• It was Pulitzer Prize-winning

American author John Steinbeck,

best known for “The Grapes of

Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men,”

who made the following sage

observation: “The writer must

believe that what he is doing is the

most important thing in the world.

And he must hold to this illusion

even when he knows it is not true.”

• If you’re planning a summer trip

to Maine, you won’t want to miss

the stunning tourist attraction to

be found on Peaks Island. There

you’ll find an entire museum

devoted to housing a rather

extensive collection of umbrella

covers.

• In the United States, January is

the least popular month for

weddings.

• If you’ve never heard of the

quagga, don’t blame yourself.

The creature, once found on the

plains of Africa, has been extinct

since 1883. An odd-looking

creature, this subspecies of zebra

was once thought to be half-

zebra, half horse. Though the front

part of its body had the zebra’s

stripes, those stripes faded out

mid-body and the rest of the

equine looked remarkably like a

common horse.

• It’s been claimed that 19th-

century English naturalist Charles

Darwin devoted eight years to

studying the lowly barnacle.

• We all know that the day after

Thanksgiving is commonly known

as Black Friday, thanks to all the

crowds seeking out deals on

Christmas gifts, but have you ever

wondered how it got that name?

It seems that the moniker

originated back in 1965 when the

Philadelphia police department

came up with the name after

having to deal with the traffic jams

and shopping crowds.

Dog Life Vests, Safety BeltsSeveral years ago, a frightening incident inspired automo-

tive safety specialist Christina Selter to found BarkBuckleUP,a program that promotes pet safety.

“We had a near-accident with our dogs in the car. (We were)only traveling about 2 mph from a stop sign, when a car ran ared light and our little Betty fell off the seat. (She) wasn’t hurt, but didn’t want to be on the seat or in the car. Ittook some time to get her confident again.”

Selter, who has an SAE (Society of Automo-tive Engineers) certification, createdBarkBuckleUP to remind owners to restrain theirpets properly in the car, using safety belts spe-cially designed for pets. She travels the U.S.throughout the year, promoting the message andworking with police and fire departments to sup-port the safety program.

BarkBuckleUP also focuses on other safetyissues, and Selter wants pet owners to stay aware.May is National Water Safety Month, and shereminds owners to keep a close eye on their petswhile playing near or in the water.

By Sam Mazzotta

While explaining that most dogs love water, she warns,“Dogs get tired just like us. They need to take breaks.”

Dogs also should wear a pet life vest when on the wa-ter with owners — in a boat or other watercraft, for ex-ample.

To keep dogs healthy, wash them off after they’ve fin-ished their swim. “A few years ago in California at a petevent, there was a huge breakout of hot spots (on dogs)after going into the ocean,” Selter says. “Clean their furthoroughly and their feet. Clean them off every time.”

The BarkBuckleUP website (www.BarkBuckleUP.com)features safety products for pets, including restraints fordogs and for pet carriers, life vests, first-aid kits, and more.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Kasey Kahne isheaded to Hendrick Motorsports, but it’s kindof complicated.

Kahne, 30, has already driven for three teamsin the Sprint Cup Series — without ever mov-ing. He began with Evernham Motorsports, which becameGillett Evernham, which became Rich-ard PettyMotorsports. Allalong, Kahne droveNo. 9, but he startedin a Dodge and thisyear changed to aFord.

Considered oneof the sport’s moretalented drivers, it’sno surprise thatKahne is moving toH e n d r i c kMotorsports oncehis contract at RPMexpires at the end ofthe season, but he’snot moving there di-rectly, or at least, that’s the currentspin.

Next year Kahne will drive for a team not yet announced— Stewart Haas Racing, a Hendrick satellite of sorts, ismost often mentioned — while Mark Martin completeshis contractual commitment at Hendrick. Kahne will notactually join Hendrick proper until 2012. Or so it is cur-rently assumed.

Kahne is willing to wait a year, apparently, in order tojoin the team that produced the top three finishers —Jimmie Johnson, Martin and Jeff Gordon — in last year’sChase.

“To be in the position I’m in now and know where I’mgoing to be in 2012, to have the opportunity with RickHendrick and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, to me,it’s an unbelievable opportunity. I can’t wait to get thatstarted.”

Beyond the announcement of Kahne joining Hendrick

Kasey Kahne to Detour on Way to Hendrick

Kasey Kahne announced that he will headto Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, compli-cating a team roster that includes Jeff Gor-

in 2012, little is known. Martin has declared he isn’t retiring. Tony Stewart has saidhe has made no arrangements to have Kahne join him and Ryan Newman, andother scenarios (JR Motorsports, also Hendrick aligned, moving up from Nation-wide to Cup being one) are similarly denied or, at least, played down. No oneknows whether or not Kahne will take his crew chief, Kenny Francis, along withhim — wherever that is.

Q: I have a question about the stars of the TVseries “JAG.” I know Catherine Bell is in “ArmyWives,” but what about David James Elliott? Wherecan I see him? — Mare, via e-mail

A: David James Elliott, 49, has been keeping verybusy with TV miniseries and movies, his most recentbeing the Hallmark Channel original movie “Dad’sHome.” David stars as a dad who loses his job andhas to stay at home. When the former workaholicis suddenly thrust into the lives of his children, whomhe doesn’t really know at all, it’s just in time to healthe family bonds he has been breaking. SharonCase (“The Young and the Restless”) co-stars. The

movie premieres on Saturday,June 19, just in time forFathers’ Day.

• • •Q: I have always been a big

fan of Emeril Lagasse andalways watched his cookingshow, “Emeril Live.” I read thathe has a new show comingout soon. What is it, andwhere can I watch it? — DorisJ., Atlanta

A: The good-natured chefis back on TV with a newvariety/talk show, “The Emeril

Lagasse Show.” As Emeril himself told me, his goalis to have fun and entertain his fans, as well as hisguests: “We had Sammy Hagar on, which was agreat show. He’s a great musician, but Sammy justdidn’t come to play. He came to not only play asong, but he came to actually play and be a partof the show.” You can catch “The Emeril LagasseShow” on the ION network Sunday nights at 8 p.m.

• • •Q: I was watching a rerun of “The Office,” and I

could swear that the actor who plays the pizzadelivery boy that Michael and Dwight takehostage is Artie from “Glee.”— Genie J., via e-mail

A: You are correct, Genie. I spoke recently withKevin McHale, the talented young actor who playsArtie on the megahit “Glee,” and he told me whata thrill it was to work on that show. “They were

Emeril Lagasse

really, really nice. They’re all geniuses. I remember

the very first take we shot was the first scene that

I’m in with Steve Carell. He starts improvising, and I

had to hide my face behind the pizza boxes, ‘cause

I’m like, ‘This is ridiculous.’ Every time I start frowning

— the same thing on ‘Glee’ — if you see me frown,

it’s because I’m about to laugh.”© 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• “To keep deer from eating plants, slip remnantsof bar soap into pieces of pantyhose and hangon plants. The deer can’t stand the smell.” — M.R.in California

• Here’s a great, decorative way to absorb excessodor in damp spaces (like bathrooms orbasements). Wrap a plastic container with prettyshelf paper and add charcoal briquettes or kittylitter to the box. Place a lid on top with holes pokedin it. It will absorb the moisture. Check it periodicallyand replace the contents.

We can eat beautifully, we can exercise allwe want, but if our body’s chemistry is not work-ing well, then achieving a meaningful weightloss may prove a difficult or frustrating en-deavor.

Nadia, RN and health coach for UnlimitedPotential Center teaches that the body has threesources of energy: Carbohydrates, which arealways burned first, Protein, and Lipids (fats).Once the body has depleted its carbohydratereserves, it will simultaneously draw on its pro-tein and fat reserves for energy. In order to looseweight effectively, your body must work effi-ciently.

“That means staying away from carbohy-drates, fats, and sugars and concentrating on justthe right amount of pure protein and essentialvitamins and minerals”. The Ideal Protein dietpushes your body into ketosis, a fat burning stageuntil you reach 90% of your desired weight loss.Once there, you learn how to reintroduce these

Q: I have a Donald Duck coloring book with boxed watercolors and crayons thatoriginally belonged to my dad. It was never used. It was manufactured by Whitmanin 1937. I almost put it out in a garage sale, but thought I would get your opinionfirst. My husband thinks it might be worth as much as $50. — Susan, CovingtonCounty, Miss.

A: I found your coloring book and accessories in the Official Price Guide to DisneyCollectibles by Ted Hake (House of Collectibles, $29.95). Hake, who buys and sellsmemorabilia through his auction house, believes the 96-page coloring book and cray-ons, watercolors, water dish in the original box and in mint condition is worth about$1,250. You can contact Hake c/o Hake’s Americana, 1966 Greenspring Drive, Suite400, Timonium, MD 21093; www.hakes.com; and 866- 404-9800.

Anytime somebody talks about having a “strategy”to get out of debt, it pays to be leery. There are scamsgalore, including those that promise (for a fee) to takeyour payments and make arrangements with lendersto accept a smaller amount each month. (Unless yousend the check yourself, you really don’t know whereit’s going.)

However, there’s a new book out that talks aboutstrategy, and it’s one you can trust: “Debt-Free For-ever (Take Control of Your Money and Your Life)”by Gail Vaz-Oxlade (Collins, $14.95).

There’s a lot of no-nonsense tough love in Vaz-Oxlade’s plans, and there should be if a strategy toreduce debt is going to succeed. After all, the averageconsumer has $16,000 in credit-card debt. But underthe humor (yes, there’s that, too) is a sound plan. Shetells you upfront that it’s going to be hard work, rightin the first line of Chapter One, then moves quicklyinto the all-important first step: Find out where yourmoney’s going (spreadsheets are provided in thebook).

Step two, facing your debt, is where Vaz-Oxladetakes things beyond the typical “get out of debt” book. Not only are debts written down and categorized, they’re critiqued and analyzed for what they reallycost.

There is plenty of hands-on help. Focus on long-term goals. Decide what you really want, because withdebt control, it matters. Write down your core values, prioritize and set a goal. Find friends who are com-patible with that goal (spending less to have fun).Swap bad habits for good ones.

“Debt-Free Forever” explains how to get a handleon disappearing money (what happens when thepocket monster eats all the change when you break a$20), 401(k) plans, insurance, credit cards and more. There are worksheets, guidelines, instructions on howto make a budget — everything you need to becomedebt free, except for a pencil, piece of paper and acalculator.

Vaz-Oxlade has a television show called “Til DebtDo Us Part” (about couples in debt) on CNBC andhas written 11 books on finances. As she says on herblog: “Money is only a tool. You can use it to youradvantage or you can misuse it to your detriment. Youdecide.”

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader ques-tions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write tohim in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].
