Message Waiting indicator

Used to time the duration of a call.

Recall

Redial

Redials the last number.Repeat dials a number when the line isengaged. Also lets you enter a Pause in a storednumber.

Switches the calculator on and off.

Navigator Wheel

Quick access to the directory. Adjusts thevolume of the caller’s voice. Displays range of calculator functions.

(Tick Button) Select

Dials telephone numbers displayed on thescreen.Also confirms options displayed on thescreen in the directory and used to storeentries in the directory and selectscalculator functions.

Directory

Lets you store up to 75 names and numbersincluding pre-set BT Select Services:- 1471 Call Return, Call Diversion, Reminder Call and 1571 – Call Minder/BT Answer.

Headset (and light) button

Used when there is a headsetconnected.

Display

Shows 24 hour clock, battery lowindicator, phone numbers, and names.

Call indicator light

Flashes to indicate you have anincoming call.

Handset park

When the phone is wall mounted you can hang the handset here if you need to

leave the phone during a call.

Next

Inserts a space in a number when storingnumbers in the memory.

Clear

Used to edit numbers when pre-dialling or when storing or editing numbers in

the memory.

Handset hook

Rotates to hold the handset in place when wall mounted.

Volume

Used with the Navigator wheel to adjust the volume of the dial tone and your

caller’s voice.

Secrecy button (and light)

Allows you to talk to someone in thesame room without your caller being able

to hear the conversation.

Handsfree button (and light)

Allows you to talk to callers without liftingthe handset.

Hearing aid compatible

Your Converse handsetis hearing aidcompatible.

GeneralSimply clean your Converse 425 with a damp(not wet) cloth, or an antistatic wipe.

Never use household polish as this may damage the product.

Never use a dry cloth as this may cause static shock.

Do not open the Converse 425. This couldexpose you to high voltages or other risks.

Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is a serious risk of explosion and/or the release of highly toxic chemicals.

EnvironmentalDo not expose to direct sunlight.

We recommend that you do not place the producton antique/veneered wood to avoid damage.

Do not stand your product on carpets or othersurfaces which generate fibres, or place it in locationspreventing free flow of air over its surfaces.

Do not submerge any part of your product in waterand do not use it in damp or humid conditions,such as in bathrooms.

Do not expose your product to fire, explosive orother hazardous conditions.

1 Install the batteries

The display on your Converse 425 ispowered by 3 x AAA alkaline batteries.

Make sure the phone is not pluggedinto the phone socket. Open the batterycompartment cover.

Insert batteries as shown.

Close the lid and replace thecompartment cover.

Plan the location

Situate your Converse 425 closeenough to a phone socket so that theline cord will reach.

Your Converse 425 can be wall-mounted.See ‘Wall-mounting’, on page 20.

3 Check the dialling mode

Your Converse 425 should be pre-set toT-TB which gives you TONE dialling.

This ensures the phone will work withall modern digital exchanges.

If your phone does not work when youdial a number, try setting the diallingmode to T or P.

Note

When your batteries are within abouttwo weeks of total exhaustion, BATTLOW will appear in the display. If youdo not replace the batteries and they become totally discharged yourConverse 425 will not display anythingon the screen.

4 Set the time

Press and hold the Clockbutton until the display showsTIME.

Release the Clock button.Display shows 00-00.

Enter the current time usingthe 24 hour clock, eg. 0 9 3 0 = 9.30am, 1 5 3 0 = 3.30pm.

Press the ✔ button.

The time is set and displayed.

Your Converse 425 is now ready for use.

To make a call

Lift the handset off the baseand wait for the dial tone.

Dial the telephone number.

The display will show thenumber dialled.

Or

Preparatory dialling.

Without lifting the handset,dial the telephone number you want. The number isdisplayed.

Press the ✔ button.

The displayed number isdialled in ‘handsfree’ mode.

To end a call

Replace the handset.

To receive a call

When the telephone rings, theCall indicator light will flash toindicate that there is anincoming call. Simply pick upthe handset.

There are three ways to make a callon your Converse 425: by lifting thehandset, using the Handsfree buttonor by using the ✔ button.

Hearing Aid Compatibility

As this telephone is fitted with anInductive Coupler, Hearing Aidwearers may benefit from switchingtheir hearing aid to the middle Tposition and holding the earpiece upto the aid, not their ear.

Using a headset

Plug the headset into thesocket marked HEADSET onthe underside of the base.

To make a call, press theHeadset button.

Dial the telephone number.

To end the call, press theHeadset button.

Note

Converse headsets (RJ11 jack)are available separately from BT shops or by calling0870 240 5522.

Secrecy

When on a call you can talk to someonein the same room, without your callerhearing.

To switch Secrecy on and off

During a call, press and releasethe Secrecy button.

The red Secrecy light willcome on. Your caller cannothear you.

To resume your conversation,press and release the Secrecybutton again. The Secrecylight will go off.

To set the call timer

You can time the duration ofeach call.

During a call, press the Clockbutton. The time of theprevious call will be displayed.

Press the Clock button againto start the timer. You can stopthe time by pressing the Clockbutton once more.

When you replace the handsetor press the Handsfree buttonto end the call, the display showsthe final duration of the call fora few seconds before returningto the normal clock setting.

To redial the last number called

Press the Handsfree button.

Press the Redial button.

The last number you called isredialled.

Last number redial

Your Converse 425 stores the lastnumber called which enables quick andeasy redialling. A redial number can beno longer than 32 digits.

Handsfree talking

The handsfree feature allows you tomake and receive calls without liftingthe handset.

To make a handsfree call

Press the Handsfree button.

You will hear the dial tone.

Dial the telephone number.The number will be shown onthe display.

When your call is answeredyou can either speak inhandsfree mode or pick up thehandset if you wish to speak toyour caller privately.

Note

To cancel repeat dial before your callis answered, lift the handset or pressthe Handsfree button or press theHeadset button.

To repeat dial a number

If the number you call isengaged, you can set yourConverse 425 to dial a numberrepeatedly, saving you fromcontinually having to press the Redial button.

When you hear the engagedtone, press the Redial buttonand replace the handset (orpress the Handsfree button).

The display shows BUSY.

10 seconds after the handset is replaced, your Converse 425automatically picks up the line,switches on the loudspeakerand redials the number.

If it is still engaged, you needdo nothing, your phone will waitfor 45 seconds before repeatingthe procedure.

This will be repeated every 45 seconds up to a maximumof 15 times or until the call isanswered.

When your call is answered,you can speak to your caller bypressing Handsfree or lift thehandset or press the Headsetbutton and speak.

Note

This feature works in handset,handsfree and headset modes.

To receive a call in handsfree mode

When the phone rings, pressthe Handsfree button and speakto answer the call.

To adjust the ringer tone

The ringer tone can be set toHigh or Low.

Use the ringer tone switch onthe underside of yourConverse 425 to set the ringertone you want: R1 for LOW orR2 for HIGH.

To adjust your caller’s speech volume

During a call, you can adjust thevolume of your caller’s voice.

Press the Volume button.

The display shows VOLUME andthe current volume level. Turn the Navigator Wheelclockwise to increase thevolume or anti-clockwise todecrease it.

Directory

You can store 75 names and numbersin the directory. Please note that storednumbers can be no longer than 21 digits.

You can use the Navigator Wheel – orthe keypad – to enter names andnumbers. The Navigator Wheel alsolets you scroll quickly through storednames and numbers.

Directory entries are automaticallystored in alphabetical order. Numberswithout attached names are stored atthe beginning of the list.

Note

The call indicator light will flashregardless of the ringer setting chosen.

Message Waiting indicator

When you have Voice Mailmessages, the Message Waitingindicator flashes at regularintervals.

To adjust the ringer volume

There are 3 volume settings tochoose from: HI, LOW or OFF.

Use the ringer volume switchon the underside of yourConverse 425 to set the volumeyou want: HI, LOW or OFF.

Note

This feature works with compatibleswitchboards only.

Press and hold the ✔ buttonuntil the display shows STOREand EDIT.

You can now enter anothername and number.

Note

You can stop during any setof steps and return tostandby by lifting the handsetor pressing the Handsfreebutton.

To edit an entry in thedirectory

Press and hold the Directorybutton. Display shows STOREand EDIT.

Release the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel sothat EDIT is flashing.

Press the ✔ button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel todisplay the entry you want tochange.

Press the ✔ button. The cursorflashes under the first digit ofthe number. If you need to movethe cursor, either press the ✔ button or the Next � buttonto go forward or the � Clearbutton to delete a digit.

To store a name and number in the directory

Press and hold the Directorybutton. Display shows STOREand EDIT.

STORE will be flashing.

Release the Directory button.

Press the ✔ button.

Display shows the number ofentries stored in the directory,followed by ENTER NUMBER.

Enter the number you wantusing the keypad. Alternatively,turn the Navigator Wheel untilthe digit you want is displayedthen press the ✔ button.Repeat this step until the fulltelephone number is entered.

Press and hold the ✔ buttonuntil the display shows ENTER NAME.

Note

If you try to add a new entryand the directory is full, thedisplay shows MEMORY FULL.

To continue, follow stepsshown in ‘To edit an entry inthe directory’ or ‘To delete anentry in the directory’.

To delete an entry from thedirectory

Press the Directory button toview your entries. Select theentry you want to delete andpress the Clear button twice.

To view and dial a numberfrom the directory

You can view all the namesand numbers stored in yourdirectory

Press the Directory button(your handset does not needto be in the cradle).

Turn the Navigator Wheel todisplay the entries.

Or

Press the alphabet letters onthe keypad to go directly to an entry, i.e. press the 2 button3 times to display entriesbeginning with C.

Press the ✔ button when thenumber you want is displayed.The phone switches tohandsfree and dials the number.

Enter the new digit above the flashing cursor using thekeypad or by turning theNavigator Wheel.

Press the ✔ button.

When you have finishedchanging the number pressand hold the ✔ button untilthe display shows the cursorflashing under the first letterof the name.

Enter the new letter above the flashing cursor using thekeypad or by turning theNavigator Wheel.

Press the ✔ button.

When you have finishedchanging the name press andhold the ✔ button until thedisplay returns to STORE andEDIT. You can now changeanother entry.

To clear a calculation

Turn the Navigator Wheel todisplay AC.

Press the ✔ button.

To switch off the calculator

Press the Calculator button.

The calculator will also switchoff automatically if no button ispressed for 1 minute.

To use the calculator

Press the Calculator button.The display changes to thecalculator function.

Enter the number you want,i.e. 123.

Turn the Navigator Wheelto display the function, i.e. +.

Press the ✔ button.

Enter the second number, i.e. 74.

Turn the Navigator Wheel todisplay the function =.

Press the ✔ button.

Display shows the result 197.

To store a pause in a storednumber

A pause is sometimes requiredwith some switchboards andNetwork Services.

A pause simply gives theswitchboard a few seconds topick up the outside line beforedialling. Using the Redialbutton, you can insert a pausewhen you store a number inthe directory.

Repeat the steps for storing anumber in the directory butpress the Redial button whereyou want to add a pause withinthe number.

Using the calculator

Your Converse 425 provides all thebasic calculator functions – addition,subtraction, multiplication, division andpercentages as well as Memory Recall.

+, --, X, /, =, %, AC, M-, M+ andMRC.

If the phone rings while you are usingthe calculator function, simply lift thereceiver or press the Handsfree buttonas normal. Note that informationentered in calculator mode will be lost.

Recall button

The Recall button is for usewith switchboard services, e.g. to transfer calls and someBT Select Services.

Five minutes memory back-up

If you unplug your Converse425 from the telephone socketand it has fully chargedbatteries, it will keep all thenumbers you have stored inthe memory. However, if youunplug your Converse 425 andyour batteries are totallydischarged, numbers stored inthe memory will be maintainedfor about 5 minutes.

Pre-programmed BT SelectServices numbers will not beaffected.

Data Port

A socket has been provided on thetelephone stand to allow easy connectionof another product (typically a modemor Caller Display unit). Plug the otherproduct into the socket marked DATAas shown below.

To use the MRC function

Your calculator provides aMemory Recall (MRC)function. This enables you toput calculations in the memory while you make othercalculations, and then addthem together or subtract onefrom the other.

For example:

Press the Calculator button.

The display changes to thecalculator function.

Enter the number you want,i.e. 50.

Turn the Navigator Wheel todisplay the function M+.

Press the ✔ button.

Enter the second number, i.e. 20.

Navigator Wheel still displaysthe function M+.

Press the ✔ button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toMRC.

Press the ✔ button.

Display shows the total onmemory 70.

Note

If your Converse 425 is connected to aswitchboard, you must first switch offthe calculator before transferring a call.

Using BT Select Services

Note

A switchboard can provide a similarrange of functions to BT Select Services.If your Converse 425 is connected to a switchboard, you can simply use it as a normal extension.

Your Converse 425 gives you easyaccess to the following range of BTSelect Services. Six of the Directoryentries have been pre-programmed.

You can replace the pre-set numberswith your own numbers, if you wish.Simply follow the steps shown in ‘To edit an entry in the directory’, on page 11.

1471 Call Return

Call Return tells you the number of thelast person who called you and the timeand date the call was received.

To access 1471

Press the Handsfree button orlift the handset.

Press the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toselect 1471 CALL RETURN.

Press the ✔ button to dial thenumber.

The 1471 CALL RETURN

information is announced.

1571 – Call Minder/BT Answer

1571 allows you access to network basedanswering services that take calls whenyou do not answer your phone or if youare already on the line.

These services may providepersonalised greetings and/or the timeand date of each message. You canaccess your messages from any phonewith a touchtone keypad.

Details on how to use these servicesare provided when you subscribe.

To ring your 1571 service

Press the Handsfree button.

Press the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toselect 1571 CALL MINDER.

Press the ✔ button to dial thenumber.

Follow the voice prompts toplay back, save, delete and skipforward through yourmessages.

Call Diversion

You can use your Converse 425 torequest the network to divert incomingcalls to another number.

To switch Call Diversion on

Press the Handsfree button orlift the handset.

Press the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toselect ✱ 21✱ DIVERT ON.

Press the ✔ button to dial thenumber.

Enter the number to whichyou would like your callsdiverted.

Press the # button and listenfor confirmation of yourinstructions.

Other services

Three Way CallingLets you speak to 2 other callers at thesame time.

Charge AdviceInstantly tells you the cost of your last call.

Call WaitingDuring a call, a discreet ‘beep’ lets youknow another person is trying to getthrough. You can put your original caller‘on hold’ and switch to the new caller.

Note

For information on these and manyother valuable services, call BT on152. If you are not connected to theBT Network, ask your NetworkProvider for information about theirservices.

To re-set BT Select Servicesbuttons

If you have stored your ownnumbers over BT SelectServices you can re-set themto the original BT numbers.

Follow the steps in ‘To edit anentry in the directory’ and re-enter the Select Service Codessee page 11.

To cancel a Reminder Call

Press the Handsfree button orlift the handset.

Press the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toselect #55# REMINDER OFF.

Press the ✔ button to dial thenumber.

Listen for confirmation.

Reminder Call

You can turn your Converse 425 into a 24-hour alarm clock that rings you backat the exact time you specify.

To set a Reminder Call

Press the Handsfree button orlift the handset.

Press the Directory button.

Turn the Navigator Wheel toselect ✱ 55✱ REMINDER SET.

Press the ✔ button to dial thenumber.

Enter the time you want to becalled back, using the 24-hourclock, e.g. 1 6 3 0 books aReminder Call at 4.30 pm.

Press the # button and listenfor confirmation.

Press the Handsfree button.

Guarantee

Your Converse 425 is guaranteed for aperiod of 12 months from the date ofpurchase.

Subject to the terms listed below theguarantee will provide for the repair of,or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion theoption to replace the Converse 425, orany component thereof, which isidentified as faulty or below standard, orfails as a result of inferior workmanshipor materials. Products over 28 days oldfrom the date of purchase may bereplaced with a refurbished product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:

• The guarantee shall only apply todefects that occur within the 12 monthguarantee period.

• Proof of purchase is provided.

• The equipment is returned to thepoint of purchase.

• This guarantee does not cover anyfaults or defects caused by accidents,misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect,tampering with the equipment, or anyattempt at adjustment or repair otherthan by approved agents.

• This guarantee does not affect yourstatutory rights.

Within the 12 month guaranteeperiod:

In the unlikely event of a defectoccurring, please return the product,with the receipt, to the place of purchase.

Outside of the 12 month guaranteeperiod:

If your product needs repair after theguarantee period has ended, the repairmust meet the approval requirementsfor connection to the telephonenetwork. We recommend that youcontact BT’s approved repair agent,TecLogic on 01672 564444 or a localqualified repairer.

If you have to return your Converse 425

Pack the unit securely, preferably in theoriginal packaging. All parts must bereturned. We cannot take responsibilityfor goods damaged in transit.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected toany one telephone line. Your Converse425 has a REN of 1.5. A total REN of 4is allowed, if the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephones may not ring.With different telephone types there isno guarantee of ringing, even when theREN is less than 4.

Switchboard compatibility

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards, which support tone orpulse dialling with earth or time breakrecall. If in doubt please consult yourservice provider.

R&TTE Directive

Hereby, TMX, declares that thisConverse 425 is in compliance with theessential requirements and other relevantprovisions of Directive 1999/5/EC.

Wall-mounting

1 Unplug and remove the telephoneline cord from the socket on the stand.

2 Unclip the line plug from thetelephone base.

3 Unclip the stand from the base ofthe telephone and remove the stand.

4 Reconnect the telephone line to theline socket on the base of the phone.

5 Drill two holes in the wall 60mmvertically apart using an 8mm drill bit.

6 Insert the wall plugs if necessary,then insert the screws leaving about8mm protruding from the wall onwhich to hang the phone.

7 Rotate the handset clip 180˚ so thatit protrudes upward. This holds thehandset in place when wall-mounted.

8 Hang the holes on the back of thephone over the screwheads andgently pull the phone downward tomake sure it is securely in place.

9 Hang the handset on the handset clip.

If you need to leave the phone whilst ona call you can hang the handset on thepark at the top right hand corner of the product.
