• It was French author, philosopher and journalistAlbert Camus who made the following sageobservation: “Nobody realizes that some peopleexpend tremendous energy merely to benormal.”

• According to records kept by the Social SecurityAdministration, the name “Barack” was ranked 2,409th in 2008, up more than10,000 spots from 12,535th in 2007.

• Large cities often use high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in order to encouragecarpooling and help reduce traffic congestion. As soon as the lanes appear, however, people start getting creative about ways to get around the restriction.Pregnant women have claimed to be carrying an extra passenger even when allthe other seats are empty, and more than one person has placed a mannequinor inflatable doll in the front seat in an effort to fool authorities. Recently, anundertaker in Los Angeles went to court to appeal a judgment against him, claiming that the body in a coffin in the back should count as a passenger.

• Are you a hypergelast? If you are, it’s nothing to be ashamed of; in fact, it mightmean you’re the life of the party. A hypergelast is someone who laughs a lot.

• Moore’s Law is not good news to thoseof us who might be a bit

technologically challenged; itstates that computer

technology doubles incomplexity every 18 to24 months.

• Those who studysuch things claim that, when it comes to

accidents involvinghousehold appliances,

you’re more likely to beinjured by a washing

machine, but if you are injuredby a clothes dryer, it’s more likelyto be fatal.

Charm BraceletQ: I have a silver bracelet that has four charms on it:

a pack of Chesterfield cigarettes, and the likenesses ofBing Crosby, Perry Como and Arthur Godfrey. What canyou tell me about it? — Dorothy, Prince George, Va.

A: Charm bracelets were especially popular throughoutthe 1940s and ’50s. Charms that are especially desirableinclude ones depicting Disney characters, includingMickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and SnowWhite; entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Mae West andElvis Presley; and other souvenir charms purchased atWorld Fairs and other important events.

A charm of Eisenhower issued during his 1952

campaign recently sold online for $25. I contacted ajewelry expert, Janet Lawwill. According to Janet, yourcharms are unusual and should be worth at least $25each if sterling and in reasonable condition, and less, ofcourse, if they are not. Her contact information iswww.sparklz.com, and [email protected].

• • •Q: I have four Norman Rockwell prints, Freedom

from Fear, Freedom from Want, Freedom to Worshipand Freedom of Speech. I would like to know more aboutthem. — Phyllis, Sun City West, Ariz.

A: Norman Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” were firstpublished as Saturday Evening Post covers fromFebruary 20, 1943 through March 23, 1943, at the heightof World War II. The posters were inspired by an addresstwo years earlier by President Franklin Roosevelt beforea joint session of the U.S. Congress. The posters werelater reprinted. To find out values, I suggest you securea copy of Norman Rockwell Identification and ValueGuide to Magazines, Posters, Calendars and Books byDenis Jackson. • To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We recently adopteda 6-month-old kitten from the local shelter.“Buster” behaves very well around the kids andme, and he’s playful and loves climbing into mylap. But when company comes over, he runs andhides. Is this normal? — Sarah G., via e-mail

DEAR SARAH: This is very common behav-ior from cats, particularly those that have recentlyexperienced a stressful situation such as being

placed in a shelter. But even cats that haven’t beenexposed to a lot of stress can do this when unfa-miliar people visit.

Buster appears to have adapted well to his newhome and is comfortable with you and the chil-dren, which is great. He’s happy and healthy. Butit may take him longer to adjust to strange newpeople in the house.

During the holiday season, make things easierfor Buster by placing his food and water, his litter

box and his favorite toys and blanket away fromheavily trafficked areas of the house. A quiet roomthat he can access easily is ideal. If you want tointroduce him to friends, go and pick him up andcradle him in your arms so that he feels safe, andbring him to your friends so they can pet himbriefly and say hello. Then, let him go. He willprobably run away again, which is fine.

Unless Buster is acting very strangely — hiss-ing at familiar people, hiding for hours or not eat-ing — I would not worry too much about his be-havior. He may never be friendly to everyone whowalks in the door, but over time he may adjustmore quickly to new faces and unfamiliar scentsand make an appearance.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 42 and havean anemia. My doctor thinks it results frommy menstrual bleeding, which is quite heavy.I have been taking iron pills, but I am stillanemic. The doctor says I should have myfibroids removed, and that will stop theexcessive bleeding. I have no othersymptoms — no pain. Will you explain whatfibroids are? They aren’t cancer, are they?— E.B.

Fibroids Can Cause

Anemia in Women

ANSWER: Fibroids arenot cancer. They’regrowths of the uterinemuscle. The uterus ismostly muscle, with aninner lining designed tonourish a fertilized egg.

Quite often, fibroids don’tcause any problems. Large ones can leadto heavy menstrual bleeding, which, in turn, gives rise to an anemia. They also can putpressure on the adjacent urinary bladderand bring on the need to urinate frequently.Sometimes they produce pelvic discomfort, and they might be involved with infertility.

About two-thirds of women in their 40shave one or more fibroids. What causesthem is still a matter of speculation. Femalehormones make them grow. That’s whymenopause, with its drop in hormoneproduction, usually shrinks fibroids. They alsorun in families, so there is a gene influence.

The best treatment for fibroids depends ontheir location in the uterus and their size.

Sometimes removalis achieved withi n s t r u m e n t sintroduced into theuterus through thevagina — no skinincision. Recoveryfrom this procedureis fast.L a p a r o s c o p i csurgery — surgerydone with a scopeand instrumentsinserted throughsmall incisions — isanother techniquethat permits quickrecuperation. Attimes, the entireuterus has to beremoved.

A newer and

popular treatment is uterine arteryembolization. Here a slender, pliable tube isthreaded from a surface artery to the arterythat supplies the fibroid with blood. Whenthe tube arrives at that artery, the doctorreleases tiny pellets that promote theformation of a clot (embolus). Withoutnourishment, the fibroid shrinks and iseventually shed.

The booklet on fibroids gives greaterdetails on this common condition. Readerscan obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue— No. 1106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. • • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor told me

that I have costochondritis. I have had it forfive days, and my chest is sore to the touch. It makes me short of breath. I am onibuprofen, but it doesn’t seem to help. Isthere anything else I can take? — D.H.

ANSWER: The “costo” of costochondritis is“ribs”; the “chondr,” is “cartilage”; the “itis,”inflammation. It’s an inflammation of thecartilage attaching ribs to the breastbone.

Costochronditis is especially painful whentaking in a breath or when twisting the chest. No one is sure what the cause is.

Your medicine and similar ones are thestandard treatment for this condition. Heat,in the form of warm compresses or heatingpads, eases the pain. Some find that coldworks better. If the pain persists, the doctorcan inject the area with cortisone. Thatusually brings quick relief.

Most are well in weeks to months.• • •

• Go Green Tip: Even I am guilty of lovingthe big box stores, but for a nice giftalternative, check out your local farmers’market. Stalls are popping up with locallymade treasures and handcrafts. Avoid thelong lines and pick up something specialwhile supporting your local craftspeople.

• Keep those special chains andnecklaces untangled. Slip them througha drinking straw and then fasten the clasp. The chain will stay straight, and you canstore many together this way.

• “Have you forgotten what you gaveyour friends or relatives on birthdays/Christmas/holidays? Simply use yourcalendar on the appropriate day, makinga note of what and to whom you gave a

gift. Where Easter/Christmas has a longlist, there is usually space at the top orbottom of the page of the month.” —P.B. in British Colombia, Canada

• M.S. in Missouri writes: “If you are shorta serving tray, use a large enough pieceof cardboard and wrap it up inaluminum foil. You also can use holidayboxes lined with a coordinating-color teatowel to serve breads.”

• If you have an indentation in yourcarpet from furniture legs, try placing anice cube in the indentation and letting itmelt. Moisture is slowly introduced intothe fibers as the ice cube melts, and thiscan sometimes plump them up!

• Use a damp paper towel to rub the silkfrom ears of corn after removing thehusks.
