Take a Volunteer VacationWith budget cutbacks across every segment of society, more
and more public programs will be depending on volunteers tokeep projects going. If sitting beachside or sleeping in a ham-mock isn’t for you, consider taking a volunteer vacation this sum-mer.
On a volunteer vacation, you won’t be paid for your work. Infact, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation to the siteand may pay for your food and lodging while there. Lodging canvary from a sleeping bag on the ground to a shelter or a motel, and you might be cooking your own food, depending on the pro-gram. Still, a volunteer vacation can be a way to help others, andsome of your expenses might be tax deductible.
Charity Guide [www.charityguide.org] has an extensive sec-tion on volunteer vacations. You can volunteer at a camp for chil-dren with special needs, conduct environmental research, trackwhales during migration, help to rehab rescued animals at wild-life sanctuaries, act as photojournalist in any number of worthycauses or help preserve historic trains and railroads, among doz-ens of choices.
The American Hiking Soci-ety [www.americanhiking.org]concentrates on building andmaintaining trails across thecountry. Put together a crew andsign up for a week-long project.
Wilderness Volunteers[www.wildernessvolunteers.org]is a nonprofit that promotesvolunteer service in wild landsand public parks. Read the in-formation carefully to gaugeyour fitness level before sign-ing up.
By working with Habitat forHumanity [www.habitat.org]you could have the opportunityto help build a home for a localfamily.
Check Volunteer Match[www.volunteermatch.org] forthe most up-to-the-minute vol-unteer needs. This is the site to
check if you have time off and want to volunteer locally for aday or a week, but can’t afford to go away.
Do your research before you pick a program. Many projectsare ongoing, and you might not see a lot of progress during thetime you’re there — you’ll be picking up where a previous groupof volunteers left off.
You don’t necessarily need to travel overseas to find workthat needs to be done. There’s plenty of need right here. Youmight even find work to be done in your own town or state, andnot have the expense of leaving home.

• It was Ludwig Wilhelm Erhard, chancellor ofWest Germany in the 1960s, who made thefollowing sage observation: “A compromise is theart of dividing a cake in such a way that everyonebelieves he has the biggest piece.”
• You think you’re a chocolate lover? In Spain inthe 16th century, people loved chocolate somuch that it was not uncommon for royal familiesto give cocoa as part of their daughters’ dowry.
• If you’ve ever lived with another person, whether a sibling, a spouse or a roommate, it’salmost certain that no matter how good therelationship, there was friction over sharing thebathroom. A few years ago those who study suchthings decided to conduct a survey to determinewhat the most annoying bathroom-related habitsare. The results: The habit that annoys peoplemore than any other is failing to replace the rollof toilet paper when it runs out. Leaving blobs oftoothpaste in the sink was a close second.

“W.C. Handy: The Life and Times ofthe Man Who Made the Blues”
by David Robertson(Knopf, $26.95)
Reviewed by Larry Cox
W.C. Handy might not have been the fatherof the blues, but a new book suggests that atthe very least he was the father of thecommercialization of the blues.
William Christopher Handy was born in 1873in Florence, Ala., the son of a preacher. Hestudied at Teachers Agricultural andMechanical College in Huntsville and thenjoined a minstrel show as a cornet player. Aftertouring for several years, he formed his ownband in Memphis in 1903.
While waiting at a train station late one nightin Mississippi, he heard something thatchanged his life. A black musician sat nearHandy, and as he played his guitar, he presseda knife on the strings. The sound wasunforgettable, and it was one of Handy’s firstencounters with the blues. The experience waselectrifying and impacted everything in his lifethat followed.
Robertson’s highly readable account ofHandy’s life is must reading for those interestedin the history of American music. In addition tohis successful musical catalog, in 1914 Handycomposed the most celebrated blues songever written: “St. Louis Blues.” Recalling a visitto St. Louis years before, Handy incorporatedthe memory of a drunken woman stumblingdown a street near the riverfront. As she passedhim, she muttered, “My man’s got a heart likea rock cast in the sea.” It became a fragment
of one of the mostimportant lyrics everwritten.
This book weaves arich tapestry of theworlds that Handyinhabited during his life.As Robertson points out,his life story is in manyways the story of thebirth of our country’sindigenous culture, andthat is why — more thana half century after hisdeath — he is importantand his contributionsindelible.

With a new team and a new outlook thisseason, Kasey Kahne is off to a great startwith the newly combined Richard PettyMotorsports.
Kahne Starts Strong for Petty, DodgeAnd after the first seven races of the Sprint Cup season, Kahne raced back
into the top-12 standings (10th after Texas) and after a good showing in Atlanta.“We had a good race. We got behind on that one deal early in the race there on
pit road, and it took us a long time to get our lap back,” Kahne said. “We actuallyran second to Kurt (Busch) one lap down for over 100 laps in the race. Wefinally got it (lap) back and ended up with seventh, which I think was prettygood. I think that we were more of a fourth- or fifth-place car on a long run andprobably seventh early in the run. It worked out good for us. I’m real happy withwhere our points are right now.”
Kahne says he’s benefited from Petty’s work ethic already this season.“He’s just a cool guy that’s done a ton in this sport. He’s a good guy to have on
your side. From my side — and I think everybody that sees him at the shopwalking around — he’s an icon. Now that he hangs out there and is part of ourteams, it’s exciting and fun. It gives everybody a good attitude.”
Kahne’s landed in the top five once, top 12 twice and has averaged about a14.6 finish. Kyle Busch and Kahne have become Dodge’s top cars at this pointin the season. All of the manufacturer’s cars are running with the long-awaitedR6 engine.
“I think that the biggest thing is that it shows the Dodge teams that, hey, thesecars can go fast. I think Kurt (Busch) is showing that. ... I feel like the Dodgesdid a real good job of making gains. We have a ways to go, but we definitely dida good job up to this point.”
With Phoenix ahead — a track Kahne has not run well at with only one top-five finish and three top-10s in nine races — the driver says the good weatherwill add to great conditions for a good race.

“To me, it’s a neat place to go (race). We haven’trun that well there,” he said. “We’ve kind of beenup-and-down there it seems like. ... Early on (inmy career) I did (in 2004). Since then, I haven’t,and I need to step it up there and figure out how togo fast there.”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: In 2004, I had a scope putdown my throat and into my stomach. The doctorsaid I had a hiatal hernia and signs of acid reflux. He put me on Prilosec. It stops my heartburn verywell. I have been on it ever since. If I miss two doses, the heartburn returns. Is it safe to take this medicinefor long periods of time? — L.K.
ANSWER: Prilosec (omeprazole), Aciphex,Protonix, Nexium and Prevacid are proton-pumpinhibitors, the strongest medicines for decreasing
No Cure for Heartburn,
but Medicines Can Help
s t o m a c hacid production. The manufacturers of thesemedicines suggest a four-to-eight-week course ofmedicine. The medicines don’t cure heartburn. They suppress it as long as a person takes them.So what’s a person to do when heartburn returnsafter a course of therapy? Another kind ofmedicine, like Zantac, can be used. Commonantacids often work. Avoiding foods that stimulateacid production is another way to controlsymptoms.
However, if acid reflux is severe, then the proton-pump medicines are the best. Evidence suggeststhat long-term use might make a person more aptto have a hip fracture. That danger can bepartially offset by taking calcium and vitamin D.Many people remain on these medicines forextended periods. You have to make this decisionfor yourself.
The booklet on hiatal hernia, acid reflux andheartburn focuses primarily on the commonheartburn problem and its treatment. Readers canobtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 501W,Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose acheck or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6Canada with the recipient’s printed name andaddress. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to
know about the side aches I get whenI walk or run. Why do they occur? DoI walk them off or take a break untilthey go away? — E.H.
ANSWER: What you call side aches, others call side stitches. Everyone getsthem. Some feel they are spasms ofthe diaphragm — the large, thinmuscle that serves as a partitionbetween the chest and abdominalcavities and the muscle that is theprincipal breathing muscle. Or theymight be due to too much food orfluid in the digestive tract. Somebelieve a decreased blood flow tothe diaphragm is the cause. In truth,no one knows.
One way to get rid of them is to raiseboth your arms overhead while takinga deep breath. Then lower your armswhile exhaling and simultaneouslycontracting your abdominal muscles.Another favored treatment is to bendthe knee on the side of the pain whilepressing your fingers into the painfularea.
• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have what
doctors call black hairy tongue. Canyou tell me about it? — Anon.
ANSWER: Black hairy tongue, asidefrom its looks, is an innocent conditionthat comes from the elongation oftongue papillae, tiny projections fromthe tongue’s surface. Gently brushing
the tongue three times a day with toothpaste, baking soda or 3 percent hydrogen peroxide canusually get rid of it. If it’s not gone in a month, returnto the dentist or doctor for a follow-up exam.
• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer
individual letters, but he will incorporate them in hiscolumn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newsletters atP.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“JCVD” — I never thought I’d use the words “best,”
“movie” and “Jean-Claude Van Damme” in the samesentence, but here it is: “JCVD” is the best Jean-ClaudeVan Damme movie ever.
Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as ... wait for it ...Jean-Claude Van Damme, a flat-broke, down-and-outex-action star who can’t get any work and is in a heatedlegal battle with his ex-wife over custody of their daugh-ter.
He returns to Brussels to live, and one day while at apost office, a bunch of thugs bust in to rob the place, taking all the patrons (including Jean-Claude VanDamme) hostage. The police show up and somehowget the impression that Jean-Claude Van Damme is theguy holding everyone hostage. This leaves Jean-ClaudeVan Damme in the curious pickle of having to not onlyprotect the hostages from the thugs, but also act as anegotiator for the thugs with the police.
“JCVD” has some great action scenes, which sur-prised me. For an older guy, Jean-Claude Van Dammestill has some good moves. And the ending, which Iwon’t spoil, is an awesome, non-Hollywood resolutionof the story. Check it out.
“Frost/Nixon: The Complete Interviews” — Look-ing to cash in on the DVD release of the feature filmcomes this two-disc collection of the historic 1977 in-terviews between David Frost and Richard Nixon. When they first aired, the interviews captured 45 mil-lion television viewers, who watched as Frost ham-mered away at the former president over details of theWatergate scandal. Granted, this isn’t a DVD for ev-eryone, but for history buffs and political junkies, thisDVD set is gold.
“Barbra Streisand: The Concerts” — Fans of Babswill simply be giddy over this three-disc set. The firstdisc is her sold-out 2006 Ft. Lauderdale concert, in-cluding 10 songs never before seen on DVD; disc twois the 1994 concert in Anaheim, which was her firstshow following a 17-year hiatus; and disc three 3 is“Putting It Together: The Making of the Broadway Al-bum,” which includes as special features performanceclips from her TV specials of the 1960s and ’70s.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two small children, and we recently addeda new member to our family — a Cocker Spaniel puppy. “Missy” is adorable, and my kids absolutely love her; however, she is more than I bargained for. Iam having a very hard time training her and was thinking about going to a dogtrainer who can work on everything from house training to basic commandsand even aggression. I have been hearing about a dog trainer based nearby. How do I know if he’ll be a good trainer for my dog? — Jessica P., via e-mail
DEAR JESSICA: Word-of-mouth recommendations about a dog trainer canbe very telling, and if the person telling you about him thinks he is good andcan help you, there’s a good chance he can.
Of course, there are other questions you should ask directly of the trainerwhen you contact him. Does he belong to a professional organization such asthe Association of Pet Dog Trainers (found at www.apdt.com)? Does he spe-cialize in certain breeds? How much experience does he have training CockerSpaniels? What is the training format — one on one with the trainer, or a groupsetting with pet owners? Can other family members participate in the class? Are there any health restrictions or specific vaccinations required of Missybefore she can join?
Don’t worry about asking too many questions! Good trainers care about yourdog and will do their best to answer them.
Working with a professional trainer will be incredibly beneficial for bothMissy and you. It’s not only Missy who’s learning how to respond to com-mands, you also will learn how to respond to Missy’s behavior, how to stop badhabits and how to continue training her long after the sessions end. That’s right— professional training is not just for your dog, it’s also training for you. That’swhy it’s one of the best investments you can make for both Missy and yourfamily.

You've always wanted a vegetable garden, butyou never had the space for one until you boughtyour first house. After a couple of summers work-ing on the house, you finally found the time to startthat garden. The first year was a bit rough, but nowyou've got it together and your garden is flourish-ing, except for that swarm of slugs that slips in atnight. They've torn into some of your plants, andyou need to put a stop to the madness now.
Getting your slug problem under control will takesome time. You may choose from any number ofmethods. Some gardeners prefer using chemicalslike slug baits. These, however, can be harmful topets and humans and must be used with care. Othergardeners prefer using more natural means.
If you would like to try the natural route first, here are some ideas:
• Ash. Sprinkle ash throughout your garden. Theslugs will not crawl through the material in fear of
it dehydrating them.• Beer or milk. Fill some shallow pans with
beer or milk and insert them around your gar-den an inch or two above the surface. The slugswill be attracted to the liquid, crawl into thecontainers and drown.
• Boards. Lay some boards on the ground inyour garden. The slugs will move under themwhen daylight breaks, and all you'll have to dois pick up the boards and remove the slugs.
• Caffeine. Spray down your plants with a1% caffeine solution. The slugs will be turnedoff by the odor and avoid your plants.
• Coffee grounds. Sprinkle coffee groundsthroughout your garden. The slugs will be turnedoff by the odor and feel of the grounds and avoidcoming into contact with them.
• Copper. Create a copper barrier around yourgarden plants, raised beds and pots. The slugswill receive an electrical charge when cominginto contact with the copper and move away fast.
• Diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle diatomaceousearth throughout your garden. The slugs will notcrawl through the sharp, powdery material infear of getting injured.
• Lava rock. Create barriers of lava rockaround your plants. As with the diatomaceousearth, the slugs will avoid crawling over thesharp rocks in fear of getting injured.
• Seaweed. Place a ring of seaweed aroundyour plants, being careful not to touch the plantstems. Slugs hate salt and will avoid crossingthe seaweed.
These are just some of the methods you cantry to eliminate slugs from your garden. Youcan use almost any substance that will not harmthe plants in your garden but make it difficultfor slugs to enter. Barriers of eggshells and sand, for example, may work just as well as coffeegrounds. However, you will have to reapplythem on a regular basis and after each rain.
To speed up the elimination process, youshould water your garden early in the morning. This will give the soil ample time to dry out

before evening sets in and the slugs come out. Slugsare attracted to moist soil. If the soil in your gar-den is dry, they may not be as apt to enter it andstick around. If, on the other hand, you insist onwatering your garden when the sun goes down, theywill almost certainly flock to your nice, wet gar-den and attack your plants.
None of the methods mentioned are 100% fool-proof. If you really want to eradicate all of the slugsthat enter your garden, you can do so by hand. Justvisit your garden each night and sprinkle salt onthe slugs you spot. The salt will dehydrate them, leading to their death. Many gardeners have expe-rienced much success with this method, some re-porting very few sightings of slugs after a coupleof seasons. Whatever method or combination ofmethods you choose, good luck!
