a Message to our friends

froM the President and ceo

Dear Friends o Goodwill,

Goodwill works.

Goodwill works to help people with barriers to employment fnd jobs. Goodwill works to help young people

succeed in lie. Goodwill works so that individuals and amilies can stretch their dollars and buy quality clothes

and household items at reasonable prices. And, Goodwill works or businesses looking or qualifed employees.

In this annual report, you will see examples o how Goodwill works – success stories like Wilbert Seoane who

came to Boston Career Link or job training, or Christian Davis who works in the AbilityOne program, or Clover,

a ast-growing startup that has hired many Goodwill training graduates.

You will also read about our new Youth Initiative, which oers young people a year-round experience, and the

ways our retail enterprise continues to serve the community. There are many Goodwill works to share!

This past year Goodwill lost two important leaders – longtime board member Peter Morrissey and vice president

o retail Terry Fitzpatrick. Both men were deeply committed to Goodwill and its mission and both will be missed.

We dedicate this annual report to them.

Goodwill worked in 2012 because o the contributions made by Goodwill’s community o board members,

collaborators, donors, riends, supporters, customers, and sta who took Goodwill’s mission to heart. It is

because o this community that we have been able to accomplish so much.

Thank you to everyone who helped Goodwill work and thereby helped those we serve achieve independence

and dignity through work.

Sincerely,

Joanne K. Hilerty

President and CEO

“The training I got at

Goodwill was great.”

What does Goodwill do? Goodwill works.

It works to help people with barriers to employment fnd jobs so that theycan achieve independence and dignity through work. Goodwill does this

by providing job training and career services, which are at the core oGoodwill’s mission. Last year, Goodwill served almost 9,000 individuals inthese programs.

There were 622 served in Goodwill’s job training programs – individualswith disabilities and other barriers who are considered the hardest toemploy. Services include case management, work-readiness training, skills training, on-the-job training, job placement, and post-placementsupports.

This year Goodwill launched the Will to Work program or youngpeople with disabilities between the ages o 22 and 25. And, Goodwillenhanced its janitorial and building maintenance program and establishedan advisory council or the program so that graduates had betteremployment opportunities. Goodwill’s AbilityOne program continued todeliver housekeeping and building maintenance services or seven millionsquare eet o government ofce buildings with at least 75 percent o thelabor hours provided by individuals with disabilities.

Boston Career Link, the one-stop career center that Goodwill operates, assisted 8,273 individuals with career services and reerrals to trainingprograms. The services included career counseling, workshops, jobpostings, online job search and job application training, computer access, and more. Boston Career Link also created more opportunities or jobseekers and employers to connect, with 65 employers actively recruitingon-site at our job airs, fve mass hiring events, and 173 on-site recruitmentsessions, a signifcant increase over the previous year.

What does Goodwill do? Goodwill works.

Businesses and goodwillGoodwill works because it has strong partnerships with businesses.

Goodwill connects Boston Career Link job seekers and participants rom Goodwill’s job training programs with companies looking orgood employees through its partnerships with businesses and other employers. Companies like Arrow Security, Boston Medical Center,

Conservation Services Group, and Sodexo, to name just a ew, work with Boston Career Link because they know they can count onfnding reliable workers.

Business connections made it possible or Boston Career Link to hold our job airs, fve mass hiring events, and 173 on-site recruitmentsessions serving more than 4,300 job seekers. Many businesses also provide fnancial support that keep Goodwill’s job training, careerservices, and youth programs going and growing.

Goodwill and the business community also work together in many other ways, such as oering employees volunteer opportunities or itsThanksgiving events or Youth Holiday Party. There is also Goodwill’s annual “Put Your Clothes to Work” corporate clothing drive led byMcGladrey, with support rom Bingham, The Castle Group, Online Buddies, and The TJX Companies. In 2012, these clothing drives madeit possible or Goodwill’s Clothing Collaborative or Job Trainees to provide more than 350 job seekers, both men and women, withinterview attire and accessories to help them secure employment.

“We really liked that Goodwill had parents in their program because the hours they were available mirrored the hours we were looking or,said Megan Pileggi, director o human resources or Clover. “We needed people who could work 11 to 3 every day and that’s parents whohave to put their kids on the bus every morning.”

Goodwill’s First Step is a our-week program that prepares people to work in entry-level positions in a number o industries, including oodservice. As part o the program, Goodwill acilitates on-site hiring events to help place people in jobs. Clover participated in severarecruitment sessions at Goodwill.
