Condolences The Rabbi, Cantor and members of the congregation extend sincerest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Esther Kreiger on the passing of her beloved sister-in-law, Jeanette Braun; and to Ceil Cohen, Toby Rosen and Irwin Rosen on the passing of beloved son-in-law, brother-in-law and uncle, Walter Markovits.
MESSAGE FROM RABBI ERIC YOFFIE, UAHC PRESIDENT Unfortunately, disaster has struck one of our own: B'nai Israel Synagogue in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Fortunately, the congregation's 40 families were safely evacuated and all are accounted for. As of this writing, we know that the synagogue is flooded, but it will be several weeks before we know the extent of the damage. We do know that the sanctuary is on the first floor of the synagogue, and that the synagogue is in the downtown area, where some of the worst flooding occurred. Over the weekend, in the face of the flooding, Elana Stein, the student rabbi from HUC-JIR who serves the congregation, flew into Grand forks for her scheduled visit. She was evacuated from her hotel, yet managed to gather together Jews who had been evacuated to the Grand Forks Air Force Base and held Shabbat services. We will keep you informed about the extent of the damage to the synagogue. In the meantime, donations can be made to the UAHC Disaster Fund, 838 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10021-7064. This fund was established to assist communities in the wake of natural disasters, most recently after a hurricane hit St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Our thoughts are with the people of North Dakota, and we pray that they will be able to quickly rebuild their homes and their lives.
THANK YOU The following note was sent to the Temple from one of the recipients of a Purim package delivered by our Sunday School students:
Dear Rabbi Brickman, My husband and I want you to know now much we appreciated the delicious Purim Shalach Manos delivered to us by Aliyah Zlotkin and her father. You are to be commended for your concern for the handicapped elderly and for the example you set for the young people to aot on that concern.

ADULT EDUCATION ON MONDAY EVENINGS Rabbi Brickman's adult education class meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p_m_ in the Temple library_ The goal of the class is to understand how, when and why our Reform Movement interprets Jewish tradition_ Contrary to what our critics have recently suggested, the process by which we decide to adapt our faith to the needs of contemporary society is neither arbitrary nor contrary to Jewish tradition_ Even if you haven't joined us yet, please feel free to drop in on Monday evenings for our informative discussion_
WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTION REGISTRATION Remember that the deadline for registering for the upcoming election for the World Zionist Congress is June 1, 1997_ Absolutely no registration forms will be accepted after that date_ When completing the registration form, please read the instructions carefully_ If you have any questions or need assistance registering for the election, please call Rabbi Brickman at the Temple, 333-4229. If you have been reading the news lately and following the debate over religious pluralism in Israel, and you have wondered what you can do, registering for this election is the answer_ A strong showing by the Re form and Conservative Movements will demonstrate that we are concerned about religious pluralism in the State of Israel, and hopefully change the minds of the Knesset members who are threatening to limit our rights as Jews_
HOLOCAUST EXHIBIT AT PUBLIC LIBRARY Our member, Esther Burg, and Elaine Slotkin, an artist from Bayonne, have arranged an exhibit on the Holocaust at the Jersey City Public Library Main Branch on Jersey Avenue. The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May and features a visual exhibit by Mrs. Slotkin, as well as books on loan from the Temple Library and from the personal collections of Esther and the Rabbi.
