Everything we do at Discover Goodwill supports our mission of changing lives. As you turn the pages of this annual report, I invite you to read about Rochelle, Jamie, John and Sheryl whose lives were changed thanks to your donations to Discover Goodwill. They represent 60,435 people Discover Goodwill served through our community-based programs in 2013.

To support the many services we provide, Discover Goodwill sells donated clothes and other household items in our nine retail centers and uses the revenue to fund job training, employment placement assistance and other needed services.

When you donate to Discover Goodwill, you help create jobs in our community. Last year alone, 6,257 people found meaningful employment as a result of Discover Goodwill’s career services.

Donors did their part by donating their gently-used items and we did ours by offering easy access to donation centers and friendly donation attendants who help unload items, provide receipts for tax purposes and serve bottled water as a thank you. We have 20 conveniently located attended donation centers to serve donors.

Discover Goodwill relies on your donations to help keep pace with the growing needs of our community. Did you know in addition to cleaning out your closets, you can help create jobs in other ways: Host a donation drive at your place of business, school or church; recycle your computer equipment through Goodwill’s Reconnect program with Dell; or donate your old vehicle and give it a new life.

Would you like to get a sense of how your donations change someone’s life? Discover Goodwill’s website has a Donation Impact Calculator to calculate how your donations translate into much-needed job training and placement services. Learn more at DiscoverMyGoodwill.org.

And remember, DONATE…CREATE A JOB…CHANGE A LIFE.

Discover Goodwill launched a new grounds maintenance social enterprise in April, in partnership with the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs and the Business Improvement District, employing nine people with employment challenges.

Pursuits, a skills development program for high school students with learning challenges, graduated five students from its inaugural class in January by helping them prepare for jobs in the community. A second class held in the fall graduated 12 students.

2013 Achiever of the YearJamie LockyerJamie Lockyer’s journey to independence was mired by developmental and circumstantial challenges that could have left her sidelined. Fortunately, the 30-year-old’s strong faith and internal drive to succeed have kept her on course and moving forward in a positive direction. Diagnosed early in life with a cognitive disability, Jamie joined Discover Goodwill’s Possibilities program shortly after its launch in 2012 with behavioral concerns ranging from emotional outbursts to social withdrawal.

Over time, Jamie’s active involvement in Possibilities’ life skills training has lifted her confidence to heights she never imagined. Her keen interest in finance has been fostered by

the money management classes she attends and has helped her establish a budget since securing part-time employment. Jamie’s aspirations of living on her own one

day have also been nurtured through the functional skills she has acquired in the Possibilities’ apartment.

Jamie takes great pride in her appearance—reserving time each morning to fix her hair and pick out the right clothing ensemble.

She is involved in Special Olympics as a multi-sport competitor, and loves to spend time shopping and dining with family and friends. When informed about her big award, an ever-gracious Jamie paused with her mother to offer a tearful prayer of thanks for her many blessings. They were what she terms “happy tears,” inspired by her remarkable journey of achievement.

2013 Helms Legacy Award Honoree Sheryl SmithWhether championing the interests of her clients over the phone or visiting their houses to ensure they are safe and sound, Discover Goodwill’s Residential Case Manager Sheryl Smith feels right at home on the job. The now self-sufficient, single parent of three grown boys hasn’t always enjoyed a comfortable life, though. Nearly 10 years ago, Sheryl broke ties from an abusive relationship and, soon after, suffered an accident that left her disabled and in agony.

Sheryl’s heavy burden caring for three children alone while contending with chronic pain and limited mobility became overwhelming. Later, she added unemployment to her mounting list of laments, which spiraled into deep depression and significant weight gain that impacted every area of her life. The grief-stricken mom began to reclaim her life after she was hired by Discover Goodwill, where she found renewed purpose helping individuals with disabilities and disadvantages live life to the fullest.

In her nearing four-years of employment with Discover Goodwill, Sheryl’s confidence and outlook have blossomed, as she has been given the opportunity to excel in her profession and make a difference in the lives of others. Along with her painful past, Sheryl has shed over 70 pounds of weight and has found her true calling serving other at-risk individuals. Sheryl’s compassion for others struggling to find and maintain their independence reflects the heart and soul of Goodwill founder Dr. Edgar J. Helms, the namesake for the prestigious honor deservedly bestowed to her.

2013 Community Employee of the Year John Lydell Discover Goodwill custodian John Lydell may be soft spoken on the job at the U.S. Air Force Academy, but his personal and professional growth over the past decade speak loudly about his determination and zeal for life. Since birth, John has faced a variety of physical and mental challenges that were compounded as a young adult entering the workforce. Early in his employment, John struggled to overcome bouts of anger and frustration while learning his cleaning responsibilities and navigating the maze of hallways in the cadet dorms.

Over time, John’s confidence and engagement in his work and with fellow employees have grown tremendously, along with his tasks. Despite a persistent drag in his step, the young man has no problems keeping pace with his peers. He also displays a military-like command of time—illustrated by the three watches draped around his wrists. John explains that his throng of timepieces helps ensure that he is never late for the morning bus or his daily rounds.

Away from work, John loves to spend time with his family—whether bowling, attending church or consuming heaping mounds of his mom’s spaghetti and meatballs. John’s positive attitude and winning smile have bolstered his popularity with peers and Academy cadets, who routinely converse with him in the hallways and occasionally flash a military salute for his award-winning accomplishments. Discover Goodwill likewise salutes Community Employee of the Year John Lydell for a job well done!

2013 Independence Award HonoreeRochelle Ortega

Single-mother Rochelle Ortega came to Discover Goodwill in October 2008 with a fervent desire to succeed but lacking the roadmap or resources to make it happen. After ending an abusive marriage and taking custody of her three children—all under the age of 10—Rochelle realized that giving up was not an option. But scarce finances, a temperamental vehicle and her child-caring mother’s untimely move out of state were major stressors that left Rochelle feeling wholly frustrated and alone.

Once enrolled in Discover Goodwill’s career development program, Rochelle’s instinctive desire to become an educator and mentor for primary-age children started taking root. Discover Goodwill helped eliminate external distractions like car repairs, child care and housing that allowed Rochelle to focus on schooling in elementary education. Never letting the word “quit” enter her vocabulary, the determined mom and student received her teaching degree and license in late 2012.

As a first-year, second-grade teacher at a charter school, Rochelle runs her class like a maestro conducts an orchestra—with passion, grace and careful attention to detail. Rochelle displays a big smile when referencing her care for youngsters at home as “homework” for her daily responsibilities in the classroom, which begin and end with hugs and words of encouragement. Drawing on lessons from her past life and present successes, Rochelle is laying a strong foundation for her children and students that will likewise ensure their future independence.

The Guiding Light Award is presented at Discover Goodwill’s Annual Dinner in recognition of partners who have shown exemplary leadership, stewardship and philanthropic commitment to Goodwill. The 2014 Guiding Light Award is presented to Alan Steiner in recognition of his service and generosity to Discover Goodwill.

Since 2007, Alan has given his time and expertise as a member of the Discover Goodwill Board of Directors. During this time, he has also served as a member and chairman of the Finance, Mission Services and Marketing committees.

The capstone achievements of Alan’s leadership occurred during his chairmanship of the Mission Services committee. Alan provided critical insight into the creation of Possibilities, a first-of-its-kind program serving individuals with disabilities. He also helped raise an unprecedented $10 million in under two years as the co-chair of the “Paths to Independence” capital campaign which supported Possibilities, Fresh Start Commercial Laundry and Discover Goodwill’s administrative campus.

Alan Steiner, Guiding Light Honoree

As significant annual and capital campaign donors, Alan and his wife Barbara are also members of The Good Will Society, having named Discover Goodwill Foundation as a beneficiary in their estate.
