http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/090615.cfm Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapo-lis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they pro-claimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. (Mark 7:31-37) The rite of Baptism concludes with the ephphatha, a liturgical replication of Jesus’ miracle of healing the deaf-mute.

The prayer reads: "May Jesus touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father."

Thus, the Sacrament of Baptism proclaims that our ears and mouths are instruments for glorifying God.

We are to keep our ears clean and our mouths pure so that we may filter out what does not testify to the good that Jesus has done for us.

May our ears and our mouths be opened by Christ so that others will say: "He has done all things well."

Becoming Catholic?

Have you thought about becoming a Catholic or have a friend, family member, co-worker, or acquaintance that has expressed an interest in becoming a Catholic?

The RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a program which provides information and instruction to those seeking to learn about the Catholic Church, what it is we believe and why we believe it. Beginning in September, we will begin meeting Monday evenings from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM in the parish center.

Those participating will receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Please contact Deacon Carl by emailing him at [email protected]

We will soon resume publishing the information about the Sunday collections.

The large number of you using electronic transfers is good for us and convenient for you, but it reduces the actual amount in the collection baskets. We will probably print monthly numbers so that you can see the generosity of our parishioners in a way that can more clearly compare with prior years’ collections.

Thank you for your patience and for your generosity.

Mass Intentions for the Week

Evening Bible Study

Scripture plays a central role in our Catholic faith: the entire first half of Mass is the Liturgy of the Word, with a homily applying the weekly scriptures to our lives. Yet, how many of us have actually read and studied the Bible and know what’s in it?

San Francisco Solano’s evening Bible study group will begin its 2015 fall session in September with the Book of Genesis. This will mark the beginning

of a multi-year course: The Bible Plain and Simple. Our mission is to discover the Bible systematically, verse-by-verse, Genesis through Revelation, utilizing a combination of audio taught by renowned literary scholar, Dr. Bill Creasy, and group discussions.

Dr. Creasy has been called “a Catholic Bible teacher extraordinaire” and “the Garrison Keillor of Bible study!” Check him out at logosbiblestudy.com.

Come join us for coffee and desert as we study the Bible.

Classes begin: Monday, September 14 or Thursday, September 17

A new season of Women's Circle of Faith & Friendship begins on Tuesday, September 15. All women (18+) of the parish are invited to explore this program, which has been described as a spa for your soul. Women's Circle is a peer ministry for women of all stages of life, offering an opportunity to nurture our spirituality, deepen our faith, and build community with others.

This season we will be using the book It’s Good to be Queen – becoming as Bold, Generous and wise as the Queen of Sheba, by Liz Curtis Higgs. “When it comes to famous queens in the Bible, we know the good one, Queen Esther, the bad one, Queen Jezebel. Now meet the wise one, the Queen of Sheba. Her quest for wisdom will surprise you, challenge you, inspire you, and change you. This wealthy royal from old will show you how to live boldly, seek after truth, ask the right questions, encourage others, receive graciously, and honor the Lord above all.”

Meetings will be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday mornings (9:15 AM-11:30 AM) and evenings (6 PM-8 PM) from September 15 through December 1.

There is a $20.00 registration fee, which includes the book and other resources. We recommend pre-registering to ensure a book. For information and to pre-register please email Lori LaFavre at [email protected].

Letter from the Deacon

Adult Catholics Growing in Faith

World Meeting of Families Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. This year’s meeting will be held in Philadelphia beginning September 22nd and concluding with a visit by Pope Francis on September 27th.

Held every three years and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the Family, the World Meeting of Families is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The theme of the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society.

Speaking of Love: From Adolescence to Adulthood

Paul Jarzembowski Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth

In our adolescence, as we move from using the word “love” in family settings (“mommy, I love you”) to using it with people beyond our blood relatives in more personal and intimate ways, “love” becomes a pursuit, not a given. We agonize over how much someone “likes” us, and then get tied up in knots over when we should say “I love you” to that special someone. Sometimes these trials and tribulations become all consuming, even unhealthy, especially when the quest to be loved and to find others to love becomes too intense. The roller coaster ride of dates, dances, and doubts are a part of growing up. I remember my own high school years: I would work up even more nerve trying to figure out what to do and what to say on those first, second, and third dates. Moments like these mark the teenage years of many people. We wrestle with the emotional upheaval that goes with this youthful time in our lives. But before dismissing this as teenage fickleness, it should be noted that the tempestuous pursuit of “love” is part of our human DNA given to us by our Creator, so much so that the prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures used this experience to describe the way God pursues us in his divine love for all humanity. The concern, though, is that some never get off the roller coaster ride. As we grow into young adulthood, we are called to define “love” in a more mature way. We incorporate notions of commitment, steadfastness, patience, and compassion into our understanding of this beautiful word. In our Youth and Young Adult ministries, the Church further challenges young men and women to love as Christ loves, with compassion and tenderness, with selfless sacrifice and humility, and in total acceptance of the Father’s will – exemplified by the biblical images noted in Love Is Our Mission, no. 24: the father of the prodigal son (Lk 15:11-32), the shepherd searching for his lost sheep (Lk 15:3-7), the mother who comforts her children (Isa 66:13), the healer of the blind man (Mk 10:46-52), among other beautiful examples. Too often, as teens enter young adulthood, especially among those who are disconnected from the Church and ministries for youth and young adults, these wonderful definitions of “love” are not passed on. One thing that I have done with my ministry with young couples is challenge them to see themselves as the father of the prodigal son or the shep-herd of the lost sheep: Would they lovingly forgive or search out their fiancée or spouse if they drifted, and then welcome them back with compassion and joy? Or, like the healing image of Christ in the New Testament, would they sacrifice their time, even to the point of putting their dreams and lives on hold, to take care of their sick or broken partner? These images can remind us what God means by “love” and how we need a balance of the excitement of affectionate pursuit and the steadiness of stable and selfless commitment to truly understand how to love another as God loves us. When St. Paul spoke of this mature understanding of love, he reflected in a similar way, saying, “When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things.” (1 Cor 13:11). In reading Love Is Our Mission, may we be inspired to pass on the beautiful, biblical imagery of love to our youth and young adults – so that, one day, they too can fully experience loving another as Christ so loved the world.

HAPPY LABOR DAY In this year's Labor Day statement, Archbishop Thomas Wenski, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, focuses on creating sufficient, decent work that honors the dignity of families. Read the Statement here: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-anddignity/ labor-employment/labor-day-statement-2015.cfm

One of the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching is The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers: “The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to de-cent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.”

Here are a few ways that we can do: (1) Educate ourselves about issues that impact workers and working families in our community; (2) Advocate for justice for workers, fair wages, treatment, and respect; (3) Make an impact with our dollars, through support of fair trade products and vendors that treat workers well. Thanks to workers for the good work that you do and to all who work together for the common good!
