To “scrutinize” means to take a long and careful look at the ways we need to be healed and strengthened. In the Scrutinies, the Elect and the Community both acknowledge the power of evil that hinders them from following Christ, and the Elect give public witness to their ongoing conversion. Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it is about an all -loving, merciful God who offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an opportunity to change. It is a continual turning away from the inauthentic self to the authentic self. The First Scrutiny, celebrated on the 3 rd Sunday of Lent, asks us to reflect on the Cycle A Readings and consider the following questions. In what way have you experienced being an outcast? Who have you made an outcast and why? What are the deep thirsts of Our World; Our society; Our Communities? What are my own deep thirsts? These are just a few of the questions the Elect have reflected on when they kneel before the altar today. During the week after the 3 rd Sunday of Lent, the Elect are Presented with the Creed. Creed comes from the first word of the formula in Latin, “credo” meaning, “I Believe”. It is an ancient statement of faith that tells us what the early church believed and what we continue to believe today. During this Rite, the Elect are presented with the essential mysteries of our faith we profess in the Nicene Creed and God is asked to purify the Elect to make them worthy to receive the grace of Baptism. The Creed will be presented on Wednesday, March 18 th , at 6:45 PM in church. The Parish Community is welcome to join us. Let us continue to pray for the Elect and Candidates as they journey towards Full Initiation into our Catholic Church. St. Patrick's Dinner has been cancelled

Third Sunday of Lent March 15, 2020

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Scrutinies

On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent the Church celebrates the “Scrutinies” for the Elect (the unbaptized preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil). To “scrutinize” means to take a long and careful look at the ways we need to be healed and strengthened. Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it is about an all-loving, merciful God who offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an opportunity to change. It is a continual turning away from the inauthentic self to the authentic self. The First Scrutiny, celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of Lent, asks us to reflect on the Cycle A Readings and consider the following questions. In what way have you experienced being an outcast? Who have you made an outcast and why? What are the deep thirsts of Our World; Our society; Our Communities? What are my own deep thirsts? These are just a few of the questions the Elect have reflected on when they kneel before the altar today.

During the week after the 3rd Sunday of Lent, the Elect are Presented with the Creed. Creed comes from the first word of the formula in Latin, “credo” meaning, “I Believe”. Can I offer God more time during Lent? YES! Thank God for His gift of life. Join the 40 Days for Life campaign in supporting the unborn, women and families.

40 Days for Life is an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil (7 am to 7 pm) in front of abortion businesses. This campaign is nationwide, worldwide and has measurable results. Client visits fall substantially when we pray outside Planned Parenthood. You are changing hearts, your presence makes people think about their decisions, your prayers save babies. Please go to 40DaysforLife.com/thousandoaks and sign

up for an hour in front of Planned Parenthood in Thousand Oaks. You won't be alone out there, no contact with clients or PP staff is necessary. Better yet, sign up for an hour a week during Lent. God will notice your commitment. Call or text Leonore 805-527-4444 or email [email protected], or if this is your first campaign. WE WELCOME all peaceful pro-life participants so BRING A FRIEND - it's not just for Catholics!

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING 1 Thessalonians 5:17, St. Paul urges Christians to

“pray without ceasing.” The passage, though short, is a significant message for Christians on the importance of cultivating a relationship with God through prayer.

SAINT JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY March 19

Joseph, someone once joked, was indeed the perfect husband: the only major character in Jesus’ story who never utters a word!

But the Gospel recounts and the liturgy celebrates his silent

witness of faith-filled deeds: “With a husband’s love he

cherished Mary, the Virgin Mother of God; with fatherly care he watched over Jesus” (Preface of Saint Joseph,

Sacramentary). Catholic devotion, therefore, hails him as patron-protector of the universal Church. Some cultures set a festive “Saint Joseph’s Table,” welcoming the poor and strangers to feast with family and friends. Tradition keeps today as the anniversary of his death, which we

presume was peaceful, with Jesus and Mary present. Thus, Catholics invoke Joseph as Patron of a Happy Death. Descended from David’s house, which God finished

“building” through Joseph’s provision of a home for Mary and Jesus, he was, fittingly, a carpenter by trade; thus,

patron of workers.

Spring, nature’s rebirth, begins between his feast and Annunciation (March 25), appropriately, since Joseph’s

silent obedience and Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) usher in humanity’s

spiritual rebirth. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ST. JOSEPH

St. Patrick’s Day March 17th

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family.

DID YOU KNOW?

Be aware of poison dangers in the home More than 90% of all poisonings happen in homes. Parents

should know the top risks for children (especially children who still put things in their mouths!) and work to eradicate them. Lead poisoning is high on the list, especially for older homes

with lead paint or dust. Button batteries are small and shiny and lurk in many toys and electronics that litter our homes.

Swallowing these can be deadly for children. The same is true of household cleaners like laundry or dishwasher detergent

RESPECT LIFE

That the unborn child is alive: How are they dead unless they were first alive? But still in the womb an infant by necessary cruelty is killed when lying twisted at the womb's mouth he prevents birth and is a matricide unless he dies. Therefore there is among the arms of physicians an instrument by which with a rotary movement the genital parts are first opened, then with a cervical instrument the interior members are slaughtered with careful judgment by a blunt barb, so that the whole criminal deed is extracted with a violent delivery. There is also the bronze needle by which the throat - cutting is carried out by a robbery in the dark; this instrument is called and embryo knife from its function of infanticide, as it is deadly for the living infant. Tertullian (c. 160 - 240)

¿Sabia Usted?
