In what several locals have described as an accident waiting to happen, a part-loaded cattle truck travelling from the Colac direction across the Barwon River tipped over its rear trailer crossing the bridge. The accident occurred at around 8:30am, closing the bridge.

While negotiating the dog-leg down the incline from the Tea Rooms onto the bridge, it was suggested that suspension dampers together with swaying cattle led to the trailer overbalancing and falling onto the bridge railing. The trailer was close to completely falling off the bridge into the river.

A number of cattle fell out of the trailer onto the river bank below, several being killed and more sustaining injuries. Some amazingly survived the fall and went on to graze on the green grass beside the river.

Police, SES and CFA crews were in attendance and had to close the Princes Highway. Diversions were put in place sending traffic through Inverleigh, although the bluestone bridge was also opened one way at a time for limited use.

The accident highlights the importance even today of the river crossing through Winchelsea, which historically was known as the Gateway to the Western District for that very reason. Detours involve substantial extra distance either north towards Inverleigh or south down to the Cape Otway Road.

Local commentators believe the reverse camber arising from the temporary roadworks allowing two-way traffic across the 1970’s concrete bridge over the Barwon are partly to blame for the accident. Even at 40kph, heavy trucks will experience a large sway as the suspension corrects just in time for the load to swing to the opposite side.

Easter egg hunt at Barwon Park

Winchelsea Joey Scouts and Leaders became pirates for the day and set sail on the Enterprize, a replica of John Pascoe Fawkner’s schooner that sailed in 1835, with the first permanent white settlers, from Van Dieman’s Land to what is now the city of Melbourne.

The Joey Pirates were welcomed aboard by the Captain, and set to work to help sail the ship around the bay. The Joeys helped to raise the sails and acted as lookouts right up in the bow of the ship. They also clambered below decks, exploring the galley, the head and the

crew’s quarters. A few practice sword fights and chases around the deck kept everyone entertained.

Back on land, there was a bag of Pirate Treasure for each Joey and some more fun activities – feeling for eyeballs in the can, feeling the missing pirate leg, getting a scabby, maggot infested would on our hands, another sword fight and a lucky dip.

Afterwards, we walked up to Eastern Beach lawn area for lunch. The Joeys climbed the hill and rolled back down again. We had a little while on the

playground until it was time for home again.

Dressed in Pirate clothing, we were quite noticeable as a group and were asked if we were having a birthday party. People were quite impressed when told we were Joey Scouts.

If you would like your child to join Joey Scouts, please contact Marie on 52661841.

Letters to the EditorDear Editor.Due to the recent spate of accidents, due to road upgrade, there will be some response.

Prior to the commencement of road works I raised the issue of parking to the shopping centre and safe passage for pedestrian traffic on the North side of town. I forwarded an email to Terrence Mulders office re this matter and raised it at a community meeting. One option was to upgrade ford [Earls Bridge] for safe passage of children to and from school and to the pool and residence to access facilities on north side of town without crossing the highway.

If the people are not happy with the community involvement and lack of consultation with highway from the start of the project, form a public meeting, obtain all negotiations between Surf coast Shire, Vic Roads and Community Groups representing Winchelsea residents through [freedom of information] and be pro-active in achieving the best result.

Yours David Loone

A Big Thank YouTo Mr Terrence Mulder and his office for there quick response to my Email 19 March re falling rocks from rail bridge onto Napthine Walk ,V Line has installed metal retaining barriers to the bridge and the river walks can enjoy there walks without fear of falling rocks.

Yours David Loone

Another thank you...... to you!To everyone who submits a Letter to the Editor. Remember, the Winchelsea Star can provide you with a voice to the broader community to communicate your thoughts on the issues concerning our community. Get involved!

Dear Sir.I would like to congratulate Paulene Partridge on her excellent letter concerning the renaming of the Winchelsea Cricket ground.

As a life member of the Winchelsea Cricket Club this subject has been a crusade of mine for several years, At a recent master plan review meeting held at the Eastern Reserve Community Centre, I once again asked the question why it had been renamed. I was informed by a Council officer that the decision to rename the ground was only taken last year and that the council was able to do this as the area was not heritage listed. How can this be possible when the sign bearing the new name was erected some 5 or 6 years ago. At the time the new sign was erected I contacted our then shire councilor Lindsay Schroeter asking him to make enquiries as to why the ground had been renamed. Unfortunately Lindsay became unwell before he was able to get back to me with this information. Since then many enquiries on my behalf have led to nothing.

In 1992 I wrote a letter on behalf of the W.C.C to the Department of Conservation and Environment outlining the historical significance and history of the Winchelsea Cricket Ground. I also stated that the W.C.C would strongly object to any moves to rename the ground in the future and requested that my letter be placed on file for future reference.

It now seems clear that someone, at some unknown time has made the wrong decision to change the name. In closing I would like to call on our 2 present councilors to take steps to rectify this situation as soon as possible.

Your Sincerely. Ern Tench. Life Member Winchelsea Cricket Club.

It was about 9.15 and I was on my daily run for a coffee and the mail.

I arrived at the ‘west’ milk bar and the girls were standing out the front... pointing, talking between themselves. This is different!

It wasn’t the fact the traffic was at a stand still. I have grown accustomed to that. Maybe it was the drivers on the highway, out of their cars, mulling between them selves. Nope, wasn’t that either.

It was quiet.

No ‘beep, beep, beep’ of the roadwork machinery. No hum of the trucks hauling their way towards Colac off the bridge. No air brakes on the western approach to the bridge.

When I order my coffee, asked ‘what’s going on?’ ‘Truck crash on the bridge’.

Should have been surprised...

Only 2 weeks prior, I was a regular user of the walk way on the bridge... walking the dogs, taking the kids to the playground. On a recent crossing, I recalled the letter to the editor from Harry Schroeter re the state of the ‘guard chain’ that stood between us, and the ‘road trains’.

That was only 2 weeks before the truck, traveling from Warrnambool to Pakenham crashed, crushing the walk way guard rail, and losing part of its load, more than 12 head of cattle, over the side.

I got back to my office in Armytage Street, I sent a couple of emails... to VicRoads (who were good enough to respond), the Police and Mr Terry Mulder, Minister the for Transport, both who are yet to respond.

I received the following response from VicRoads Acting Project Director Sarah McDermott.

Construction on the $220 million duplication of the Princes Highway between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea began in March 2011 and remains on schedule for completion at the end of 2014, weather dependent. Two projects in the township of Winchelsea are also underway, a one kilometre section between Lennox Street and Austin Street and the section from Austin Street to Deans Marsh Road.

Winslow Constructors began construction between Lennox Street and Austin Street

in May 2013 with completion scheduled at the end of 2014. The final surfacing for the northern carriageway needs dry conditions to be placed and these works are expected to occur before Easter, pending suitable weather. Traffic will be moved to this new carriageway to give Winslow access to reconstruct the southern side of the road.

In December 2013, Cut & Fill commenced construction between Austin Street and Deans Marsh Road, which includes a new bridge crossing of the Barwon River and traffic signals at two intersections. Work to prepare foundations for the abutments on either side of the river has begun, which will ultimately provide support for the new bridge. The bridge is expected to take about 12 months to construct while completion of this project is expected in 2016.

VicRoads regularly monitors and reviews traffic management such as signs, bollards and traffic control as part of road construction projects, to ensure impacts on the community are minimised, while still allowing work to progress in an efficient manner. Traffic alerts are issued via the media and online channels to raise awareness when conditions change significantly. A Road Safety Audit of the construction traffic management arrangement was conducted by a qualified Road Safety Auditor on March 24, 2014.

Pedestrian crossing points such as those located near Barwon Terrace and Hesse Street, which allow pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic, then wait for a sufficient gap in traffic from the opposite direction to complete their journey across the highway, are being maintained by contractors. Temporary crossings and paths are installed during roadworks to provide access while new paths are being constructed or existing footpaths reinstated on completion of the project.

VicRoads has recently completed emergency repairs to the heritage bluestone bridge and a thorough investigation is about to take place of its foundations to determine whether further treatment is required. As a result of the cattle truck crash on Thursday 10 April, the bluestone bridge was temporarily re-opened to allow traffic to pass through Winchelsea. VicRoads’ investigations indicate the bluestone bridge is safe to be used in this manner.

Cut & Fill is preparing to commence road construction on the Colac bound lanes which will alter at various times, how traffic crosses the river.

Approximately 7,600 vehicles travel on the Princes Highway through Winchelsea every day, of these there are about 900 commercial vehicles which includes trucks and busses.

Reduced speed limits are in place to protect road workers and road users. VicRoads urges drivers to obey all on-road signage, be alert to changed traffic conditions and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

In addition to a discussion about the pedestrian crossings at Hesse St and Barwon Terrace we have discussed publishing a detailed map that will outline to exact location of the crossings.

One final note... while waiting to cross the Highway on my way home from the ‘Black Pearl’ one Friday night, my visiting Father said, someone is going to be killed crossing this road...

Please, be careful, especially with the increased traffic through town over the next 2 long weekends.

Bunyips CaveHi Kids,

I would love to hear from you and then you can tell me what you have all been up to. So please, send in your pictures, stories, puzzles, jokes etc. and put them in my mailboxes, as they are so empty! Don’t forget they are at the Winchelsea School Office and the IGA supermarket.

Jokes of the WeekQ. How did the soggy Easter Bunny dry himself? A. With a hare-dryer!

Q. Why did the Easter Bunny cross the road? A. Because the chicken had his Easter eggs!

Q. How did the Easter Bunny rate the Easter parade? A. He said it was eggs-cellent!

Bunyip’s Tip of the Week! There are lots of extra cars on the road over the holidays, so take care on bikes or when you are crossing the road, especially with all the roadworks!

World War CommemorationIn light of the Centenary of Anzac and the Winchelsea Commemorative Pathway proposal to develop a memorial to the Australian VC recipients in WW1 -including Albert Jacka - Nancy Mawson has decided to re-print her books on World War 1and 2 and they will be available before the end of the year. Anyone interested in ordering a book can phone Nancy on 52411759 or 0412787435.

The pathway would begin on the north side of the highway and we hope will continue under the Barwon bridge to the south side linking into future memorials to the Winchelsea and District Veterans from both the World Wars and other conflicts. We are hoping to involve all the community and especially the local school children. With this in mind the school has registered their interest in a Gallipoli oak that could be planted along the pathway.

This project will have an ongoing impact on the local community with respect to the sacrifices made by those who have served our nation.

Garden plants, fresh produce and a tranquil orchard setting—Garden Gate of Inverleigh, run by Christine and Keith Windle, is now open for business. With the rains we have recently had, this is a perfect time for planting.

The Windles have lived in Inverleigh since 1980. With thirty years of involvement in the district community, they are now putting their gardening expertise and passion for sustainability to good use.

They grow their garden plants in the open, mostly from local cuttings, specialising in low water-need plants suitable for the region. Fresh produce is sometimes available, depending what’s in season. Groups are encouraged to ask about a tour, talks and workshops on aspects of gardening and sustainability.

While the site is still developing and the Garden Gate shop’s grand opening is still a few months away, the nursery is up and running with more than 160 varieties of plants for sale.

Regular opening hours are 10–4, Thursday to Saturday or phone for other times.

You can find updates on what produce is in season through Facebook at www.facebook.com/gardengateofinverleigh or by emailing [email protected] to join the mailing list.

His loving interest in all our lives will be missed. A life well lived.

Geoff Mathison 26.10.1920 –5. 4.2014

Geoff was the youngest of John and Annie Mathison’s 10 children and was brought up at Bona Vista, Winchelsea

Born in the difficult time between the wars, he went to school at Winchelsea where he was taught by my mother and then, in line with his brothers and sisters, secondary schooling at Geelong.

Employed in the office at Dennys Lascelles during the Depression, I was always fascinated by how he rode a bicycle back to Winchelsea on Saturday and returned to work in Geelong on Monday…. or sometimes on the mixed train from Winchelsea taking stock to Geelong saleyards.

Called up for army training in 1941 he completed his three months basic training at Broadmeadows and returned to Dennys in time for the peak of the wool sale season.

A week later the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the Philippines and he was called up to a transport unit. A comment by his brother in law Reg, to an army officer; who was seeking male stenographers; led to Geoff and brother Wal being sent to army command HQ in Melbourne and eventually deployed to New Guinea together.

Returning to Dennys after demobilization, when refused a pay rise, he decided to return to the farm around 1948. This co-incided with the wool boom of the 50’s and, working with his brother Max, the farm was redeveloped and the mortgage lifted - a stark contrast to the depression years. Particular dislikes on the farm were rabbits and cape tulip which were soon eliminated.

Alongside the farming Geoff was very involved in many community activities. His work with Legacy was very important, R.S.L., Winchelsea Social Development Committee, foundation member of Geelong Field Naturalist Club, Barwon Rivercare group where he was instrumental in the clearing and replanting of the river banks in Winch, CFA lieutenant, farmers’ organizations and a great help and support to the Knuckey family to ensure that their engineering business continued after Hugh Knuckey’s sudden death.

Sharing routine farm tasks such as lamb marking; when talking was a way of passing the time; I was able to share many of Geoff experiences from the army, field nats and legacy. When I was first involved with the Star, Geoff delighted in telling me how at the end of hostilities when he was on Bouganville, his CO charged him with producing a daily newspaper, the Torakina Times, to be available at breakfast. This was produced overnight using a wax sheet duplicator and important information such as betting details from the previous day’s races were obtained over the army radio.

Geoff will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and their children.

Parade in front of Clubroom. Then service in the Hub followed by refreshments . Eastern Reserve, Hopkins St

Following the formal wreath laying the Public will be invited to lay their own flowers or wreaths or to use the provided sprigs of rosemary or wattle.

In time we hope to map the graves of Ex-Service men and women in the Winchelsea Cemetery. If you tend a grave there and know of an untended Service grave perhaps you could, for ANZAC Day, honour that person with a flower or gum or wattle leaves/blossom. This help would be appreciated.

Food for thought

Since the schools have been on holidays for the last week it would be rather easy for Good Friday to slip past almost unnoticed. Yet Good Friday is one of the two most significant days in the Christian faith, surpassed only a few days later by Easter day. Can I invite you not to forget the significance of Good Friday this week, after all the very word “holiday” originally came from the words “Holy day” and the very significant and sacred nature of this day was the entire reason that it became a day off work. Good Friday is the day on which we pause to remember the self-sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross for us.

The cross in the Christian faith is the most confronting of symbols, by it we are reminded of our own need for forgiveness and the amazing love of God that he would go to such lengths to restore our relationship

with him. From time to time people have said that the Bible accuses one particular group of having crucified Jesus. Yet an unbiased reading clearly shows that the gospel writers lay the blame for the crucifixion broadly on all of humanity. This is shown by the way all of the different groups play their representative role, from the scheming religious leaders, to the gutless Roman authorities, the fickle crowd and finally even Jesus’ cowardly disciples including Judas who betrayed him. To find out more why not come along to a service this week, we would love to welcome you.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin

Church News

Way of the Cross The annual walk down the river sponsored by the Winchelsea inter-church committee will again be held on Good Friday (this coming Friday).

The walk commences at 10.30am, just below the mud brick shelter, and includes several stations on the way, where readings from the gospels about Christ’s passion are read, together with well known Easter hymns, and prayers, and

a time for reflection. Representatives of St. John’s Catholic Church, St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, and the Uniting Church will take turns leading the service. A copy of the service will be available for everyone to take part.

All are welcome to attend and be involved as this walk is common to all Christian traditions and denominations.

We end the walk at St. John’s Catholic Church, where we can share a morning tea with Hot Cross buns.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

We travelled to North Geelong this week hoping for some strong wins, unfortunately that was not to be. Only our B Grade team came away with a win, congratulations girls. However, there were still some positives to come home with and plenty to work on at training.A Grade North Geelong 45 def Winchelsea 43 Not the result we wanted this week, we had our chances and didn’t capitalise. Several changes were made to every position except the GD and GK. The changes were made to assist us in getting the ball down the court but none of these changes proved to be overly effective. We were chasing the whole game but didn’t give up and this attitude is what brought the game back to a 2 goal margin. An inexperienced mid court made some costly errors but our whole court defence forced a turnover that could have given us a draw. Not to be this week but full credit to Alisha Adams and Janelle Birch who worked tirelessly in defence for the full game. Best Players: Janelle Birch, Alisha Adams & Ciara Stewart

B Grade Winchelsea 36 def North Geelong 23 Awesome well deserved win for our B Grade Team. We started strong in all areas of the court and deflected 9 of North Geelong’s passes. A shaky second quarter with North Geelong making us pay and out scoring us by a1 goal. Elly Castles (replacing Belinda Czerniawski who was out injured this week) came on into GS and smashed it score 11/11 goals. Our defenders dominated the second half with great hands over the ball forcing North Geelong to only shoot at 50% accuracy. Great win and well earned. Best Players: Karly Honner, Sara Groves and Elly Castles

C Grade North Geelong 17 def Winchelsea 8 In quite a low scoring game we stayed within three goals of North Geelong until a blowout last quarter. Our good first half was a result of great defensive pressure by the defensive team of Lillian Kent, Halleshia Kirby and Lyndelle Dobson. We some some good centre court drives and lots of positives to take into the next game. A great team effort unfortunately not reflected on the score board.

Best Players: Lillian Kent & Lyndelle Dobson

D Grade North Geelong 31 Def Winchelsea 18 A huge improvement with this week’s game. Great defending from Josie McDonald, Kim Johnson and Tilly Campana. The centre court opened up much more this week which allowed us to drive for the ball. A great game but unfortunately no win this week. Best Players: Tilly Campana, Josie McDonald & Kim Johnson

15 & Under North Geelong 28 Def Winchelsea 27 A great game by all, strong improvement on last week. Strong leads by all and great defence by Connie Royal and Olivia Black. Rachel Boddington showed great strength in the midcourt. Our 13 & Under fill ins were impressive and really stepped up to the challenge. Ebony Berg and Caitlyn Burgess were a great combination in goals. Overall really good! Best Players: Rachel Bodding, Connie Royal and Olivia Black.

13 & Under North Geelong 37 Def Winchelsea 9 We came up against a very strong North Geelong today with tall accurate goalers which were hard for our new little team to combat. There were some very strong passages of play which we will work on and develop over the season. Best Players: Claire Mawson, Ieisha Brown and Emily Steed

Surf Coast moves to adopt new zonesSurf Coast Shire Council is seeking feedback on its proposed incorporation of Victoria’s new residential zones into the Surf Coast Planning Scheme.

In 2013 the Victorian Government released three new residential zones for Victoria that will replace all current residential zones. Council is proposing an approach that Surf Coast will maintain the status quo on residential planning as much as possible.

Anyone wanting to discuss the change can attend an open house session at the Anglesea Visitor Information Centre on the Great Ocean Road on Wednesday 23 April between 5pm and 7pm.

More information on the proposed change is available via www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au or by contacting Jorgen Peeters on 5261 0557.

The Winchelsea Blues traveled to North Geelong on Saturday to take on the reigning premiers.

SeniorsWith 5 players coming out of the team that defeated Bannockburn the week prior it was always going to be a big test to see how the Blues were shaping for the 2014 season. North Geelong got the jump on the Blues in the first quarter kicking four goals while Winchelsea went goalless.

The quality of the North Geelong side continued to shine throughout the match with Winchelsea down at 35 points at half time. Winchelsea tried hard to get back in the game however North Geelong were too strong and eventually ran out comfortable winners.

Brad Mackenzie relished the chance to go forward kicking 3 goals for the match. Drew Steven played a good supporting role also kicking 3 goals as well.

In his 100th Game Jeremy Sezun battled hard all day to continually make contests and put pressure on his North Geelong opponents. Brett Venables was also a standout from the team as too was Hayden Wilson and Kane Bonner.

With a week off now the Blues will regroup to take on Corio after the Easter break.

North Geelong 4.2-26 8.7-55 13.9-87 17.9-111

Winchelsea 0.1-1 3.2-20 6.4-40 10.6-66

Goal Kickers: B. MacKenzie 3, A. Steven 3, B. Trickey, S. Oliver, K. Bonner , G. McFarlane

Best Players: J. Sezun, B. Venables, B. MacKenzie, A. Steven, H. Wilson, K. Bonner

ReservesThe Reserves were also up against a quality team and started the game off brilliantly to be 4 points up at the quarter time break. Unfortunately in the 2nd quarter North Geelong were able to kick ahead with a strong forward line up. In the third quarter Winchelsea managed only 2 points and North Geelong were unable to be stopped from here and took the game out by 30points. Captain Hayden Stocks was taken from the field

with a suspected broken collarbone and will be missed over the coming weeks.

Michael Bourdouvalis and Kyall Wilson battled hard in defence all day to serve the team well while Derek Dobson & Luke Jablan made the most of their opportunities around the midfield.

North Geelong 2.2-14 6.7-43 8.8-56 10.9-69

Winchelsea 3.0-18 4.0-24 4.2-26 6.3-39

Goal Kickers: R. Sauni , C. Tournier , A. Hovey , L. Jablan , R. Biviano , D. Dobson

Best Players: M. Bourdouvalis, D. Dobson, L. Jablan, H. Lancaster, K. Wilson, T. Downes

Under 18’sIn the Under 18’s, goals were hard to come by in the 2nd of the Grading matches at Nth Geelong on Sat morning. Although the result was disappointing on the scoreboard, the endeavour shown by the Blues was pleasing throughout most of the 4 quarters.

The 18’s were again short on numbers, thanks to the Under 16’swho helped out . These boys had already played in a convincing win in the previous match, & again aquitted themselves well. The Under 18’s have a break this week. Regroup at Training Thursday 5 - 6.30. If you can’t make training - - - you know what to do !

Goals:(And What Goals They Were) K.Berg, J. Lubcke, Z . Moules, L. Stokes

Best: Jye Price, Kurt Berg, Zac Moules, Jonah Peters, Alex Stokes, Jarryd Lubcke.

On Wednesday last, 26 of our members took to the high seas !!!. No eye patches or cutlass, just an enjoyable trip from Winchelsea to Queenscliff to board the ferry to go to Sorrento. After a very smooth passage across the bay, we arrived at Sorrento to be met by the R.S.L.courtesy bus which relayed us to the R.S.L.Clubrooms where we were treated to a delightful Thai Lunch in the dining room which had been opened exclusively for us. Gordon Bubb receives his Certificate of Achievement

A wonderful day was had by many at the Pony and Horse Sports Day held at Leighdale Equestrian Center. The Show was extremely well run with a good turnout and the sun shining. My daughter rode a beautiful pony by the name of Malibu Park Moondust aka Sophie. Sophie performed superbly, moving around the area with her renowned grace and style. Spectators surprised when they found out that Sophie is in her twenty’s. Sophie looked a picture of health and shined for the judges who awarded her Champion in Pleasure mount, Champion in Best educated mount and reserve Champion in Rider. My daughter rode beautifully and could not take the smile off her face! (as can been seen in this photo). A great way to end her time with us as she has returned to her owner.

Supporting and attending Local Horse Shows, either as a spectator or competitor is a fun day out for the whole family.
