Dear Friends:Thank you for your allegiance to Goodwill and belief in our mission to provide a better quality of life to those in need. With your help, last year, we helped nearly 13,000 individuals toward betterment through jobs and related services.

In 2017, Goodwill achieved remarkable accomplishments to better serve our communities.

We are especially proud to talk about the new Donation Processing Center because it is a distinct departure from the way we used to employ individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Our new Donation Processing Center follows suit with what legislatures in Pennsylvania are advocating – the rights of people, regardless of disability, to work.

Pennsylvania is now an Employment First state. Governor Wolf declared this in an executive order in March 2016, and there is now proposed legislation in both the Pennsylvania House and Senate to raise the bar to another level. And, most importantly, place the onus on employers to bridge the gap between their needs, and a workforce that is ready, willing, and able.

We know that Employment First does not mean, nor should it imply, “employment only.” True and sustaining success in employment cannot be accomplished without the coordination of many factors and forces. Training, socialization, support, and addressing the unique needs and desires of individuals is a challenge for any service system. An array of other supports and services are available, but need to be further cultivated in order for people to gain meaningful access and integrate successfully into their communities.

Our ultimate dream and vision is a world where equal employment opportunities and competitive pay are available for every person with a disability, from receptive and enlightened communities.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

We encourage you to read this report and learn more about our successful ventures.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Smith Shawn P. HanlonPresident/CEO Chairperson/Goodwill Board of Directors

For decades, Goodwill operated a

traditional sheltered workshop pro-

gram to provide training and work

opportunities for program partic-

ipants who came to Goodwill for

services. Historically, the sheltered

workshop model served individuals

with the most significant intellectual

and developmental disabilities.

Although this sheltered workshop

model was been a widely accepted

industry practice among service

providers for decades, Goodwill

recognized a changing landscape

in regard to how services should

be provided for people with disabil-

ities. Beginning in 2015, Goodwill

initiated an important transfor-

mation away from the traditional

sheltered workshop model.

To achieve this transformation, we

turned to our strengths to create

our new Donation Processing

Center model to provide an inte-

grated work setting for participants,

including people with disabilities

and with other employment barri-

ers. In this integrated workplace,

all of the employees now receive

minimum wage or more.

Goodwill’s New Donation Processing Center…

“The best time to plant a tree was

twenty years ago, but the second

best time is now.”

Page 4: ANNUAL REPORT - Goodwill NCWV

5

Additionally, the Donation

Processing Center is a unit of

Goodwill’s retail system, demon-

strating further integration of the

operation and its employees com-

pletely within Goodwill.

System transformation in sup-

porting people with intellectual

and developmental disabilities

has been underway for decades.

Sheltered workshops evolved as

a means of providing training,

employment skills, and opportuni-

ties for socialization. As with group

homes, the states and federal

government promoted and funded

these alternatives. There was a

time when these were very pro-

gressive ideas.

Today, we know that the true

answers and solutions to productiv-

ity and happiness lie in the com-

munity. While we wish we would

have embarked upon this journey

sooner, there is no better time than

today to embrace this philosophy.

In spring of 2017, Goodwill

opened a new Welcome Center at

Goodwill’s Workforce Development

Center in the Lawrenceville section

of Pittsburgh. The Welcome Center

serves as a hub for all services

offered throughout the entire

agency.

When an individual visits or calls

the Welcome Center, they can

uncover what type of service

they need. A comprehensive

assessment is used to discover

an individual’s goals and to iden-

tify the barriers to achieving those

goals. Consumers are then con-

nected with all the eligible services

to support them.

New and existing Goodwill partic-

ipants are able to meet with staff

to go through a comprehensive

assessment to determine what

Goodwill services are available.

Staff offer service planning and

follow up to ensure that individuals

are able to connect with the ser-

vices they choose to utilize.

The Welcome Center features a

team of specialists who address

the multiple barriers individuals

face on their way to employment

and self-reliance. Barriers can

include things like criminal

backgrounds, housing issues

and low-income status. Core to

Goodwill’s mission is breaking

down such barriers for the good of

those it serves.

Community Support Services strive to meet the

basic needs, such as food,

clothing, and shelter. Other

supports include free tax

prep, budgeting, and benefits

counseling.

Disability Services provide opportunities for individuals to

gain skills, volunteer, train for work, and obtain employment in

the community.

Education and Testing Services provide individuals with

preparation for high school equivalency tests, English as a

second language, and basic computer workshops.

Reintegration Services address the various barriers

of individuals who have a

criminal background.

The Welcome Center’s Array of ServicesAn individual can receive help from one or multiple programs within these areas:

Supportive Housing helps

individuals and families who

are homeless transition to

permanent housing.

Transition Services prepare

high school youth with

disabilities for the workforce.

Workforce Development and Placement Services provide job search support to individuals including veterans,

those on public benefits, and social security recipients.

Youth Services provide

youth with training, mentoring,

job-shadowing, and summer

employment opportunities.

A Big Celebration Is Coming SoonIn 2019, Goodwill SWPA will celebrate its 100th anniversary. It may still be one year

away, but a great deal of planning has already begun to ensure this milestone

anniversary will be a very special occasion.

Goodwill’s new logo marks our

100 years of providing support

in our communities.

Goodwill will host public events and activities throughout the year to highlight

tremendous contributions from the past century, draw attention to the 100th anniversary,

and demonstrate a renewed vision for the next 100 years.

Themed events will be held at all Goodwill locations to connect team members to

Goodwill’s heritage and history, while various in-store promotions will give donors and

retail store shoppers a chance to get involved.

Goodwill looks forward to an amazing year and invites all supporters to join in the

celebration.
