Faith Sharing Questions Theme of this week’s Gospel: Jesus preached reform. At the sea of Galilee He called Peter, Andrew, James and John to become “fishers of men!” At once they left their fishing nets to follow Him. Jesus taught and performed many miracles! Adults: When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew to Galilee and told the crowds who had followed Him to “repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” Do you think His followers understood what He meant by the “Kingdom of Heaven?” How would you define the “Kingdom of Heaven?” Teens: Jesus began gathering His apostles when He walked by the sea of Galilee. Would you have the courage to leave everything and follow Jesus if He were on earth today? How can you be a follower of Jesus in your daily life? Children: If you could ask Jesus for one miracle, what would it be? Why not ask Him?

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time We are already at the end of January and believe it or not, Lent and Ash Wednesday are fast approaching. Time does indeed fly by. The readings for this Sunday focus on an essential aspect of our faith; its universality. We are not a faith for one nation, one language, one culture. We are a faith for all. I have always liked this aspect of Catholicism. Indeed the word “Catholic” means universal. We belong to all. This is mentioned in the readings today. The people have seen a great light. Jesus calls ordinary people, fishermen, to be fishers of men. A great reminder to all of us that as followers of Jesus Christ we are to participate in this great enterprise. Once again we’re reminded that we are the people of God. Fr. Quill

The Presentation of the Lord, Ordinary Time, Cycle A Whenever a "Feast of the Lord" falls on a Sunday of Ordinary Time, its associated readings and prayers for the Mass replace the regular readings and prayers for that Sunday. The "Presentation of the Lord" is considered such a feast. It is celebrated forty days after Christmas and is considered THE END of the Christmas Season. (Though strictly speaking liturgically, the Christmas Season ends with The Baptism of the Lord, normally the third Sunday after Christmas.)

The Presentation is also known as “Candlemas Day” on which all the candles to be used in the church during the year are blessed. This day was chosen because of the words of the Canticle of Simeon (see below) contained in the Gospel Reading for the day referring to Jesus as “a light for revelation to the gentiles.”

In the past The Presentation was also referred to as “The Purification of the Virgin Mary.”

Gospel Reading (Luke 2:22-40): This Gospel reading is the story of Joseph and Mary bringing the child Jesus to the Temple to "present" him to God, since he is the first-born male. Like the story of Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, this story of the Presentation of Jesus is full of symbolism. Joseph and Mary are presented as pious Jews who are observant of Jewish Law and Traditions. Simeon and Anna (both very old and pious Jews) can be seen as representative figures of the Jewish people throughout all of their tumultuous history who have waited so long for this child. The story is "pregnant" with symbolism and deeper meanings.

It is thought that Saint Luke was a disciple of Saint Paul. Saint Paul became known as “the Apostle to the Gentiles.” In Saint Paul’s writings, there are places where he wrestles with the relationship of Judaism to Christianity and the relationship of Jews to the Church. It is thought that stories such as The Visitation and The Presentation are echoing Saint Paul’s and Saint Luke’s vision of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity... that of respect and veneration in Christians toward Jews and Judaism... and of joy and hopefulness in Jews toward Christians and Christianity. The images painted by Luke with words in these writings are quite beautiful and are often

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Parish Worship continued Anniversary of the Dedication of Our

Church The anniversary of the dedication of our church building is a week from Wednesday. On February 5, 1939 our current church building was dedicated. At that time, it consisted of what is now the central nave, sanctuary and bell tower. The annex extending toward Sleepy Hollow Road was added in the 1960's. The rectory/parish office wing was added in the 1950's. The anniversary of the dedication of a church can be celebrated as a “local solemnity” meaning that in the parish/community for which the church was dedicated, a special Mass can be celebrated, eclipsing even the regular Sunday Liturgy.

Blessing of Throats Next Sunday February 3 is the Feast of Saint Blaise. Next Sunday, after all of the Masses, we will have the Blessing of Throats: “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat, and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

This passage contains the “Gospel Canticle” called the Nunc Dimittis or “Song/Canticle of Simeon” which is part of Compline (Night Prayer) from the Liturgy of the Hours that is prayed at the end of each day. The Nunc Dimittis, the Benedictus (also known as the “Canticle of Zachariah” prayed every morning during Morning Prayer) and the Magnificat (also known as the “Canticle of Mary” prayed every evening during Evening Prayer) together are the three great “Gospel Canticles” of the Church’s Prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. First Reading (Malachi 3:1-4): The name "Malachi" means "my Messenger" and the oracles in this book are dated to the years after the construction of the "Second Temple," built when the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon. Malachi speaks of a coming day when the Lord will "visit" his people for the purpose of purifying them, so that their sacrifices at the Temple may be truly pleasing. This "Day of the Lord" will be so exacting that the prophet asks "But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears?” It would seem that the prophet is trying to "motivate" the people to a more whole-hearted commitment to their religious practices. Second Reading (Hebrews 2:14-18): The Letter to the Hebrews is more like a homily that was meant to encourage a Christian community that was in need of encouragement to remain faithful for the long-haul. The Letter to the Hebrews demonstrates more developed and advanced thinking about Jesus than other writings in the New Testament and so scholars have concluded that it was written relatively late. This passage emphasizes the importance of the humanity of Jesus: "Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested."

Saint of the Week

Saint John Bosco

The future saint, John Bosco, was born on August 16, 1815 in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. His father was a farmhand on the farm of a noble of the region. John’s father died when he was two, leaving his mother, Margherita Occhiena, to raise him and his siblings. Her strong character was an influential force in the future saint’s life. John was 9 years old when he had his first of a series of dreams that he would have. It was the dream of a group of poor boys that were playing and swearing, and a man told him that he would have to win them by love and not by force. At the age of 12 he sought work as a farmhand and ended up at a vineyard. His schooling suffered until a priest, the future Saint Joseph Cafasso, noticed John’s natural talent and encouraged his schooling. In 1835 John Bosco entered the seminary and six years later was ordained. John established an Oratorio to help the poor boys of the city of Turin, Italy in 1847. He began with 36 boys and in 1861 was sheltering 800 boys. Despite the opposition of authorities and people in Turin, as well as some other clergy, John Bosco continued his work with the boys. He also had several attempts on his life. In 1859 he established the Society of St. Francis de Sales (Salesians) to continue his work. He worked with the boys through what is called the Preventive System, which is made up of reason, religion and kindness. He died on January 31, 1888. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1939. As said above, Saint John Bosco had a series of dreams. He had a vision of hell and also a well-known vision in which there are two pillars in the sea. On top of one pillar is a statue of the Virgin Mary and on top of the other is a Host with the motto “Salvation of Believers.” On the sea is a ship that is the Church steered by the Pope. The ship is attacked and the Pope is killed, but another Pope takes the ship through the pillars and the enemy is destroyed. The two pillars are seen as the pillars of the Church.
