BI-WEEKLY NEWSLETTER BYVice President of Communications, Brooke McDaniel

Fellow Yellow Jackets, It got cold very quickly over the past week in Atlanta, just in time for the Week Preceding Final Exams when none of us will be leaving the library anyway. Best of luck with final projects and exams, and I hope that your Winter Break plans include some great holiday celebrations, cheering on our Football team at the Independence Bowl on December 27, and catching up on a lot of rest. Even as the semester winds up, SGA has a lot in the works to enhance your experience on campus and in the classroom. Please see below for what we’re working on!

JacketPages Update:JacketPages will be updated on January 4th, 2011. Students should not submit funding requests between now and January 5th to be sure that the bill is not lost in the transition to the new interface. Contact Matlock Rogers, Vice President of Campus Organizations, at [email protected] with any questions.

Georgia Tech Day at the Capitol:With upcoming legislation regarding HOPE scholarship funding, stem-cell research and immigration policy, decisions made in the 2011 legislative session will have a significant impact on Georgia Tech and on your education. SGA and the Office of Community and Government Relations would like invite YOU to share your opinions on these topics, interact with your representatives, and be a part of the political process. Join us at Georgia Tech Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. The event is during the first week of Spring classes, during drop-add week. Transportation and breakfast will be provided. You can RSVP at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L95XT8L. Contact Elle Creel, Executive Director of External Affairs, at [email protected] if you have any questions, comment or ideas and we hope to see you on January 12th!

Budget Requests Update:Budgets submitted by 117 student organizations are currently under consideration by the Joint Finance Committee and will be examined by the Graduate Student Senate and the Undergraduate House of Representatives during Spring Semester. Budgets are funded by the Student Activity Fee each year, and remaining funds are allocated by GSS/UHR during the school year. Last year’s budget requests totaled $5,180,037 and funded at $4,424,040. This year, requests totaled $5,118,354. Contact Brad Bauerkemper, Vice President of Finance, at [email protected] with any questions.

Student-Faculty Expectations Agreement:The Service & Leadership Task Force - a subsidiary of the Academic Affairs Board - made significant progress last week in its efforts to design a new service-learning program at Tech and support the student body's passion for "Progress & Service." After meeting with professors, administrators, and students for several months, the task force, led by Mehreen Iqbal, submitted an extensive proposal to Dr. Peterson that outlines SGA's plan for establishing a revolutionary Center for Service-Learning. This new program would will allow students to apply their academic passions (especially in engineering, science, and computing) to key social needs in the Atlanta community. Receiving a very enthusiastic response, this initiative will be moving forward over the next few months as a new Presidential Task Force begins the difficult job of implementing this exciting opportunity. If you have questions about this proposal or SGA's many academic initiatives, please contact Austen Edwards, Executive Director of Academic Affairs, at [email protected]

WPFE and CIOS:Please take the time to provide genuine feedback for your professors through the Course Instructor Opinions Survey (CIOS) this semester. Your voice matters, and results from the surveys are taken very seriously by faculty and administrators for performance reviews, and in SGA’s Course Critique. Let’s help continue to improve the quality of teaching at Georgia Tech by investing in our professors by completing the surveys from 11/29-12/19 at http://www.coursesurvey.gatech.edu. For more information on the Week Preceding Final Exams (WPFE) policies and how to address concerns, refer to the SGA website at www.sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate/WPFE. Please contact John Miller ([email protected]) with questions/concerns.

Spring Co-Op Representative Position Open:The Undergraduate House of Representatives has an opening for any student who is a member of the Co-Op program and will be on campus during the Spring semester. The application can be found at http://www.sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate/legislative/get-involved. Please contact Brenda Morales, Executive Vice President, with questions at [email protected]

Student Government is here to serve you, so please know that we are always willing to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at any time with concerns or questions that you may have, or if you’re interested in getting involved in what we’re doing!
