ABOUT THE MUSTARD SEED

For nearly 25 years, The Mustard Seed has worked to foster meaningful, lifelong change in the lives of Calgary's homeless. Together with our community, we care for the most essential and urgent needs of the homeless with food, clothing and shelter, while also providing the tools, training and community needed to help our guests rebuild broken lives and ultimately, realize the dream of a better future.

At The Mustard Seed, it is our sincere belief that it is the role of every citizen to care for one another. We are committed to remaining a Christian organization that responds compassionately to the inner city’s less fortunate through mobilizing and working with the church and the community. Every year The Mustard Seed sees over 10,000 volunteers come through our doors. The services these volunteers provide would take over 70 full time staff to accomplish. We firmly believe in the integration of volunteers into every level and department of the organization, and in truly connecting those who need help with those who can provide such.

Furthermore, we are constantly reaching beyond our physical and geographical boundaries to

provide care, services, training and support to others in our province, country and even around

the world. Our four ministry centres across Alberta allow us to carry out our mission of providing

compassionate care to the homeless. Please visit www.theseed.ca to become familiar with our

ministry centres and the services we provide.

We strive to be a trusted, competent organization addressing the issues of homelessness from multiple angles. Not only do we address the immediate needs of emergency shelter and food, but provide long term assistance and educational programs that will give our guests the help they need to make positive and permanent changes in their lives.

6 • The Mustard Seed

Lauren Eresman and Kayla Thompson are aspiring event planners and big fans of the popular dance–themed television show, So You Think You Can Dance. When they learned that The Mustard Seed was holding an event planning competition, they jumped at the opportunity.

Lauren and Kayla came up with the idea to hold a unique dance competition: So You Think You Can Dance for a Really Long Time. The event was held at Eau Claire Market

this summer and raised over $4000 to benefit The Mustard Seed.

Participants collected pledges for the time they were able to keep moving. Additionally, dance lessons and performances by Calgary dance troupes kept participants energized throughout the day. The event earned coverage from Vibe 98.5 and City TV.

The girls were happy to plan an event for such a worthwhile cause, and offer the following advice to other aspiring fundraisers:

“If you have a passion for the cause, then you’ll enjoy the time you put into seeing the event come to fruition.”

Each year it takes the creative efforts of thousands of volunteers like Kayla and Lauren to help keep our life–changing programs running. Do you have a great idea to support The Mustard Seed? We would love to hear from you. Contact us at 403–269–1319 or visit us at http://www.theseed.ca/Fundraising.html.

Lauren and Kayla raised over $4,000 in support of The Mustard Seed through their unique Dance-a-thon fundraiser.
