PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ... Dear Congregants: You had to be there to feel the outpouring of love for Rabbi
Mark Shapiro as we celebrated his forthcoming retirement. And over nine hundred of you were there for the Shabbat service on April 7 and over seven hundred of you were there for the dinner on April 8.
The week-end festivities were fabulous. It was an honor to present a beautiful photograph of Rabbi Shapiro to the congregation. The photograph will be displayed in the Temple in a place of honor. As I mentioned Friday night, it is one of those photos in which the subjects' eyes follow you. Check it out. It was also a privilege to announce that in honor of Rabbi Shapiro's lifetime love of learning and teaching, the Scholar-in-Residence program will henceforth be named The Rabbi Mark Shapiro Scholar-in-Residence. Thank you to everyone who helped make the service and Oneg Shabbat so special.
Saturday night was the night to give Rabbi Shapiro personal gifts from the congregation. Three albums were presented to Rabbi Shapiro, which represented your personal message/memories to him. We had thought we would give Rabbi one album, but so many of you wanted to share your thoughts with him, we filled three albums! Next came a beautifu l mezuzah for Rabbi and Hanna Shapiro's new home, and last but certainly not least, Rabbi Shapiro was presented with a set of golf clubs.
Thank you to everyone who made the evening so perfect. And Rabbi Shapiro, thank you for everything!
I hope that you have saved May 21 for our annual JUF Brunch. The speaker scheduled to appear will be out 6f the country; however, we are privileged to have Dennis Prager (not related to our members Alex and Bella) as our guest speaker. No doubt you have heard him on the radio, seen him on television, or read one of his books. He co-authored the most widely used introduction to Judaism, "The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism"Toastmasters voted him one of America's five best speakers. So, come and have some lox and bagels, schmooze with other congregants, and hear a wonderful speaker.
I look forward to seeing you. L'Shalom, Shirlee Cohen

SISTERHOOD NEWS ... Blood circulation--it's vital to keep a body healthy and
functioning. Accordingly, Sisterhood board members take on new positions every two years, bringing their unique insight, experience, and enthusiasm to their new jobs and energizing the entire organization at the same time. While we have enjoyed a fruitful year under Sisterhood President Sandie Sklar, along with her dedicated executive board, new members are already readying themselves to take over the reins. Please join me in congratulating these dynamic and devoted women: Ruth Maller, Pres., Lynne Kleiman, Prog. V.P. , Jill Jacobs, Rel. & Ed. V.P., and Lori Jericho, Treas.
In addition to blood circulation, sometimes new blood is needed as well. If you've ever thought about getting more involved in Sisterhood, why not join the board this year? You won't find a more dynamic, energetic, welcoming, can-do group of women anywhere! If you're interested in getting the most out of the coming year, contact Sandie Sklar at 847/272-2794 for information about available board positions.
Before we turn our thoughts to the new year, however, plan to join us for one of the many activities coming up this year:
>MAY 3, 7:30 pm, BJBE: Arts educator Jill Friedberg presents Art of the Holocaust: The Enduring, an interactive, interdisciplinary program featuring works of art created by prominent artists who survived the Shoah. Our Final Open Meeting of the year, this program is of particular interest to Ms. Friedberg as her father was one of the liberators of Buchenwald. For more information, call Jill at 847/724-1035.
>May I 0, 7:30 pm, BJBE: The Sisterhood Book Club will round out the year by discussing Mrs. Dal/away by Virginia Woolf, in conjunction with The Hours by Michael Cunningham. For more details, call Sandee Babsin at 847/998-6086.
>MAY 11, BJBE: BJBE Sisterhood's Luncheon for the Elderly is hosted each year for seniors in nursing homes in our area. We need volunteers to set up, make food, serve, and socialize. If you can spare even a few hours, please call Gail Schuck at 847/296-9255.
>JUNE 13, 7:30 pm, BJBE: Feminist Forum presents Judaism: FreeWill or Fate? with Debra Nesselson, rabbinical student, teacher of Judaica, and instructor for the Dawn Schuman Institute. Explore your own spirituality as Ms. Nesselson talks about the bible and midrash, as well as whether God has control over our lives. For more information about the program, call Jan Lev at 847/272-2335.
>AUG. 11-12: BJBE's Sisterhood Kallah 2000 promises to be unforgettable! This year's facilitator, Rabbi Karyn Kedar, Director of the Great Lakes Region of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and author of the book God Whispers: Stories of the Soul, Lessons of the Heart, will lead us on an exploration of "Blessings Written and Revealed ... Opening Ourselves to Worship". Plan to join us at The Lodge at McDonald's Campus in Oak Brook for 24 hours of Sisterhood community. For more information, call Julie Webb at 847/222-9086.
In addition to attending one of the events described above, why not consider joining our board for the 2000-01 year? Not only will you be providing our worthwhile organization with new blood, but Sisterhood will revitalize you as well. We look forward to welcoming you onboard.
L'Shalom, Naomi Kogan-Dein

SOCIAL ACTION ... Feed the Homeless--9:00am May 28 at temple: All are
welcome. We make over 500 lunches. Families are encouraged to distribute these lunches downtown at several shelters after the lunch-making. Any questions? Contact Patti Frazin at 945-6620 .
The Tzedakah recipient for May is Shifra and Puah: This volunteer-based organization provides meals, clothing, toys, and other needed items to new mothers and their families .
Russian Conversation Club: The Club needs YOU! It cannot converse without BJBE volunteers. Meetings are weekly, Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00 at BJBE. The Club is designed to help Russians practice conversational English. ENGLISH SPEAKING VOLUNTEERS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED! A committment of once a month is welcome, though they will not turn any conversationalist away. Contact Barbara Blonz at 966-8533 .
Interfaith Community Action Network (ICAN): The ICAN group also coordinates resources and volunteer opportunities and needs in the Glenview community. If you are interested in attending the next meeting on May 10, 7:30 pm or becoming involved, call Renee Friedman at 729-5452.
United Power for Action and Justice (UPAJ): The March North/Northwest Assembly at Sts. Faith, Hope, & Charity in Winnetka was a great success with over 800 people in attendance to garner support for the Gilead campaign to help the uninsured and thank legislative supporters ofUPAJ for their help.
Silver Threads is a visitation group serving the needs of elderly residents of area nursing homes. United Power members of six Northwest suburban congregations developed a training program in conjunction with local nursing homes. Today, approximately 20 volunteers are visiting the elderly in four homes which previously were unvisited. TRAINING SESSION planned for May 4 and 11. Learn how to evaluate a home's care and how to make your visits most helpful. Call Renee Friedman at 729-5452 if you are interested.
UPAJ Leadership Training: Call Randy Levin at 541-3194.
LOCAL KIDS NEED MENTORS ... The February Sisterhood meeting on School violence brought to
our attention that many children who act out CAN be helped. Supportive adult role models are vital for children who lack that guidance in their daily lives. Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook is committed to promoting positive mental health among our young people. Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors, act as study buddies, and help with socialization skills in the Adventures Program.
For information on volunteering, call Nancy Bloom, Executive Director, at 724-2620.
ANIMALS IN NEED OF FOSTER CARE ... Often a barrier to leaving an abusive home is fear for one's
animal safety. Knowing that your pet can reside in a loving home can be one less barrier an abused person has to deal with . Being a "foster parent" is a big responsibility. It can take an average of 1-1/2 years and a maximum of2 for families to successfully relocate. If you are interested in housing a bird, cat, or dog, call WINGS (a
local shelter for survivors of domestic abuse) at 803-0977 and speak to Beth Gardham.

NEWS FROM ARZA/WORLD UNION, NORTH AMERICA ...
The Progressive movement received a tremendous endorsement from one of Israel 's most powerful journalists in a recent editorial. Hirsh Goodman, founding editor of the Jerusalem Report, said in a March 27 essay: "Progressive Judaism is the solution, a warm, egalitarian, compassionate and attractive version (of Judaism) that will rebuild a sense of community in this country."
A delegation from Temple Sinai in Toronto, Canada, delivered a Torah to the only Progressive Jewish community center in Moscow. The Torah was given in honor of Austin and Nani Beutel; they are, respectively, Chairman of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and Vice President of ARZA/WORLD UNION, North America. The community center had only one Torah until the arrival of this gift, which will be used to train lay leaders for congregations throughout the former Soviet Union and will be taken to Progressive communities around Moscow that do not have access to Torahs on a regular basis.
A community of learning and physically disabled people in Kishor, Israel, is taking part in Shabbat services and religious activities for the first time, thanks to a new program from the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism.
The World Union for Progressive Judaism will bestow its highest honors this year on Jerry Tanenbaum, of Hot Springs, Ark., Dr. Jane Evans of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Rabbi Richard J. Jacobs, of Scarsdale, N.Y. Sponsored by ARZA/WORLD UNION, North America, the WUP International Humanitarian A wards dinner takes place in New York City on Sunday, September I 0, 2000.

19. We had a wonderful turnout and everyone had the Purim spirit. The lines in the face painting room never stopped, and didn't you just love those crazy hats? The spin art was quite beautiful, and the Purim Bingo, Estimation game, Purim Speil, and song-fest led by Rhonda added to the festivities. Who were all those different faces in the Haman game that everyone was throwing wet sponges at? None other than some of our Sunday School students and parents. Thanks for being such good sports. Didn't we have great fun playing GaGa upstairs? Thank you, Justin Riskin, for organizing the game.
We'd like to congratulate Danny Chankin for winning the Estimation Contest. My utmost gratitude goes to the teachers, machonicks, students, and parents who all worked so hard to make the Purim Fair such a success. But a special thanks must go to Gideon and Cindy Schlessinger and their chavurah group who made all the games, came early; and stayed late to clean up. What would we have done without you???

As the year is coming to an end, the Junior Youth Group looks back at an amazing year of events. Starting with a thirty person kickoff, through an amazing retreat based on spirituality, unto our social action month, we have been more then impressed with the youth grouper's involvement this year. In March we had our annual shul-in where we attended Shabbat Hamoreh Services, and then continued with an entire night of movies, food, and fun. This month we have many events planned. We are planning to have five eighth graders attend the Chicago Federation of Temple Youth's final event in preparation of being active next year. On April 29th we will be having a dinner and Havdalah Ceremony. And on april 30th will will take part in Mitzvah Day in various ways including the car wash and the entertainment at the nursing home. Our final event of th year will be on May 21st. We will be having a picnic with the other youth groups to culminate the year.

Sunday~ May 21st~ PICNIC!!
Monday Night Dinners -
Please join us before Monday Night School 6:00 P.M.
The KYG had a great outing in March, we headed to Super Just Games in Northbrook. We dined on pizza and ice cream, and played video games, and we all had a wonderful time. In April we made our contribution to Mitzvah Day, helping on several different projects. Thanks to all that have participated in the KYG this year, making this the most successful year to date! Families of the JYG and KYG can join us in our last event of the year. Our family picnic will be held at Wood Oaks Park in Northbrook, on Sunday May 21st. We will have lunch, and play games. It will be a wonderful way to end the year. If you have any questions about KYG, please contact Brad Goldstein at 520-1865.

••
The Senior Youth Group always looks forward to our annual retreat at OSRUI. Usually, it is the best event of the year. We get a unique opportunity to bond with each other. We study, we play, and if there's a little time left, we get some sleep too,
Our 2000 SYG Retreat was on March 5, and we had sixteen teenagers attend, with three wonderful staff, and a terrific theme to discuss all weekend. Our amazing SYG board wrote all of their programs around the theme of Obscurities: Jewish Law and The Reform Movement. How, our group wondered, do we as Reform Jews interpret the multitude of Jewish Law and apply it to our lives. This made for some truly fascinating discussions. For instance, we were able to apply the law "Do not destroy fruit trees during war" to our lives as suburban Jewish teenagers!
Along with our study sessions, we sang, we ate, we played in the gymnasium, we enjoyed the outside on an unusually beautiful weekend day, and we got to know each other a little better.
On April 15 we were entertained with our annual trip down to Father and Son Pizza and Second City. Twenty-five teenagers boarded a bus down to Father and Son Pizza where conversation and food was abundant. Then on to Second City for laughs and more fun. We returned to BJBE and became engaged in discussions pertaining to the controversial skits concerning current issues performed by the Second City players.
