‘Bus To The Hub’ Christmas Party Discovers The Raw TruthAs the end of 2013 draws to a close and everyone reflects on the events and happenings of the past twelve months, it is with immense pride that we look upon the success of Winchelsea’s “Bus to the Hub” program.

We wrapped up 2013 with an amazing evening provided by the always generous and giving Winchelsea Lions Club and Hesse Rural Health Service. The evening was hosted in the courtyard of historical homestead “Wormbete”, property owner Tony Blakely kindly and graciously

allowed the group to enjoy their Christmas get together in the courtyard, decorated with lights and gold tinsel providing a lovely Christmas ambience.

Pre dinner drinks were served and everyone enjoyed each others company before tucking in to a great country cooked spit roast meal followed by delicious home made sweets and the popular Lions Club Christmas pudding. Following dinner Tony invited us to wander through the gardens at the front of this magnificent home.

As we were taking in the sites of the gardens there was a loud commotion at

the back of the house, a special guest had made a very grand entrance to an almost empty courtyard. Santa made time in his very busy schedule to pay us a visit.

Having good manners, Santa removed his boots to come through the house to the front garden and it was revealed then, he is currently working sooooo hard at this time of year to make sure everything is just right for Christmas Eve that he has actually worn a hole in his socks. gift to keep his big toes warm on those cold nights at the North Pole.

The jolly old man in red also had with him a sack of goodies and he had everyone in fits of laughter as he cursed the elves who had replaced the presents with Pizza’s for his long journey. It was here Santa discovered that the pizza was also missing, eaten by the elves. As pizza boxes were tossed high into the air and Santa again cursing those cheeky elves he came across another bag filled with sweets and chocolates which he shared around for everyone to enjoy.

And as quickly and brashly as he arrived he was gone, to sort out those pesky elves and make sure no more tricks will be played before Christmas.

Finishing off with tea and coffee and the most amazing chocolate-pistachio slice

made by Lynette Clark with her very own home grown pistachios, we were all full to the brim and the time had come to make our way home. After drawing our Christmas raffle and saying our thank you’s, three bus loads of very happy Christmas revellers were returned home safely.

On behalf of the WWW we would like to very sincerely thank the Winchelsea Lions Club & Lions Ladies, Hesse Rural Health Service, Winchelsea Community Bank, Main Street Milk Bar & Cafe, Winchelsea

Taxi Service, Winchelsea Football & Netball Club, Winchelsea Cricket Club and the Blakely Family for their support of the “Bus to the Hub” 2013.

A very special thank you to Annie & Andrew Coles, Michelle & Mick Stocks and Gary Drayton for giving of their time to drive and navigate the bus each Thursday night and to Murray Aisbett who joins us every week and is our on board entertainment and comedian providing fun and laughs for everyone.

The “Bus to the Hub” program is looking to expand our volunteer drivers and support people to ensure the continuation of the program next year. We would love interested community members to become a part of this fun group providing a social night out each Thursday evening. To register your interest please contact Annie at Hesse Rural Health Service on 5267 1200

The “Bus to the Hub” will take a break over the Christmas period and return again in 2014. The date will be advertised in the Winchelsea Sea.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Safe and Happy 2014.

Congratulations to Winchelsea Star 1 year on. Gabrielle ChamberlinA year ago a small percentage of the the Winchelsea population came together with the like mind to “Save the Star” we met at Joe’s pub and lamented the smallness of the numbers facing a big job.

Persistence prevailed and as I have read in the much revived Winchelsea Star; new and innovative ideas have reaped the reward of peer recognition, (CNAV awards in three catergories) a high achievment indeed. Congratulations to Mick O’Mara his feeling for his subject shines through all his articles.

I receive my Winchelsea Star via email, a very convenient form of “publishing”. I have not yet mastered the new download method, however the younger in my

family have, so nothing lost from this innovation.

I love the rabbit and follow his seasonal antics with amusment. Is his little red hat trimmed with ermine I wonder?. Every time I read on the acknowledgments page, Winchelsea Star Printed by Birregurra Store; I am visited by a vision of the old printer in the Star Office, Oh the long disscussions re it’s ifs buts and maybes, we had at Star meetings ( oops secrets revealed).

Another amusement I have is where is a budding editor? I read each week Deputy Editor; Volunteer Welcome, hey I was not so good that I was irreplaceable! Step up and grab the job, you will enjoy the experience and might be in line for a future promotion.

So many good stories I have read this year of life continuing in Winch and around, I look forward to renewing my subscription.

Life north of the divide in many ways is the same as the South West, it is the differences which open the mind. The amount of support for art, music and theatre in a gold mining town, as well asthe much publicised Stawell Gift athletics carnival. The same worries over dual highways and the lack of, the aging population (my peers) and the never ending question of jobs in the bush. These thing help to make up so many of our smaller towns. It is surprising how north and south of the great dividing range, problems are tackled head on; much the same as a small band of dedicated Winch Star readers did a year ago this month.

Congratulations to Winchelsea Star Commitee Members and Contributors it was a good read when Ileft and it is growing more and more into a great read.

Mason, Alex, Hank and Gabrielle send seasons greetings to all.

Church Newstap in time and know when to stop. Certain father’s on the other hand have been known to deliberately tap out of time!

Mainly music is so much fun we are never sure if it is the parent’s, the team or the children who enjoy it the most, but judging by the children’s reluctance to have a break it might be them. Mainly Music in Winchelsea has been run in cooperation between the churches of Winchelsea with the generous support of Waurn Ponds community church and Pastor Phil Shirley and his wife Julie leading our team. The local Community Bank also came to our aid when setting up the program by helping us with a grant towards the cost of carpeting the hall at St Thomas’ so the children and babies had a suitable surface to crawl on.

This program is so good for the children, helping them develop fine motor skills and coordination as well as exposing them to music from such a young age. Each week we also have morning tea with something healthy for the children followed by something a bit nice to spoil their parents. The program is not expensive costing only $5 each week per family, which is a real bargain. Some of our children are off to Kinder next year and so we will have room in the program for some new families. So you might like to come along and check out Mainly Music next year, it is also a great way for you to get to know other local young families. Mainly Music is in recess during January, recommencing at 10pm Monday the 3rd of February in the week that school goes back.

Here’s wishing you all a very blessed Christmas and a happy and safe New Year,

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin

St John’s ChurchChristmas Eve Mass will be celebrated by Father Philip Gambin at 6p.m. at St John’s in Winchelsea.

Bishop Vincent Long will celebrate 10a.m. Mass Christmas Day at Bannockburn. All of the children are invited to dress as their favourite Christmas Biblical character for Mass e.g. Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise kings angels etc.

On Wednesday January 1st at Meredith. At 7p.m. there will be Adult Faith Education in the church on the topic of Mary Mother of God. Mass will follow at 7.30p.m.

As we sit and write our Christmas cards out for friends and family, it is interesting to note that the word ‘safe’ is often added into our messages for ‘a happy Christmas, and best wishes for the coming year’. So from all of us at St John’s we wish you all a very happy, blessed and meaningful Christmas season with best wishes for a safe and wonderful year in 2014.

Thank you to the staff at the Winchelsea Star for all of the good work that they are doing in putting every edition of the Star together.

Until next time, God Bless Marg Bushell

PS. Tonight at the Uniting Church the Inter Church Christmas Carols and Readings Service prepared by John Bumford was very well attended and the sum of $196 dollars was collected to forward to the Christmas Bowl appeal. Thank you to John and Olive, to the ladies choir, the readers, and the ladies in the kitchen who prepared the supper for us. To all who attended thankyou.

Mainly Music We had a lovely break-up on Monday with the team giving the children gift bags to celebrate Christmas before we had our own team break-up at team member Jenny Bowker’s home. Over the past few weeks we have been having a selection of the children’s favorite songs and introducing some Christmas ones. One of my favorites which was also Keira’s choice was “five little Lady birds” It was so good to see all of the lady bird finger puppets that the ladies from around Winchelsea had knitted us, flying off the kids fingers as the song counted its way from five to zero. It ‘s also been lovely to see the children growing in confidence as they move to the rhythm of the songs.

This week John Bumford came along to see the program for the first time and he was most impressed by the participation of even the youngest babies in the songs. Another favorite of mine are the songs, like “Old Red Wagon” that use the tapping sticks and I am always amazed to see the way the littlies

With Christmas and holidays (for some) upon us, just a couple of reminders from your SFC01 NHW.

Recent events have indicated that we may be perceived as a ‘soft target’ by those who don’t believe the law applies to them. The violent break-in and theft of goods in our shopping centre several days ago is bad enough, but the theft of a community based fundraising effort was especially upsetting. And this was not an isolated example - the police reports in our newsletters this year indicate that theft, opportunistic or otherwise, is on the increase in our community – town and rural.

In our lovely little town, so many people comment on the terrific community spirit and connectedness we enjoy – it is a sad commentary that we need to take our personal, domestic and business security very seriously. This is especially so with the summer holiday period, when many of us spend time out and about and travelling away from home.

• Ensure you make arrangements with a neighbour or friend to keep an eye on

things at home and lock up securely when away,

• Be aware of what you leave on view in your home or vehicle – use a “VALUABLES REMOVED FROM THIS VEHICLE” card (available at the Police Station),

• Be conscious of your surroundings and who is about when out in the evenings,

• ‘Keep an eye out’ for each other – on the roads, in the surf, at the parties.

All the things we know will help to maximise our, and others’ security and allow us to enjoy our activities.

With the wonderful summer weather, the threat of fires is ever-present. Take note of CFA and Police warnings and fire restrictions. Make sure your fire plan is in place and well understood by all family members. Every fire period brings with it the risk of arson – be aware of what you see about you – “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING”.

With all the extra traffic on the roads, festive cheer and drinks and distances travelled, we all need to be extra careful

when driving around. The police will be out in force (to protect us from ourselves as much as anything!?), but it is our responsibility to do all we can to avoid traffic mishaps and let police know when we see something potentially dangerous on the roads.

On a happier note, we at Winchelsea NHW enjoyed some pleasant end-of-year activities – the ‘Newsletter Delivery Team’ morning tea at Philomena’s Winchelsea Tea Rooms, and our November (Christmas) Dinner meeting (and delicious it was, too!), also at the Tea Rooms.

We hope, by working to assist our great Police team here in Winch, that we have helped to keep our community aware of what is happening, and contributed to our overall safety and awareness.

Wishing everyone a joyful and safe festive season, relaxing holiday times and a happy and productive 2014.

Helen Verity –Co-ordinator.

You’ve cleared the gutters, cut back the grass and tackled the undergrowth – but that might not mean that you are fully prepared for fire this summer.

CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said research showed Victorians were great at carrying out the easy to do preparation tasks in the lead-up to the fire season.

“But it’s actions like talking to your CFA brigade about the risk where you live and making a decision with your family about when you’ll leave and where you’ll go that could save your life,” he said.

Fire risk varies from city fringe areas next to grassland to rural areas close to grass or bushland. For information on the risk in your area and tips on leaving early, you can talk to your local CFA brigade or visit cfa.vic.gov.au.

Fire planning and preparation should include a conversation with your household at the start of summer about when you will leave before a fire and where you will go. You also need to decide where you will shelter if you get caught out and cannot leave your property or area.

“Make sure everyone you live with knows these plans, so you’re all clear about what you’ll do on a fire risk day,” Mr Ferguson said.

“You should also pack an emergency kit at the start of summer so you’re ready to go any time. This should include important paperwork and essentials like mobile phones, medications, change of clothes and water. If your kit is already packed, it’s easier to grab it and go.

“Finally, remember to talk to friends, family and neighbours who may need help leaving early before a fire,” he said.

“The responsibility for surviving the fire

season is shared between emergency services and the community – we all share the responsibility for our community’s safety,” he said.

Mens Shed ProjectI would like to thank Stuart Forbes for designing a seat around my Oak Tree before Christmas, and also thanks to the boys who put it together - John, Graham, Colin, Don, Hughie.

Wonderful job, it looks great.

June Rowe

Again it was one of those beautiful days when you think nothing could possibly go wrong. But, so often, it does!

The curtain raiser to disaster was a battered camper van coming up the driveway of our Jackson St. car yard. It was wearing Northern Territory number plates. Out jumped the driver. “I’ve had enough of this thing. I want some thing with power but don’t have any money. Have you got a V8 that I could do an even swap.”

Well we did have an old Falcon V8 trade-in that we had been wondering what to do with. This could be the opportunity

so I jumped into the camper’s driver’s seat to assess the situation. Yes it was dirty and untidy but it would clean up all right and there would be a dollar or two in it.

While I was sitting there I felt I was been watched. I looked around and there was a dingo pup chained to the table. My guess was that it was about six months old. As soon as it saw me looking, it cringed and tried to hide. Being a dog lover my heart went out to it. The pup gave every indication of having a very hard time.

I jumped out of the camper and the haggling started. The deal agreed was a pretty-much even swap, the camper for the Falcon, we kept the registration plates that he didn’t want because

he was heading back to the Alice and we gave him $200. We could cash the plates in for more than $200 so that was OK. He could also keep his NT reg plates as they were of no use to us. A sticking point was how did he drive the Falcon away without registration? I made an executive decision that the car was to be put outside our front gate and he could do what he liked with

it. The deal being agreed upon the ex-camper owner transferred his possessions, including the pup, to the Falcon.

“Would you like to buy a dingo? She’s for sale. $600.”

I could imagine what the reaction of Ian Raynor, and his sheep, would be if a real live dingo came to live alongside of them. No, even though I felt very sorry for the pup, I didn’t want it, so, contented client, Falcon and dingo headed off to the Alice and out of our lives.

Well, that’s what we thought!

...to be continued.

Bunyips CaveHi Kids, Well, the big day has finally arrived and I bet you are all very excited this week - school and kinder has finished for the year, you are on holidays and Santa is on his way. I hope you all have a very happy Christmas and have lots of fun over the holidays. I would love to have some pictures after Christmas or some stories, as my mailbox is still empty!

So please send in your pictures, stories, puzzles, jokes etc. and put them in my mailboxes. Don’t forget they are at the Winchelsea School Office and the IGA supermarket.

The greatest story on Earth. St Luke’s history of Jesus’ birth. Wonderfully set to music by our John Bumford.

What an amazing night we all enjoyed whether singing or listening “and the angel said” was music to our ears and joy to our hearts.

As a choir member it was probably as close as we will come to singing like angels whilst here on Earth.

Thank you John for a wonderful

experience and reminding us the true meaning of Christmas, peace on Earth and love for one another. May the message be heard all over the world. Closer to home we will need more chairs in the Globe Theatre next time and maybe two evenings performances.

Blessings to all, Joan McKenzie, “Kalimna”

And the Angel said

There comes a time when the Christmas lights just have to be turned on. In our family, that’s two weeks before the Big Guy’s birthday. I know that leaves 14 days of Christmas but I’ve never been one to let a song sung once a year dictate the what, when, how or where of matters affecting internal decor. That said, perhaps I should have taken a little longer than I did to get the lights on…

With Audrey having taken the kids to visit their grandfather, I thought I’d surprise them upon their return with the tree fully up and functional. I started around 8:3opm which meant darkness was imminent. So, first things first – I would have to break down and change the light globe in the room where the tree was to go that I had been putting off doing for some time. No big deal, I thought.

Now, in my defence, I had never changed this light globe before as it was only 6 months old and to my eyes it looked like the standard format of light suspended under fan arrangement. So, in the darkening room, I began to unscrew the moulded glass thingy the globe was behind. To my surprise, the whole light housing began to twist. “Oh,” I thought, “That’s unusual.” But I kept twisting and twisting and thinking to myself, “Hmm, this is an unusually long thread.” Indeed it was.

And just as I was about to give up this technique and look for other options, the power went out in the half of the house I was in. Yes, in changing a light globe, I had shorted out half a house and the light housing was now totally in my hand in the pitch black and I could still feel wires connecting it to

the rest of the fan body. All this while standing on a ladder four feet off the ground.

Hmm. I retrieved my phone from my pocket, turned it on and shone the torch up to verify that, yes, wires were in fact still connecting the light to the fan body. I realigned the thread and began re-screwing. Then I climbed down from the ladder and checked the fuse box. Yep – a switch had been tripped.

Audrey and the kids came home to candles. Next day, the electrician comes around in the afternoon. He was a big burly manly man with a tool belt, gizmos and an annoying way of not hiding his disbelief. “So, let me get this straight – you were changing a light globe?” Even thirteen days out from Christmas he seemed to have a complete lack of yuletide spirit.

An hour and $100 later and he has fixed the problem and taught me how to change my light bulb.

Let the festivities begin. Merry Christmas to all.

Jokes of the WeekQ: Q: Why does Santa have a garden? A: So he can hoe, hoe, hoe! Q: Why did the dog hang up his stocking at Christmas? A: He was waiting for Santa Paws.

Another year has passed And we’re all a little older. Last summer felt much hotter, And winter seems much colder.

There was a time not long ago When life was quite a blast. Now I fully understand About ‘Living in the Past’

We used to go to weddings, Football games and lunches. Now we go to funeral homes And after-funeral brunches.

We used to have hangovers, From parties that were crazy. Now we suffer body aches, We’re sleepy and we’re lazy.

We used to go out dining, And couldn’t get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a pill.

We used to often travel To places near and far. Now we get sore asses From riding in the car.

We used to go to nightclubs And drink a little booze. Now we stay home at night And fall asleep watching the news.

That, my friend is how life is, And now my tale is told. So, enjoy each day and live it up. Before you’re too damned old.

Senior Citizens NewsAs once again we approach the time of year when we celebrate Christ’s Birth, I am disheartened when I see the low number of people in our churches, shops full of people buying presents, hotels full with merry makers, all celebrating Xmas. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all, Secretary Jean.LIMERICK OF THE WEEKLast Saturday, my friend Heather Came into the shop for a blether. We gossiped and wailed some extrordinary tales. That she knocked me down with a feather.!! RECIPE OF THE WEEK HAM and CHICKEN/TURKEY PIEThis is great to use with leftovers to serve with a salad.2 cups Plain Flour 1/2 teaspoon Mustard powder 1/4 teaspoon Salt 3/4 cup Butter 3 Tablespoons natural Yoghurt Dill sprigs to garnish. FILLING1/4 cup Butter 1/4 cup Plain Flour 2/3 cup Milk 2/3 cup natural Yoghurt 2 small Leeks sliced 250g diced Chicken or Turkey Breast 250g diced Ham Salt and Pepper

Grease a loose bottomed flan tin. Sift together the flour, mustard powder and salt and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in enough yoghurt to make a firm and non-sticky dough. Wrap in foil and chill.Melt 2 Tablespoons of the butter in a small pan over a medium heat. Blend in the flour then pour on the milk and yoghurt, stirring all the time for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and transfer the sauce to a bowl and leave to cool.Melt the remaining butter in a small pan and fry the leeks for 2 - 3 minutes until they begin to soften.Stir the leeks into the white sauce, add the chicken and ham, and cook for 3 minutes until the chicken has changed colour. Add the seasoning and leave to cool completely.Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured board. Use just over half of it to line the prepared tin. Pour in the cold filling. Roll out the remaining pastry and cover the pie. Trim the edges and press them together. Brush the top with milk. Re-roll the pastry trimmings and cut into decorative shapes, such as leaves or stars. Arrange the shapes over the pie and brush with milk. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 35 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Serve hot or cold. Enjoy!!

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page.Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted.Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

And what a remarkable year it has been! As a relatively new “group” to Winchelsea, we have had an amazing beginning. Formerly known as the Community Building Initiative (CBI) we took on a new identity, new members and new projects to help make Winchelsea the best place to live. As an umbrella group to all community groups and organisations in Winchelsea we have developed important and very fruitful partnerships with a large number of groups and organisations to develop incredible outcomes for our community

WWW Mission‘To connect and collaborate with the Winchelsea community and related partners, and provide a central reference point and a united voice advocating sustainable local outcomes’

A word from WWW Chairperson Rosie:As 2013 comes to a close, I would like to share with you one of my proudest moments, which, coincidentally, happened in the past week.

I attended the Winchelsea Primary School Grade 6 Graduation and shared the Graduates favourite memories of their year. It was heartwarming to hear at least 3 students list the time that they have spent with their Mentors, amongst those memories. The Mentoring Program is a project of Working With Winchelsea Group.

As the Chairperson of Working With Winchelsea, it has been my privilege to work alongside some amazingly Community spirited folk. It is fair to say though, that early in the year, we took a bit of time to gain momentum and define our role in the Community.

We have now put some runs on the board, and have some exciting projects underway. The mentor program at the Primary School called The Fifth Finger, aims to provide another level of support to children transitioning to secondary School, and is a work in progress. Hearing the children speak fondly about this program at the Graduation was very encouraging.

Our Bus to the Hub program is an inspirational idea, transporting our more Senior members of the Community to the Eastern Reserve every Thursday night for a meal. The benefits to everyone concerned are becoming more and more obvious every week.

The Men’s Health Night was a resounding success and will be an annual event.

I am proud to be associated with WWW, and am sure that we will come back in 2014 with bright ideas to help with our Community Wish List.

WPS Mentor Program: Providing funding and support for community mentors to assist with the transition of Year 6 Winchelsea Primary School Students from our relatively small rural school to much larger secondary schools in the city.

Two mentors from The Fifth Finger program share their views :

Lauren Humphries Being a mentor this year for 3 wonderful girls from the primary school has been a rewarding and humbling experience. I was quite unsure as to what I would have to offer. Many of the other mentors seemed to have so many skills, hobbies and activities to get the children involved in. And my life unfortunately at the moment is consumed with work and home renovations, not really an exciting mix! The first time I headed down to the school, I must admit I was feeling quite daunted. Upon meeting with the girls I soon came to the realisation that I did in fact have a range of different life experiences to share with them. I found the girls enjoyed my positive view of the world, and we shared a love for all things animals, which I had developed from a young age growing up on a farm. Having myself had to move away from friends and family to attend university, I found I could relate to the anxiousness of moving to a different school, and starting a new chapter in their life. I now look forward to being available to share the journey into high school with the girls and after attending their school graduation felt very proud that I have been able to be part of their grade 6/year 7 journey.

Jenny Mathison. The question put to me was “What is it like to be a mentor to six Grade 6 Primary School girls?” (There were 5 adults for 6 girls) In short, different. It is a while since I had long conversations with young girls this age. I frequently had to remember they are not young children and not quite adults but their conversation could be thought provoking. It has been interesting reflecting on the day of our first get together when we took them for a planned session to the gym and then sat around with hot chocolate

afterward, to the day of the last session when we took the whole of grade 6 to Werribee Park. In particular, they talked freely with us, called us by name and said they looked forward to meeting up with us at a planned meeting when they have been to Secondary School for a few weeks when they will tell us of the highs and lows of this new period of their life. What is mentoring like?……”both parties getting to know and trust each other.”

The success of any community project comes from the support and assistance of community volunteers . Working With Winchelsea and its many partners are always on the lookout for community minded people. If you have time, interest or expertise in any area please contact us at [email protected], we welcome anyone who would like to support us.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the generosity and support of Hesse Rural Health Service, Winchelsea Community Bank, Winchelsea Lions Club, Winchelsea Community House, Winchelsea Football Club, Winchelsea Cricket Club, Winchelsea BTA, Surf Coast Shire Councillors and Council. Winchelsea Taxi Service, Winchelsea Primary School, Barwon Adolescent Task Force, Geelong and all of the magnificent volunteers who have assisted with projects in any way over the past 12 months.

A special thank you to Robyn Lucas, Community Development Officer of Surf Coast Shire who was instrumental in getting WWW on it’s feet.

In closing the Working With Winchelsea Group would like to wish the Winchelsea and surrounding areas a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

The 2013grade 6 students at Winchelsea Primary School got together for their graduation on Wednesday the 18th of December. For the first time ever the function was held at ‘the Hub” at Eastern Reserve with the catering by the footy club, who presented a fabulous meal as usual.

Eastern Reserve was a fantastic venue to have the graduation with lots of room and lots of invited guests. Technology played an important part in the night with one of the students who had moved to Roma, Queensland earlier in the month joining in the whole evening via Skype.

The students each gave a speech with thanks given for early morning wake ups and the making of lunches. They also detailed their plans for the future and

where they are off to secondary school. Everyone did a terrific job.

The awards were distributed with much anticipation as the students held their breath to see who would be recognised for their strengths.

A Gym is not all hard work.Sarah, instructor at the Winchelsea Health Club aka the “gym” at the Hub, suggested that she would like to run a Christmas party. Notices went up, room was booked with the Shire, members brought food to share and the room filled with much hilarity. One would think food would be all healthy but what a spread for all tastes. ....and plenty for the sweet tooth.

Special thanks to Santa who dropped in looking for directions to the Playgroup and added to the morning by joining in our group photo. What a most welcome addition to our party.

The Star takes a break over ChristmasWe are taking a break over the Christmas period, but not for long!

This is the final edition for 2013 - The Star returns for 2014 on January 22. Copy deadline for The Star is 4pm every Sunday. Happy to take submissions over the break. Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year !
