The duo hosts Kitchen and Bath-room Design and Design Trends for 2014 talks during this year’s April 25 to 27 Home Expo.
“We’ll talk a lot about design in gen-eral and accessories,” says McGeachy of the second presentation. “That’s where people really spend the major-ity of their money in renovations. It has to be functional and have good form, but then you do want it to look nice and have style.”
Wallpaper is a top trend they’ll hit on during presentations at the show.
“Some of the paper they’re making now, it’s so beautiful, easy to apply and easy to remove and they’re gor-geous. I don’t see it ever going back out of style again. It’s come way too far. It’s not your grandmother’s wallpa-per,” Drury says.
Hues come in the deepest plums and teals to gold banana leaf, with thick sound proofing material and murals that make you think you’re in Marrakech, or on Madison Avenue in New York.
The hottest colour this year is radi-ant orchid (a fuchsia).
“We’ll be giving people tips and ideas for incorporating that colour without going out and buying a radi-ant orchid couch. My take is choose trends that work for you, not just choosing it because it’s a trend.”
These design professionals will out-line ways to select accessories that can be easily remedied if need be.
“Try it out and seeing how it works for you,” McGeachy says. “A lot of peo-ple have to think resale as well. Things that are your decor, that’s fine if it appeals to the masses.”
She’ll offer tips on how a man might slip some radiant orchid into a bach-elor pad and subtly throw in accents.
“Don’t do anything that’s going to cost a lot of money. Don’t change out the kitchen cabinets in radiant orchid,” she says. “When you get sick of that it’s going to cost a lot. You could add radiant orchid accents to a white kitchen and still get that splash in there.”
Poor layout and design waste
money so they’ll help audiences look at where to go high-end and where to save a nickel.
“If the design is done well, it can sell your home for you. If the update is poor, people might walk in and see the dollar signs,” McGeachy says. “You really need to plan well ahead, know well ahead.”
Many would think faux fur should be limited to toss cushions, but a chair, or perhaps even a larger piece (which could show up at the Expo) make a statement, and it’s a good one in 2014. After all, as Drury says, “faux fur is huge.”
The 29th annual Victoria Spring Home Expo runs April 25 to 27 in the three rinks at West Shore Parks and Recreation, 1767 Island Hwy. Friday runs 1 to 9 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission is $5.
