A budget for today and tomorrowSurf Coast Shire Council’s 2016/17 draft budget plans for reduced future revenue by driving reform, and invests in building and renewing the community infrastructure required in the future.

Council has prepared the budget with a view to maintaining services the community needs and continuing to provide community infrastructure while adhering to the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Council Rates system, which caps rate rises at 2.5% for 2016/17.

While rates are increasing by 2.5%, Council is delivering a 6.9% increase in asset renewal funding as part of an ongoing strategy to ensure all communities across the Surf Coast can continue to access high-standard infrastructure.

The further increase in asset renewal is part of $18.6m in new capital works funding for the delivery of 75 infrastructure projects.

Council is also investing in projects that will identify savings and more efficient ways of delivering services, with an initial $1m allocation to commence upgrades to digital services. Council will affirm details of this program and funding requirements as a priority.

Council will also allocate $500,000 to identify and pursue projects that will save money in future.

Council’s business improvement program identified $332,000 in savings over 2015/16, which have been incorporated into the 2016/17 budget and will remain for future years. Council will also add an additional officer to bolster the efforts of the team to seek further gains.

The increase to the garbage charge will remain at 4% and will support new initiatives such as the Big Belly Bins.

Council will be supplying gravity lock bins to residents in Lorne to combat an ongoing problem where cockatoos have been forcing open bin lids and scattering rubbish.

Following a successful trial Lorne will also receive Big Belly Bins along the full length of Mountjoy Parade. The bins use solar power and digital technology to

improve the efficiency of collection. They also prevent access by cockatoos.

Council will receive higher Roads to Recovery grants from the federal government this year with an additional $1.7m allocated to priority road projects.

To support Council’s ongoing efforts to improve its statutory planning service this budget provides additional staffing to address application backlogs. Council is also investing in improved technology to supplement the improvement in our assessment process that is already underway.

Mayor, Cr Rose Hodge, said the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates system provided a catalyst for reform across the local government sector.

“This budget sets in place a number of initiatives that will save money in the long term,” Cr Hodge said.

“Council has made an excellent start by containing the underlying increase in costs for existing operations to only 1.7%.

“While the Fair Go Rates system will pose challenges, it is up to us to do the hard work to ensure we can continue to deliver essential services and infrastructure at an affordable cost.”

Deputy Mayor, Cr Clive Goldsworthy said technology enabled business improvement would be a major focus for the next few years.

“We believe there are ways we can save money for our community and deliver a better customer experience by extending our use of digital technology. Council has made an allocation to start this important work.

“We will be establishing a digital

transformation taskforce, with community representation, to further develop the concept of technology enabled business improvement,” said Cr Goldsworthy.

Cr Hodge emphasised Council’s commitment to asset renewal.

“Despite the tighter financial climate it is essential Council continues to meet the increasing costs of maintaining infrastructure. Council has a long term asset renewal funding model and this budget meets that commitment.

“Asset renewal might not get the photo opportunities and it’s not glamourous, but it is vital for the long-term future of communities across the shire,” Cr Hodge said.

“Once we have new buildings and new roads, we need to maintain them and Council has put in place funding plans to ensure this happens – this means the community can be confident the condition will meet our needs into the future.”

Submissions to the Council budget, Council Plan and Rating Strategy can be made by completing a submission form – either on-line at www.surfcoastconversations.com.au or by writing to the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Keith Baillie, Surf Coast Shire Council, PO Box 350, Torquay 3228.

There will also be opportunities to discuss the draft budget in person with Councillors and officers. Times and venues will be advertised in local media and on Council’s website.

Submissions close 4pm on Monday 23 May 2015

Around twenty people attended the April meeting of Growing Winchelsea Inc. Bright eyed and bushy tailed was not a term that could have been used to describe some of the attendees, as this was one of our breakfast meetings that began at 7 am.

Our thanks go to Janine at the Winchelsea Hotel for opening early and sponsoring our breakfast.

On the agenda, was a letter (in reply to earlier correspondence from Growing Winchelsea) from Surf Coast Shire’s Peter McLean.

We had requested completion dates for works promised for Winchelsea, and his reply is (with answers in italic):

1. The asphalting of the car park near the skate ramps. (completed 4 April).

2. Updating of the information boards outside of the Visitor Information Centre. This has been referred to our Business & Tourism group and we will aim to get that updated by 30 April

3. Car park improvements to the area outside of the V.I.C. This has been allocated to our design team who will complete their review by 30 June 2016 and depending on the cost of recommendations they will be referred for consideration in 2017/18 budget.

4. Road sealing on the corner between the V.I.C. and Café la Hoot (completed 4 April).

5. Signage at the La Hoot corner, to prevent vehicles exiting against oncoming traffic. Line marking with the recent asphalt works including new arrows on the pavement have made this quite clear now and no further action proposed.

6. The drain that was to be dug, to drain the leakage from the swimming pool to the river. With the pool now closed and partially emptied there is no leaking and no drain is necessary. This leak will be fully repaired before next pool season.

7. Repairs to stem the leaking of the swimming pool. Contractor has been appointed and repair works will be

completed over winter ready for next pool season.

8. Footpath from the mud brick picnic hut to the swimming pool. This project is listed in the 2016/17 budget as a new concrete pathway. We will aim to complete this path before next pool season assuming the budget is adopted.

9. Path from the mud brick picnic hut down to the riverbank. Met recently on site with Stuart Fountain and indicated we will investigate an all access path (crushed rock) from the playground to the river bank. A path direct from the toilet will be too steep. This will be done as part of the Barwon Terrace pathway listed above

10. The path renewal from Princes Highway to the Senior Citizens clubrooms. Listed in the 2016/17 renewal budget. Timing will be before 30 Dec 2016

11. The path in Bennett Street from the Princes Highway to the Eastern Reserve. This is listed in the draft 2017/18 capital works budget. Being a special charge scheme we will commence our consultation on this project from July this year.

12. Improved signage at the entrance to Eastern Reserve. Signage at the Princes Highway directing to Eastern reserve has not been investigated yet. Will review and implement any recommendations by 30 June 2016.

13. Road renewal from the Op-shop corner to the Hesse Street corner. Listed in the 2015/16 renewal program and will be delivered before 30 June 2016

As part of a series of regular meetings, the Growing Winchelsea Inc. committee and Surf Coast Shire Executive meeting has been changed to Friday April 29. The meetings are held regularly to discuss items vital to the progress of our town. The change of date for this meeting is to enable discussions on the 2015-2016 Council Budget.

A Hunt & Gather Winchelsea debrief meeting was held on Monday 18 April. This enabled everyone to contribute ideas and critique this years inaugural event.

The Growing Winchelsea Inc. Tourism Destination Plan Workshop with Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism Inc. was held on Tuesday 19 April at Eastern Reserve.

Those who took part are Liz Price (GORRT), Simon Loone and Matt Taylor (Surf Coast Shire), Stuart Fountain, Michael Hastings, Cr Carol McGregor, Jenny Mathieson, Lesley Christie, Lindsay Bennett, Leonie Kerr, Di Schulz and Michelle Stocks.

If you would like more information on the destination plan, please email [email protected]

The Surf Coast Shire is to hold a workshop to develop a community engagement plan for the Winchelsea Common. It was held on Tuesday April 9. Growing Winchelsea Inc. was represented by President Stu Fountain.

Winchelsea Gateway Project. The following are the three artists/artist teams who have been shortlisted by Council are Clayton Thompson; Artventure – Paul Johnson & Gail Mason and Benjamin Storch & Matthew Harding

These artists have been extended the opportunity to develop concept proposals for these important sculptures.

As part of the concept development phase, Council is providing an opportunity to connect the artists with the community. A community session is being held to give the artists a good

understanding of the town, Winchelsea and its people. Comment was recently sought by Council from the community via feedback forms, which revealed strong connections to the town’s rural heritage and country village character.

Council is hosting the “Meet the Artists” drop in session on Wednesday 27 April 2016, 6.00pm-8.00pm at the Eastern Reserve Hub in Winchelsea. Interested persons and members of the community are encourage to drop in at any time during this period, and meet with the artist teams and discuss what is important to them about the character of Winchelsea.

The sculptural concepts, which will be developed by the artists over several weeks, will be exhibited for public comment with a final decision on the selected artwork to be made by the Project Selection Panel.

RSVPs are not essential but appreciated to: [email protected] .

The Long Day Childcare centre is still moving along, with Hesse Rural Health receiving the feasibility report. They will discuss it further with the writer of the report. It was suggested that a minimum of 60 children would be needed to make it financially viable.

The Mathisons Road signs on the Princes Highway are causing confusion with motorists, particularly those trying to get to the Dahlia farm. It was decided to write to VicRoad asking that the signs be removed, or at least the ‘No through road’ sign be made larger.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday May 11, 2016 beginning at 12.30 p.m. The venue will be announced in the Star.

Barwon Water will begin carting water to Lorne from the Geelong system next week to shore up storage levels.

Allen Reservoir is currently at 33.7 per cent capacity following months of unprecedented dry conditions.

Trucks will deliver about 210,000 litres a day, a third of Lorne’s daily demand.

Barwon Water Managing Director Joe Adamski said water carting and the introduction of tougher Stage 3 water restrictions would ensure storage levels could be maintained.

“The weather conditions being experienced in Lorne and across the region are extreme. It is dry beyond what we have ever experienced before,” Mr Adamski said.

“We need significant rainfall to help Allen Reservoir recover, but, in the meantime, prudent water use and supplementing supplies from the Geelong system will ensure Lorne has enough water,” he said.

Mr Adamski said although water restrictions focused on outdoor water use, residents could further assist by reducing consumption inside the home.

“Having short showers, turning the tap off while brushing teeth and making sure the dishwasher or washing machine has a full load all help keep water use down,” he said.

Water tankers will travel from Winchelsea to Lorne via Deans Marsh. Initially three trucks will operate, delivering a combined 10 loads a day to the Lorne water treatment plant on Polwarth Street and the Lorne basin on Holliday Road.

Carting is expected to begin on Tuesday, April 26, and continue until further notice.

The trucks will operate from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Further details about water restrictions can be found on Barwon Water’s website www.barwonwater.vic.gov.au or by telephoning 1300 656 007.

Unveiling of the TributeRe the unveiling of the Tribute cairn on the 22/5/16. I contacted the council to see who was going to be unveiling the item.

The answer I received was thus:--

The committee requested a number of dignitaries to be invited to be involved in the unveiling of the cairn.

Due to protocols which have come from the funding agreements with the Federal and State Governments we are required to invite the appropriate ministers.

At this stage we are waiting on a confirmation from the State Government for a representative.

The committee currently have a Federal minister and the mayor confirmed to be part of the ceremony

One question WHY? Where are the representatives of the people the cairn is meant to commemorate

Surely something such as this memorial should be unveiled by people who actually served and defended this country.

Why not have the oldest male and female ex service personnel in the area, together, having the honour of unveiling. Be they Private or General.

I would assume for them it would be a tribute to fallen comrades, rather than a minister and the Mayor having another photo opportunity

For once, forget photo opportunity protocols.

Does anyone agree with me?

Keith Walker

Gas Versus ElectricityNo, this is not a game of footy between 2 teams with funny names. It is actually a forum to be held next Monday 2nd May 7:30 PM at the Hub. I always assumed, with out thinking much about it, that the rolling out of the gas pipeline into Winchelsea would be great for our town and it wasn't until I read Doug Rolfe's letter in last week's Star that I started to question my assumptions.

I will certainly be there to hear the pros and cons of connecting gas even if it is only of academic interest to me as the chances of the pipe line going as far as Dicksons Rd are about non-existent. However if it does extend out to our property would we connect? Probably not.

We have two houses on our property both serviced by LPG gas bottles. The stone house gas bottle services the gas cook top. Each gas bottle lasts about two years. About $100 every 2 years. The stone house hot water is solar with electricity back up. The electricity back up has been turned off since the solar panels were installed. Heating is with a slow combustion wood heater.

Very efficient and using fuel that is replaceable with what is growing in our paddock. Even if the gas line was at the stone house front door you would have to wonder about the cost efficiencies of taking it any further.

The granny flat also has LPG gas bottles. They service the cook top and the hot water service. The hot water is connected to a solar panel and a water jacket in the slow combustion wood heater. With the solar panel, in summer we use a bottle of gas about every four to five months and the same in winter due to the wood heater. We use another bottle for the rest of the time. About $300 in gas for the year. Even if gas was half the price of LPG bottles it would take a long time to recoup your cost of installing gas.

The other thing to think about is the effect on the environment. There is no known way that gas is renewable. Once it is burnt it is gone but the CO2 remains in the atmosphere. Electricity is increasingly becoming renewable. We buy our electricity from Powershop who operate the wind generators at Mt Mercer.

The Sprint Car That Transformed by Logan Davis - Grade 3/4

OH NO I’m going to be late for the race. So I got up and drove to the shed to load the sprint car up in the truck, ready to drive to Las Vegas.

When we got there I unloaded the car and went onto the track. All the sprint cars came on the track to do a hot lap (that’s a warm up). During hot laps one sprint car kept rudely pushing the cars out, he almost made a crash.

When I was racing I had to start pole, which is in the first position. The flag dropped! All the cars sped up as we started to race. When I had done half a lap 4 cars crashed! Luckily they were behind me. The red flag waved

and every car rolled to a stop. The crash crew came over to see if people in the cars were OK.

After they had checked the drivers they towed the cars to the infield so the rest of the cars could race. When we started to race again we had 2 laps to go. On the last lap a car was right behind me. It crashed into me! As soon as he hit me I rolled. The other car also rolled. The rest of the cars stopped and almost crashed into me.

I was cross! The crash crew came straight over to see if we were not hurt. After we got out of the car no-one won the race. So the tow truck came over to tow the sprint cars into the pits.

When I got into the pits the race monitor came over, he said that I couldn’t go in a heat. I had to go straight to A-Main because my time trial was not good. When it was time they took me out and I saw a funny car. It had 6 wheels! The bad thing was that I was racing against him. I was starting 1st and he was starting 2nd and the safety car took us around 2 times to get us used to it.

The safety car got out of the way and we were ready to go green. So the flag dropped and we started racing, the funny car didn’t overtake me. I was in the lead after 5 laps the car with 6 wheels was way back I started to ease the speed a little I felt confident and suddenly, the six wheel car zoomed past me. When there were 2 laps left I sped up and gunned the engine faster and faster. It was the final lap !!! I was edging closer to take him over I took a deep breath and turned the wheel I pushed the engine hard I nudged past him and just go in

front as we crossed the finish line!!! I won the race!

We all stopped and the rest of the cars went back in the pits. I drove to the infield. When we win a race we have to talk to the track manager. The trophy people came over and gave me a trophy. I got out of the car and held the trophy up over my head.

All of a sudden the funny car zoomed past and tried to run me over! I gave the trophy to the crew and hopped into my car and drove off so he couldn't get me.

After a while I looked behind me so I knew where he was. Then he was coming straight at me with lots of speed I tried to turn around but it was to late BANG CRASH we hit each other and we flipped the car the ambulance came straight over to see if we we’re hurt but we weren’t.

Entrance sculpturesThe Surf Coast Shire and Vic Roads are commissioning public artwork for the entrances into Winchelsea. The sculptures will be located on the Princes Highway (in the median strip) at both the Colac and Geelong ends of town.

The following are three artists/artist teams who have recently been shortlisted by Council:

• Clayton Thompson• Artventure – Paul Johnson & Gail

Mason• Benjamin Storch & Matthew

Harding These artists have been extended the opportunity to develop concept proposals for these important sculptures.

As part of the concept development phase, Council is providing an opportunity to connect the artists with the community. A community session is being held to give the artists a good understanding of the town, Winchelsea and its people.

Interested persons and members of the community are encourage to “drop in” at any time during this period, and meet with the artist teams and discuss what is important to them about the character of Winchelsea.

The sculptural concepts, which will be developed by the artists over several weeks, will be exhibited for public comment with a final decision on the selected artwork to be made by the Project Selection Panel.

RSVPs are not essential but appreciated to [email protected]

Over 100 people joined together last Saturday to celebrate the 100th birthday of well-known local woman Ellen O’Connor. The celebrations took place at the Winchelsea Bowls clubrooms.

Letters of congratulations were received from the Victorian Governor, the Prime Minister, the Victorian Premier, Federal and State Members of Parliament, and a certificate from the Surf Coast Council, signed by the CEO, Ward Councillors and the Mayor, and presented to her by Cr Heather Wellington.

Ellen was born on April 23, 1916 in Geelong, to Robert and Ann Woods.

Can you imagine growing up without radio, refrigerators, penicillin, telephone, the motor car, TV, passenger airline flights, not to mention computers, the internet or mobile phones? Ellen can.

Can you also imagine how many bushfires, floods, droughts, etc. that have wracked Australia since 1916? Ellen has lived through them all.

And then there was the terrible fear of living through the Great Depression, World War 2, Malayan, Korea, Borneo and Vietnam, Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars. Ellen has lived and suffered

through them all.

Following schooling in Geelong, Ellen learned secretarial skills at the Gordon Institute. After two years working in that field, she followed her dream to become a nurse, commencing with the Kitchener Memorial Hospital in Geelong.

Shortly after the beginning of the Second World War, Ellen signed on. She nursed in the Middle East, and then a military hospital at Watten in North Queensland, where soldiers from Papua New Guinea were treated. She was being transferred to Borneo when she learnt of the wars end.

Ellen married Bill O’Connor, and together they had four children, Ann, Margaret, Robyn and Jennifer. Bill died in 1985.

Ellen still lives in her own home, thanks to her determination and the help she receives from her daughter Jennifer.

She possesses a sharp mind and a clear memory, and despite her failing eyesight, is as determined as ever to enjoy her life.

Ellen is Winchelsea’s ‘Living Treasure’, and we wish her many more happy birthdays.

Sausages and smiles will be on the menu for the Winchelsea community at a free VicRoads barbeque on 30 April at 11am to officially celebrate the end of the Princes Highway duplication project through the town.

South Western Region Project Director Tim Price said VicRoads wanted to thank the Winchelsea community for their patience and cooperation during the long period of roadworks with a free barbeque on Saturday.

“It’s a way for us to bring the community together to thank them for perservering with the delays and inconveniences that naturally go with major projects of this kind, “ Mr Price said.

“It’s a fitting way to celebrate the benefits that this great piece of infrastructure will bring to this area, now and long into the future.

“We’re asking people to drop in, say hello to our staff and share in the celebrations.”

Information about the upcoming duplication works between Winchelsea and Colac will also be available to view.

Winchelsea Cricket Club Presentation NightOn Thursday the 24th of March, 2016 the Club held its presentation night to close off the 2015/16 season with dinner and trophy presentations and a jumping castle for the little ones.

Nathan Schroeter thanked everyone for their commitment in Life Members, Members, parents, wives, friends, Senior and Junior Coaches, scorers, the tireless workers in the kitchen and the bar, the committee, the valued sponsors, hard working Junior Co-ordinator James Stephenson and Matthew Tench Division 3 Delegate and representative for our club. The Club had 5 teams – 3 senior and 2 junior. The 2nd XI and the 3rd XI progressed to finals but unfortunately didn’t make it into the Grand Final. The u/13 Friday night “c” team had mixed results for their season and the u/15 Emond was a combined team of Winchelsea and Modewarre. The grading of the u/15’s was a little steep for the abilities of the combined team. The Club is proud of the Juniors and their commitment to the game of cricket. Special congratulations to Tavae Sauni on GCA Division 3 3rd XI bowling aggregate winner and to Riley Berg playing in the u/14 Barwon Rockets Team and Fin and Indy Parish in their age group GCA representative teams. Congratulations to everyone involved as the Club was 3rd in the GCA3 Club Championship-

SARAH HENDERSON MP

Authorised by Sarah Henderson, 3A/195 Colac Rd Waurn Ponds Vic 3216

Celebrating the opening of the duplicated road through Winchelsea.

With the Surf Coast Restoring Coastal Corridors Green Army team.

WIth Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at a local NBN construction site.

Delivering for Winchelsea

I am proud to be working hard on your behalf for Winchelsea. Locally, the Turnbull Government is delivering: • Duplication of the Princes Highway from Waurn Ponds to Colac. Since being elected, our government has provided $31.08m to complete the Waurn Ponds to Winchelsea stage and $192.7m for the Winchelsea to Colac duplication. This project is so important for road safety, jobs, the local economy and of course the township of Winchelsea.

• NBN fast broadband. Some great news on our NBN rollout with fixed line construction underway in Winchelsea. Construction of NBN for the outskirts of Winchelsea is expected to start in the first half of 2017.

• $2.11m for 10 new mobile phone base stations across Corangamite. Modelling shows that coverage (in whole or in part) will be improved in Winchelsea and Winchelsea South.

• 13 Green Army teams across Corangamite including a team at Barwon Park Winchelsea.

• $35m to upgrade the Great Ocean Road. This project, vehemently opposed by Labor, is so important for road safety, jobs, tourism and the local economy. That’s why I campaigned and have just delivered an extra $10m for this iconic road. This is part of our $1.5 billion Victorian infrastructure package which includes $220m for the Murray Basin Freight Rail project and $345m for rural and regional roads, a wonderful outcome for Corangamite.

• $140,000 for an upgrade of the Gosney/Murrell Street intersection under our Roads to Recovery program.

• $20,000 for the Winchelsea Walk project under our Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.

Delivering the infrastructure and services Winchelsea needs is vital. That is why I am fighting for better passenger rail. Labor must act immediately to deliver more daily train services to and from Winchelsea. I am also fighting for a duplicated rail track through southern Geelong which would deliver more frequent and reliable train services to Winchelsea, Colac and beyond.

With your support, I am determined to keep fighting on your behalf and delivering the infrastructure and services Winchelsea deserves.

Sarah HENDERSON MP Federal Member for Corangamite

Pregnancy - Breakthrough Research All Women Need To KnowPregnancy, childbirth and aging can put the pelvic floor muscles through their paces. Many women suffer from incontinence and related conditions, which contribute to a massive physical, emotional, social and financial cost, not to mention the stress that inevitably goes along it.

A new research report (1) has proven that Chiropractic care can have an impact on pelvic floor muscles. Women who receive chiropractic care have a greater ability to relax their pelvic floor muscles at rest. This means that this could benefit pregnant women and help them have a natural vaginal delivery, free from drugs and other intervention.

This knowledge has proved exciting for Chiropractors and for women receiving Chiropractic care.

Call One Body Chiropractic and start you and your unborn baby’s journey to better health and wellbeing.

We travelled to Corio this week with high expectations of some good wins and we delivered with all teams taking 4 points except of the 13 & Unders.A Grade Winchelsea 67 def Corio 36Another great game from our young A Grade team. We started off with a bang scoring 25 goals in the first quarter alone and thought we might crack the tonne again this season but unfortunately we slowed up significantly after this. Dione Onehi, Connie Royal and Meg Royal provided plenty of turnovers. The two sisters then combined beautifully through the mid-court to deliver the ball to our attackers who finished off well with relatively high pressure from Corio’s physically strong defenders. We stretched the margin every quarter to finish with a convincing win.

Best Players: Connie Royal, Meg Royal and Dione OnehiB Grade Winchelsea 29 def Corio 24We started off really strong with taking a five goal lead at quarter time. Tori Hose was magnificent in goal keeper, then later goal defence providing a lot of intercepts and then delivering well to attack. Unfortunately by the half we had let the lead slip to one. Some significant changes at half didn’t improve the situation but a fantastic last quarter had us come home strong with a 5 goal win. Great team effort girls, let’s hope we can continue this in the weeks to come.

Best Players: Tori Hose, Belinda Czerniawski & Sarah LeydenC Grade

Winchelsea 52 def Corio 23We started this week the way we have wanted to start all year! Leading by 10 at the first break we knew we had to keep the pressure up. Claire Mawson, Rachel Frost & Holly Worland combined well in the centre whilst Lesley Mathison played a selfless game assisting Lyndal O’Grady who netted an exceptional 51 of 52 goals!! Our defensive pressure was equally good making Corio work hard for every goal scored. Our first win of the season and hopefully many more to come.

Best Players: Holly Worland, Lyndal O’Grady & Jessie HilsdonD Grade Winchelsea 43 def Corio 15We had an impressive start to the game with Tilly Campana leading the way in the centre court. Captain Amanda Partridge was solid in goal shooter all day, leading and working with the juniors on court beautifully. The two Kim’s proved a tough barrier to break in the defensive circle with Corio only scoring 15 goals for the game. A fantastic team effort to secure a strong win.

Best Players: Amanda Partridge, Tilly Campany and Kim Allen17 & Under Winchelsea 43 def Corio 17We started off very strong leading by 10 goals at quarter time. We continued to build on this lead throughout the game regardless of the combinations we tried, all were successful. We asked Emily Steed to step up from Under 15’s and she slotted in beautifully in goals complimenting Ebony Berg and Romy Fawcett very well. Jess Loone was strong through the

centre court making sure the ball was delivered to our goalers with precision and providing turnovers along with it. Our defenders played strong defence keeping Corio to a score of 17 for the game.

Best Players: Jess Loone, Romy Fawcett and Ebony Berg15 & Under Winchelsea 31 def Corio 12A fantastic start by all players saw us with a handy lead which we kept for the whole game. Excellent tight full court defence and fast moving ball work gave our goalers many opportunities to score. Our strong start to the game gave us the opportunity to run many combinations. Mia Robertson and Emily Steed combined beautifully in goals, attacking well and rarely missing. Issy Loone was strong in both circle defence and also in delivery the ball through the mid-court.

Best Players: Mia Robertson, Emily Steed and Issy Loone13 & Under Corio 15 def Winchelsea 7In a low scoring affair our 13 & Under team just couldn’t keep up with an accurate shooting Corio team. Pocket rockets Indi Jenkins and Jorja Hilsdon were excellent in the centre and wing attack driving hard all game and delivering the ball well to their team mates. Hayley Steed played a strong defensive game providing lots of turnovers but unfortunately when Corio got the ball in the circle they shot with accuracy leaving very little opportunity for rebounds. We came home strong winning the last quarter by a goal. Keep up the hard work at training girls and we are sure to get a few more wins on the board.

Best Players: Indi Jenkins, Jorja Hilsdon & Hayley Steed

ROUND 4ANZAC DAY WEEKEND LEST WE FORGETLast Saturday the Club travelled to Corio on the back of wins in both the Reserves and Senior teams, and expectations were high to have repeat performances from both groups.

RESERVESThe Reserves started well as they have all season, leading at the first break, and were right in the mix at half time. Inaccurate kicking of 1 goal 5points in the third quarter let themselves down, especially when they were able to hold Corio to 1 goal 1 point. The last quarter was a tight affair, but the Blues just couldn’t convert after having so much of the play. A disappointing finish after so much effort. Good to see some of the younger members of the team holding their own, and settling into the side well such as Lachie King and Darcy Witcombe.

GOALS: Shane Brady 2 Lachlan King 1 Rhys Thompson 1 Cris Robertson 1 Zac Worland 1

BEST: Daniel Greskie Zac Worland Lachlan King Darcy Witcombe Rhys Thompson Will Thompson.

The teams are in need of water runners every week, if you feel you can help in any way please see the Coaching staff, Norm Banham or Daniel Greskie. It would be great to see someone other than the President of the Club running water due to shortage of people offering to help out.

SENIORSThe Senior play list was a lot shorter than the previous couple of weeks due to injuries and suspention. The Blues were 2 pts down in a tight quarter of footy in fairly warm conditions when the siren went at the first break. They kept their solid performance up to lead 8.8 to 6.4 at half time.

The third quarter saw the Corio Devils come out and take charge - allowing the Blues a miserable 3 pts for the quarter to their 4.6. The prospect of another win was fading fast, and the group would have to recharge for the last. This they did, kicking 5.2, however they couldn’t peg the young Devils side back enough. Corio kicking 7.3 in the last to get them the 4 points at the final siren.

GOALS: Dave tucker 3 Jackson Smith 3 Adam Bird 2 Tavae Sauni 2 Joel Davies Jared Dunkley Micheal Condon all 1 goal.

BEST: Jackson Smith Byron Mathison Josh Carracher Dave Tucker Sam Kellock.

ON THE SOCIAL SIDE: The Club’s Reverse Raffle is not far away – May 14th ! This is always a great night out for the Club with this year bigger and better - not to be missed. One popular way of purchasing tickets is to “go thirds” in one or more tickets to spread the chance of a win. See Scotty at the Bar or Daniel Greskie for ticket information.

REMINDER:A reminder to all Junior Players in the Club - Registration discount of $20- will end on May the 1st

GET WELL WISHES:Everyone at the Club wishes a speedy recovery to one of our long standing members of the Catering Team, Elaine. We miss her company in the kitchen on Thursday Nights and look forward to her returning soon. Thinking of you Elaine

Bridge-works beginStory John Broadrick Photo Sandra Jones

Work on removing the existing road pavement on our beloved bluestone bridge got under way this week, with local contractor Charlie Earl at the controls of the machine.

The work will turn the bridge into a pedestrian-only walkway. It is hoped that future farmers markets can be held on the bridge.

The roadway needed to be lowered so that the bluestone sides were to a safe height for pedestrian safety.
