Children from across the city, including many Bronx boys and girls, marked the beginning of their Fresh Air summer experiences this past June 30th.

This summer, thousands of children, including many Bronx youngsters, will depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal to visit volunteer host families and enjoy one or two weeks of simple summertime joys such as skipping rocks across a lake, running barefoot through the grass, roasting marshmallows, and making new friends.

The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profi t agency that has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Each summer, close to 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Canada. An additional 3,000 children enjoy adventures at Fund camps in upstate New York, and young people also benefi t from year-round educational initiatives.

As the city waits for the Kingsbridge

Armory to be redeveloped into an ice hockey center, local labor unions are looking to stick the developer in the penalty box.

Developer Kingsbridge National Ice Center (KNIC), led by Kevin Parker, is preparing to turn the

abandoned armory into the nation’s largest ice center, featuring nine skating rinks and a 5,000 seat arena.

But local unions are up in arms, claiming that KNIC and its chosen construction contractor, Gilbane Building Company, have opted not to go with union labor for the project, which has been on hold for some time due to legal squabbles.

Laborers said they are displeased that Gilbane went with non-union workers for a major project at 118 Fulton Street in Manhattan as well as other

jobs around the city, and are concerned about

the same thing happening in the Bronx.Union members rallied outside of the

Kingsbridge Armory on June 29 to demand that construction jobs be given to local union laborers.

“Unionized workers provide more skilled labor due to better training,” said Barrie Smith, business leader for Local 79 and President of 100 Black Construction Workers.

Smith said that 18 worker deaths have occurred at New York City construction sites in the past year, and 17 of those killed were non-union workers.

“Not only is it a skill issue, it’s a safety issue,” said Smith.

The Mayor’s Offi ce of Media and Entertainment (MOME)

will provide a $1 million grant to the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism (J-School) to create new training programs for community and ethnic media outlets.

The grant was announced on June 27 by MOME Commissioner Julie Menin and J-School Dean Sarah Bartlett at a press conference at the Center for Community and Ethnic Media (CCEM), started by CUNY in 2012 to support those news outlets.

The training is intended to help community journalists stay current in the digital age, said Menin, who noted that her mother was an immigrant and relied heavily on community and ethnic newspapers to get information.

“The ethnic media is a lifeline for reporting to these communities,” Menin said.

The J-School is expected to train between 200 and 300 journalists annually with the grant money.

As part of the grant, the J-School’s broadcast facilities will be offi cially renamed the “Made in NY Broadcast Center.”

Funding from MOME will provide CCEM

with the means to create new, affordable courses built upon on the J-School’s current offerings. Course topics are likely to include multimedia reporting, video storytelling, social media and podcasting, said CCEM Co-Director Jehangir Khattak.

Bartlett, who referred to the grant as “a dream come true for us,” said the funds would

provide a needed boost to CCEM operations.“We’ve been like ‘the little engine that

could,’” remarked Bartlett. “We were trying to do it scrappily and with the limited resources that we had, and this will really allow us to expand the range of offerings that we have.”

Voices of New York, a website run by CCEM, highlights the work of ethnic news organizations throughout the city.

“By showcasing the best work being done by these journalists on its website,

The grant is the latest move by the city to increase support of ethnic media outlets.

In January, Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced the creation of an online directory of ethnic and community media that city employees could use for outreach and marketing efforts, and the City Council conducted a hearing to examine if city agencies were suffi ciently using the ethnic press for advertising purposes.

“The diversity and breadth of New York City’s community and ethnic media refl ects the diversity of our city as a whole, and it is crucially important to keep these outlets thriving,” said Menin.

Food Bank For New York City is in a position to know. We serve nearly 1.4 million people – almost one out of every fi ve New Yorkers – through a network of food pantries, soup kitchens and community-based charities. And our October 2013 report, Hunger’s New Normal: Redefi ning Emergency in Post-Recession New York City, which was based on interviews with more than 1,200 people using food pantries and soup kitchens in all fi ve boroughs, found that a whopping two-thirds of families using those resources don’t take advantage of Summer Meals.

The number one reason? They don’t even know about it.

This isn’t just a New York City phenomenon. Earlier this month, the respected Urban Institute think tank reported that while some 22 million school-age children eat free or reduced-price school lunches nationwide, only about 2.6 million of them – just over one in 10 – take part in the federal Summer Food Program. The effects of such summer-long nutrition defi cits can be especially critical for young children, for whom even mild

During 10 months of the year, hundreds of thousands of

New York City kids eat free school breakfasts and lunches. These meals constitute a vital lifeline for families with already-stretched food budgets. So for many such families, the June 28th last day of public school classes may be less about planning summer fun for the kids and more about facing a serious months-long gap in their nutrition.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Each year, the federal Summer Food

Service Program (which New York City’s Department of Education administers under the name “NYC Summer Meals”) provides free breakfasts and lunches to all kids 18 and younger – without registration, documents or ID required.

Over 100 graduates stepped up at CUNY in the Heights (CITH) to receive their professional certifi cates late last month.

Touting the theme “Your career’s just begun,” those who had completed courses in

such specializations as Building Maintenance, Child Care-Teacher’s Assistant, Home Care Aide, High School Equivalency Program, Microsoft Offi ce Specialist and Microsoft Technology Associate, among others, were cheered on by administrators, family and friends at a ceremony and reception held on June 23rd at CITH’s satellite campus at 5030 Broadway.

Juliana Anderson was recognized as

the graduating class’ valedictorian, and in her remarks, she urged those assembled to continue in their pursuits.

“Keep reaching for your goals,” said Anderson. “Think of acquiring your diploma, of building a career. It may seem like a great deal of work at fi rst, but it’s worth it.”

“This is my second graduation ceremony, and it is, by far, the most special moments of the year,” said CITH Executive Director Seny Taveras, J.D. “The goal is always to have you receive these certifi cates. Having 126 students graduating from so many different courses is a tremendous achievement for us all.” Taveras noted that for many students, the certifi cates provide a stepping stone, and pointed to one such unique example.

“Here with us today is a graduate who is 60 years of age, divorced, who lost her home, but it did not deter her from saying, ‘Si, se puede’,” she said. “She persevered and is today looking for work while continuing her studies in the Bronx.”

Moreover, she added, younger residents are also welcome throughout the year. Beyond the courses offered throughout the academic year, CITH’s summer camp offers over 150 children literacy enrichment, fi eld trips and STEM courses.

“We have always been open for everyone, of all ages,” she said.

Joined by Rangel, who is retiring after 46 years in Congress, Wright and Espaillat met privately at Sylvia’s Restaurant before emerging to speak with the media.

Presenting a unifi ed front, the trio called for solidarity and reduced tensions between the district’s ethnic groups.

“We left it all on the battlefi eld, and certainly now it’s time to come together,” said Wright.

On Tuesday evening, with Espaillat leading by a slim margin of votes, Wright had refused to give up until all paper and absentee ballots had been counted.

The concession paved the way for Espaillat’s ascension to Congress after two unsuccessful bids against Rangel in 2012 and 2014.

If he wins the general election in November as expected in the overwhelmingly Democratic district, Espaillat would become the fi rst Dominican-American to serve in Congress, as well as the fi rst undocumented individual.

According to unoffi cial Board of Elections results, Espaillat won with 36.74 percent of votes, compared to 33.85 percent for Wright.

“I want him to be successful,” said Wright in congratulating Espaillat. “We all need him to be successful. We all serve the same constituency.”

The display marked an emphatic shift in tone for the primary race from just a few days earlier, when Rev. Al Sharpton had fanned accusations of black voter suppression, and Rangel stated that he could not envision someone outside of Harlem holding the

Rangel, who had backed Wright in the primary, was more conciliatory on Thursday, offering congratulations to Espaillat while noting how the ethnic makeup of the city’s neighborhoods has historically gone through changes.

“I do know one thing, that’s what America’s all about,” said Rangel. “That’s what change is all about.”

“This is a special moment to coalesce and bring together all of the good will that we have, to make sure that our neighborhoods are lifted,” stated Espaillat.

Pickering said that he will work tirelessly to reaffi rm the relevance of Mexicans in the city and to exalt their role as a fundamental pillar of the development of the United States.

During his fi rst meeting with the press on June 27th, the diplomat said that his efforts will concentrate on tending to urgent key matters for Mexico and the Mexican community.

Gómez-Pickering added that he will work hard to build strategic links with political and public authorities to promote and protect the interests of Mexicans, strengthen effi cient consular services and see that the rights of Mexican migrants are protected.

On the other hand, the diplomat stressed the need to tackle the anti-immigrant rhetoric spreading throughout the U.S. by empowering his compatriots, who he admitted are being hard-hit by the negative campaign being carried out against them.

“The valuable contribution that the Mexican community makes to this country has been extensively demonstrated,” he said. “Statistics don’t lie in this city. Anyone can see the fi gures showing the many compatriots who own companies on U.S. territory who pay taxes and create jobs, and the scores of Mexicans who contribute to the growth of this nation with their hard work every day.”

“I am greatly disappointed in any kind of racist position, regardless of which sector

generates it, but I am sure that – particularly with Mexico – it comes from lack of knowledge and disinformation about the invaluable relationship between Mexico and the U.S.,” he added.

In the consul’s opinion, the moment is right to counteract such unawareness by educating people in the U.S. about the nature of the bond linking the two countries and the signifi cance of the input of Mexicans in this country’s success.

committed to using union labor when its ice center plans were fi rst presented to the City Council.

“When we fi rst started negotiating, the very fi rst thing I asked them about were union jobs, and they said yes,” Cabrera said. “They made all the promises, but all we have are broken promises.”

At press time, KNIC had not responded to calls requesting comment.

Eddie Jorge, an organizer for New York State Iron Workers District Council, advocated for Bronx residents to be hired for the armory project.

“I would like to see our members around here get the work,” Jorge said. “We are the community.”

“It’s good for the local economy,” agreed Smith. “It means the money stays here.”

Some traveled from outside the area to join the rally, including Robert Fawcett, a Local 79 member who drove in from New Jersey.

Fawcett said that as New York City real estate has boomed in recent years, more developers are opting to go with non-union workers to cut costs.

“That’s a trend right now, but it’s not the answer,” said Fawcett. “Skilled labor isn’t cheap, but cheap labor isn’t skilled.”

Transformation of the Kingsbridge Armory into a 750,000-square-foot ice center has been delayed due to a legal battle over the armory’s lease, which KNIC signed in October 2014.

Earlier this year, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) put the lease in escrow, claiming KNIC had not raised enough funds to begin construction on the $350 million project.

The NYCEDC has refused to release the lease until KNIC demonstrates it has $158 million for the fi rst phase of the project.

On June 9, Bronx Supreme Court Judge Ruben Franco proposed that the city surrender the lease to KNIC, with the condition that the developer secures funding by February.

Cabrera said that even if the lease issue is resolved soon, the project should not move forward until KNIC agrees to use union laborers at the site.

He added that KNIC had previously agreed to fund a transportation study, which has not yet been done.

“My concern is they don’t have the funding to complete this project,” Cabrera said.

New Yorkers can report vacant and abandoned properties

in their communities through a hotline at the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS).

As part of state legislation to prevent

foreclosures and curb the threat posed to communities by “zombie properties” across the state, DFS will maintain an electronic registry of vacant and abandoned properties. New Yorkers are encouraged to call for information about unoccupied and ill-maintained properties in their neighborhoods. If a property is not already in the statewide registry, DFS will identify the mortgage servicer to facilitate appropriate remedial actions as outlined in the legislation.

“Abandoned homes drag down surrounding property values, and the longer they languish, the more severe the ripple effects are that affect entire communities,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo in a statement. “This hotline empowers New Yorkers to take back their neighborhoods and ensure that

The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood and platelets, urging all eligible donors to give now to replenish an extremely low summer supply.

Blood donations have fallen short of hospital needs for the past few months, resulting in about 39,000 fewer donations than what’s needed, as well as a signifi cant draw down of the overall Red Cross blood supply.

In addition, the Independence Day holiday may have caused many regular donors to postpone donations due to vacation plans. A recent Red Cross poll revealed that more than 75 percent of donors surveyed indicated vacation plans this summer, many of them occurring the weeks before and after July 4.

“Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which is why

a SleevesUp virtual blood drive at redcrossblood.org/sleevesup, giving of their time through volunteerism or making a fi nancial donation to support Red Cross humanitarian work across the country.

Every two seconds in the United States blood and platelets are needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant procedures, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease.

The Red Cross must collect approximately 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.

Going Vertical? Stay Safe

The city’s Department of Buildings (DOB) reminds New

Yorkers that if you’re stuck in an elevator, the safest place to be is inside the car.

Instead, the DOB urges residents to just ring, relax, and wait for help to arrive.

Elevators are among the very safest forms of transportation, but New Yorkers have been seriously injured trying to escape stalled elevators.

“New York’s elevators make billions of safe trips a year, so they’re one of the safest forms

of transportation – but you still need to use common sense,” said DOB Commissioner Rick Chandler. “Don’t overload elevators and if you get stuck, don’t panic. Ring the alarm, relax, and wait for help to arrive.”

Injuries sustained by New York City elevator passengers have decreased over

the last ten years, from 105 injuries in 2007 to 51 last year.

The DOB’s Elevator Unit seeks to ensure the operational safety, reliable service and lawful use of vertical transportation devices. The

unit ensures that each elevator in the city is inspected at least twice a year: once by DOB or a DOB-hired inspection fi rm, and once by the building owner. Every

• Don’t jump in elevators – jumping can make an elevator uneven with the fl oor. You can also get stuck.

The fund supports undergraduate and graduate students who express a strong interest in Puerto Rican Studies and their research in this field. district’s political power from Wright’s Harlem, which is predominantly African

American, to Espaillat’s home base of Washington Heights and Inwood, which are largely Hispanic.

Espaillat pointed out the he and Wright had worked together successfully in the past, and noted that in 1996, Wright’s father swore him into the State Assembly.

“There is a kinship here between the Assemblyman and I and this neighborhood and the neighborhood that I grew up in,” Espaillat said.

Espaillat stated that his victory was an important one during an equally divisive presidential campaign.

“I believe that the election of Adriano Espaillat to the U.S. Congress is the perfect answer that we need to give to Donald Trump,” he said. “That an immigrant from New York City gets to go to Congress that came here with no papers, overstayed his visa, is the best message and the best language you can give to Donald Trump.”

Elected offi cials who attended the announcement, which featured an embrace between Wright and Espaillat, commented on

its unusually harmonious nature.“This was really special.” said Levine. “I

don’t think I’ve seen a candidate concede before with his or her opponent standing next to them.”

“Seeing who all was out here today shows unity in our leadership, and I think there will be unity in our communities, and I think that’s a wonderful thing,” remarked Brewer.

After a tense and sometimes racially contentious race, Levine said the call for unity was a “healthy moment” for the district.

“There’s a healing process, and I think this was an incredibly important fi rst step,” Levine said.

With the primary race now wrapped up, Rivera suggested that the real work had just begun.

“The campaign was just a campaign,” he stated. “Now it is time for us all to govern.”

De acuerdo con resultados no ofi ciales de la Junta de Elecciones, Espaillat ganó con el 36.74 por ciento de los votos, frente a 33.85 por ciento de Wright.

“Quiero que tenga éxito”, dijo Wright al felicitar a Espaillat. “Todos necesitamos que tenga éxito. Todos servimos a la misma circunscripción”.

La demostración marcó un cambio en el tono contundente de la competencia primaria de tan sólo unos días antes, cuando el reverendo Al Sharpton avivó las acusaciones de supresión del voto negro y Rangel declaró que no podía imaginar que alguien de afuera de Harlem se hiciera cargo del asiento del distrito.

Dado que los límites del distrito se formaron en 1944, sólo dos hombres han ocupado el cargo: Adam Clayton Powell Jr., quien sirvió 12 términos, y Rangel, quien sirvió 23.
