For years, you worked alongside your grandfa-ther in his garden and enjoyed the fruits of his la-

bor. Now that your grandfather has decided to giveup gardening, you’d like to continue the traditionin your own backyard. Here are some tips to en-sure you get your vegetable garden off to a goodstart.

Select the proper site for your garden. Vegetablesrequire good soil, wa-ter and light. Takesome samples of soilfrom the areas you areconsidering and havethem tested. This willtell you what the pH ofthe soil is and whatyou need to do to ad-just it. The ideal sitewould require verylittle amending. Itwould also have aspigot nearby, or bet-ter yet, a sprinkler youcan run on a timer.Don’t select a site faraway from the spigotand waste time run-ning back and forthwith a watering can.Make sure the site youchoose receives eighthours of full sun per

day. Any less than that, and your vegetables maysuffer.

Prep the site accordingly. Till up all of the grassand mix in some fertilizer and compost to enrichthe soil. Slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer anda couple inches of compost are ideal. These willadd nutrients to the soil and improve drainage. Ifyou need to adjust the pH, you may add the amend-ments now. Water the soil thoroughly to help thefertilizer dissolve into the soil.

Choose the right plants. Some vegetables areeasier to grow than others. Some are hardier thanothers. Some are more suited to areas than others.Find out what will work best for your situation andselect disease-resistant varieties. Some of the easieroptions may include carrots, cucumbers, greenbeans, herbs, lettuce, peas, peppers, spinach, squashand tomatoes. You could plant seed, but since youare just beginning, you might have better results ifyou buy seedlings. Start off small with a few plantsand add to your garden over time as you gain moreexperience and become more confident.

Plant at the appropriate time. While some plantscan be put out in the early spring, others must beput out after the first frost. Find out when the besttime is to plant and do so carefully, following thedirections on the labels, spacing out the plants prop-erly and watering them well. If you are plantingseeds, you should keep the soil moist until theysprout. You may then let the soil dry out some.

Tend to your garden with care. Water and weedit regularly. The soil should remain somewhat damp;if it is continually dry, you should water it moreoften. To retain moisture, consider adding somemulch around plants. Provide ample support. Usetrellises for cucumbers or peas and cages for toma-toes. These will provide support, and in some cases, may even protect the plants from rabbits and othernibblers.

Starting a vegetable garden takes time. Don’t rushit. Speak to experienced gardeners and follow theiradvice. Before you know it, you will have a gardenyou’re proud of.

Q: I am nearly 52 years old and have inherited a marble sculpture of asleeping lamb. My family used it as a doorstop when I was a child. I do notsee any markings on it, but wonder if it has any monetary value and, if so,how much? - Pat, Willmar, Minn.

A: Although you didn’t include an image, I suspect what you have is apiece of cemetery art. Throughout the Victorian era, the graves of infants andchildren often were marked with marble statues of sleeping lambs. As I haveoften said in this column, cemeteries are never abandoned, and it is neverproper to take anything from one, no matter how neglected the site appears.Because of this, I make it my policy to never assist in determining the valuesof such items.

Help KittyThink Inside the BoxDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding the letter from

a reader (Frustrated in Philadelphia) whose cat wassoiling on top of her bed: I didn’t get the impressionthat the person was keeping the cat in a cage as amatter of course, but rather was doing that, or con-sidering doing it, as a result of the kitty relieving her-self on the bed.

Therefore, I wonder if the kitty wasn’t doing thatbecause of a urinary tractinfection or other healthproblem, or didn’t like thetype of cat litter used, thelocation of the litter boxor something else in thehome that was probablystressing her.

By Sam Mazzotta

Just wanted to bring up these possibilities, for whatit’s worth. — Jonathan N., Mayer, Ariz.

DEAR JONATHAN: My thanks — advice and sug-gestions from my readers is always welcome and worth-while! Frustrated in Philadelphia should certainly dis-cuss the possibility of a health issue, like a urinary tractinfection, with her cat’s veterinarian, and bring her infor a complete checkup.

Litter-box location can be an issue with some cats,as can multiple cats sharing a litter box. An owner deal-ing with a cat “going” in areas other than the litter boxcould try placing a clean litter box over thearea of the latest mess (after cleaning it upof course) and then gradually move it awayand back to a more desirable location.

Cats also react to stresses we humans

might not notice or see as a stressful situation. Payclose attention to a cat’s behavior, particularly whenit’s exhibiting problem behaviors like soiling out-side the litter box, and see if it is reacting to a per-son, a new item in the home or something else.

RICHMOND, Va. — The prevailing view is thatthe Aaron’s 499, run at Talladega Superspeedwayand won by Kevin Harvick, was a NASCAR clas-sic.

It all depends on the perspective, or so saidHarvick’s Richard Childress Racing teammate ClintBowyer, who fin-ished seventh in thatrace.

“It was boring as far as my situation went,” said Bowyer. “Irode around in the back and snuck in and got a decent finish outof it. That’s the only way I can get a good finish there.

“I hate doing it. It’s boring and no good for your sponsor andeverything else. But ... I needed to get a good finish.”

Now, one week later, Harvick is the Sprint Cup point leader,Jeff Burton is ninthand Bowyer 12th,meaning that all threeare in position tomake the Chase. That, of course, isstill 16 races away.

Only a Cup regu-lar since 2006,Bowyer has alreadymade the Chasetwice, finishing thirdin 2007 and fifth in

2008. All three RCR drivers made the Chase in 2008. None didso in 2009.

Bowyer, who will turn 31 this month, has collected threetop-10 finishes in the past five races, finishing 12th in the mostrecent at Richmond International Raceway. He drives the No.33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet.

Twice a Sprint Cup winner, Bowyer has gone 72 races —exactly two seasons — since his Richmond victory on May 3,2008.

“Not winning ... you never get over it,” he said. “We areracers and grew up racing and winning races. I hate losing. Ithas been a long time since we won a Cup race, and we’re longoverdue. I feel like it’s our turn, and we need to get it done.”

Bowyer’s two victories occurred at Richmond and NewHampshire.

“I think the RCR short-track program has always been good,” he said. “This track (Rich-mond), I don’t know why, it just kind of fell into my driving style. I love this place. Youhave got to get up on the wheel and make it happen at a track like this.

“I think this is a perfect size race track. It’s just fast enough that you get that sensation ofspeed that we all like, and it’s just short enough that we can beat and bang on each other, and root and gouge for a win. That’s what puts on a good show at tracks like Richmond.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please say something about migraine headaches. I think that’s what Ihave. They come on fast, and the pain feels like something is pulsating in my head. I throw up withevery headache. Bright lights make things worse. Does all this sound like a migraine to you?Someone told me there’s always a warning before a migraine starts. I have no warning. I’ve usedTylenol, but it doesn’t do much for me. What is the treatment? Can they be prevented? — L.G.

ANSWER: Your headaches have many of the characteristics of a migraine headache. Thewarning mentioned to you is an aura. The aura usually precedes a migraine. It can be flashing

zigzag lines, peculiar sensations — often in the hands — trouble finding the right words to speak orweakness of a group of muscles. Only 20 percent of migraine patients have an aura, so it’s not anindispensable migraine sign.

Nausea and vomiting are common migraine symptoms. Seventy percent of migraine patientshave a one-sided headache that they describe as throbbing or a dull ache. It lasts from four hours tothree days. People with migraines are very sensitive to light and sound, so they seek a dark, quietroom to lie down.

Stress, overexertion, sleep deprivation and hunger can provoke a migraine. Some foods anddrinks can do the same. Alcohol (especially red wine); caffeine; pickles; bananas; yogurt; avocados;aged cheeses; pickled or marinated chicken, beef or fish; salami; pastrami; bacon; pepperoni; hotdogs; and the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate are on the list of possible migraine inducers.

Medicines for treating a migraine abound. Tylenol, aspirin and drugs like ibuprofen take care ofmild migraines. For more severe ones, triptans are the standard treatment. They include Imitrex,Axert, Frova, Zomig, Amerge and Maxalt. An older medicine, ergotamine, still has a place in treat-ment

For migraine prevention, propranolol, verapamil and amitriptyline are prescribed if the head-aches occur often and disrupt life.

The headache booklet discusses the causes and treatment of the more common kinds of head-aches. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Q: I am thrilled that so many of my favorite

shows from the 1970s and ’80s are beginning

to show up on DVD. Can you tell me when

“Falcon Crest” will be out on DVD. I can’t wait!

— Janet U. in Florida

A: Wait no longer. “Falcon Crest: Season 1”is now out on DVD, and can be foundwherever DVDs are sold and rented. I alsocan’t wait to re-live those Tuscany Valleymemories, with Angela’s scheming, Lance’slady-killing and Maggie’s voice of reason. Itis especially fun to see Susan Sullivan’sportrayal of Maggie back then comparedwith her hilarious Martha Rodgers (Castle’smom) on “Castle.”

A: Helen Wagner,91, who passedaway May 1, was asoap opera icon. She even held theGuinness worldrecord for playingthe samecharacter on TV forthe longest periodof time. I spoke withlongtime friendand cast mateEileen Fulton (whohas played Lisasince 1960) aboutHelen’s passing, and she told meshe felt a little shell-shocked. “My oneregret is that shedidn’t hang on alittle longer to wrapthe show up (whichends its run inSeptember). That’sthe thing thatkeeps haunting

me. She spoke the first words on the show; weall were hoping she’d have the last words too.”

For many people, seniors included, weight controlis a very important health issue. For most, this meanskeeping weight down and not gaining excesspounds. But there’s a certain senior group that has ahard time keeping weight on. They eat a few bitesand they’re full. Or maybe they eat the wrong foodsand then have no energy. Or they have little appetite.

For those who have trouble gaining or keepingon weight, there are two keys to adding pounds.

• Eat calorie- and nutrient-dense foods. These arefoods that have more calories and nutrition per bite.Think of it this way: Which has the most caloriesand nutritional value, a cup of shredded lettuce or acup of sliced bananas? The lettuce is mostly water. The banana has more calories and nutrients. Nowcompare a cup of cucumbers to a cup of raisins.Again, the cucumbers are mostly water, while theraisins have more of what the body needs. Also, if

you fill up on a soft drink, you can take in hundredsof calories, but there’s no nutritional value.

Other calorie-dense foods that will give morenutrition per bite include peanut or almond butter, beans and rice together and fruit.

• Exercise. Muscles weigh more than fat, andbuilding muscle requires exercise. That doesn’tnecessarily mean signing up for a gymmembership. Gaining muscle (healthy weight) can

Gaining Weight

sometimes be as easy as daily walking and usingsmall hand weights or resistance bands. Exercisealso raises the metabolism, which can increase yourappetite so you’ll want to eat a little more.

If your weight is low, ask your doctor if youshould talk to a nutritionist to work out a calorie-and nutrient-dense diet that will help you gain afew pounds, but in a healthy way.

When your kids start cleaning out theirclassroom desks and bins as the school yeardraws to a close, ensure that their originalart and creative keepsakes arrive home ingood condition with a nifty waterproofcarryall made from two plastic soda bottlesand cording. Your young kids can make itat home and carry it to school over theirshoulders along with their regularbackpacks. The good news for any doting

parents is that theirspecial papers andmasterpieces won’t getstuck in backpackzippers or get crumpledin side pockets whencarefully tucked into thissee-through torpedo-shaped cylinder.

Here’s how:Wash and remove the

labels from two 2-literplastic soda bottles.Leave lids screwed on at

both ends. Cut off the base of each bottle withscissors. Trim any rough edges. On one bottle, makea 2-inch slit at the cut end, perpendicular to thebottom edge. Ease the open end of the bottle withthe slit into the open end of the other bottle so thatthe two bottles fit snugly together to form atorpedolike container for rolled-up artwork.

Keep lids screwed on permanently atopposite ends. Tie a colorful shoelace orcording around the neck of the one bottle, then tie the opposite end around the neckof the other bottle to make a strap. Sling overyour child’s shoulder and adjust to fitcomfortably. Decorate the carryall withstickers, if you wish. To use, separate the twobottles, loosely roll up drawings, set insideand put bottle back together again.

Extra idea: Empty gift-wrap, paper-towelor mailing tubes are also good totes forrolled-up art. Use them for sending art tograndparents, or label each tube with yourchild’s name, year and grade for art youstore.
