  • St. Therese Chinese Catholic School starting a new school year on Monday, August 24, 2020.

We are so excited to welcome all of our students back for the 20-21 school year. Whether thestudent is an in-person or remote learner, St. Therese School is committed to continuing ourrigorous award winning curriculum. Our teachers and staff members are busy getting ourcampuses ready to safely welcome back our students. In-person learning (5 days per week) starts on Monday, August 24. Our classrooms have beenreconfigured to ensure students are safely socially distanced throughout the school day. Ourschool is cleaned and disinfected throughout the day as well as other health safety practices perCDC recom-mendations and other health authorities. Students enter and leave school byhomeroom or cohort group using a staggered schedule. Doing so reduces the chances andlimits the time students would be physically near other stu-dents or staff who are not part of theirhomeroom or cohort group. Students remain in their homerooms to reduce the number ofpeople who are physical-ly near students throughout the day. For example, teachers who are nothomeroom teachers will teach students in their homeroom/cohort. These and other proceduresprotect students and staff by minimizing any potential health risks. Remote learning starts on Tuesday, September 8 and is led by our St. Therese teachers andfollows our curriculum. K-8 students enrolled in our remote learning option have a wealth ofeducational resources, including a school-issued electronic device. Students are provided withrecorded lessons and educational materials that follow our rigorous award winning curricu-lum.These resources can be quite valuable because students can replay recorded lessons to catchthings they might have missed earlier. Students also interact with teachers, staff, and otherstudents in a live format so stu-dent’s individual needs can be better met. Our remote learningoption pro-vides great opportunities for students to learn and is an excellent choice for many families. St. Therese Chinese Catholic School is still registering students in all grades for the 20-21school year. We are offering five days of in-person learning or remote learning. Thanks to all who have donated towards our “Carry on the Mission Appeal.” Your gener-osity is making a double-impact for our community. We have three more weeks to fully benefit from the $50,000.00 matching grant challenge. Please help us to reach our goal.

    Mission and Prayer

This weekend our community celebrates the feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus at St. Therese Church. St. Therese’s official feast day is on Oct. 1st and she is the Patroness of the Missions, not because of her vast mis-sionary activities, but rather through her prayers and support for missionaries and her tireless love for saving souls for Jesus. Obviously St. Therese has a lot to teach us about MISSION and PRAYER. First of all, we all can be missionaries and we don’t have to venture into foreign lands to do so and we can spread God’s love and build up God’s Kingdom in the ways how we do “small things” with “great love” in our everyday lives. St. Therese’s “little ways” can help us to cultivate a spirituality of mission and compassion for all. Jesus came and preached about the Kingdom of God and sends his disciples out to teach and baptize: “The kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel;" "Go therefore and make disciples of all the na-tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” St. Therese responded to Je-sus’ call with extraordinary zeal and love. Through her, many came to believe in Jesus and many others are continuously being assisted by her examples and intercessions. Secondly St. Therese teaches us that prayer is a powerful weapon for missionary work. Through prayer we connect ourselves with God and assist others to be closer to God and to bear good fruits with their works and lives. Do you pray every day? The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. St. Therese shows us the importance of prayer. So let’s make prayer part of our daily habit and take at least a few minutes of our day to consciously talk to our God. In prayer, we receive God’s grace to live out our calls and we learn how to love and be loved.

  • Speaking of mission and prayer, I would like to share a powerful experience I had with the Missionaries of Charity this past Monday. Four Sisters came to our parish and, two by two, they went around Chinatown, spreading the Good News by praying the Rosary and greeting people on their way. I joined two of them and walked around for about one hour and along the way we had good conversations with people and prayed the rosary while we weren’t conversing with others. Then we ended with one hour of adoration of the Blessed Sac-rament in Church. The Sisters plan to do this every Monday and they want to pray in your homes if you invite them by calling our parish offices; they also want to invite you to join the Holy Hour on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm in St. Therese Church. What a powerful example of mission and prayer ! Peace Fr. Francis

    BEARING FRUIT By Sister Caritas

As we watch the present news each day, we see more destruction. Forests are burning in the west. People have lost their homes and towns have been destroyed. The virus has affected so many jobs and businesses. All peo-ples’ plans and dreams are being damaged. Much of these events are beyond our individual control. Yet re-sponsibility can be laid at the feet of individuals and groups for inactivity or lack of preparation. Our readings today present us with the images of landowner and vineyards. Jesus tells a story of a vineyard owner who rents his property and wants the fruits of the produce grown on his land by others. When he sends out his servants to gather his products, the workers kill the servants and thus he gets no produce from his vine-yard. He sends more servants, more in number, to gather his produce and the same thing happens. They kill all the servants. He decides to send his loved son and they throw him out and kill him also so they can own the land. “What will the master do to these evil servants?” Those listening say the owner will kill them and rent his property to others. Ending the parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of God will be taken from the Chief Priests and Scribes and given to others. They were hearing the parable. The call to being of the king-dom of God is to bear fruit. God is patient and merciful. He gives us opportunities over and over to bear fruit. We are called to be holy, like Jesus, like St. Therese. We are to be filled with the grace of love and kindness. We are to care for others and follow the word of God. Being filled with grace and bearing fruit begins at Baptism. We always have the opportunity to grow in holiness and grace each day. When each of us is finally called to the kingdom of God, in the kingdom of heaven, will we be ready?

ROBERTA’S FAITH TESTIMONY, PART TWO At the nursing home, I share a small room with a 77-year-old woman who loudly and continuously screams “Help!!!” day and night and curses. Almost every day, she screams in her sleep too! Her screams are a piercing kind of scream and I constantly need to cover my ears. One very early morning at 2 am, she woke up and start-ed screaming again, disturbing me and the patients living in nearby rooms. I told her to press the nurse call button if she needs help (we don’t call for help here by screaming). She immediately fired back at me with an angry “Shut up!!!” In an instant, I lost my temper and yelled back at her. Of course, she fired back with more furious words. Caught by how suddenly I had lost control of my own temper and patience, I immediately end-ed the argument and prayed the rosary, asking for God and Mary’s help to help me be more patient, kind, and loving. I wouldn’t be able to bring God’s love to her if I was upset at her and she wouldn’t be able to see Jesus through me if I was not holy and if I did not die unto myself. Even though I prayed for my roommate every day, I knew God wanted me to be more merciful and charitable towards her. I resolved not to lose my temper anymore with my roommate, but I needed to put something in place so that I WON’T lose my temper again. I asked myself, “What should I do next time she starts screaming again INSTEAD OF losing my temper?” I de-cided to press MY nurse call button so that a nurse can come and solve my roommate’s issues and help her stop screaming. This method has been working beautifully and I have been able to maintain a peaceful disposi-tion even when my roommate is screaming.

  • Many sins can be overcome and kept from repeating itself if we plan in advance what to do instead of sinning when we face the same temptation in the future. This way, we will not be caught by surprise, we will have seen it coming, and will be better prepared for it. This method even works to help us avoid the near occasions of sin. For great creative ideas, we can ask God, “God, what do you want me to do? What is the most holy and loving thing to do?” It‘s helpful to regularly remind ourselves of The Ten Commandments, the 7 deadly sins (lust, greed, gluttony, envy, anger, pride, sloth), and the 7 lively virtues (chastity, generosity, moderation, kindness, patience, humility, diligence). There is no temptation we will ever face that humanity hasn’t already faced, because there is no originality in the devil. Satan merely repeats the same tactics to tempt people to sin. The strategies that Satan used on Adam and Eve to tempt them to sin are the same strategies he uses on us to-day. But God is capable of helping us overcome and resist every temptation and sin, especially when we pray the “Our Father.” Also, I have noticed that whenever I am playing an audio version of the rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy or the Mass on YouTube, especially if it contains Gregorian chant music, my roommate calms down and stops screaming. Fellow parishioner Janice recently gave me some fantastic advice. She told me that when people are focused on something else, they focus less on themselves and the pain they’re experiencing. So giving my roommate some activities to do, like adult coloring, might be helpful to her. The Lord teaches us to forgive as God forgives us each time we come to Him and repent of our sins. God has forgiven me countless times! So I, too, must forgive my roommate every time she wakes me up with her screaming or when I can’t hold conversations on the phone because I can’t hear the person talking over my roommate’s screams. I have both heart failure and kidney failure (end-stage renal disease) and I receive dialysis treatments on prem-ise for 3 hours at a time, 3 days a week. Dialysis is not a pleasant experience, so I’ve been offering this suffer-ing up for souls in Purgatory, to make reparations for my sins and the sins of others, for the conversion of all souls, and for an end to abortion. While I undergo dialysis, I spend the time praying for the salvation of souls, many world issues, and for everyone I have ever met and will ever meet in the future. Know that you are all in my daily prayers! After all of my prayers have been said, I spend the remaining time in dialysis thinking of all the blessings God has given me and just keep thanking Him. God has been so extremely good to me and I am incredibly blessed! Those 9 hours are God’s special gift to me, because He has allotted that time for me and Him to spend together in conversation without interruption. I thank Him for giving me the opportunity to grow closer to Him. You know, when we fill our life with God, we realize that He alone is sufficient. Though I live in a tiny space without being able to go outside and all of my belongings fit in one cabinet, I still feel like I have way too many things and that God spoils me. The closer I grow towards Jesus, the more I realize how little I truly need and what I do need, God has always and will always provide for me at the perfect time. The real gold in life worth pursuing is not money, earthly pleasures, power, control, expensive foods, vacations, human praise and adoration, fame, Facebook “likes,” Twitter followers, trends, awards, promotions, big houses, nice cars, cool phones, physical beauty, winning, or getting everything we desire. These are all vanities—worthless and meaningless. The real gold is Jesus, knowing Him, having an intimate relationship with Him through pray-er, eternal life in Heaven with God, loving Him with all of our heart, mind, and soul, loving other people as ourselves, obeying God’s commandments, serving Him, the sacraments, the Bible, the Catholic Church, the 7 gifts and the 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit, and doing His will. I am eager to see our parish family again in person and being able to participate in the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Confession, but thank God I can see Fr. Li and some of you through the live-streamed Sunday Masses and the Wednesday rosary sessions. I know that we are always united as the family of God through our Baptism and through our prayers for one another. I pray that we can all receive the sacraments very soon and celebrate Mass together! Until then, let’s keep each other in our prayers! Thank you so much for your prayers for me! I need many prayers! May God bless all of you! Your sister-in-Christ, Roberta
