You need to place your Decor 425 close enough to the phone and mains power sockets so that both cordswill reach.

Setting up the phone

1. Plug the power adaptor into the left side of your Decor 425.

2. Route the power cord through the groove as shown below.

3. Plug the adaptor into the mains power and switch on.You will hear, “Answer on, calls will be answered after six rings”.

4. Set the answering machine clock

A. Press and hold until the current day is announced.

B. Use and to scroll through the days.

C. When you hear the correct day, press . The currenthour is announced.

D. Use and to select the correct hour.

E. When you hear the correct hour, press . The current minute is announced.

F. Use and to select the correct minute.

G. When you hear the correct minute, press .The clock is now set and the current day and time areannounced.

5 Set the ringer switch. Position the ringer switch on the base to On or Off.

Ringer On – The phone rings when you receive anincoming call.

Ringer Off – The phone does not ring when you receivean incoming call.

Your Decor 425 uses the 24-hourclock - 13 is 1pm, 14 is 2pm andso on.

If there is a power failure you willneed to reset the day and time.

Making and receiving calls

1. Lift the handset, listen for the dial tone, then dial thenumber.

End a call

1. Replace the handset.

Receiving calls

When your phone rings:

1. Lift the handset to take the call.

Redial

1. Lift the handset.

2. Press .

The last number called is dialled.

If the last number dialled exceeds32 digits it will not be held in theredial memory

If the ringer switch is set to RingerOff (see page 7), the phone will notring when you receive a call.

When storing numbers in thememory you will not hearconfirmation beeps as you pressthe keypad buttons.

When storing numbers you will stillhear the dial tone and may hearrecorded messages from thetelephone exchange. Please ignorethis, it does not affect storingnumbers.

Use the directory label to make anote of the numbers you havestored in the memory.

To insert a pause when storing a numberWhen storing a number, press(Redial) where you want to enter apause.

Secrecy

During a call, you can talk to someone nearby withoutyour caller hearing you.

1. Press and hold . Your caller cannot hear you.

2. Release to talk to your caller again.

Storing memory numbers

Up to 10 phone numbers can be stored in the memory.Each number can be up to 16 digits long.

1. Lift the handset. You will hear the dialling tone.

2. Press .

3. Enter the phone number you want to store.

4. Press again.

5. Press a number between - on the keypad whereyou want to store the phone number.

The number is stored and you can replace the handset.

Changing stored numbers

Repeat the steps for storing a number. The new numberwill replace the existing stored number.

Dialling a memory number

1. Lift the handset.

2. Press .

3. Press the button - where the number is stored.

The number is dialled.

Storing your best friend number

Your most frequently used number can be stored underthe best friend button.

1. Lift the handset.

2. Press .

3. Enter the phone number you want to store.

4. Press again.

5. Press .

The number is stored and you can replace the handset.

Dialling your best friend number

1. Lift the handset.

2. Press .

The number is dialled.

Changing your best friend number

Repeat the steps for storing the number. The newnumber will replace the existing stored number.

OGM – Outgoing Message.

Switching on and off

Your Decor 425 is pre-set to record messages (Answer ON).

1. Press to switch off.

You will hear “Answer off”.

Or

1. Press to switch on.

You will hear “Answer on” and your current outgoingmessage will be announced.

Adjusting the loudspeaker volume

1. Use button to increase or decrease the loudspeakervolume.

Outgoing message

The outgoing message is the message a caller hearswhen your BT Decor 425 answers a call.

There are two pre-recorded outgoing messages that you can choose from, outgoing message 1 allows callersto leave a message, whilst outgoing message 2 does not.

OGM1 (Answer and record) – pre-recorded message

“Hello. Your call cannot be taken at the moment, so please leave yourmessage after the tone”.

OGM2 (Answer only) – pre-recorded message

“Hello. Your call cannot be taken at the moment and you cannot leavea message, so please call later”.

Use either of these OGMs, or if you prefer you can record your own,see opposite.

OGM2 is ‘Answer only’ so yourmessage should not invite callersto leave a message.

Selecting the OGM

1. Press and hold . You will hear “Please select outgoing message”.

2. Press for OGM1 (Answer and Record) or forOGM2 (Answer only). The selected OGM is played back and instructions aregiven on how to record a new outgoing message.

Recording your own OGM1 (Answer and Record)

Your OGM can be up to 3 minutes long.

1. Press and hold .

You will hear “Please select outgoing message”.

2. Press to re-record OGM1 (Answer and Record)

The current OGM is played back to you. You are then invited to record your own OGM.

3. Press and hold to begin recording.

4. After the beep, speak your message clearly about15–30cm from the microphone.

5. Release to end recording.

Your OGM is played back to you.

Deleting your OGM

1. Press and hold . When you hear “Please select outgoingmessage” release the button.

2. Press to delete OGM1.

Or

Press to delete OGM2.

The chosen OGM begins to play.

3. During playback press .

Your Decor 425 plays back the default pre-recordedOGM.

Indefinite message back-up

Your Decor 425 saves all messages indefinitely until you delete them. Your messages will not be lost in theevent of a power cut.

Memory full

If the answering machine memory becomes full themessage indicator will flash rapidly. You will not be able to record any more caller’s messages, a new OGM or memos. The BT Decor 425 will announcememory full.

Your Decor 425 will stop recording if:

• A caller pauses for more than 4seconds when leaving a message.

• The memory becomes full duringrecording.

• The incoming message lastslonger than 3 minutes.

What is Time Saver?If you access your answeringmachine remotely and you have setTime Saver mode, your Decor 425will answer calls after 6 rings if nonew messages have been recorded,or 2 rings if new messages havebeen recorded. So, you can hang-up after 2 rings knowing youhave no new messages and savethe cost of the call.

See page 23 for more informationon remote access.

If any of these functions are tried while the memory isfull, your Decor 425 will announce “Memory full”.

To clear space in the memory you will need to deletesome or all of the messages. See ‘To delete individualmessages’, on page 21.

Answer delay

The answer delay is the number of times your Decor 425rings before answering calls.

It is pre-set to 6 rings. You can choose from between 2 and 9 rings or Time Saver.

1. Press and hold . You hear the settings.

2. Release when you hear the setting you want You will hear the new setting confirmed.

Memos

You can record memos to be played back by another userof your Decor 425.

Memos are stored on the answering machine like caller’smessages and can be up to 12 minutes long (maximumrecording time).

1. Press and hold .

You will hear “Please speak after the tone. To endrecording, release the button”.

2. Still holding speak your memo clearly into themicrophone.

3. To end recording release the button.

Message indicator

When you have new messages the message indicator will flash.

The LED will flash when any messages are received,regardless of whether they have been listened to.

The light is on permanently when the answering machineis on and there are no messages received.

The light is off only when the answering machine is off.

Playing messages and memos

1. Press .

The number of stored messages is announced.

Your messages and memos are then played back in theorder they were received together with the day and timeof recording.

While your messages are being played back:

Press once to replay the current message

Press twice to return to the previous message.

Press to skip forward to the next message.

Press to stop playback.

When you reach the last message you will hear, “End of messages. To delete all messages, press delete”.

Deleting individual messages

During playback of the relevant message:

1. Press .

You will hear, “Message deleted” and the next messagewill be played.

Deleting all messages

1. Wait until all messages have been played back and youhear “End of messages. To delete all messages, pressdelete”.

2. During the next 8 seconds, press .

You will hear “All messages deleted”.

Call screening

When your answering machine takes an incoming call,you can listen to the caller over the loudspeaker. You canthen decide whether or not to take the call in person.

1. When the phone rings, let the machine answer the calland wait until the caller begins to leave their message.

2. If you choose to speak to the caller in person, pick upyour handset.

Your Decor 425 will automatically stop recording.

To screen calls, make sure theanswer machine is switched on andthat the loudspeaker volume is setto an audible level.

If you lift the handset or pressSTOP during the 8 seconds, allmessages will be saved.

Remote access lets you switch on your Decor 425answering machine and listen to your messages from any Touchtone™ telephone.

Before you can access your messages, you must enter a 3-digit security code.

The pre-set security code is 000, but you can change this to a more memorable number.

Check your security code

1. Press .

The security code is announced.

Change your security code

1. Press and hold .

“Security code setting” is announced.

2. Release .

You will hear “First digit” and the current setting.

3. Use and to move through the digits – .

Each number is announced as you skip through.

4. When you hear the number you want, press .

You will hear “Second digit” and the current setting.

5. Select the second and third digits as you did for the first.

When you have set all three digits, your new securitycode will be announced.

Remote operation

1. Call your Decor 425.

2. After listening to the outgoing message press on the phone you are using. You will hear, “Please enter yoursecurity code”.

3. You have 8 seconds to enter your security code.

4. You will hear “You have ‘x’ new messages” and messageplayback begins.

5. At the end of playback you will hear “To hear the mainmenu, press 1”.

You now have 8 seconds to enter the main menu beforeyour phone hangs up.

6. Follow the instructions in the main menu to control youranswering machine (see ‘Remote access menu’).

If you do not enter the securitycode within 8 seconds or if youenter the wrong security code youwill hear, “Incorrect security code,please enter your security code”. If you enter the wrong code againyou will hear, “Incorrect securitycode, thank you for calling” andthe line will be disconnected.

Switch on your answering machine from another phone

If you forgot to turn on your answering machine beforegoing out:

1. Ring your Decor 425.After 20 rings your machine will take the call.

2. You can now access your Decor 425 remotely (see page 24).

3. Select from the main menu, to switch on.7PQRS

While listening to your OGM,pressing (5) will reset to the pre-recorded OGM.

HelpMany common problems are caused by the telephone and power cables being incorrectlyconnected, not connected at all, or the power being turned off.

Please check that your BT Decor 425 has been correctly set up, see page 6, before ringingthe BT Decor 425 Helpline.

No dialling tone

Check your line/power cord connections.

You dial and nothing happens

You may be connected to an exchange which has not been modernised. Call BT onFreefone 0800 800 150 for information.

The phone does not ring

Check the ringer is not turned off. (See page 7).

Are there too many other phones or faxes connected to the same line? (See ‘How manytelephones can you have?’, on page 33.)

You hear the dial tone or recorded exchange messages when storing numbers

This may happen when storing numbers. Ignore any noise as it will not affect storing.

Outgoing message does not record

Speak clearly, close enough (15–30cm) to the microphone when recording your message.

Check that the memory is not full.

Your Decor 425 cannot be operated from another phone

Check the phone you are using is a Touchtone™ phone or is set to tone dialling.

Check you are using the correct security code. (See page 23.)

When entering your code, make sure you allow enough time, at least 2 seconds, between digits for your Decor 425 to recognise each one.

Noise interference coming through the loudspeaker

Make sure your Decor 425 is not placed too near another mobile or cordless phone.

Some cordless telephones and payphones are not compatible.

Safety

General

Only use the power supply included with the product. Using an unauthorised powersupply unit will invalidate your guarantee and may damage the answer machine. The item code for the power supply unit is 010198.

Do not open your Decor 425. This could expose you to high voltages or other risks.

Environmental

Do not expose to direct sunlight.

We recommend that you do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoiddamage.

Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces which generate fibres, or place itin locations preventing a free flow of air over it’s surfaces.

Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humidconditions, such as in bathrooms.

Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions.

There is a slight chance that your phone could be damaged by an electrical storm.

We recommend that you unplug the power and telephone line cord for the duration ofthe storm, as damage is not covered by the guarantee.

Cleaning

Clean your Decor 425 with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never usehousehold polish as this may damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this maycause static shock.

Guarantee Your BT Decor 425 is guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase.

Subject to the terms listed below the guarantee will provide for the repair of, or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion the option to replace the BT Decor 425, or any componentthereof, which is identified as faulty or below standard, or as a result of inferiorworkmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the date of purchase may bereplaced with a refurbished or repaired product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:

The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within 12 months from the date ofpurchase, provided that the equipment is sent to the repair address within this period.

This guarantee does not cover any faults or defects caused by accidents, misuse, fairwear and tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any attempt at adjustment orrepair other than approved agents.

This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights.

Within the 12 month guarantee period:

If you experience a problem with your BT Decor 425 please read the Help section or callthe Helpline on 0870 605 8047. Calls are charged at national rates.

In the unlikely event of a defect occurring, please return the product, with the receipt, tothe place of purchase.

Outside of the 12 month guarantee period:

If your product needs repair after the guarantee period has ended, the repair must meetthe approval requirements for connection to the telephone network. We recommend that you call the Helpline on 0870 605 8047 for information onour recommended repair agents.

Returning your phone

If the Helpline is unable to remedy your problem they will ask you to return the product.Where possible, pack the product in its original packaging. All parts must be returnedincluding the mains power adaptor. (Please note that we cannot take responsibility forgoods damaged in transit.) Please obtain and keep proof of posting from the Post Office.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line.Your Decor 425 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephones may not ring. With different telephone types there is noguarantee of ringing, even when the REN is less than 4.

Switchboard compatibilityThis product is intended for use within the UK for connection to the public telephonenetwork and compatible switchboards, which support tone dialling and time break recall.If in doubt please consult your service provider.

RecallThe Recall button is used with switchboards, certain BT Calling Features and othernetwork services, such as telephone banking.

Wall-mounting your Decor 425 (Optional)1. Using a 3mm bit, drill two holes in the wall 70mm vertically apart.

2. Insert the wall plugs (if necessary) then screw in the screws, leaving a small gap betweenthe screw heads and the wall.

3. Route the line and power cords through the back of your Decor 425 as shown below.

Fit the wall-mounting bracket to the base of the phone.

4. To stop the handset falling when the base is wall-mounted, rotate the handset clip 180°.
