There are many ways to create a warm and inviting impression from the moment your family and friends fi rst approach your home. Curb appeal of a property is a very important part of your overall home design… However, let’s narrow our focus a bit and discuss one of the largest trends that I am continually seeing in the design world. Over the last few years, it has become important to add special attention and focus to the front door. There are so many creative ways to express yourself when it comes to your home’s entrance.

Some of the more costly options of adding appeal to the front door, whether a new home or an older home is adding a door with a beautiful wood grain, inserts of attractive glass or opting for a double door installation with a more grandeur feel. A solid wood door of fi r, cedar or oak can be stained or custom carved to add texture, interest and elegance to your home. They

often become more of an art piece, on display for all of the passersby. One of my signature design treatments when updating the exterior of a 40’s stucco and glass home is to replace the existing door with one of rich wood tones in a more contemporary style. This balances out the outdated, heavily textured facade until it is in the budget to redo the fi nish on the entire home. (Don’t forget a heavy, metal hardware set to accompany your new door.) Glass inserts, either in the door or full height panels beside the door are a great option to allow the fl ow of light into the interior of the foyer. Frosted glass retains the element of privacy, while still allowing for a light and airy feel to the space.

Painting a door can be one of the easiest ways to update the exterior of your home. It is currently very popular to apply a bright, funky colour to the door of an otherwise neutrally painted

house. I have recently had clients add a pop of colour and personality to their exterior door by trying fun solid colours like apple green, deep teal, vibrant yellow or a Mediterranean turquoise. There is very little commitment to this option, as it only takes a couple of layers of paint to cover the colour once you no longer love the colour. Painting a door black can instantly add an element of sophistication to your entry way. It draws the eye to your focal point and instantly makes for a much cleaner and crisper look.
