Safety information

General

Only use the power supply unitincluded with the product. Using anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone. The itemnumber for the power supply unit is 872264.

For the handset use only approvedrechargeable battery pack. Under no circumstances should non-rechargeable batteries be used. Using unapproved batteries willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone.

Radio signals transmitted betweenthe handset and base may causeinterference to some hearing aids.

Do not dismantle the handset or base station. This could expose youto high voltages or other risks.Contact the helpline for repairs.

Never dispose of batteries in a fire.There is a serious risk of explosionand/or the release of highly toxicchemicals.

Cleaning

Simply clean the handset and basestation with a damp (not wet) cloth,or an antistatic wipe. Never usehousehold polish as this will damagethe product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.

Environmental

Do not expose to direct sunlight.

The product may heat up when the batteries are being recharged. This is normal. However, to avoiddamage we recommend that you do not place the product onantique/veneered wood.

Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardousconditions.

There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by anelectrical storm. We recommendthat you unplug the power andtelephone line cord for the duration of the storm.

Setting upFollow these steps to set up your Freestyle 60 ready for use.

Plan the location

Situate your Freestyle 60 close enoughto the mains power socket and telephonesocket so that the cables will reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre awayfrom other electrical products to avoidinterference.

Do not situate the product in thebathroom or other humid areas.

Your Freestyle 60 works by sending andreceiving radio signals between the baseunit and the handset.

The strength of the signal depends onwhere you site the base unit and howthe aerial is deployed.

The higher the base unit is located, the better. An upstairs room is ideal.

2 Plug the power supplycord into the back of thebase unit

Your Freestyle 60 handset uses acompact aerial which we recommendyou pull out to obtain the best signaland reception available.

Note

Do not connect the telephone line cordto the phone socket until the handsetis fully charged. This will prevent therisk of the phone being answeredbefore the batteries are charged, whichmay prevent them from reachingmaximum capacity.

Note

When fully charged and in goodcondition, the handset will provide upto 7 hours talktime or 72 hoursstandby.

If the handset battery is running low,the light on the handset will flashevery 10-15 seconds.

If you are making a call and thehandset battery is running low youwill hear a warning tone every 10-15 seconds.

Place the handset on the base unit torecharge.

However, the charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will reduce withtime as they wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time of the handset.Eventually they will need to be replaced.New batteries can be obtained fromthe BT shop or from the Helpline.Please see page 18 for instructions on how to install a new battery pack.

To get the longest possible life fromyour battery, take the handset off thebase unit for a few hours each day.

4 Charge the handset

When you first use your Freestyle 60,the rechargeable battery in the handsetneeds charging for 24 hours.

Place the handset on the base unit,ensuring the contacts are touching. The red CHARGING light will come on.

The charging light will remainconstantly lit while the handset isplaced on the base unit, even when thehandset batteries are fully charged.

3 Connect the base unitpower supply to a powersocket

The power supply unit must remainplugged in all the time.

5 Plug the telephone linecord into the bottom ofthe base unit and plug theother end of the line cordinto the telephone wallsocket

Your Freestyle 60 is now ready for use.

Using your Freestyle 60

Making and receiving calls

To make an external call

Press the buttons in the ordershown:

Lift the handset off the baseunit.

Press the TALK button.

The POWER/IN USE light onthe base unit begins to flashand the light on the handsetcomes on.

Listen for the dialling tone.

Dial the number you want.

To end a call


Or

Replace the handset on thebase unit.

To receive a call

When the phone rings:

If your handset is on the baseunit, simply pick it up toanswer the call.

Or

If your handset is off the baseunit then the handset light willflash, press the TALK buttonto answer the call.

Note

The handset range is up to 250 metresfrom the base unit in ideal conditions.If you start to go out of range whileusing the phone, you will hearwarning beeps. Move closer to the baseunit. If you do not move back intorange your call may be disconnected.Your Freestyle 60 automatically scansthe available radio channels andselects the best quality reception to use.

Note

An Inductive Coupler has been builtinto the handset to improve soundquality for people using hearing aids.Switch your hearing aid to T andadjust the position of the handset untilyou get the best reception.

To redial the last numbercalled

Press the TALK button andwait for the dialling tone.

Press the REDIAL button. Thenumber is dialled automatically.

Last number redial

Your Freestyle 60 stores the last numbercalled which enables quick and easyredialling. A redial number can be nolonger than 32 digits.

Note

Your Freestyle 60 handset uses acompact aerial which can be pulledout to obtain the best signal andreception available.

To switch Secrecy on and off

During a call press andrelease the SECRECY button.

Your caller will be put on hold and both you and the caller will hear music until the SECRECY button ispressed again.

The handset light will flash.

You can now talk to someonein the room without yourcaller hearing you.

Press and release theSECRECY button again toreturn to your caller.


When on a call you can talk tosomeone in the same room, withoutyour caller hearing.

Note

There is a directory label included onthe reverse side of your handset. You can use this to keep a record of whichlocation number you have used foreach telephone number.

Remove the battery cover by pressingdown on top of the lid and slide thecover off.

To remove the directory label from thebattery cover lid, push up the directorylabel with your thumb as shown.

Note

Storing a number in the directoryautomatically overwrites any previousnumber stored under the samelocation code.

Stored numbers can includeswitchboard and network services thatuse the ✱ and # buttons as well asPAUSE and RECALL functions.

To enter a pause in a directory numberpress the REDIAL button.

Directory

You can store ten of your mostfrequently used telephone numbers inthe directory. Please note that thenumbers can be no longer than 20digits long.

Note

You can mix manual and memorydialling as required, for example, you candial the area code 020 8304 from thedirectory and then complete thenumber manually.

To store a number in thedirectory

Press the DIRECTORY button.

Enter the location numberbetween 0 and 9, under whichyou want to store the number.

Enter the telephone numberyou want to store.

Press the DIRECTORY buttonto confirm.

You will hear a confirmationtone.

Enter the location numberbetween 0 and 9, under whichthe number is stored.

The number is dialledautomatically.

To delete stored numbers

Any existing number stored in the directory can beoverwritten by entering a new number under the samelocation. Simply follow thesteps under the storing numberssections previously shown.

To page the handset

Press the PAGE button on thebase unit.

The handset will ring.

Paging

Base ringer volume

You can page the handset from thebase unit to alert a handset user thatthey are wanted or to locate a missinghandset. However, paging calls cannotbe answered by a handset.

To adjust the base ringervolume

There are 3 levels to choosefrom, HIGH, LOW and OFF.

1=HIGH; 2=LOW and 3=OFF.The default setting is HIGH.


Press the # button.

Enter the setting you want, 1-3.

Press the DIRECTORY buttonto confirm the setting.


You will also hear a samplering of the base ringer at levels1 and 2.

To use Call Waiting

You can answer the second call,without disconnecting yourfirst caller, by pressing the Rbutton. The first caller will beput on hold.

When you have spoken to thesecond caller you can returnto the first caller by pressingthe R button again. You canswitch back and forth betweenthe 2 calls without disconnectingeither if you wish.

If you wish to disconnect thefirst call, press the TALKbutton after speaking to thefirst caller.

The handset will then ring.Press the TALK button againand continue with the secondcaller.

The second caller will only becharged for their call from themoment you answer and notwhile they are waiting for your

You can stop paging at any timeby pressing the PAGE buttonon the base unit or any buttonson the handset.

Pressing the TALK button willnot only stop the paging butalso seize the line. Press theTALK button a second time toclear the line.

Paging will continue to ring for approximately one minute.If the paging is not answeredafter this time your handsetwill return to standby.

Note

You cannot page the handset while itis being used on a call. An incomingcall will override a page call and thehandset will ring as normal.

If additional handsets are registeredto the Freestyle 60 base unit then allhandsets will ring when paged.

(this beep is not audible to the personyou are speaking to).

Instead of the engaged tone, the secondcaller will hear an announcement tohold as you are aware that there is asecond call.

If an incoming call arrives while you arealready engaged on a telephone call, youwill hear a soft beep every 5 seconds

To use Call Waiting you will need tosubscribe to the Service from yournetwork provider. A quarterly fee ispayable.

Using Freestyle 6Additional Handsets

You can buy and use up to threeFreestyle 6 additional handsets (or Quartet 1000 additional handsets)with your Freestyle 60 to extend yourphone system, without needing to installextension sockets for each new phone.Please note that Quartet 1000 handsetsare compatible with your Freestyle 60but the Quartet 1000 has more advancedfeatures. For more information onQuartet 1000 additional handsets pleaserefer to the Quartet 1000 user guide.

Each additional handset is supplied withits own charger and user instructions,but the following information will tellyou how to register and use an additionalhandset with your Freestyle 60.

Registering your handset

You must register your Freestyle 6additional handset before it can be usedwith your Freestyle 60 base unit.

Note

You must charge your additionalhandset for 24 hours beforeregistering it.

Note

Once your Freestyle 6 handset has beenregistered to your base unit it cannot be re-registered to another base unit.

To register an additionalhandset

Please ensure you have onlythe handset you wish toregister ready when followingthe instructions below.

Press and hold the base unitPAGE button for 5 seconds untilboth the POWER/IN USElight on the base unit and thelight on the handset begin toflash.

Release the PAGE button andpress the TALK button on theadditional handset that youwish to register.

Note

Check that your additional handset is registered correctly by pressing theTALK button. The talk light shouldremain constantly lit and you willhear a dial tone. If you do not hear a dial tone your additional handset is either out of range of the base unitor it has not been registered properly,or the base unit line cord is notplugged in.

Note

Make a note of the handset number bywriting it on the directory label on theback of the additional handset.

Your additional handset isregistered automatically and youwill hear a long confirmationbeep and the light will stopflashing.

Each additional handset mustbe assigned an identitynumber (2, 3 or 4) to be usedwhen transferring calls. YourFreestyle 60 handset is alreadyregistered as HANDSET 1. AFreestyle 6 additional handsetis pre-set as HANDSET 2.However, further additionalhandsets can be numbered asthey are added.


Press the SECRECY button.

Enter the handset numberbetween (2 and 4).

To set the handset number

To transfer a call

Press the DIRECTORYbutton. You will hear a beepconfirming that the newnumber has been stored.

Transferring calls

You can transfer calls between handsetsthat are registered to the base unit.

During your call press theSECRECY button and then thehandset number that you wantto transfer the call to.

The called handset will ring.

Press the TALK button on theringing handset to speak tothe caller.

If the call is not answeredwithin 30 seconds the originalcalling handset will ring.

If after a further 30 secondsthe call is not taken the callerwill be disconnected.

General information

Guarantee

Your Freestyle 60 is guaranteed for aperiod of 12 months from the date ofpurchase. Subject to the terms listedbelow the guarantee will provide for therepair of, or at BT’s or its agent’sdiscretion, the option to replace theFreestyle 60 or any component thereof,(other than batteries), which isidentified as faulty or below standard,or as a result of inferior workmanshipor materials. Products over 28 days oldfrom the date of purchase may bereplaced with a refurbished product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:• The guarantee shall only apply to

defects that occur within the 12 month guarantee period.

• Proof of purchase is provided.• The equipment is returned to BT or

its agent as instructed.• This guarantee does not cover any

faults or defects caused by accidents,misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect,tampering with the equipment, or anyattempt at adjustment or repair otherthan through approved agents.

• This guarantee does not affect yourstatutory rights.

Within the 12 month guarantee period:

Prior to returning your product, pleaseread the Help section beginning onpage 21 or contact the Helpline on 0845769 7146 for assistance. In the unlikelyevent of a defect occurring, pleasefollow the Helpline’s instructions forreplacement or repair.

Outside of the 12 month guarantee period:

If your product needs repair after theguarantee period has ended, the repairmust meet the approval requirementsfor connection to the telephonenetwork. We recommend that youcontact BT’s approved repair agentTecLogic on 01672 564444 or a localqualified repairer.

If you have to return your product

Prior to returning your product, pleaseread the Help section on page 21, orcontact the Helpline on 0845 769 7146for assistance. If you still feel you haveto return your product, pack the basestation and handset securely, preferablyin the original packaging. All parts mustbe returned, including line cords, powersupplies and original batteries. (Pleasenote that we can not take responsibilityfor goods damaged in transit).

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected to anyone telephone line. Your Freestyle 60has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 isallowed. If the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephones may not ring.With different telephone types there isno guarantee of ringing, even when theREN is less than 4.

Remove the battery cover bypressing down on top of the lidand slide the cover off.

Unplug the connector andremove the old battery pack.

Plug the new battery packconnector in and lower thebattery pack into recess thenreplace lid.

To replace the battery pack

Batteries

Although the battery pack isrechargeable it will eventually needto be replaced, see below for details onhow to replace the battery pack.

Call security

Your Freestyle 60 has its own digitalsecurity code that prevents othercordless phone owners from using yourphone line. This ensures that you arecharged only for calls using your phone.However, all approved cordless phonesuse radio signals to communicatebetween the base unit and cordlesshandset units. It is therefore possible that

your conversations could be overheardby other people, on their cordlessphones, or on ordinary radios that usethe same radio frequencies.As this problem applies equally to allsimilar cordless phones currentlyavailable in the UK, call privacy cannotbe guaranteed. However, the securitycoding prevents unauthorised use ofyour line.

Switchboard compatibility

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards, which support tone andpulse dialling and timed break recall. If in doubt please consult your serviceprovider.

To insert a pause in thememory

With some switchboards, afterdialling the access code youmay have to wait for a momentwhile the switchboard picks upan outside line.

If so, press the REDIAL buttonto insert a pause beforeentering the telephone number.

To use the recall facility

You may need to use the recallfunction if you are connectedto a switchboard/PBX (PrivateBranch Exchange), contactyour PBX supplier for furtherinformation. The recallfunction is set to timed breakrecall and is also used for BT Select Services.

Help and adviceIf you have any problems using your Freestyle 60, this section willgive you the most common, easy to follow solutions.

Telephone problems Possible cause Solution

• No dialling tone.

• Telephone will not dial out or cannot receive calls.

• Handset does not ring and nolight on handset.

Telephone not connected totelephone line.

Mains disconnected.

Power cut.

Handset battery pack is discharged.

Handset not registered.

Plug the telephone into thetelephone line.

Ensure the power supply is correctlyconnected and switched on.

Wait until the power is restored.Replace handset on base unit for 10seconds and try again. If this doesnot work, disconnect the handsetbattery from the handset for 10minutes. Also disconnect the mainspower.

Then reconnect the base unit to themains, then replace the handset onthe base unit for 10 seconds and tryagain.

Place the handset on the base unit and recharge it for 24 hoursensuring the CHARGING light is on.

Register the handset, see page 15.

• You have dialling tone but thetelephone will not dial out.

You may be trying to use tone diallingon a pulse dialling exchange.

You are connected to a PBX and arenot dialling the access code.

See page 19 to change to pulsedialling.

• Base unit does not ring butlights show on base unit.

Telephone is not connected to thetelephone line.

The base ringer is set to off.

Line fault or faulty socket.

Plug the telephone into the telephonesocket.

Set the base ringer setting to ahigher volume, see page 13.

Try the telephone on another socketor another line. If the telephoneworks, contact BT on 151, or yourtelephone network operator forrepairs to the line or socket.

• Callers are faint.• Interference.• Buzzing.

• Tinniness.

You are moving out of range.

The base unit or the handset are too close to electrical equipment ormetal obstructions.

Move closer to the base unit.

Relocate the base unit or movearound with the handset untilreception improves.

• Call appears to have been cutoff after pressing the SECRECYbutton.

You may have pressed a number keyon the handset after pressing theSECRECY button. The currenthandset will try to transfer the call toanother handset.

Wait 30 seconds; the call will returnto the current handset. Or press the TALK button and thecall will return immediately.

• No Directory number stored.

You may have pressed the TALKbutton first before storing the number.

Don’t press the TALK button whenstoring numbers, see page 12.

• Light on the handsetis flashing.

The handset needs recharging orthere is an incoming call.

Replace the handset on the base unit,ensuring that the base unit isplugged in and that the CHARGINGlight is on.

• No CHARGING light on thebase unit.

Dirty contacts on base unit orhandset.

Clean the contacts with a dry cloth.Heavy soiling can be removed with a pencil eraser.

Wall mounting

For the best operating conditions,try to place the base unit away fromlarge metal objects and otherelectrical appliances.

Drill 2 holes for the screws and insertthe wall-plugs provided (if required).

Drive the screws into the wall, leavingabout 4mm free on which to mountthe bracket and base unit.

Make sure that the power supply andthe telephone cables are connectedto the base unit, then fit the cablesinto the channels on the bottom of thebase unit.

Attach the base unit by hooking it overthe screws protruding from the wall.

Your Freestyle 60 can be wall-mountedby removing the desk bracket.

To remove, just squeeze the bracket inwith thumbs and lift off as shown.

Note

Before you wall-mount your Freestyle 60, check that:

• the wall can support the weight ofthe base unit and handset;

• you are not drilling into any hiddenwiring;

• the power supply cable will reachfrom the mains power socket to yourwall mounting position;

• the position you choose leaves enoughspace so that the base unit is clearof any obstruction on the wall, suchas a shelf or cupboard. Room shouldbe left so that the handset can beplaced on charge without touchingany obstructions.
