foot. The views intothe Umngeni Valley are spectacular giving astrong feel of being in thewilderness. The set-ting is apt with the Duzi-Umngeni Conserva-tion Trust being the charity benefactor of theseries of events.
Small cash prizes are awarded to the win-ningmenandladiesofbothcourses(fullresultson www.kzntrailrunning.co.za), but its thelucky draw prizes that most of the field enjoyattheTalbotTrailRunSeries.Themostsought-after prize is always the Brooks trail shoevouchers handed out by Justin Hand ofDurban Runner. Music, hot coffee andcroissants kept many runners chatting at thefinish until after the prize giving.
