The Pastor’s Page by Fr . Shawn Wil l iam Cutler

[Jesus] stood up to read and was handed the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”

Rolling up the scroll, He handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at Him. He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:16-21).

T his weekend, our parish celebrates the holy sacrament of Confirmation bestowed upon our 30 young men and

women. The Holy Spirit will strengthen and seal their baptismal graces. Confirmation also completes their sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, the Holy Eucharist). In addition, the Holy Spirit gives our confirmandi His seven gifts (wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord). To what purpose do we receive the Holy Spirit’s gifts and graces, however? He shares His very divine life so that we can live out Jesus’ words in the synagogue revealed in St. Luke’s Gospel within our own lives. The mission of Jesus Christ did not end at His Ascension into heaven. It continues through all of us who have the privilege of being His chosen vehicles in the world as His presence among the faithful, the unfaithful, and those in search of answers and truth that can only be found in Christ Himself. For Jesus’ mission to continue, therefore, and for the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit to bear

great fruit in our lives, we must remain connected to Jesus Christ every day, but most especially, every Sunday at Mass when we celebrate His Resurrection. Jesus’ life in the Resurrection gives us life now and in eternity. We live His virtues in our own lives as He is the perfect model and exemplar of who to live for. Jesus sets the bar high, as it were, but thankfully, He gives us all the means to achieve His will for us through the Holy Spirit. Through Him, we connect to Jesus through daily prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments—especially Holy Communion every Sunday—works of charity and sacrifice, and virtuous example in our moral living each day. Confirmation, therefore, is not a graduation from our Catholic faith. It is, in fact, a whole new beginning. May each of our confirmandi live the graces and gifts generously bestowed on them today by God so that they will, indeed, fulfill Jesus’ words He proclaimed in the synagogue so many years ago each day in their own lives: “Today, this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
