Letter to the EditorThank you Mick O’Mara for your call to people to explain why they believe – or not – in climate change. For me it is basically this: it took millions of years for the atmosphere to reach the point where seasons were reasonably predictable, with temperatures that supported the huge biodiversity in flora and fauna on our planet.

But in the last 200 years or so we have dug up and chopped down and burnt carbon and flung it back into our fragile atmosphere thus changing the chemistry back toward the more unstable conditions of eons past.

We are having more and more intense extreme weather events around the world, seasons are not so predictable and thousands of species are on the threatened or endangered list. Humans are just another species but the one that must change behavior to stop this impending disaster.

We need a public conversation that “connects the dots” between extreme events and climate change and we need to talk more about our impact on the climate, rather than electricity prices and taxes. Our very existence depends on it.

From the Editor in New Zealand!Fifteen months ago, 9 people volunteered to keep the community paper going because they thought it was an important part of the community. The committee set about re organising the structure and administration of the Star organisation as well as the weekly task of producing the paper.

One year on, we have changed our place of printing twice, improved the layout, standardised advertising, updated the technology used, added email subscriptions, prepared a new constitution, had two of the original 9 members replaced by new volunteers AND printed the Star each week. The success of our efforts were confirmed by our peers when we were successful in three categories at the CNAV conference in October.

The Annual general meeting, to be held on Thursday, is an opportunity for the community to come along and show their appreciation of the committee’s efforts. It is also a chance to ask questions and suggest ideas that we can try, to keep the Star interesting. There will be a new set of rules proposed and a committee elected.

Our growing community has people with a diverse range of talents, many of which could be of benefit to the Star and the more people involved, the less input is required from each.

Think about becoming involved.

The fire quickly escalated to a “Stage 2” response with multiple sectors being independently managed, the grass fire started in the corner of a remote paddock and spread towards several houses and properties. One of the first structures encountered was a hay-shed, which has been completely destroyed. The hay has been estimated to burn for days and possibly weeks - it would take huge quantities of water to extinguish.

Two large helitacks were also involved, dumping thousands of litres of water at each pass. The helicopters concentrate mostly on protecting assets such as homes and buildings, and are awesome in action. Filling in seconds and dropping water in less, they are skillfully and aggressively piloted in the smoke, wind and heat-buffeted air.

CFA brigades were involved from a very wide area - Winchelsea, Wurdale, Freshwater Creek, Geelong, Inverleigh, Modewarre, Bannockburn, Grovedale and of course Gnarrwarre whose doorstep

the fire was running, and other brigades. The great majority of these tankers and vehicles are crewed by volunteers, who gave up their Saturday afternoon to defeat what could easily have been a threat to towns such as Inverleigh.

Mid-afternoon a “Red Flag” warning was officially issued, cautioning everyone on the fireground that a significant wind-change was imminent. About half an hour later, the wind-change arrived and if not accompanied by heavy rain could have been disastrous - very strong gusts flared burning embers and pushed smouldering pine cones and manure along the ground. It was easy to see how the grass fire could re-ignite and take off in a completely different direction.

The overall commander of the situation at the scene, Graham Harvey, was very happy with the CFA performance over the day. There had been no loss of property other than the hay-shed, and no loss of livestock, and most importantly no injuries or worse to people. The safety of

personnel and civilians is the number one priority for the CFA fireground crews.

It was interesting to note that at least one property made it extremely difficult to move from one paddock to another, with only a single gate in at awkward locations. This property at least will have lost a lot more fence posts than necessary due to the loss of time in moving around by CFA trucks. This same property saw one of its occupants out fighting the fire in thongs, an odd choice of footwear for walking on burning grass.

The stormy weather, which had started the conflagration, was a big help in controlling and extinquishing it too. Driving rainstorms left the ground soaking wet (and the crews, it should be noted). However, burning fenceposts and tree trunks still needed to be hunted out and doused. This “blacking out” usually takes longer than putting out the fire, and is why you will see CFA trucks slowly cruising around even when everything seems to finished.

Lightning Sparks Major Response

Pictured (l-r): Spraying along the fire edge, Helitack heading round afer refill, Wurdale tanker refilling from a dam, CFA crews debrief and enjoy some hot food.

A bolt of lightning was found to be responsible for one of the largest grass fires in recent years in Region 7 (headquarterd in Winchelsea), in the Gnarwarre and Buckley area.

With the warning from the previous committee in mind that, because of pressure of work, committee members wouldn’t be able to take holidays, the first principle that we established was that there be two people for every job. That this plan has been such a great success is illustrated by our editor, Stewart, being over in New Zealand for the last couple of weeks but you have still been able to read the Star because our compositors have stepped up. We have two treasurers, Mick and Cathy, someone to fill in as secretary

if Tony is away, two compositors, Stu and Tony, three distributors, Jean, John and Don, and only one advertising manager, Neil, because Mason has moved away. We need to replace Mason and would welcome any other interested people. We have lots of jobs available.

Our first difficult decision was colour. Before this committee took over the front page had been done at the hospital because the Star printer couldn’t handle colour. However the Star owed the hospital $3000 for previous front pages and unfortunately the Star’s bank balance stood at about $750. The problem was discussed with hospital CEO Peter, who stated that if it meant that the Star become insolvent if it paid what was owing, he would prefer it not to be paid. Money from previous advertising began to flow in and the hospital was paid. It was decided to print in black and white until our financial position became clearer. Thank you Peter for your understanding.

Next problem was the printer. It was past its “use by” date. Print was awful and we could never be sure it would finish a print run. However there was still 12 months @ $1200 per month to run on the contract. We managed to negotiate a payout sum with Ricoh and the Star was printed under contract at the Birre General Store for the latter part of last year. As of this year the Star is now printed locally at Mudgroup.

Tony and Stu turned out to be absolutely brilliant as compositors and we are very proud of our product. So proud that we would love to see half of Winchelsea come to our Annual General Meeting next Thursday 7:30 PM at the Hub to congratulate us on our achievements. Unfortunately we could only book the small room at the Hub so if half Winchelsea come we won’t be able to fit you all in, but come any way.

REMEMBER: WINCH STAR AGM. 7:30 THURS 20TH. THE HUB

One Year onA little over a year ago a new committee was elected to produce the Winch Star. I was one of those elected. Two of us were on the original committee that set up the Star and one of the previous committee remained. In effect we were all raw beginners. What a ride it has been!

Difficulty Coping with Hearing Loss?Do you have a hearing aid gathering dust in a forgotten drawer?

Do you have difficulty hearing the TV?

Are you struggling with hearing loss and beginning to feel increasingly frustrated and isolated?

Have you tried to use your hearing aid but find it ‘doesn’t work’?If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. Others suffer the same sort of problems, and many of these people meet weekly during term time in a group lead by tutors from Better Hearing Australia, Geelong Branch.

One of the main functions of this group is to meet others in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, listen to and discuss problems and ideas, and generally support each other.

Better Hearing Australia, is a not- for - profit Australia wide organization which provides community support services of rehabilitation to help people manage with hearing loss.

The Geelong branch offers information and support with trained leaders providing information, assisting with hearing aid use and care, lip reading instruction and practice, development of helpful communication strategies, knowledge of the current available assistive devices ( eg specific headphones to help with hearing TV) and leading general discussions. We do not sell hearing aids.

Meetings are held weekly, during school term time, from 11 - 12am on Mondays at 89 Autumn Street, Geelong West. You are most welcome to attend.

For further information and enquiries: phone 52788300 during office hours which are, Mondays 9am - 2pm and Tuesdays 12 - 5pm.

Following an article in the Star by Councillor Rod Nockles re. 100 years since World War 1 any interested members of our community were asked to a meeting to discuss the possibility of applying for a grant to commemorate this event. $125 thousand dollars is being provided for our shire for this purpose and we are hoping to receive a part of this funding.

A meeting on Thursday 6th March was attended by Councillors Rod Nockles, Heather Wellington, Kevin Bennett (RSL), Jenny O’Conner (RSL), Charlie Earl, Sandra Jones (BTA), Helen Verity (WWW), June Rowe (VIC), John Caldow, Ken Daniels (Historical Society), Stephen Woods (RSL) to discuss possible funding and how it would be used.

Different possible locations for commemorative walks, gardens, parks, plaques etc. were discussed and it was agreed to meet on site at the bluestone bridge on Monday 10th to have a look at possible sites. There were two possible sites discussed including near the gun at the rotunda, on the north side of the highway where Vicroads will be reinstating a curved pathway beside the new bridge and a walkway between the two -under the bridge.

More discussion will be had at the shire on Tuesday and if you are interested in

contributing to the discussion it will be on the agenda at the Business And Tourism meeting Wednesday 12th 7.pm at the Hub. You are more than welcome to come along.

Application for funding needs to be in by May so time is short.

No this is not the one with the golden arches, but at the Heavy Haulage site on the outskirts of Winchelsea. This site was chosen as our previous site at the old petrol station opposite the Winchelsea Medical Centre was no longer feasible due to the construction of the duplication of the Princes Highway. So at 2pm on Friday afternoon once again the SES -Winchelsea Unit set up base with tables and chairs, Marque, and Lights for the evening session along with our two Rescue vehicles, for it is essential that though we are providing a much needed service to the public, the Unit must be ready to attend a call if required,

The purpose behind the Driver Reviver Site is to provide Coffee, Tea, Cordial and Biscuits to drivers, so that drivers, families, groups will be able stop have a drink as

well as chat and laugh with each other and the volunteers, oh, and a pat of the faithful companion --we provide water for them as well.

The coffee and tea come with the courtesy of the Bushells Coffee and Bushells Tea who are the Major National Sponsor- with the biscuits from the Arnotts Foundation, to whom we give heartfelt thanks., as this could mean that by stopping for that five minutes that an accident may have been avoided.

Driver Reviver sites number over 200 nationally, with them being manned by a number of volunteer organisations, with the SES numbered amongst them.

The tradition of providing refreshments by Arnotts and Bushells to travellers started back the 1880’s with Arnotts supplying biscuits to travellers coming by ship to Australia, whilst Bushells started with tea for early travellers out to the Goldfields.

On Labour Day Monday the Unit was back in its old staging place at the Mud Brick Hut where the playground was put to good use, lunch was eaten to the sound of the raucous corellas , and the background sound of the traffic becomes muted.

Thanks to our sponsors; Bushells and Arnotts as well as the SES organisation who give us and every unit support and encouragement to perform this very valuable community service.

Recipe of the Week

Shoulder of Lamb

2 Tablespoons Butter, plus extra for greasing

1 Kg Potatoes thinly sliced

1 Tablespoon chopped fresh Thyme

500g Onions thinly sliced

2 Garlic cloves thinly sliced

1Kg boneless shoulder of lamb

2 1/4 cups Meat or Vegetable Stock

Salt and Pepper

Preheat oven to 200c. Grease an ovenproof dish with butter. Make a layer of potatoes on the base of the dish, season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with a little of the thyme and cover with a layer of onions and garlic. Continue making layers until all these ingredients have been used. Make a few incisions in the lamb with a small sharp knife, place it on top of the vegetables and season with salt and pepper. Pour the stock into the dish, dot the lamb with the butter and roast, basting the potatoes occasionally, for 30 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven and cover with a sheet of foil, then return it to the oven and roast for 30 - 45 minutes more. Let the meat stand, without uncovering it, for about 10 minutes before serving. Serves 6.

An amazing sight from the Gnarwarre fire. It was reliably reported by the Winch Star roving reporter that a CFA tanker was seen to be progressing at high speed over the burnt area at Gnarwarre until it reached the burning haystack where it screeched to a halt. Then all volunteers aboard abandoned the tanker and rushed as close as they could to the burning hay where they did slow piroettes to the fire, warming first their front halves and then their backs. They were frozen stiff!

Monday the 24th of March Mainly Music at 10pm as usual.

Sunday the 30th of March This is advance notice that being the fifth week of the month, we will be having our combined Anglican parish service at 11am at St Thomas’ followed by a bring and share luncheon. We will also have a visiting preacher the Rev’d John Minotti who was until last year the vicar of St Peter’s in Ocean Grove along with “All Saints” in Barwon Heads.

On Sunday at St Thomas’ we enjoyed the company of our Uniting Church “cousins” and we also used our new pew and lectern Bibles for the first time. The vestry decision to replace the existing pew Bibles was brought about by the desire to keep our focus on the Bible at St Thomas and the worn out appearance of the previous ones that had served the church well for many years. We have opted to go with the 2011 edition of the New International Version of the Bible, which is an up to date good and reliable translation. The new Bibles use a large font size so they will be comfortable for most people to read easily.

Food for thought. The readings on Sunday focused our attention on some of the most well known verses in our scriptures. Beginning with the call of Abraham, in Genesis 12:1-4. These verses reveal God’s first step in his plan to rescue humanity from the mess of our rebellion. Amongst the promises given to Abraham was the promise that “through him all the peoples of the world would be blessed’. As Christians we believe that this promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ who was humanly speaking a descendant of Abraham. And in our New Testament reading from the third chapter of the gospel of John we read the most famous of all verses and one that sums up the fulfillment of that promise to Abraham yet the next verse has been a favorite of mine! Check them out below and may you discover the loving impact of God’s salvation plan in your life this week.

John 3:16 New International Version (NIV) “16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him”.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin.

Recount by Matilda Salmon - Grade 1

Yesterday after school Bella and Cooper came to my house and they got off the bus with me.

First part was getting our name ticked off. Then the second part was to line up. Then the third part was walking out to the bus. Then the fourth part was getting on the bus and I got half way down the aisle. Then the fifth part was going home and having a good time.

The Wild Guinea Pig by Jamie Phelps - Gr 3/4

One day the owner left the cage door open when the guinea pig was eating. The guinea pig went upstairs to get some grass (there was a grass farm).

He wanted to have an adventure so he went into the house he didn’t make any noise so the family couldn’t hear him. He went to a bedroom and he found a biscuit under the bed he gobbled it and it was very yummy. It was very quiet but he hear footsteps. It was the girls mum she was going to bed.

He went back out then the mum stepped right beside him he let out a big squeal!!! Then she put him in a cat cage. A cat came up and unlocked the cage. The guinea pig ran through the cats legs and went into the kitchen. Then he found where they kept the carrots. He took them back to the cage and stayed there.

Writers of the week

Hi Kids,

I heard the pool closed last week. Aren’t we lucky to have such a great facility in our town? Hope you all went along and had some fun on the last day it was open. This little bunyip is very sad because none of you send in your pictures or stories any more. I would love to hear from you and then you can tell me what you have all been up to. I miss out otherwise and never hear any news! So please, send in your pictures, stories, puzzles, jokes etc. and put them in my mailboxes, as they are so empty! Don’t forget they are at the Winchelsea School Office and the IGA supermarket.

Jokes of the WeekQ. What dog keeps the best time? A. A watch dog!

Q. What did one flea say to the other? A. Should we walk or take a dog?

Bunyip’s Tip of the Week ‘Buckle up’ whenever you are in the car!

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page.Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Over the next weeks the Unit is gong to be fairly busy, with a combined training night with the Wurdale Fire Brigade. As both units are often called out at the same time, it is essential that both emergency services have an understanding of what our roles are, and how we can help each other not only in times of emergencies, but during the quiet times.

Another event which will see two of our members participating is the 2014 Australasian Police and Emergency Service Games, being held in April at various venues throughout Melbourne and Geelong. The athletes are drawn from various law enforcement agencies, fire services, ambulance and volunteer emergency units, and are coming from New Zealand, Papua and New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.

There will also be a small team assisting at the Triathlon which is being held in Geelong.

Any of the public are welcome to visit the events being held, to see top level athletes participating.

I will include further details in the next edition of the ‘Winchelsea Star.’
