Aaron RichieMaturing with help from GoodwillAaron came to Goodwill when he was 17 as part of his school’s Year 13 program, later completing Goodwill’s Habilitation program. At Goodwill, Aaron learned how to be independent and do things like grocery shopping, riding a bus, and managing money. Now, Aaron is involved in Pre-Vocational training at Goodwill, which someday could help him get a job in the community. “Here they have me working all over the place. I load the tables, run the pallet jack, and clean the bathroom in the Adult Daycare Program. I like work.”

Aaron shares how he has matured with Goodwill’s help. “On December 1st I moved out of my mom’s house. I am now 25 and live in a Crossroads duplex with 2 roommates. I get along well with them. We play cards and I love to play video games.”

“I love Goodwill. I ask a lot of questions and they don’t mind. The people here are very supportive and give me courage to do things.”

Cara Golding Finding Stability through the Power of WorkCara grew up on a farm on the Colorado/Nebraska border. In 2000, her husband got a job in Florida, so they headed there to start their lives together. Life was good. She has a paralegal degree and held jobs as a legal and executive assistant.

Things turned the wrong way when Cara was injured and became hooked on prescription drugs. Her supplier introduced her to other substances and her life took a spiral. “I eventually lost everything and was in and out of 30-day treatment programs, but I couldn’t break the cycle of addiction.”

Down and out with no place to go, Cara’s sister encouraged her to move to South Sioux City, NE. Shortly after she arrived she relapsed and ended up at Jackson Recovery. “The first few months were extremely hard. I never want to go through that again.” Cara graduated in eight months, and transferred to the Sanctuary at Jackson Recovery for another year of treatment.

One day Cara came to Goodwill with a voucher for clothing. While shopping in the store, she noticed Goodwill’s Connection Center. She learned about Goodwill’s job search assistance and free technology access. Required to get a job for her treatment program, Cara received assistance putting together a great resume. “The people in the Connection Center told me they saw something in me I had trouble seeing in myself.”

After volunteering at Goodwill to get a feel for working, Cara eventually applied and got a job at Goodwill. “I am very grateful to all the wonderful and supportive people at Goodwill for helping me believe in myself again.”

Christian Sandoval Apprentice Electrician Thanks Those Who Supported HimChristian knew that high school was not a good fit for him. “A group of kids were always doing things to set me off. When I could not take it anymore, I got into fights. That’s how I ended up in the juvenile court system and on probation.”

Following advice from his sister, Christian applied to Goodwill’s YouthBuild program, a yearlong alternative school setting teaching trade skills and leadership with a high school curriculum. “I started YouthBuild and it was totally different. It was a lot smaller and you can learn at your own pace. I really like the carpentry part, and the people at YouthBuild really supported me.” Christian excelled in YouthBuild and graduated in less than a year.

Life got even better for Christian after graduation. YouthBuild staff saw Christian’s potential and recommended him for a position with an electrical company. “I am a ‘Construction Wireman One,’ which means I help do all kinds of things to get ready for the job site like wiring outlets, running pipe, and assembling light fixtures. I take classes every Friday and after five years, I will become a journeyman electrician.”

“YouthBuild changed my life. My mom always told me to ‘get away from those people, they aren’t your friends.’ She was right. I found out what friendship was all about at YouthBuild.”

Ogy Pena Getting Stronger Every Day at GoodwillOgy’s story starts in Texas where she and her four boys were living with her in-laws. Her husband of 20 years took off for Sioux Falls, SD and was not sending any money. She was working but was not making enough to get by. After a bad event with her father-in-law, Ogy’s family was kicked out and she was desperate to find a place to live.

Things took a turn for the worse when Ogy was introduced to a man who offered high pay to traffic drugs. “I was desperate to get a roof over my kids’ heads so I agreed. Three months later, I was arrested and sentenced three years in prison. My sister in Yankton, SD agreed to take care of my boys.”

After being released from prison, Ogy arrived in Yankton, SD with nothing but the clothes on her back. The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulations helped her get into the TANF program, which led her to Goodwill. “This changed my life. Nickie and John, my bosses, help me out in every way they can. Their support helps me to do things I never thought I could. Goodwill is why every day I get a little bit stronger and more independent, which comes in handy trying to raise four teenage boys by myself.”

As for her future, Ogy shares that she recently got her own place to live. “It’s not much but we are all together. Once my boys grow and are on their own, I want to work on my GED. I was two credits from getting it in prison.”
