• It was 18th-century French author and philosopher François-MarieArouet, better known as Voltaire, who made the following sageobservation: “It is forbidden to kill; therefore, all murderers are punishedunless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.”

• It took between 75,000 and 80,000 workers to build the PanamaCanal, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across the Isthmus ofPanama.

• Pop star Prince may be best known for his hit “1999.” After playingthe song at a New Year’s Eve party in 1999, he vowed he would neverperform it again. Seven years later, however, unable to escape itsperennial popularity, he started including the song in his performancesonce again.

• Pope Benedict IX held the office three different times.

• When the Barbie doll was first introduced in 1959, it was described inThe New York Times as a “crushing bomb.” So much for early reviews.Since then, more than a billion Barbies have been sold in more than150 countries. Mattel, the doll’s maker, claims that three Barbies aresold every second.

• It was Britain’s Prince Albert who originated the boutonniere. It seemsthat while they were courting, Queen Victoria offered a small bouquetof flowers to her future husband. Prince Albert used his pocketknife tocut a hole in the lapel of his jacket and put the stems of the bouquetthrough it.

• A form of air conditioning existed as far back as ancient Rome.Wealthy citizens had piping installed in the walls of their homes throughwhich water from an aqueduct would circulate, cooling the interior.

it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.” — Bob Hope

• Keep a plastic garbage bag in your glovebox or somewhere in your car. You can pokearm and neck holes for a rain poncho, covera stuck or broken window to keep rain out oruse it to corral all your things if you ever getinto an accident and need to have your cartowed.

• Have a squeaky floorboard? Try sweepingsome talc or baby powder into the spacebetween the boards. It can serve as alubricant, and oftentimes will quiet the squeak.

It’s only for when I take mychildren to visit a friend and need to havesome adult time. The kids look forward to beingable to play with the toy, and it doesn’t getold because they see it only occasionally.” —C.L. in Arizona

Season two could be a breakout year for JoeyLogano, who won’t turn 20 until May. The 2009Raybestos Rookie of the Year has finished fifthand sixth in the past two races.

Don’t look now, but Logano, a Middletown,Conn., native, iseighth in the Sprint

Cup point standings, ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing team-mates Kyle Busch (12th) and Denny Hamlin (22nd).

“I feel more excited to come to the race tracks, is whatit comes down to,” saidLogano. “Last year it was,‘Oh, boy, California, we stunkthere last time.’ I don’t knowif I want to go there. Now, youlook at these places, andyou’re excited to go back tothe track because you thinkyou’re going to have a goodrace car.

“I’m more pumped upabout coming to the racetrack. I think that’s the biggestdeal, me knowing what I

want. It’s the biggest (learning) curve I’ve ever taken.”Logano was still in grade school when Mark Martin

began telling whoever would listen that the kid was goingto be a star. One hears such stories quite often in NASCAR,but most fall short of such heady forecasts. Logano, sofar, has passed every test on his way to the top.

Logano’s one Sprint Cup victory — New HampshireMotor Speedway in June 2009 — was something of ananomaly, greatly aided by a timely rain shower that cutthe race short. He wound up finishing 20th in the pointstandings with the victory, three top-five finishes and seventop 10s.

It’s obvious: Logano is starting to “get it.”“It’s a gradual deal,” he said. “It’s not like a light switch.

I remember last year at this point. Kyle (Busch) and Denny(Hamlin) were telling me something, or Zippy (crew chiefGreg Zipadelli) was telling me something, and I couldn’tmake sense of it in my mind.

As I kept going with time, and kept thinking about whatthey said to me when I was on the race track. I’d think

about it and then, eventually, I made sense of it.”Early results this year have raised the bar on expectations.“I think it’s cool,” said Logano. “I’m excited. Eighth in points ... and last year

I would have been happy with 20th in points at this point in the season.“I wish they’d start the Chase now, but we have a long way to go.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife, 78, has hadheadaches, some memory problems and confusion.A brain scan showed hydrocephalus. We werereferred to a neurosurgeon, and he ordered an

NPH, an UnfamiliarCause of Dementia

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

infusion study. We have waited six weeks for thatappointment. At an earlier appointment, we metsomeone who had had the infusion study and thenhad a shunt placed. He said he got his life back.Someone else told us that 10 percent of peoplediagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease really havenormal pressure hydrocephalus, which is fixable. What is your reaction to this? — J.R.

ANSWER: Dementia is a fog that descends on thebrain, erasing memory and impairing many othermental functions. Alzheimer’s disease is the majorcause of dementia. However, thereare other causes, and one of themis normal pressure hydrocephalus. Ican’t vouch for the statement that10 percent of Alzheimer’s patientshave NPH, but I am sure there area few who do. I don’t want to raisefalse hopes for Alzheimer’s patients.

In NPH, the balance between theproduction and absorption ofcerebrospinal fluid is lost. Thevolume of fluid within the brainincreases and compresses it. Thatleads to the signs and symptoms ofNPH.

The three major indicators of NPHare an abnormal walk, a diminutionof memory and other mentalfunctions (dementia) and anurgency to empty the bladder withfrequent loss of bladder control. TheNPH gait is one where steps aretaken slowly, in short strides and withthe legs wide apart. People look asthough their feet are glued to theground and they have difficultyturning themselves. A persondoesn’t need all three criteria tomerit the diagnosis.

If signs, symptoms and tests, including a brain scan and the

i n f u s i o ntest yourwife isgoing to

have, point to normal pressure hydrocephalus, thendrainage of the excess brain fluid often can restorea person’s life, as the man you met in the doctor’soffice said. A thin, plastic tube (a shunt) drains thefluid to other body sites where it is absorbed.

Alzheimer’s disease is far and away the leadingcause of dementia. The booklet on Alzheimer’sdisease describes it and its treatments in detail. Toorder a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue — No. 903W,Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a checkor money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canadawith the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Pets and AllergiesDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it possible for a

dog to have allergies, like hay fever? My 1-year-old mutt, “Caleb,” is scratching a lot and sneez-ing. — Janine in Madison, Wisc.

DEAR JANINE: Dogs can develop allergiesto different things, just like people can. Dust, pollen and other allergens might set off a sneez-ing or itching reaction in pets. Dogs also canhave negative reactions to food and medicines.

You should note, however, that symptomslike hives, itching, vomiting and so on also canbe indicators of an illness in pets, not allergies.

By Sam Mazzotta

If Caleb ingested a plant that he’s not supposedto, or ate food that’s not safe for dogs (likechocolate or onions), he could exhibit allsorts of strange symptoms.

Another possibility is fleas, which notonly make a pet itch like mad but can causehives, sneezing and allergy-like reactions. As the weather gets warmer, flea infesta-tion — even in dogs that haven’t had itbefore — can become a distinct possibil-ity.

It’s important to take Caleb to the vet-erinarian to rule out any other causes of

his symptoms and to accurately determine whatexactly he is allergic to. It may take more thanone visit to get an exact diagnosis, but be per-sistent in getting to the cause of Caleb’s itchingand sneezing.
