Officer's Column First of ail, I want to express my gratitude to the entire Temple Community for your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity during my recent hospital stay and recuperation. Your best wishes and encouraging words have helped a great deal during my recovery from unexpected coronary bypass surgery. I particularly want to thank Rabbi Miller, Rabbi Gold and Cantor Ott for their comforting visits during my hospital stay. All in all, the response from the clergy, staff and congregants proved to me, once again, that Anshe Emeth is a very special place.

I'm moving along on the road to recovery, making the kind of progress that's described as "slow, but sure." I'm well enough now that I can begin to take at least a small part in my duties as a Temple Officer and Trustee. This includes my co-chainnanship, along with Steve Satz, of the Architectural sub-committee of the Temple Renovation Committee.

As you know, we have engaged the architectural flI1Il of Michael Landau Associates of Princeton to design and oversee future expansion construction and the renovation of our existing buildings. We're now in the early phases of planning and the committee is particu-larly pleased with the way Mr. Landau and members of his firm have reached out to the Temple congregants. Many of you, as members of the various Temple committees, have already had the opportunity to speak with the architects, passing along your thoughts on specific aspects of what's needed and desired in our new facility. In our on-going meetings with the architects, we are fine-tuning all these ideas so that they can eventually be translated into design possibilities. Because there are .so many factors to be taken into consideration in any renovation and/or new construction, we rely on the expertise of the architects. They are the ones who can best determine whether some-thing on a "wish list" can become a reality. It's a continuing give-and-take process. We give the necessary information - what's needed, what's wanted. The architects take it and come up with design concepts.

Will all we ask for work? It's too soon to tell, but at each meeting ideas are being refined and we're getting closer to our goal: the design of a new physical plant that will reflect the aims outlined in the Anshe Emeth Vision: "to shape and foster an exciting tomorrow of excellence and growth for the 21 sl Century."

Best wishes to all for a Ziesen Pesach.

Harvey Hauptman

Keepers of Jewish Excellence series presents

Kate Wenner Sunday, April 21 , 10:30AM The Burden of Shame and the Freedom of Truth

Kate Wenner, author of Setting Fires, is an award winning 20/20 producer whose groundbreaking segments on subj ects such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Adult Attention Deficit Disorder led to nationru awareness and legislation.

When her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she did what seemed natural- she set up a video camera to ask her father questions about his life. These videotaped conversations continued over eight months until just weeks before he died. He found the courage to make a stunning confession. At fourteen he'd been party to a terrible arson when his mother set fire to her small lingerie shop to collect insurance money. As he saw the upstairs tenants running from the flames with their baby in their arms, he was overcome with shame that never left him. His emotional confession became an extraordinary lesson in the healing power of confronting truth.

Don 't miss our Keeper of Jewish Excellence on May 6, Stuart Schoffman.

TO: Everyone in the Temple Family

As you know we will soon be commemorating the terrible time in our People's history known as the Shoah. Although it has been nearly sixty years since the Holocaust, the memory of that period in our People's history remains an all too open wound. For that reason, we continue to commemorate that time in special and meaningful ways. It keeps alive the memory of those who perished, it reminds us of our need to be vigilant against totalitarianism and it reaffirms for us the meaning of life and living.

This year, Yom Hashoah will be observed in our community in the following ways. The Temple will have a special service for Shabbat and Yom Hashoah on Friday evening, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. In addition, the Jewish community will hold a memorial gathering at the Nicholas Music Center on the Douglass College campus in New Brunswick on Sunday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to attend both of these commemorative moments.

As in past years, we are distributing Zachor buttons to the members of our congregation. It is our hope that you will wear these buttons from Yom Hashoah until Yom Ha-Atsma-Ut, from Sunday, April 7 through Wednesday, April 17. Wear these buttons proudly and use them as an opportunity to tell people about their meaning.

If you should need more buttons you may pick them up at the Temple Office or in the Religious School Office. They will be available to all of the members of our congregation.

Enjoy the Passover season and then commemorate this period in our People's history. I wish you and your family and all of the members of our Temple a very sweet and beautiful Passover and a meaningful season of Remembrance.
